Cuttlefish-Bone-Derived Biomaterials in Regenerative Medicine, Dentistry, and Tissue Engineering: A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

Marine ecosystems, covering 70% of Earth's surface, hold immense biodiversity and potential for biomaterials. Cuttlefish bone (CB) and marine resources have gained attention as eco-friendly biomaterials.

OBJECTIVES

We aim to comprehensively study biomedical applications of CB-derived materials. By evaluating both in vivo and in vitro investigations, the review seeks to uncover the diverse potential of CB in the biomedical field.

METHODS

A comprehensive search of electronic databases yielded 51 articles from 2408 studies. These studies encompassed in vivo animal studies and in vitro investigations.

RESULTS

In vivo studies employed for bone repair, dorsal subcutaneous defects, thermal wound healing, muscle injections, and avian blood testing. In vitro studies focused on HAp synthesis, scaffold development, dental material enhancement, and antimicrobial properties. Risk of bias assessments revealed varying degrees of methodological quality in both animal and in vitro studies, underscoring the need for standardised reporting and rigorous study design in future research.

CONCLUSIONS

This review fills a gap in the literature by providing a comprehensive overview of the applications of CB-derived materials in the biomedical field. Additionally, it offers valuable insights for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers interested in sustainable and effective biomaterials for diverse medical purposes, advancing the fields of regenerative medicine and dentistry.

Cuttlefish bone powder as an efficient solid-phase extraction sorbent of anti-SARS-CoV-2 drugs in environmental water

Many antiviral drugs were developed to counteract coronavirus disease, 2019 (COVID-19) with severe acute respiratory syndrome. Therefore, the scientific community's efforts have focused on the detection and quantification of antiviral compounds currently being tested for COVID-19 treatment. Cuttlefish bone powder (CFBP) has been used for the first time as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent for the extraction of SARS CoV-2 antiviral drugs (chloroquine, ritonavir and indomethacin) from water samples. An effective and sensitive method was developed by combining SPE and liquid chromatography- UV detection (LC-UV). An experimental design was applied for the optimization of extraction process. Experimental variables were optimized using Doehlert matrix. The developed method included 50 mg of CFBP sorbent, 20 mL of water sample at pH = 9 and 5 mL of ACN/KH₂PO₄ buffer solution (80:20, v/v) in the elution step. For validation of the method, selectivity, linearity precision, and sensitivity were evaluated. Extraction recovery percentage of all Sars cov-2 antivirals were above 98.2%. The detection and quantification limits were between 0.1 and 0.5 µg L⁻¹ and 0.6 and 2 µg L⁻¹, respectively. The current study suggested that CFBP has the application potential for the enhanced SPE of SARS CoV-2 antiviral drugs from water samples.

Chemically Modified Biosorbents and Their Role in the Removal of Emerging Pharmaceutical Waste in the Water System

Presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PACs) as emerging contaminants in water is a major concern. Recent reports have confirmed the presence of PACs in natural and wastewater systems, which have caused several problems indicating the urgent need for their removal. The current review evaluates the role of chemically modified biosorbents in the removal of PACs in water. Reported biosorbents include plant and animal solid waste, microorganisms and bio-composite. Bio-composites exhibited better prospects when compared with other biosorbents. Types of chemical treatment reported include acid, alkaline, solvent extraction, metal salt impregnation and surface grafting, with alkaline treatment exhibiting better results when compared with other treatments. The biosorption processes mostly obeyed the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model in a process described mainly by ionic interaction. Desorption and regeneration capacity are very important in selecting an appropriate biosorbent for the biosorption process. Depending on the type of biosorbent, the cost of water treatment per million liters of water was estimated as US $10–US $200, which presents biosorption as a cheap process compared to other known water treatment processes. However, there is a need to conduct large-scale studies on the biosorption process for removing PACs in water.
