Abstract
Purpose To investigate the relationship between public demand for pediatric ophthalmology services and the accessibility of such services on a statewide basis in the United States, focusing on strabismus care. Methods Using Google Trends data, search volumes for "strabismus" were analyzed from January 2014 to December 2023. Pediatric ophthalmologist availability was assessed via the American Academy of Ophthalmology directory, normalized for state population size to create a relative demand index. Additional metrics from the United States Census Bureau and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided socioeconomic and health data. Correlation coefficients were used to explore relationships between search volumes, specialist availability, vision screening, socioeconomics, and demographic factors. Results The data revealed variability in public interest in pediatric ophthalmology across states, with Alaska showing the highest relative search volume for strabismus. The data also indicated notable disparities in pediatric ophthalmologist density, with North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming having no pediatric ophthalmologists. A significant correlation was identified between pediatric ophthalmologist availability and vision screening (R = 0.486, p < 0.001). Negative correlations were observed between the relative demand index and urbanization (R = -0.388, p = 0.007), as well as the strabismus prevalence (R = -0.455, p = 0.001), indicating that urbanization and specialist distribution influence eyecare demand and access. Conclusion The findings highlight disparities in accessibility and demand for pediatric ophthalmology services across the US, influenced by urbanization and distribution of healthcare professionals. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions to improve access to care and bridge gaps in pediatric ophthalmology service provision.

Abstract
PURPOSE Anterior stromal puncture is an inexpensive and widely used technique at the slit lamp to treat recurrent corneal erosions (RCE), common sequelae of corneal abrasions, trauma, and epithelial basement membrane dystrophies (EBMDs). The purpose of this study was to determine safety of a novel anterior stromal micropuncture device (termed a "plexitome") for use in the optical axis of the cornea. METHODS We performed an IRB-approved clinical pilot study on 45 patients with diverse corneal pathologies to determine the safety of the plexitome device and examined corneal healing responses clinically for a minimum of 30 days after treatment. Follow on efficacy data was collected for treated patients with RCE. Micropuncture treatment was performed either through loose epithelial tissue or after debridement using a cotton tip at the slit lamp. After "imprinting," patients were treated with topical medications including antibiotics, hypertonic saline/ointment, bandage contact lenses, and/or patching according to the treating physician's routine care for the condition. RESULTS Micropuncture using the "plexitome" device did not create visible scars in the corneal stroma of the 45 patients treated and followed for at least 30 days. Photographic evidence of imprinting was seen at in 1 patient at 30 days. There were no significant adverse events associated with treatment. CONCLUSIONS Micropuncture of the cornea using the "plexitome" device does not create optically evident anterior stromal scarring after treatment. Micropuncture using the device may be an effective way of treating RCE and other corneal manifestations of EBMD in the optical axis, which is not currently possible using standard anterior stromal puncture methods.

Abstract
The cornea serves as an essential shield that protects the underlying eye from external conditions, yet it remains highly vulnerable to injuries that could lead to blindness and scarring if not promptly and effectively treated. Excessive inflammatory response constitute the primary cause of pathological corneal injury. This study aimed to develop effective approaches for enabling the functional repair of corneal injuries by combining nanoparticles loaded with anti-inflammatory agents and an injectable oxidized dextran/gelatin/borax hydrogel. The injectability and self-healing properties of developed hydrogels based on borate ester bonds and dynamic Schiff base bonds were excellent, improving the retention of administered drugs on the ocular surface. In vitro cellular assays and in vivo animal studies collectively substantiated the proficiency of probucol nanoparticle-loaded hydrogels to readily suppress proinflammatory marker expression and to induce the upregulation of anti-inflammatory mediators, thereby supporting rapid repair of rat corneal tissue following alkali burn-induced injury. As such, probucol nanoparticle-loaded hydrogels represent a prospective avenue to developing long-acting and efficacious therapies for ophthalmic diseases.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the association between area-level socioeconomic deprivation and orbital trauma among emergency ophthalmology consults. