Predictors of reporting bareback sex among a diverse sample of MSM recruited through a Swedish website

Interest in Taking HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Is Associated with Behavioral Risk Indicators and Self-Perceived HIV Risk Among Men Who Have Sex with Men Attending HIV Testing Venues in Sweden

This study explored factors associated with interest in taking PrEP among men who have sex with men (MSM) attending HIV testing venues in Sweden. Data from 658 HIV-negative respondents, surveyed by a questionnaire at six sites, were analyzed descriptively and by univariable and multivariable logistic regression. A total of 453 (68.8%) of the respondents expressed interest in taking PrEP. Reporting self-perceived risk of HIV acquisition as moderate or high, reporting ≥ 5 partners for condomless anal intercourse during the past year, and reporting hard drug use during the past year were independently associated with interest in taking PrEP. However, an aggregated variable of self-reported rectal gonorrhea, rectal chlamydia, or syphilis infection during the past year was not associated with interest in taking PrEP. Overall, Swedish MSM were well-informed regarding PrEP, and interest in taking PrEP was positively associated with sexual risk indicators.

Scenes as Micro-Cultures: Examining Heterogeneity of HIV Risk Behavior Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in Toronto, Canada

Using latent class analysis (LCA), we examined patterns of participation in multiple scenes, how sexual risk practices vary by scene, and psychosocial factors associated with these patterns among 470 gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) recruited from Toronto. We calculated posterior probability of being in a class from participation in nine separate scenes. We used Entropy, the Bayesian information criterion and the Lo-Mendel-Rubin likelihood ratio test to identify the best fit model. Fit indices suggested a four-class solution. Half (50%) of the GBM reported no or minimal participation in any scene, 28% reported participating in the dance club scene, 16% reported participating in the BDSM, bear, and leather scenes, and 6% reported participating in circuit, party and play, and sex party scenes. Compared to GBM who did not participate in scenes, GBM participating in the BDSM-Bear-Leather scene were more likely to be older, white, to report higher sexual self-esteem, and to engage in condomless anal sex; Party and Play scene members were more likely to be of Asian origin, and to use drugs before and during sex, whereas Dance Club scene members were more likely to be younger and to report lower self-esteem but higher hope. LCA allowed us to identify distinct social niches or micro-cultures and factors characterizing these micro-cultures. GBM differ in their risk for HIV and STIs according to characteristics associated with participation in distinct micro-cultures associated with scenes. Tailored interventions may be needed that focus on reducing HIV risk and promoting sexual health in specific contexts such as the BDSM-Bear-Leather and Party and Play.

The Relationship of Internalized Homonegativity to Sexual Health and Well-Being Among Men in 38 European Countries Who Have Sex With Men

The objective of this article is to examine internalized homonegativity (IH) in relation to aspects of well-being and several measures of clinical importance among men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) in 38 countries. The data were collected as part of the EMIS project. The multivariable regression analysis identified independent associations with IH for nongay identity, younger age, being closeted, limited gay social affiliation, and sexual unhappiness. IH was also positively associated with loneliness, inability to decline unwanted sex, and being less knowledgeable about HIV and HIV testing. These results provide evidence that homonegative internalization merits consideration as a predisposing factor in several aspects of ill health. There are also several clinical implications of this project, including: (1) Treatment of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) persons should address gay self-acceptance, as internalized homonegativity seems to be a predisposing factor in several aspects of ill health among this population, and (2) therapy that is used to help LGB persons accept and integrate a gay or lesbian identity seems particularly important for younger, nongay identified persons.

Experiences of and attitudes towards HIV/STI prevention among holidaymaking men who have sex with men living in Sweden: a cross-sectional Internet survey

AIM

Foreign travellers and men who have sex with men (MSM) are prioritised groups for human immunodeficiency virus/sexually transmitted infection (HIV/STI) prevention efforts in Sweden because of high prevalence of sexual risk-taking. This study aims to describe experiences of and attitudes towards HIV/STI prevention efforts, prior to travelling abroad, among MSM, and to investigate the kinds of prevention efforts that are desirable.

METHODS

The study is based on survey responses from 656 MSM who had travelled abroad. Recruitment took place through a Nordic website, and had a cross-sectional design. The analysis has mainly been descriptive, but bivariate analyses were performed using the chi-square test. The level of significance was p <.05.

RESULTS

Only a few of the participants had encountered HIV/STI prevention efforts in Sweden (5%) and abroad (23%), and a majority (58%) felt that it should be more prevalent. Having free access to condoms and lubricants was preferred among 68% of the men. Furthermore, having written information, as opposed to oral, was also preferred (68% vs. 26%). MSM felt that it was easy to find out information (79%) and claimed they would use the Internet to do so (87%).

CONCLUSIONS

Service providers who offer their services to travellers are encouraged to provide helpful links to information about sexual health. Information that is geared towards risk groups such as young adults should be presented with awareness that MSM are also part of that group. It is important for information to be conveyed respectfully to everyone, but perhaps MSM in particular, since they may have experienced feelings of being stigmatised or discriminated against previously.
