Association Between Maternal Prenatal Exposure to Household Air Pollution and Child Respiratory Health: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Maternal prenatal exposure to household air pollution (HAP) is a critical public health concern with potential long-term implications for child respiratory health. The objective of this study is to assess the level of association between prenatal household air pollution and child respiratory health, and to identify which HAP pollutants are associated with specific respiratory illnesses or symptoms and to what degree. Relevant studies were retrieved from PubMed databases up to April 27, 2010, and their reference lists were reviewed. Random effects models were applied to estimate summarized relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The analysis involved 11 studies comprising 387 767 mother-child pairs in total, assessing various respiratory health outcomes in children exposed to maternal prenatal HAP. Children with prenatal exposure to HAP pollutants exhibited a summary RR of 1.26 (95% CI=1.08-1.33) with moderate between-study heterogeneity (I²=49.22%) for developing respiratory illnesses. Specific associations were found between prenatal exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) (RR=1.11, 95% CI: 1.09-1.13), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) (RR=1.46, 95% CI: 1.09-1.60), and particulate matter (PM) (RR=1.26, 95% CI: 1.2186-1.3152) and child respiratory illnesses (all had I² close to 0%, indicating no heterogeneity). Positive associations with child respiratory illnesses were also found with ultrafine particles (UFP), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and ozone (O3). However, no significant association was observed for prenatal exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO2). In summary, maternal prenatal exposure to HAP may contribute to a higher risk of child respiratory health issues, emphasizing the need for interventions to reduce this exposure during pregnancy. Targeted public health strategies such as improved ventilation, cleaner cooking technologies, and awareness campaigns should be implemented to minimize adverse respiratory effects on children.

Modeling the Succinic Acid Bioprocess: A Review

Succinic acid has attracted much interest as a key platform chemical that can be obtained in high titers from biomass through sustainable fermentation processes, thus boosting the bioeconomy as a critical production strategy for the future. After several years of development of the production of succinic acid, many studies on lab or pilot scale production have been reported. The relevant experimental data reveal underlying physical and chemical dynamic phenomena. To take advantage of this vast, but disperse, kinetic information, a number of mathematical kinetic models of the unstructured non-segregated type have been proposed in the first place. These relatively simple models feature critical aspects of interest for the design, control, optimization and operation of this key bioprocess. This review includes a detailed description of the phenomena involved in the bioprocesses and how they reflect on the most important and recent models based on macroscopic and metabolic chemical kinetics, and in some cases even coupling mass transport.

Connecting the Dots in Emerging Mast Cell Research: Do Factors Affecting Mast Cell Activation Provide a Missing Link between Adverse COVID-19 Outcomes and the Social Determinants of Health?

Evidence continues to emerge that the social determinants of health play a role in adverse outcomes related to COVID-19, including increased morbidity and mortality, increased risk of long COVID, and vaccine adverse effects. Therefore, a more nuanced understanding of the biochemical and cellular pathways of illnesses commonly associated with adverse social determinants of health is urgently needed. We contend that a commitment to understanding adverse outcomes in historically marginalized communities will increase community-level confidence in public health measures. Here, we synthesize emerging literature on mast cell disease, and the role of mast cells in chronic illness, alongside emerging research on mechanisms of COVID illness and vaccines. We propose that a focus on aberrant and/or hyperactive mast cell behavior associated with chronic underlying health conditions can elucidate adverse COVID-related outcomes and contribute to the pandemic recovery. Standards of care for mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), as well as clinical reviews, experimental research, and case reports, suggest that effective and cost-efficient remedies are available, including antihistamines, vitamin C, and quercetin, among others. Primary care physicians, specialists, and public health workers should consider new and emerging evidence from the biomedical literature in tackling COVID-19. Specialists and researchers note that MCAS is likely grossly under-diagnosed; therefore, public health agencies and policy makers should urgently attend to community-based experiences of adverse COVID outcomes. It is essential that we extract and examine experiential evidence of marginalized communities from the broader political–ideological discourse.

Membrane-Supported Layered Coordination Polymer as an Advanced Sustainable Catalyst for Desulfurization

The application of a catalytic membrane in the oxidative desulfurization of a multicomponent model diesel formed by most refractory sulfur compounds present in fuel is reported here for the first time. The catalytic membrane was prepared by the impregnation of the active lamellar [Gd(H₄nmp)(H₂O)₂]Cl·2H₂O (UAV-59) coordination polymer (CP) into a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, acrylic glass) supporting membrane. The use of the catalytic membrane in the liquid–liquid system instead of a powder catalyst arises as an enormous advantage associated with the facility of catalyst handling while avoiding catalyst mass loss. The optimization of various parameters allowed to achieve a near complete desulfurization after 3 h under sustainable conditions, i.e., using an aqueous H₂O₂ as oxidant and an ionic liquid as extraction solvent ([BMIM]PF₆, 1:0.5 ratio diesel:[BMIM]PF₆). The performance of the catalytic membrane and of the powdered UAV-59 catalyst was comparable, with the advantage that the former could be recycled successfully for a higher number of desulfurization cycles without the need of washing and drying procedures between reaction cycles, turning the catalytic membrane process more cost-efficient and suitable for future industrial application.

NO2 levels after the COVID-19 lockdown in Ecuador: A trade-off between environment and human health

The negative effects on human health, along with the fatalities caused by the new coronavirus, have led governments worldwide to take strict measures. However, a reduction in air pollution has been found in many regions on a global scale. This study is focused on how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting on the air quality in Ecuador, one of the most alarming cases of COVID-19 contagion in Latin America, occupying the first place as regards deaths per capita. The spatio-temporal variations in NO2 concentrations in 12 highly populated cities were evaluated by comparing the NO2 tropospheric concentrations before (2019) and after (2020) the COVID-19 lockdown. The atmospheric data was collected from the TROPOMI on the Sentinel-5P satellite of the European Space Agency. A reduction in NO2 concentrations (-13%) was observed as a consequence of the COVID-19 lockdown in Ecuador. However, this reduction occurred to the greatest extent in the cases of Guayaquil (-23.4%) and Quito (-22.4%), the two most highly populated cities. Linking NO2 levels to confirmed cases/deaths of COVID-19, a strong correlation between air NO2 concentrations and the cases/mortality caused by coronavirus (r = 0.91; p<0.001) was observed. This work highlights the crucial role played by air quality as regards human health.