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study using 5-year Epic data for all hospital-based ophthalmology consults at the University of Maryland Medical System, and the Distressed Communities Index (DCI) data for area-level socioeconomic deprivation. We ran multivariable logistic regression models adjusting for age to compute odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between the DCI quintile 5 distressed score and orbital trauma. RESULTS A total of 3,811 cases of acute emergency consults were identified, of whom 750 (19.7%) had orbital trauma and 2,386 (62.6%) had other traumatic ocular emergencies. The odds of orbital trauma among people living in a distressed community were 0.59 (95% CI 0.46-0.76) times the odds for those living in a prosperous community. Among White subjects, the odds of orbital trauma for people living in a distressed community were 1.71 (95% CI 1.12-2.62) times the odds for those living in a prosperous community; among Black subjects, the OR was 0.47 (95% CI 0.30-0.75; p-interaction = 0.0001). Among women, the OR for orbital trauma among those living in a distressed community was 0.46 (95% CI 0.29-0.71); among men, the OR was 0.70 (95% CI 0.52-0.97; p-interaction = 0.03). CONCLUSION Overall, we found an inverse association between higher area-level socioeconomic deprivation and orbital trauma among both men and women. The association varied by race, such that there was an inverse association with higher deprivation among Black subjects in contrast to a positive association among White subjects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few ocular trauma studies have addressed mortality outcomes. We sought to determine characteristics of mortality-related ocular trauma admissions and compared them with non-fatal injuries. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted using de-identified data of patients admitted with major trauma from the National Trauma Data Bank (2008-2014). Patients with ocular injury were identified using ICD- 9CM codes. Demographics, intention and mechanism, types of ocular and head injuries, and injury severity were documented. Mortality was determined using post-admission disposition. Statistical analysis using student t-test, chi-square, and odds ratios (OR) calculations were performed with STATA-17 software. Significance was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS Of 316,485 patients admitted with ocular trauma, 12,233 (3.86%) were mortality related. Expired patients were older than survivors: mean (SD) of 50.1(25.5) vs. 41.5(22.8) years. White (OR = 1.32; P < 0.001), ≥ 65years old (OR = 2.25; P < 0.001), and male (OR = 1.05; P = 0.029) patients were most likely to expire than their counterparts. Common mechanisms of injury in survivors were falls (25.3%), motor vehicle traffic-occupant, MVTO (21.8%) and struck by/against (18.1%) and for fatal injuries, falls (29.7%), MVTO (21.9%) and firearms (11.5%). Traumatic brain injury (TBI) was documented in 88.2% of mortality-related admissions. Very severe injury severity scores (ISS > 24) (OR = 19.19; P < 0.001) and severe Glasgow Coma Score (GCS < 8) (OR = 19.22; P < 0.001) were most associated with mortality than survival. Firearms were most associated with very severe ISS (OR = 3.73; P < 0.001), severe GCS (OR = 4.68; P < 0.001) and mortality (OR = 5.21; P < 0.001) than other mechanisms. Patients with cut/pierce injuries had the greatest odds of survival (OR = 13.48; P < 0.001). Optic nerve/visual pathways injuries (3.1%) had the highest association with very severe ISS (OR = 2.51; P < 0.001), severe GCS (OR = 3.64; P < 0.001) and mortality (OR = 2.58; P < 0.001) than other ocular injuries. Black patients with very severe ISS (OR = 32.14; P < 0.001) and severe GCS (OR = 31.89; P < 0.001) were more likely to expire than other race/ethnicities with similar injury severity. CONCLUSIONS Mortality-related admissions were older, male, and mostly of White race than ocular trauma admissions of survivors. Firearms were the deadliest mechanism. TBI was commonly associated and patients with optic nerve/pathway injuries, very severe ISS and severe GCS had higher mortality rates. Characteristics and demographic variations identified in this study may be useful in developing focused measures aimed at preventing trauma-related deaths.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The visual outcome of open globe injury (OGI)-no light perception (NLP) eyes is unpredictable traditionally. This study aimed to develop a model to predict the visual outcomes of vitrectomy surgery in OGI-NLP eyes using a machine learning algorithm and to provide an interpretable system for the prediction results. METHODS Clinical data of 459 OGI-NLP eyes were retrospectively collected from 19 medical centres across China to establish a training data set for developing a model, called 'VisionGo', which can predict the visual outcome of the patients involved and compare with the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS). Another 72 cases were retrospectively collected and used for human-machine comparison, and an additional 27 cases were prospectively collected for real-world validation of the model. The SHapley Additive exPlanations method was applied to analyse feature contribution to the model. An online platform was built for real-world application. RESULTS The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of VisionGo was 0.75 and 0.90 in previtrectomy and intravitrectomy