Effects of DO on N2O emission during biological nitrogen removal using aerobic granular sludge via shortcut simultaneous nitrification and denitrification

The effects of polypropylene microplastics on the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from water by Acorus calamus, Iris tectorum and functional microorganisms

Polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs), an emerging pollutant, adversely affect the ability of aquatic plants to restore water bodies, thereby compromising the functionality and integrity of wetland ecosystems. This study examines the effects of microplastic stress on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal capacities of Acorus calamus and Iris tectorum, as well as on functional microorganisms within the aquatic system. The findings indicate that under PP-MP stress, the nitrogen and phosphorus absorption capabilities of both plants were diminished. Additionally, there was a significant reduction in the metabolic enzyme activities related to nitrogen and phosphorus in the plants, alongside a notable decrease in leaf nitrogen content. PP-MPs hinder the nutrient uptake of plants, affecting their growth and indirectly reducing their ability to utilize nitrogen and phosphorus. Specifically, in the 10 mg L-1 treatment group, A. calamus and I. tectorum showed reductions in leaf nitrogen content by 23.1% and 31.0%, respectively, and by 14.8% and 27.7% in the 200 mg L-1 treatment group. Furthermore, I. tectorum had higher leaf nitrogen levels than A. calamus. Using fluorescent tagging, the distribution of PP-MPs was traced in the roots, stems, and leaves of the plants, revealing significant growth impairment in both species. This included a considerable decline in photosynthetic pigment synthesis, enhanced oxidative stress responses, and increased lipid peroxidation in cell membranes. PP-MP exposure also significantly reduced the abundance of functional microorganisms involved in denitrification and phosphorus removal at the genus level in aquatic systems. Ecological function predictions revealed a notable decrease in nitrogen cycling functions such as nitrogen respiration and nitrite denitrification among water microorganisms in both treatment groups, with a higher ecological risk potential in the A. calamus treatment group. This study provides new insights into the potential stress mechanisms of PP-MPs on aquatic plants involved in water body remediation and their impacts on wetland ecosystems.

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from closed activated sludge- to aerobic granular sludge-based biosystems via gas circulation

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from biological treatment units are challenging wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) due to their wide applications and global warming. This study aimed to reduce GHG emissions (especially N2O) using a gas circulation strategy in a closed sequencing-batch reactor when the biological unit varies from activated sludge (AS) to aerobic granular sludge (AGS). Results show that gas circulation lowers pH to 6.3 ± 0.2, facilitating regular granules but elevating total N2O production. From AS to AGS, N2O emission factor increased (0.07-0.86 %) due to decreasing ammonia-oxidizing rates while the emissions of CO2 (0.3 ± 0.1 kg-CO2/kg-chemical oxygen demand) and CH4 remained in the closed biosystem. The gas circulation decreased N2O emission factor by 63 ± 15 % after granulation higher than 44 ± 34 % before granulation, which is implemented by heterotrophic denitrification. This study provides a feasible strategy to enhance heterotrophic N2O elimination in the biological WWTPs.

Smaller Aerobic Granules Significantly Reduce N2O Production by Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria: Evidences from Biochemical and Isotopic Analyses

The mitigation of nitrous oxide (N2O) is of primary significance to offset carbon footprints in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) systems. However, a significant knowledge gap still exists regarding the N2O production mechanism and its pathway contribution. To address this issue, the impact of varying granule sizes, dissolved oxygen (DO), and nitrite (NO2-) levels on N2O production by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) during nitrification in AGS systems was comprehensively investigated. Biochemical and isotopic experiments revealed that increasing DO or decreasing NO2- levels reduced N2O emission factors (by 13.8 or 19.5%) and production rates (by 0.08 or 0.35 mg/g VSS/h) via weakening the role of the AOB denitrification pathway since increasing DO competed for more electrons required for AOB denitrification. Smaller granules (0.5 mm) preferred to diminish N2O production via enhancing the role of NH2OH pathway (i.e., 59.4-100% in the absence of NO2-), while larger granules (2.0 mm) induced conspicuously higher N2O production via the AOB denitrification pathway (approximately 100% at higher NO2- levels). Nitrifying AGS systems with a unified size of 0.5 mm achieved 42% N2O footprint reduction compared with the system with mixed sizes (0.5-2.0 mm) under optimal conditions (DO = 3.0 mg-O2/L and NO2- = 0 mg-N/L).

