Adsorption of cadmium by a high-capacity adsorbent composed of silicate-titanate nanotubes embedded in hydrogel chitosan beads

Intrinsically morphological effect of perovskite BaTiO3 boosting piezocatalytic uranium extraction efficiency and mechanism investigation

Developing a convenient, efficient and eco-friendly approach for the recovery of U(VI) ion is a key measure to solve the environmental problems arising from the utilization of nuclear energy. Herein, the high efficiency of uranium extraction is realized by the piezo property of perovskite BaTiO₃, revealing the intrinsically morphological engineering effect on the piezocatalytic performance. Especially, BaTiO₃ nanowires (BTO NWs) exhibit not only an excellent piezocatalytic activity with U(VI) extraction rate of 96.8% in a UO₂(NO₃)₂ aqueous solution compared to 71.3% of BaTiO₃ nanoparticles (BTO NPs), but also a promising piezocatalyst for U extraction in a real U-mining wastewater with various pH ranges. Piezo response force microscopy and finite elemental simulation show that the piezo response of BTO NWs is much higher than BTO NPs. Additionally, some factors (pH, various ions, different powers) are explored on piezocatalytic efficiency for U(VI) extraction. The results from electron spin resonance and the charge/radical capture experiments confirm that the active species (e^-, •O^2-, •OH) stemmed from the piezo induction of BTO NWs and BTO NPs in the piezocatalytic U(VI) reduction process. The present work reveals the structure-performance correlation during piezocatalysis and highlights the crucial role of piezocatalysis in dealing with environmental problems.

Humic acid attachment on chitosan-modified silica gel as an economical, efficient, and selective adsorbent for thorium and uranium removal

A novel, low-cost adsorbent material was prepared by the immobilization of humic acid on a silica gel surface coated with cross-linked chitosan (SiChiHA). The adsorbent was developed to remove selectively of Th(IV) and U(VI) from aqueous solution, including their pre-concentration and separation from lanthanides and high salinity conditions. A simple waste-less humic acid immobilization method was shown to be successful based on FT-IR, SEM-EDS, and zeta potential characterization results. The adsorbent was found to be stable over a wide pH range, with the highest capacities obtained at pH 3.5 (Th(IV)) and pH 5 (U(VI)). Langmuir model calculations yielded a maximum capacity of 30.6 mg g^-1 and 75.4 mg g^-1 for Th(IV) and U(VI). The adsorption process was found to be rapid (half concentration was removed within 10 min) and best described by a pseudo-second order rate equation. Increasing NaCl concentration up to 2 mol L^-1 or lanthanide concentration up to 100 times did not significantly affect the removal efficiency for either Th(IV) of U(VI). Both elements could be sequentially separated by elution with ammonium citrate and nitric acid, respectively. The adsorption-desorption experiment showed that the adsorbent could be used for at least five cycles without significant capacity loss. This study provides insight into the development of low-cost adsorbent with practical functionality, including separation and regeneration ability, the advantageous properties scarcely reported in low-cost adsorbent literature.

Removal of Cd2+ from water containing Ca2+ and Mg2+ using titanate nanotubes modified by carbon

Calcium and magnesium ions usually exist in natural water. When Cd²⁺ is removed from water by adsorption, it will be inhibited by these two ions. Titanate nanotubes (TNTs) have an effective adsorption capacity for Cd²⁺ due to extraordinary ion exchange property. However, TNTs also adsorb Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ in water. In this study, carbon-modified TNT (TNT/C) and TNT/C further treated with acid (TNT/HC) were synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) images show that TNT/C or TNT/HC still keep nanotube morphology. The experimental results show the order of adsorption amount to Cd²⁺ is TNT (171.56 mg/g) > TNT/C (166 mg/g) > TNT/HC (159.88 mg/g) when there is no Ca²⁺ or Mg²⁺. But when there is 0.1 M Ca²⁺ or Mg²⁺ in the water, the order of Cd²⁺ adsorption capacity becomes TNT/HC (44.28, 49.04 mg/g) > TNT/C (58.84, 69.32 mg/g) > TNT (65.52, 70.6 mg/g). It indicates that the surface carbon modification can alleviate the hindrance of Ca²⁺ or Mg²⁺ to Cd²⁺ removal. This is because the carbon on the surface of TNT captured part of Ca²⁺ or Mg²⁺; it made more Cd²⁺ be successfully absorbed by TNT through ion exchange. This mechanism was confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra analysis. The results of this paper can provide ideas for the adsorption and removal of Cd²⁺ in water in the presence of Ca²⁺ or Mg²⁺.