application scenarios, which was much higher than the OTS (AUC=0.49). VisionGo showed better performance than ophthalmologists in both previtrectomy and intravitrectomy application scenarios (AUC=0.73 vs 0.57 and 0.87 vs 0.64). In real-world validation, VisionGo achieved an AUC of 0.60 and 0.91 in previtrectomy and intravitrectomy application scenarios. Feature contribution analysis indicated that wound length-related indicators, vitreous status and retina-related indicators contributed highly to visual outcomes. CONCLUSIONS VisionGo has achieved an accurate and reliable prediction in visual outcome after vitrectomy for OGI-NLP eyes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to assess trends in consumer-product-related geriatric ocular injuries using National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) data. Understanding the specific consumer products and settings coded in the NEISS dictionary that contribute to geriatric (≥ 65 years) ocular injuries, along with changing patterns during events like the COVID-19 pandemic, provides crucial insights for tailoring therapy and preventative strategies. This ultimately may reduce the burden of eye injuries on both older adults and healthcare systems. METHODS This was a retrospective population-based cohort study. The NEISS database was used to study eye injuries in geriatric adults from 2010 to 2021. Patients were categorized by age groups (65-74, 75-84, 85-94, ≥ 95 years), and data on demographics, injury types, product categories, and COVID-19 impact were collected. Pearson's chi-squared test (with p < 0.001 taken to indicate significance) was used to assess differences in expected ratios between age groups. RESULTS A total of 168,685 eye injury cases in adults aged 65 years and older were analyzed. Household items, tools, and gardening products accounted for over 75% of injuries. Most injuries occurred at home (65.3%). Contusions/abrasions (40.3%) and a foreign body (19.3%) were common diagnoses. Females had more household-item-related injuries, while males had more foreign body injuries. Regarding therapeutic disposition, 93.7% of all injuries were treated/examined and released, which showed a decreasing trend as age increased, while hospital admission/transfer rates increased with age. Compared to before COVID-19, the percentage of injuries during COVID-19 due to tools decreased (from 22.5% to 18.3%), while injuries due to gardening/lawn/landscaping/patio products increased (from 13.8% to 15.3%). CONCLUSIONS Our study characterizes geriatric ocular injuries and COVID-19 impact, highlighting common products and locations. Different age groups showed different injury patterns. Understanding these trends can aid injury prevention strategies for consumers and healthcare providers. Demographics and injury frequencies differed based on age and sex. Future research should further explore post-COVID-19 trends.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Eye injuries can happen to people of any age and for many reasons; among these is a fall. The aims of this study were to: (1) examine trends among fall-related eye injuries in working-age and older adults admitted to the emergency department (ED) from 2012 to 2021; and (2) investigate and compare the risk factors associated with fall-related eye injuries between working-age adults and older adults. DESIGN We examined a retrospective cohort in the 2012-2021 National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) databases. We used the Cochran-Armitage test for trend to determine the fall-related eye injury trend from 2012 to 2021. The associations among fall-related eye injuries, demographics, accident-related environments, and disposition, were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Among the total of 1,290,205 adults with eye injuries from 2012 to 2021, the incidence rate of fall-related eye injuries was higher in older adults (ranged from 9.0% to 17.4%) than in working-age adults (ranged from 3.7% to 7.1%). Over consecutive years, the number and annual incident rate of both working-age and older adults experiencing fall-related eye injuries increased significantly (all p ≤0.001). Patients who were female (odds ratio [OR] = 1.60, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.39-1.83), Black/African American (OR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.47-2.10) had significantly higher odds of fall-related eye injuries. The highest odds ratios found among all of the reported product categories for the fall-related eye injuries were an accident with home structures such as doors (OR = 12.65, 95% CI = 10.00-16.01) and an accident with home furnishings (OR = 11.65, 95% CI = 9.18-14.78) compared to an accident with workshop equipment. Patients who experienced fall-related eye injuries were more likely to be hospitalized/ have an inpatient stay (OR = 7.41, 95% CI = 5.78-9.52) after the ED treatment than those who treated and released after ED visit. CONCLUSION Among Americans treated in the ED for injury, fall-related eye injuries are increasingly common, especially among older adults, and associated with a need for inpatient care. Therefore, these findings suggest opportunities to investigate fall prevention and eye protection interventions, especially in the home setting.