Direct start-up of aerobic granular sludge system with dewatered sludge granular particles as inoculant

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a promising technology for engineering applications in the biological treatment of sewage. New objective is to skip the conventional granulation step to integrate it into a continuous-flow reactor directly. This study proposed a method for integrating spherical pelletizing granular sludge (SPGS) into a new patented aerobic granular sludge bed (AGSB), a continuous up-flow reactor. AGSB system could be startup directly, and after 120 days of operation, the SPGS maintained a relatively intact spherical structure and stability. With an initial high chemical oxygen demand (COD) volume loading of over 2.0 kg/(m³·d), this system achieved the desired effect as the same as a mature AGS system. The final mixed liquid suspended solids, and the ratio of 30 min-5 min sludge volume index (SVI₃₀/SVI₅) were 20,000 mg/L, and 0.84, respectively. Although hydraulic elution and filamentous bacteria (FBs) had a slightly negative impact on initial phase pollutant removal, the final removal rates for COD, total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-H), and total phosphorus (TP) were 90%, 70%, 95%, and 85%, respectively. The presence of specific functional microorganisms promoted the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), from 90.65 to 209.78 mg/gVSS. The maturation process of SPGS altered the microbial community structures and reduced the species abundance of microbes in sludge.

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in membrane bioreactor: Effect of dissolved oxygen

Membrane bioreactor with the floc activated sludge (mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) = 7500 mg/L) was constructed in this work for simultaneously nitrification and denitrification (SND). The effect of dissolved oxygen (DO) on SND process and the nitrogen pathways were investigated. The average TN removal efficiencies were 63.05%, 91.17%, 87.04% and 70.02% for DO 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 mg/L systems, respectively. The effluent ammonia concentration was continuously lower than 5.0 mg/L when the DO was higher than 1 mg/L. Nitrogen in DO 1 and DO 2 mg/L systems was mainly removed via the SND process. The rise of DO concentration increased the abundance of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and Nitrospira was the predominant NOB in all the four MBRs. Dechloromonas and Azoarcus were the dominant denitrifying bacteria (DNB) in DO 1 systems responsible for nitrite denitrification. The dominant aerobic DNB Pseudomonas also contributed SND via nitrate denitrification and was little affected by DO changes. Nitrate reductase was the main enzyme for the reduction of NO₃^--N to NO₂^--N, and narG was the main responsible gene. Nitrite oxidoreductase was the main enzyme for the oxidation of NO₂^--N to NO₃^--N, and nxrA was the main responsible gene in all the four MBR systems.

Advanced bioelectrochemical system for nitrogen removal in wastewater

Nitrogen (N) pollution in water has become a serious issue that cannot be ignored due to the harm posed by excessive nitrogen to environmental safety and human health; as such, N concentrations in water are strictly limited. The bioelectrochemical system (BES) is a new method to remove excessive N from water, and has attracted considerable attention. Compared with other methods, it is highly efficient and has low energy consumption. However, the BES has not been applied for N removal in practice due to lack of in-depth research on the mechanism and construction of high-performance electrodes, separators, and reactor configurations; this highlights a need to review and examine the efforts in this field. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the current BES research for N removal focusing on the reaction principles, reactor configurations, electrodes and separators, and treatment of actual wastewater; the corresponding performances in these realms are also discussed. Finally, the prospects for N removal in water using the BES are presented.

Temperature-induced difference in microbial characterizations accounts for the fluctuation of sequencing batch biofilm reactor performance

Generally, the purification performance of bioreactors could be influenced by temperature variation via shaping different microbial communities. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, the variation trends of microbial communities in three sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs) under four different temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 °C) were compared. It was found that temperature increment led to an obvious enhancement in nutrient removal which was mainly occurred in the aerobic section. Meanwhile, distinct differences in dominant microbial communities or autotrophic nitrifiers were also observed. The performance of the SBBR reactors was closely associated with nitrifier communities since the treated wastewater was characterized by a severe lack of carbon sources (mean effluent COD ≤ 14.4 mg/L). Spearman correlation unraveled that: most of the differentiated microbes as well as the dominant potential functions were strongly associated with nutrient removal, indicating the temperature-induced difference in microbial community well explained the distinction in purification performance.

Enhanced shortcut nitrogen removal and metagenomic analysis of functional microbial communities in a double sludge system treating ammonium-rich wastewater