New application of brown sea algae as an alternative to phosphorous-containing antiscalant

Over the past decade, green chemistry research has focused on the importance of protecting the environment, especially to align with UN sustainable development goals by avoiding the use of chemicals that are harmful to the environment and society. In this study, an aqueous extract derived from brown sea algae was prepared and its performance as antiscalant was compared to commercial antiscalant (Hydroxy ethylidene, 1-Diphosphonic Acid, HEDP) and evaluated using electrochemical measurements, conductivity and standard NACE test in addition to microscopic examination. It was found that there is a significant inhibition efficiency of brown algae towards the tested scales as HEDP. The obtained extract had the ability to prevent precipitation of calcium sulphate, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate and strontium carbonate with percent inhibition of 100%, 80%, 84% and 75%, respectively. The inhibitory effect of the extract can be attributed to the presence of carboxylate and hydroxyl groups that are adsorbed on the surface sites and disturb the normal crystal growth of the scale. The results of the study will lead to the discovery of further new applications of ecologically, cost-effective, renewable source and benign antiscalant that can be considered as an alternative to non-green technologies particularly those used in the food and pharmaceutical industries as well as in desalination plants.

Carbon Quantum Dot-Incorporated Chitosan Hydrogel for Selective Sensing of Hg2+ Ions: Synthesis, Characterization, and Density Functional Theory Calculation

A carbon quantum dot-based chitosan hydrogel was prepared in this work as a fluorescence sensor for the selective sensing of Hg2+ ions. Among the eight tested metal ions, the prepared hydrogel exhibited remarkable sensing selectivity and sensitivity toward Hg2+. The results demonstrated that a prominent fluorescence quenching at 450 nm was observed in the presence of Hg2+ with a linear response range of 0-100.0 nM and an estimated limit of detection of 9.07 nM. The as-prepared hydrogel demonstrates pH-dependent fluorescence intensity and sensitivity. The highest fluorescence intensity and sensitivity were obtained under pH 5.0. The excellent sensing selectivity could be attributed to a strong interaction between the hydrogel film and Hg2+ ions to form complexes, which provokes an effective electron transfer for fluorescence quenching. Results from density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirm that the interaction energies (ΔIE) of the hydrogel with three toxic metal ions (Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+) are in the following order: Hg2+ > Cd2+ > Pb2+.

Magnetic nanoadsorbents for micropollutant removal in real water treatment: a review

Pure water will become a golden resource in the context of the rising pollution, climate change and the recycling economy, calling for advanced purification methods such as the use of nanostructured adsorbents. However, coming up with an ideal nanoadsorbent for micropollutant removal is a real challenge because nanoadsorbents, which demonstrate very good performances at laboratory scale, do not necessarily have suitable properties in in full-scale water purification and wastewater treatment systems. Here, magnetic nanoadsorbents appear promising because they can be easily separated from the slurry phase into a denser sludge phase by applying a magnetic field. Yet, there are only few examples of large-scale use of magnetic adsorbents for water purification and wastewater treatment. Here, we review magnetic nanoadsorbents for the removal of micropollutants, and we explain the integration of magnetic separation in the existing treatment plants. We found that the use of magnetic nanoadsorbents is an effective option in water treatment, but lacks maturity in full-scale water treatment facilities. The concentrations of magnetic nanoadsorbents in final effluents can be controlled by using magnetic separation, thus minimizing the ecotoxicicological impact. Academia and the water industry should better collaborate to integrate magnetic separation in full-scale water purification and wastewater treatment plants.