Abstract
Development of topical bioactive formulations capable of overcoming the low bioavailability of conventional eye drops is critically important for efficient management of ocular chemical burns. Herein, a nanomedicine strategy is presented to harness the surface roughness-controlled ceria nanocages (SRCNs) and poly(l-histidine) surface coatings for triggering multiple bioactive roles of intrinsically therapeutic nanocarriers and promoting transport across corneal epithelial barriers as well as achieving on-demand release of dual drugs [acetylcholine chloride (ACh) and SB431542] at the lesion site. Specifically, the high surface roughness helps improve cellular uptake and therapeutic activity of SRCNs while exerting a negligible impact on good ocular biocompatibility of the nanomaterials. Moreover, the high poly(l-histidine) coating amount can endow the SRCNs with an ≈24-fold enhancement in corneal penetration and an effective smart release of ACh and SB431542 in response to endogenous pH changes caused by tissue injury/inflammation. In a rat model of alkali burn, topical single-dose nanoformulation can efficaciously reduce corneal wound areas (19-fold improvement as compared to a marketed eye drops), attenuate ≈93% abnormal blood vessels, and restore corneal transparency to almost normal at 4 days post-administration, suggesting great promise for designing multifunctional metallic nanotherapeutics for ocular pharmacology and tissue regenerative medicine.

Abstract
Optic nerve damage is a common cause of blindness. Optic nerve injury is often accompanied by fundus vascular disease, retinal ganglion cell apoptosis, and changes in retinal thickness. These changes can cause alterations in protein expression within neurons in the retina. Proteomics analysis offers conclusive evidence to decode a biological system. Furthermore, animal models of optic nerve injury made it possible to gain insight into pathological mechanisms, therapeutic targets, and effective treatment of such injuries. Proteomics takes the proteome as the research object and studies protein changes in cells and tissues. At present, a variety of proteomic analysis methods have been widely used in the research of optic nerve injury diseases. This review summarizes the application of proteomic research in optic nerve injury diseases and animal models of optic nerve injury. Additionally, differentially expressed proteins are summarized and analyzed. Various optic nerve injuries, including those associated with different etiologies, are discussed along with their potential therapeutic targets and future directions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare visual outcomes after open-globe injury (OGI) with those predicted by the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS), and to investigate the effect of treatment with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SUBJECTS Patients presenting with OGI to an academic United States ophthalmology department from 2017 to 2020. METHODS Best-corrected visual acuity (VA) measurements at the most recent follow-up were compared with final VA predicted by the OTS, based on preoperative injury characteristics. The most recently measured VA of patients treated with PPV during initial OGI repair (primary PPV group) was compared with patients treated with PPV after initial OGI repair (secondary PPV group) and patients never treated with PPV (No PPV group). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Best-corrected VA in the injured eye at last follow-up; secondary outcome measures included the occurrence of vitreous hemorrhage at any time, occurrence of retinal detachment at any time, rates of additional surgery, and rates of enucleation. RESULTS One-hundred and thirty-three subjects with OGI were identified and analyzed. The overall rate of PPV was 32%. Predictors of worse VA at last follow-up included older age (P = 0.047) and worse presenting VA (P < 0.001). Visual acuity outcomes for eyes in OTS categories 2 to 5 did not significantly differ from OTS predictions. However, eyes in OTS category 1 had a higher likelihood of last follow-up VA of light perception (LP) to hand motion (46% in the study cohort vs. 15% predicted by the OTS, P = 0.004) and a lower likelihood of no LP (33% vs. 74%, P < 0.001). The secondary PPV group had the worst VA at presentation among the 3 groups (P = 0.016), but VA at last follow-up did not significantly differ between the study groups (P = 0.338). CONCLUSIONS The most severe OGIs (i.e., OTS category 1) had better visual outcomes than predicted by the published OTS expectations, and secondary PPV was associated with significant visual improvement despite poor prognostic predictions. Evaluation by a vitreoretinal surgeon should be considered for all patients with severe OGI, especially those in OTS category 1. Abstract
Purpose To determine characteristics and factors associated with no vision survival (included no light perception, enucleation, and evisceration) following open globe injury (OGI) and to correlate the proportion of final vision to predictive values of ocular trauma score (OTS). Patients and Methods The medical records of consecutive patients diagnosed as OGI between January 2015 and December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Data collected included demographics, mechanisms and modes of injuries, ophthalmic presentations, managements, and visual outcomes at the final visit. Results Three hundred and seventy-one patients with a mean (standard deviation, SD) age of 44.0 (17.4) years were included. Male with workplace injury was the most frequent scenario. High-velocity metallic objects were the predominant causative materials. Following treatments, fifty-six eyes (14.9%) obtained no vision survival. Factors associated with no vision survival following OGI were low presenting vision, globe perforation, larger wound, presence of relative afferent pupillary defect, retinal detachment, and vitreous hemorrhage. Compared to OTS predictive values, eyes in OTS categories 1 and 2 had a lower proportion of no vision survival. Conclusion This study identified the importance of workplace injuries. Overall, there were comparable final visions between OTS and this study. However, a reduced proportion of no vision survival among severely injured eyes signifies the challenges of OGI management.

