Abstract
Background: Musculoskeletal pain and chronic conditions are associated with deteriorating pain, stress, anxiety, and health-related quality of life (HR-QOL). There is emerging evidence that performing massage therapy as self-management (MTSM) is a viable approach to alleviate these symptoms across various clinical populations. However, a significant gap remains on the effectiveness and limitation of MTSM usage as no systematic review has been conducted to comprehensively evaluate and synthesize the scope, feasibility, and efficacy of MTSM. This systematic review aimed to investigate the effect of MTSM on common symptoms of musculoskeletal and chronic conditions, followed by identifying characteristics of MTSM dosage, setting, and adherence for formulating themes. Methods: A systematic review was carried out using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method, which involved searching seven electronic databases, including Medline (OVID), CINAHL (EBSCO), PEDro, Web of Science (Clarivate), PsycINFO (EBSCO), Google Scholar, and EMBASE (Elsevier) from inception to January 2023. Clinical studies were eligible if they included MTSM, and massage treatment was more than 50% of the intervention. The quality of studies was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project Quality Assessment Tool. Target variables were extracted, including study design, participants' characteristics, outcome measures, massage dosage (duration, frequency, and timing), training setting, provider of massage training, adherence to the MTSM intervention, comparator, and key findings. Results: A total of 17 studies were evaluated and included 770 participants (female: N = 606) with musculoskeletal pain or chronic conditions. The emerged themes for MTSM utilization consisted of arthritis pain (knee, n = 3; neck, n = 1, hand, n = 2), neck and back pain (n = 4), and stress and anxiety (n = 3). Prescribed self-administered massage duration ranged from a single session to a maximum of 8-12 weeks, where 4 weeks (n = 8) was the most commonly prescribed duration. Out of 11 studies that used MTSM as a solo modality, 7 studies (41.2%) showed significant improvement in the outcome measures such as chronic neck and back pain, stress or anxiety, fatigue, quality of sleep, and HR-QOL. In addition, health benefits, including anxiety, depression, pain intensity, and pain threshold, were observed in six studies (35.3%) where MTSM was applied as a coadjuvant modality, which was combined with therapist-applied massage and physiotherapy. Conclusions: These findings support that MTSM is a viable approach to enhance the benefit of therapist-applied massage or as a solo modality for symptom management of musculoskeletal pain and chronic conditions. The review provides suggestions for design improvement, such as reporting participants' adherence to the prescribed massage regimen, that would be informative for providing a robust understanding of the magnitude or the extent to which MTSM is effective. Future studies on MTSM intervention are encouraged to use a theoretical framework and validated measures for determining and facilitating treatment fidelity.

The Feasibility of Tai Chi Exercise as a Beneficial Mind-Body Intervention in a Group of Community-Dwelling Stroke Survivors with Symptoms of Depression. Abstract
Depression is prevalent among one-third to two-thirds of acute and chronic stroke survivors. Despite the availability of pharmacotherapies and/or psychotherapies, depression persists, even for 5–10 years after stroke, reflecting limited treatment responses and/or adherence to this conventional care. Mind-body interventions are commonly used among adults to ameliorate depressive symptoms. Thus, the feasibility of Tai Chi, alongside conventional care, to manage poststroke depression was investigated using a single-group pre-post intervention design. Recruitment and retention, intervention adherence, safety, acceptability, and fidelity were assessed. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were assessed using standardized questionnaires, objective sleep was assessed via a research-grade triaxial accelerometer, and blood samples were taken to measure oxidative stress, inflammatory markers, and a neurotrophic growth factor using commercially available kits per manufacturer's protocol. Pre-post intervention changes were assessed using paired t-tests. We enrolled stroke survivors (N = 11, mean age = 69.7 ± 9.3) reporting depression symptoms. After the intervention, we observed significant reductions in symptoms of depression (−5.3 ± 5.9, p=0.01), anxiety (−2.2 ± 2.4, p=0.01), and stress (−4.6 ± 4.8, p=0.01), along with better sleep efficiency (+1.8 ± 1.8, p=0.01), less wakefulness after sleep onset (−9.3 ± 11.6, p=0.04), and less time awake (−9.3 ± 11.6, p=0.04). There was a 36% decrease in oxidative stress (p=0.02), though no significant changes in the other biomarkers were found (all p values >0.05). Tai Chi exercise is a feasible intervention that can be used alongside conventional care to manage poststroke depression, aid in reducing symptoms of anxiety and stress, and improve sleep.