Photocatalytic degradation of azo and anthraquinone dye using TiO2/MgO nanocomposite immobilized chitosan hydrogels

Textile dyes are very toxic to human beings and environment. TiO₂ nanoparticles have been of great interest in treating the organic effluent dyes. While using TiO₂ nanoparticles, there is the electron-hole recombination, which decreases the degradation efficiency of photocatalyst. MgO nanoparticle, when used along with TiO₂, forming TiO₂/MgO nanocomposite act as a barrier for electron-hole recombination. Here, TiO₂/MgO nanocomposites have been immobilized in chitosan beads, where chitosan acts as a support for the nanocomposite. The photocatalysts have been characterized by scanning electron microscope, ultraviolet (UV), X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Methyl orange (MO) and Alizarin Red S (ARS) were used as model dye compounds. For MO, the experimental data have a better fit with Langmuir adsorption model and for ARS, it has a better fit with Freundlich adsorption model. Photocatalytic degradation efficiency of TiO₂/MgO nanocomposite for a reaction time of 90 min towards degrading MO is 83.2% and ARS is 43.8%. Degradation efficiency of TiO₂/MgO/chitosan hydrogels towards degrading MO and ARS is 82.4% and 41.8%, respectively. 3 wt.% is found to be the optimum concentration of MgO in TiO₂/MgO nanocomposite . Degradation of the dye follows first-order kinetics and Langmuir-Hinshelwood model well suites in describing the kinetics of photocatalytic disappearance of the dyes. First-order rate constants for dye degradation under UV irradiation were calculated. TiO₂/MgO/chitosan hydrogels could efficiently degrade MO and ARS dyes with a little lesser efficiency than TiO₂/MgO nanocomposite making the process economically and environmentally a very suitable and favourable process for textile dye degradation.

Removal of Uranyl Ion from Wastewater by Magnetic Adsorption Material of Polyaniline Combined with CuFe2O4

The magnetic adsorption material of polyaniline (PANI) with amino functional group combined with CuFe2O4 (CuFe2O4/PANI nanocomposite) has been described in this work. It has been characterized by TEM, XRD, XPS, BET, FTIR, and VSM, respectively. Significantly, it exhibits extremely high maximum adsorption capacity (322.6 mg/g) for removal of uranyl ions from wastewater at a pH of 4. The adsorption process is consistent with the quasisecond-order kinetic equation, and the isotherm and kinetic data are accurately described by the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. Furthermore, the magnetic CuFe2O4/PANI displays stable adsorption performance for uranyl ions after five cycles of recovery in acid medium, which indicates it possesses good recovery due to its magnetism and excellent regeneration ability for reusability.

Adsorption of Cd to TiO2-NPs Forms Low Genotoxic AGGREGATES in Zebrafish Cells

The aquatic environment is involved in the pollutants spreading mechanisms, including nanomaterials and heavy metals. The aims of this study were to assess the in vivo genotoxicity of Cd (1 mg/L) and to investigate the genomic effects generated by its co-exposure with TiO₂-NPs (10 µg/L). The study was performed using zebrafish as a model for 5, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days of exposure. The genotoxic potential was assessed by three experimental approaches: DNA integrity, degree of apoptosis, and molecular alterations at the genomic level by genomic template stability (% GTS) calculation. Results showed an increased in DNA damage after Cd exposure with a decrease in % GTS. The co-exposure (TiO₂-NPs + Cd) induced a no statistically significant loss of DNA integrity, a reduction of the apoptotic cell percentage and the recovery of genome stability for prolonged exposure days. Characterization and analytical determinations data showed Cd adsorption to TiO₂-NPs, which reduced free TiO₂-NPs levels. The results of our study suggest that TiO₂-NPs could be used for the development of controlled heavy metal bioremediation systems.