Abstract
This is a case of a 31-year-old female who presented to the emergency department at a London teaching hospital with a 24-h history of visual loss following an assault. The ophthalmological routine examination showed a submacular hemorrhage (SMH), and a computerized tomography scan demonstrated a displaced orbital floor fracture with inferior rectus entrapment and a medial wall fracture. To induce displacement of the SMH, intravitreal injection of 0.25 μg tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) was combined with 0.3 mL of intravitreal 100% perfluoropropane (C3F8) gas. At the 1-day follow-up, there was an inferotemporal displacement of the blood clot, and visual acuity improved from hand motions to 6/5 within 3 months. No complications occurred over 2 years of follow-up, with a final visual acuity of 6/5. This case shows us that intravitreal tPA and gas appear safe and effective as a treatment for traumatic SMHs. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that prompt treatment leads to favorable anatomical and functional outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose To provide insight into the current scope of workplace-related eye injuries (WREIs) by describing the demographic profiles and causes of WREIs from the years 2011 through 2020. Methods The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) dataset on WREIs injuries was used. Descriptive data generated included the frequency of eye injuries, the setting, and demographic data. Results The BLS reported an estimated 237 590 WREIs in the study timeframe. In that time, the incidence fell from 2.4 to 1.7 per 10 000 workers. These injuries commonly occurred in men (77.1%), White individuals (36.3%), those aged 25 to 34 years (26.9%), and those in the service (23.0%) and production (18.5%) industries. On average, WREIs resulted in a median of 2 missed workdays, with only 5.0% missing more than 1 month of work. Between 2019 and 2020, there was a 15.6% reduction in total WREIs in the US but a 39.3% increase in WREIs among healthcare workers. Conclusions Men, White individuals, and younger workers might be at increased risk for WREIs. Public health interventions targeted toward improving access to and the quality of protective equipment in these groups and in fields involved in the primary or secondary sectors of industry and healthcare might be the most cost-effective measure to reduce the impact of WREIs on the US workforce.

Abstract
Aim To determine the prevalence of ocular trauma in Iranian children aged 6–12 years. Methods This population-based cross-sectional study, comprised the first phase of the Shahroud Schoolchildren Eye Cohort Study on primary school children using cluster sampling in urban areas and census in rural areas. The students underwent the measurement of uncorrected and corrected visual acuity as well as non-cycloplegic, cycloplegic, and subjective refraction. The history of trauma, hospitalization, and surgery due to trauma was collected from parents using a questionnaire. Results The data of the trauma history was recorded for 5267 out of 5620 students. The mean age of the students was 9.7 ± 1.7 years (range: 6–12 years), 53.7% of them were boys, and 79.3% were from urban areas. A positive history of ocular trauma was found in 285 participants, and the lifetime prevalence of ocular injury (95% CI) was 5.2% (4.6–5.9). Blunt trauma was the most common ocular injury with a prevalence of 66.2%. There was a significant positive assocation between ocular trauma and living in rural areas (OR: 1.49, p: 0.012), older age (OR: 1.17, p < 0.001), and male sex (OR: 1.62, p: 0.002). Furthermore, 9.3% and 4.7% of the traumas required hospitalization and surgical intervention, respectively. Conclusion This study found a marked prevalence of ocular trauma compared to previous studies. Male sex, older age, and living in rural areas were associated with ocular trauma, which could be due to differences in lifestyle preference, outdoor exposure, and dangerous situations. Educational programs and safety instructions should be encouraged.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glaucoma is a worldwide problem that causes vision loss and even blindness, with a prevalence rate ranging from 1.9% to 15%. In Ethiopia, glaucoma is the fifth cause of blindness. This study aimed to explore the dependence between blindness of the right and the left eyes of glaucoma patients and assess the effects of the covariates under the dependence structure. STUDY DESIGN A retrospective cohort study. METHODS The study population included the glaucoma patients at Alert hospital from January 1, 2018, to December 30, 2021. The copula model was used to estimate the time to the blindness of the right and the left eyes of the glaucoma patients by specifying the dependence between the event times. RESULTS Out of 537 glaucoma patients, 224 (41.71%) became blind at least in one eye during the follow-up period. The results of the Clayton copula model revealed that factors, such as age, residence, diabetes mellitus, stage of glaucoma, and hypertension are considered the most prognostic factors for blindness in glaucoma patients. The findings also revealed that there was a strong dependence between the time to the blindness of the right and the left eyes in the glaucoma patients (τ = 0.43). CONCLUSION Based on the obtained results, high age, urban residence, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and higher stage of glaucoma were factors associated with time to the blindness in the glaucoma patients. There was also a dependence between the right and the left eyes of the glaucoma patients. The results revealed that the Clayton Archimedean copula model was the best statistical model for accurate description of glaucoma patients' datasets.

