Attenuation of organics contamination in polymers processing effluent using iron-based sludge: process optimization and oxidation mechanism

Management of Agricultural Water Containing Acetimidothioic Acid Pesticide through Catalytic Oxidation to Facilitate Reclaimed Water Recycling for Sustainable Food Production

Agro-industrial discharge contains acetimidothioic acid, which is commercially named “Lanox 90” and is a widely applied insecticide in greenhouses, and the result is wastewater loaded with this insecticide. Treating such wastewater is a must to reduce the environmental impact as well as to facilitate the opportunity for water recycling. Thus, the present work introduced Montmorillonite (MMT) clay as a novel Fenton reaction source to treat wastewater loaded with Lanox 90 insecticide as a benign sustainable strategy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) supported with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the MMT sample. Response surface methodology based on Box–Behnken analysis was selected to optimize the parametric circumstances. The optimized parameters of the proposed technique were obtained at a pH of 2.6 with the addition of 0.8 and 854 mg/L of MMT and H2O2, respectively, to attain the highest predicted Lanox 90 removal rate of 97%. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to examine the statistical data and displayed a significant quadratic model. Ultimately, the results reveal that the oxidation system is exothermic and has a non-spontaneous nature, and the reaction kinetics are categorized according to the second-order reaction kinetic rate. The results of the current study indicate the importance of MMT for treating wastewater. These results confirm the possibility of using oxidation technique as a suitable candidate for greenhouse effluent management to enhance the efficiency of water recycling for smart irrigation.

Passive co-treatment of phosphorus-depleted municipal wastewater with acid mine drainage: Towards sustainable wastewater management systems

Industrial processes typically produce large wastewater volumes, which, if left untreated, greatly affect receiving ecosystems. However, wastewater treatment can be costly and energy-intensive, with the developing world particularly struggling with wastewater management. As such, simple and cost-effective solutions are urgently required with the passive (no energy or reagents) co-treatment of different wastewater matrices holding great promise. Here, wastewater from a phosphorus recovery system (chemical precipitation) was co-treated with acid mine drainage (AMD). Specifically, phosphorus-rich municipal wastewater was treated with hydrated lime, as to synthesize a wastewater-derived phosphorus product, i.e., calcium phosphate (Ca₃(PO₄)₂), also producing a phosphorous-depleted alkaline effluent. The feasibility of valorising this effluent is examined here by using it for the passive co-treatment of real AMD. Different liquid-to-liquid (v/v) ratios were considered, with the optimum ratio (AMD to phosphate-depleted wastewater) being 1:9. The pH of the co-treated effluent was adjusted to 8.4 (from an initial value of 11.5 in the phosphorus-depleted wastewater and 2.2 in AMD), while metals (∼100% reduction of Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Pb, ≥99.5 for Al, Zn, and Mg, 80% for Cr, and 75% for As) and sulphate (89.26% reduction) contained in AMD were greatly removed. This was also the case for the remaining orthophosphate that was contained in the phosphorus-depleted wastewater (93.75% reduction). The electrical conductivity was also reduced in both the AMD (88.75%) and the phosphorus-depleted wastewater (69.21%), suggesting the removal of contaminants from both matrices. Results were underpinned by state-of-the-art analytical techniques, including FE-SEM/FIB/EDX, FTIR, and XRD, along with geochemical modelling (PHREEQC). Contaminants were removed through complexation, (co)adsorption, crystallization, and (co)precipitation. Overall, results suggest that the co-treatment of these wastewater matrices is feasible and could be directly scaled up (e.g., using waste stabilization ponds), while opportunities for the beneficiation of the produced sludge and for water reclamation (e.g., through membrane filtration) could also arise, further promoting the sustainably of this passive co-treatment method.

Immobilization of Magnetic Nanoparticles on Cellulosic Wooden Sawdust for Competitive Nudrin Elimination from Environmental Waters as a Green Strategy: Box-Behnken Design Optimization

The role of engineering in our society is not to just to continue creating chemicals, but sharing the responsibility for environmentally sound appropriate design of substances for a circular economy. Concerning this contemporary strategy, waste wooden sawdust (WSD) as a biobased by-product is augmented with magnetite (Mag) nanoparticles to meet the concept of cyclic application of resources in environmentally relevant photocatalytic reactions. The physical properties of the prepared WSD:Mag material were characterized to emphasis their structure and morphology by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), then the prepared catalyst was applied in augmentation with hydrogen peroxide as a type of photocatalyst in the form of Fenton's reaction system to oxidize Nudrin pesticide in queues media. Twinned WSD:Mag has been verified to exhibit higher performance than pristine single-phase catalysts. System parameters, i.e., pH, hydrogen peroxide, catalyst dozing, and temperature, were studied to check their effect on the reaction activity. In the present study, further promotion of photocatalytic activity of twinned WSD:Mag was obtained by optimizing the process parameters at the optimal reaction time of 30 min. The optimal results investigated via Box-Behnken design regression model based on response surface mythology (RSM) showed that the photocatalytic activity of the twinned catalyst could reach 94% at pH 2.5 and 386 and 38 m/L of H₂O₂ and WSD:Mag, respectively. The regression coefficient and probability obtained from analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to check the adequacy of the applied model, and were 92% and 0.02, respectively. Additional confirmatory tests were carried out under optimum conditions for verification and agreed with the predicted values. Experimental data analysis revealed that the reaction is well fitted with the second-order reaction model. Thermodynamic parameters highlighted the oxidation reaction is non-spontaneous at high temperature and exothermic in nature and proceeds at a low activation energy barrier (31.46 kJ/mol). Catalyst recyclability was also checked, which confirmed catalyst sustainability and high removal rates (78%) after six cycles of use. This work introduces a new concept to design a promising environmentally benign photocatalyst with high potential for applicability to environmental remediation of agricultural effluents with a view to a circular economy.

Pattern, Forms and Bibliometric Analysis for Systematic Study of Silica-Supported Heterogeneous Solar Photocatalyst for Lannate Insecticide Abatement from Aqueous Stream

Agro-industrial streams with high toxic loadings must undergo for treatment prior to final disposal. Thus, the current investigation aimed to apply cheap and naturally available materials to explore sustainable heterogeneous solar/Fenton reaction for insecticide abatement form waste streams. Iron was collected from the wastewater stream after coal industry. The sand pellets were used as iron support material which acts as a heterogeneous solar photo-catalyst like modified Fenton reaction. The prepared catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) for characterization. System parameters variables were studied using the modified catalysts. Although the acidic pH showed maximal removal efficiency, the catalyst could also work at a wide pH range with a reduced activity. The optimum conditions of the newly synthesized modified Fenton composite showed 103, 45 mg/L for H2O2 and catalyst, respectively, at pH 2.8 within 90 min under solar irradiation for maximal Lannate oxidation reached to 98%. Moreover, the increase in Lannate concentration loading results in a reduction in the removal efficiency from 98 to 96% when the Lannate loading increased from 10 to 50 ppm, although further increase of Lannate (100 ppm) results in only 2% removal. Also, temperature effect was displayed and the high temperature range was unfavorable. The kinetics of Lannate removal was dependent on operation temperature and following the first-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic parameters values settled the system is non-spontaneous in nature, proceeds in endothermic circumstances and working in a low energy barrier (34.54 kJ mol−1). Recyclability confirms the sustainability of the catalyst, and the third cycle catalytic use attained 28% Lannate removal.