Generation-3 Polyamidoamine Dendrimer-Silica Composite: Preparation and Cd(II) Removal Capacity

Generation-3 polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer was implanted on silica to produce a very good adsorbent (G-3 PAMAM-SGA). The composite was characterized and used for the removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution. Kinetic data fit the Lagergren pseudo-second-order model and also follow the intraparticle diffusion kinetic model to an extent, which is an indication that the sorption process is controlled by both mechanisms: intraparticle/film layer and adsorption inside the pores/crevices of the composite. Equilibrium sorption data of Cd(II) on G-3 PAMAM-SGA fit the Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.9993) which is indicative of multilayered adsorption that occurred on heterogeneous surfaces. The ΔG° values for all temperatures studied were negative, which indicated a spontaneous and feasible process. The result implies that G-3 PAMAM-SGA is a promising adsorbent for microscale scavenging of Cd(II) ions in aqueous solutions.

Enhanced heavy metal removal from an aqueous environment using an eco-friendly and sustainable adsorbent

Thiol-lignocellulose sodium bentonite (TLSB) nanocomposites can effectively remove heavy metals from aqueous solutions. TLSB was formed by using -SH group-modified lignocellulose as a raw material, which was intercalated into the interlayers of hierarchical sodium bentonite. Characterization of TLSB was then performed with BET, FTIR, XRD, TGA, PZC, SEM, and TEM analyses. The results indicated that thiol-lignocellulose molecules may have different influences on the physicochemical properties of sodium bentonite, and an intercalated-exfoliated structure was successfully formed. The TLSB nanocomposite was subsequently investigated to validate its adsorption and desorption capacities for the zinc subgroup ions Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II). The optimum adsorption parameters were determined based on the TLSB nanocomposite dosage, concentration of zinc subgroup ions, solution pH, adsorption temperature and adsorption time. The results revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity onto TLSB was 357.29 mg/g for Zn(II), 458.32 mg/g for Cd(II) and 208.12 mg/g for Hg(II). The adsorption kinetics were explained by the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model, implying that the dominant chemical adsorption mechanism on TLSB is monolayer coverage. Thermodynamic studies suggested that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic. Desorption and regeneration experiments revealed that TLSB could be desorbed with HCl to recover Zn(II) and Cd(II) and with HNO3 to recover Hg(II) after several consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles. The adsorption mechanism was investigated through FTIR, EDX and SEM, which demonstrated that the introduction of thiol groups improved the adsorption capacity. All of these results suggested that TLSB is an eco-friendly and sustainable adsorbent for the extraction of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) ions in aqueous media.

PAMPS-graft-Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 multiwalled nanotubes as a novel nano-sorbent for the effective removal of Pb(ii) ions

The existence of Pb(ii) ions in water systems poses significant potential hazards to public health and the environment. In the present study, poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) brush-modified Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 nanotubes were prepared, and their adsorption efficiency against the Pb(ii) ions was investigated. The characterization results of FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, TEM, and XPS indicated the successful grafting of PAMPS on the surface of free Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 NTs, and the prepared PAMPS-g-Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 NTs exhibited a 6-8 nm grafting layer, which could provide abundant binding sites for metal adsorption. During the Pb(ii) removal process, a pH-dependent adsorption behavior was observed, and the adsorption processes fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Compared with unmodified Ni3Si2O5(OH)4, the PAMPS-g-Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 NTs exhibited obviously faster adsorption of Pb(ii) and higher equilibrium adsorption capacity for the removal of Pb(ii). The maximum adsorption capacity calculated via the Langmuir isotherm model was 0.653 mmol g-1 (135.3 mg g-1) at 298 K. In a metal coexisting system, the total adsorption capacity of the NTs was increased; this indicated the potential of the proposed NTs in the removal of Pb(ii) from metal coexisting wastewater. This study showed the significant potential of PAMPS-g-Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 NTs in the effective removal of Pb(ii).