Abstract
Introduction: Although traumatic eye injuries can have a far-reaching impact on an individual and society, traumatic eye injury has not been a focus of research. The purpose of this study is to examine individuals’ experiences after traumatic vision loss and identify their needs. Methods: We used a qualitative approach to conduct semi-structured interviews with individuals who experienced traumatic vision loss and were treated at a specialty eye hospital in an urban setting. Participants also completed a demographic survey and the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire–25 (VFQ-25). Content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data and descriptive statistics were used to summarize quantitative data. Results: Interviews with 26 participants resulted in three categories of patient needs: informational, functional, and psychosocial. Participants wanted more information from providers about what to expect over time and identified driving as a significant challenge that affected their daily lives. Participants offered suggestions for addressing their functional needs including assistance with transportation to appointments, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Participants also discussed how vision loss affected their livelihood and finances, with a subset of participants experiencing significant mental health distress. Some participants suggested that a recovery coach, peer support, support groups, and mental health services would be beneficial for addressing their psychosocial needs. Discussion: Our findings point to a significant gap in services available to meet the needs of individuals with traumatic eye injuries. Future research is needed to test the effect of an integrated-care model that includes routine offering of psychosocial and functional services for patients with acute vision loss to determine the effect on outcomes. Implications for Practitioners: This work has far-reaching implications for providers, since it supports the need for the development and delivery of integrated interventions that emphasize addressing psychosocial and functional aspects of recovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate characteristics, training, and self-reported skills and abilities in vision and ocular care among PAs not specializing in ophthalmology. METHODS A survey on PA practice was administered to 5,763 randomly selected US-based PAs, and 537 respondents who completed the survey were invited to complete a separate vision and ocular care survey. Of those respondents, 382 completed the vision and ocular care survey. RESULTS Among respondents, 23% of PAs were involved in eyecare by providing patient information, answering questions, and initiating discussions about vision care and ocular health more than once per month. More than 77% received vision and ocular care training in and/or outside PA training. PAs involved in eyecare had significantly greater odds of reporting higher desired and current skill and ability levels compared with PAs not involved in eyecare, in six of eight vision and ocular care domains. CONCLUSIONS PAs who do not practice in ophthalmology provide vision and ocular care but have varying amounts of training and desire higher skill and ability levels. Ophthalmologists and PA institutions may develop vision and ocular care training for PA schools and continuing medical education.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify common causes of emergency department-treated eye injury among older adults in the United States and to characterize fall-related ocular trauma in this population. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. METHODS Data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, a nationally representative database of US emergency department-treated injuries, was used to assemble a cohort of adults ≥65 years of age with eye injuries between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2019. Demographic information, diagnosis, disposition, injury location, and the consumer product associated with injury were collected. Narrative descriptions of all injuries were reviewed to identify eye injuries caused by falls. RESULTS Four thousand nine hundred fifty-three eye injuries among older adults were reported from 2000-2019, a stratified probability sample representing approximately 238,162 injuries, with an average annual frequency of 12,000 injuries. Falls accounted for 11.5% of these injuries. Fall-related eye injuries commonly presented from home (66.5%) and were more likely to occur in the winter than eye injuries from other causes (28.1% vs 18.4%, P < .01). Risk factors for fall-related eye injury included older age (odds ratio [OR] 1.11 [95% confidence interval {CI} 1.10-1.13 per year), female sex (OR 2.3 [95% CI 1.6-3.1] vs male), black race (OR 2.4 [95% CI 1.3-4.5] vs white), and presentation from a nursing home (OR 12.7 [95% CI 4.9-32.8] vs other locations). Older adults with fall-related injuries were more likely to be hospitalized (OR 22.8 [95% CI 15.3-33.9]) and to have a ruptured globe (OR 14.1 [95% CI 6.5-30.6]) than those with fall-unrelated injury. CONCLUSIONS Falls are an important mechanism of ocular trauma in older adults and are associated with worse outcomes compared with eye injuries from other causes.