Biological nitrogen removal processes based on partial nitrification are promising for ammonium-rich wastewater treatment. In this study, a partial nitrification-denitrification double sludge system was applied to treat synthetic ammonium-rich wastewater. Metagenomic analysis of functional genes and metabolic pathways was conducted, also with the evaluation of system performance and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emission. In the nitrifying sequencing batch reactor (SBR_PN), the removal percentage of ammonium nitrogen reached to 99.98% with a high nitritation efficiency of 93.24%, and the N₂O emission factor was 0.88%. In the denitrifying sequencing batch reactor (SBR_DN), there was almost no nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen in the effluent, and the maximum N₂O emission was 0.078 mg N/L. The dominant ammonia oxidizing bacteria was Nitrosomonas in SBR_PN (13.6%), and the main potential denitrifiers in SBR_DN were Thauera (14.6%), an uncultured genus in the Comamonadaceae family (4.0%), an uncultured genus in Rhodocyclaceae family (2.4%) and Comamonas (1.1%). Metagenomic analysis revealed that amo mainly distributed in Nitrosomonas eutropha (38.3%), Nitrosomonas europaea (27.1%), Nitrosomonas sp. GH22 (20.5%) and Nitrosomonas sp. TK794 (15.0%), and Bacteroidetes had the N₂O reduction potential in SBR_PN.

TiO2/SiO2 decorated carbon nanostructured materials as a multifunctional platform for emerging pollutants removal

Aquatic ecosystem contaminated with hazardous pollutants has become a high priority global concern leading to serious economic and environmental damage. Among various treatment approaches, carbon nanostructured materials have received particular interest as a novel platform for emerging pollutants removal owing to their unique chemical and electrical properties, biocompatibility, high scalability, and infinite functionalization possibility with an array of inorganic nanomaterials and bio-molecules. Within this framework, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used due to their hollow and layered structure and availability of large specific surface area for the incoming contaminants. Carbon nanotubes can be used either as single-walled, multi-walled, or functionalized nanoconstructs. TiO₂/SiO₂-functionalized CNTs are among the most promising heterogeneous photocatalytic candidates for the degradation of a range of organic compounds, heavy metals reduction, and selective oxidative reactions. Herein, we reviewed recent development in the application of TiO₂ and SiO₂ functionalized nanostructured carbon materials as potential environmental candidates. After a brief overview of synthesis and properties of CNTs, we explicitly discussed the potential applications of TiO₂/SiO₂ functionalized CNTs for the remediation of a variety of environmentally-related pollutants of high concern, including synthetic dyes or dye-based hazardous waste effluents, as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pharmaceutically active compounds, pesticides, toxic heavy elements, remediation of metal-contaminated soil, and miscellaneous organic contaminants. The work is wrapped up by giving information on current challenges and recommended guidelines about future research in the field bearing in mind the conclusions of the current review.

Mitigation of environmental pollution by genetically engineered bacteria - Current challenges and future perspectives

Industries are the paramount driving force for the economic and technological development of society. However, the flourishing industrialization and unimpeded growth of current production unit's result in widespread environmental pollution due to increased discharge of wastes loaded with baleful, hazardous, and carcinogenic contaminants. Physicochemical-based remediation means are costly, create a secondary disposal problem and remain inadequate for pollution mitigating because of the continuous emergence of new recalcitrant pollutants. Due to eco-friendly, social acceptance, and lesser health hazards, microbial bioremediation has received considerable global attention for pollution abatement. Moreover, with the recent advancement in biotechnology and microbiology, genetically engineered bacteria with high ability to remove environmental pollutants are widely used in the fields of environmental restoration, resulting in the bioremediation in a more viable and eco-friendly way. This review summarized the advantages of genetically engineered bacteria and their application in the treatment of a wide variety of environmental contaminants such as synthetic dyestuff, heavy metal, petroleum hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, phenazines and agricultural chemicals which will include herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Considering the risk of genetic material exchange by using genetically engineered bacteria, the challenges and limitations associated with the application of recombinant bacteria on contaminated sites are also discussed. An integrated microbiological, biological and ecological acquaintance accompanied by field engineering designs are the desired features for effective in situ bioremediation of hazardous waste polluted sites by recombinant bacteria.

Nitrification and denitrification processes for mitigation of nitrous oxide from waste water treatment plants for biovalorization: Challenges and opportunities

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is a potent greenhouse gas. Even though its emissions is much lesser than CO₂ but its global warming potential (GWP) is 298 times more than CO₂. N₂O emissions from wastewater treatment plants was caused due to incomplete nitrification or incomplete denitrification catalyzed by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and heterotrophic denitrifiers. Low dissolved oxygen, high nitrite accumulation, change in optimal pH or temperature, fluctuation in C/N ratio, short solid retention time and non-availability of Cu ions were responsible for higher N₂O leakage. Regulation of enzyme metabolic pathways involved in N₂O production and reduction has also been reviewed. Sequential bioreactors, bioscrubbers, membrane biofilters usage have helped microbial nitrification-denitrification processes in succumbing N₂O production in wastewater treatment plants. Reduction of N₂O negativity has been studied through its valorization for the formation of value added products such as biopolymers has led to biorefinery approaches as an upcoming mitigation strategy.
