Advancements of the Fluidized Bed Fenton (FBF) Technology for wastewater treatment: Mechanism, mass and heat transfer

Fluidized Bed Fenton (FBF) technology, a fusion of the Fenton method and fluidized bed reactor, has emerged as a superior alternative to conventional Fenton technology for treating organic industrial wastewater. This innovative approach has garnered significant attention from researchers in recent years. While earlier studies primarily focused on pollutant degradation in simulated wastewater and catalyst development, there has been a growing interest in examining the alterations in mass or heat transfer performance attributed to fluidized beds. This paper explores the factors that contribute to the effectiveness of Fluidized Bed Fenton technology in efficiently degrading various challenging organic pollutants, while also reducing iron sludge production and expanding the applicable pH range, through an analysis of reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, combined with the related work of fluid dynamics, the research related to mass and heat transfer inside the reactor of Fluidized Bed Fenton technology is summarized, and it is proposed that the use of computers to establish a suitable model of Fluidized Bed Fenton and solve it with the assistance of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and other software will help to further explore the process of mass and heat transfer inside the fluidized bed, which will provide the basis for the future of the Fluidized Bed Fenton from the laboratory to the actual industrial application.

Remediation technologies for neonicotinoids in contaminated environments: Current state and future prospects

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are synthetic insecticides with broad-spectrum insecticidal activity and outstanding efficacy. However, their extensive use and persistence in the environment have resulted in the accumulation and biomagnification of NEOs, posing significant risks to non-target organisms and humans. This review provides a summary of research history, advancements, and highlighted topics in NEOs remediation technologies and mechanisms. Various remediation approaches have been developed, including physiochemical, microbial, and phytoremediation, with microbial and physicochemical remediation being the most extensively studied. Recent advances in physiochemical remediation have led to the development of innovative adsorbents, photocatalysts, and optimized treatment processes. High-efficiency degrading strains with well-characterized metabolic pathways have been successfully isolated and cultured for microbial remediation, while many plant species have shown great potential for phytoremediation. However, significant challenges and gaps remain in this field. Future research should prioritize isolating, domesticating or engineering high efficiency, broad-spectrum microbial strains for NEO degradation, as well as developing synergistic remediation techniques to enhance removal efficiency on multiple NEOs with varying concentrations in different environmental media. Furthermore, a shift from pipe-end treatment to pollution prevention strategies is needed, including the development of green and economically efficient alternatives such as biological insecticides. Integrated remediation technologies and case-specific strategies that can be applied to practical remediation projects need to be developed, along with clarifying NEO degradation mechanisms to improve remediation efficiency. The successful implementation of these strategies will help reduce the negative impact of NEOs on the environment and human health.

Persistent organic pollutants: The trade-off between potential risks and sustainable remediation methods

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) have become a very serious issue for the environment because of their toxicity, resistance to conventional degradation mechanisms, and capacity to bioconcentrate, bioaccumulate and biomagnify. In this review article, the safety, regulatory, and remediation aspects of POPs including aromatic, chlorinated, pesticides, brominated, and fluorinated compounds, are discussed. Industrial and agricultural activities are identified as the main sources of these harmful chemicals, which are released to air, soil and water, impacting on social and economic development of society at a global scale. The main types of POPs are presented, illustrating their effects on wildlife and human beings, as well as the ways in which they contaminate the food chain. Some of the most promising and innovative technologies developed for the removal of POPs from water are discussed, contrasting their advantages and disadvantages with those of more conventional treatment processes. The promising methods presented in this work include bioremediation, advanced oxidation, ionizing radiation, and nanotechnology. Finally, some alternatives to define more efficient approaches to overcome the impacts that POPs cause in the hydric sources are pointed out. These alternatives include the formulation of policies, regulations and custom-made legislation for controlling the use of these pollutants.

Fluidized-bed Fenton technologies for recalcitrant industrial wastewater treatment-Recent advances, challenges and perspective

In recent years, fluidized-bed Fenton (FBR-Fenton) process has gained more attention in treating recalcitrant industrial wastewater. FBR-Fenton combines the effectiveness of homogeneous Fenton and sludge reduction of heterogeneous Fenton. Comparing to other modified Fenton processes, FBR-Fenton has greater economical and scaling up potential. However, large consumption of Fenton reagents and strict pH control are still the bottlenecks hampering the full-scale application of FBR-Fenton. While prior reviews mainly focused on the operation and performance of FBR-Fenton process, the present study critically discussed the challenges and bottlenecks for its full-scale industrial application. This study also comprehensively reviewed the development strategies for tackling these drawbacks, mainly over the recent five years. Homogeneous FBR-Fenton, heterogeneous FBR-Fenton and heterogeneous FBR-photo-Fenton processes were classified for the first time according to their reaction mechanisms and system designs. Important operational and design parameters affecting the cost-effectiveness of all FBR-Fenton technologies were reviewed, including the fundamentals, common practices and even innovative steps for enhancing the process performance. Up-to-date applications of FBR-Fenton technologies in recalcitrant wastewater/compounds treatment were also summarized, and it was found that upscaling of heterogeneous FBR-Fenton and heterogeneous FBR-photo-Fenton processes was still very challenging. Strategies to overcome the key technical limitations and enhance process cost-effectiveness were discussed in the future perspective part. Furthermore, modelling techniques such as computational fluid dynamics model and artificial neural network were suggested to be promising modelling techniques for speeding up the full-scale applications of FBR-Fenton technologies.