Abstract
The INYBI is an instrument used to release the suboccipital myofascial area. There is scarce evidence of its efficacy. A randomized controlled, double-blinded, longitudinal and prospective trial was performed. Ninety-six subjects (aged 29.47 ± 5.16 years) (70 women) with chronic neck pain were randomly assigned to the manual suboccipital inhibition technique (MSIT), instrumental suboccipital inhibition (INYBI) or the INYBI plus upper cervical manipulation technique (INYBI + UCMT) groups and received two sessions with a week interval between them. The Neck Disability Index was used before the first intervention and two weeks after the second intervention. Pre- and post-measurements were taken on both intervention days for pressure pain threshold of the upper trapezius and suboccipital muscles, self-perceived pain and cervical range of motion. In spite of a significant general improvement in time that was found for the three groups for all of the outcome measurements (p < 0.05 in all cases), no between-groups differences were found (p > 0.05 in all cases), with the exception of self-perceived pain for left rotation (p = 0.024), with the MSIT group showing the lower improvement. However, the higher degree of within-group improvements was found for the INYBI + UCMT group. It was concluded that the myofascial release therapy in the suboccipital area is effective in patients with chronic neck pain, either through a manual application or by means of the INYBI tool. Moreover, the addition of craniocervical manipulation achieved the higher within-group improvements, but with no statistical significance.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A randomized, single-blinded (the outcome assessor was unaware of participants' allocation group) controlled clinical trial. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of myofascial release therapy (MRT) over the suboccipital muscles, compared with self-MRT using a novel device, the INYBI tool, on pain-related outcomes, active cervical mobility, and vertical mouth opening, in adults with chronic non-specific neck pain (NSNP). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA MRT is used to manage chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions, with purported positive effects. The efficacy of self-MRT, compared with MRT, has been scarcely evaluated. METHODS Fifty-eight participants (mean age of 34.6 ± 4.7 yrs; range 21-40 yrs; 77.6% females, 22.4% males) with persistent NSNP agreed to participate, and were equally distributed into an INYBI (n = 29) or a control group (n = 29). Both groups underwent a single 5-minutes intervention session. For participants in the control group, MRT of the suboccipital muscles was performed using the suboccipital muscle inhibition technique, while those in the INYBI group underwent a self-MRT intervention using the INYBI device. Primary measurements were taken of pain intensity (visual analogue scale), local pressure pain sensitivity, as assessed with an algometer, and active cervical range-of-movement. Secondary outcomes included pain-free vertical mouth opening. Outcomes were collected at baseline, immediately after intervention and 45 minutes later. RESULTS The analysis of variance (ANOVAs) demonstrated no significant between-groups effect for any variable (all, P > 0.05). In the within-groups comparison, all participants significantly improved pain-related outcomes, and showed similar positive changes for mouth opening. Cervical range-of-movement- mainly increased after intervention for participants in the control group. CONCLUSION Both, MRT and self-MRT using the INYBI, are equally effective to enhance self-reported pain intensity, and local pressure pain sensitivity in chronic NSNP patients. For cervical mobility, MRT appears to be slighlty superior, compared with the INYBI, to achieve improvements in this population. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To check the acute effects of manual pressure and traction technique on balance and plantar footprint variables. DESIGN A single-blind clinical study with 2 groups. SETTING Private practice. PARTICIPANTS Healthy participants (N=40; 28 female and 12 male) were recruited to carry out a single-blind study. INTERVENTIONS Experimental group performed a bilateral plantar fascia manual pressure and traction technique. Control group performed a tactile stimulation. The position of the participant, the therapist, and the time of application of the techniques (5min) were the same for both interventions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES We measured stabilometry variables and static footprint. The footprint variables were divided in rear, middle, and front foot areas. RESULTS Significant differences were found in stabilometry variables. There was an improvement in experimental group at X displacement with eyes open (P=.014) and surface eyes closed (P=.046) variables. CONCLUSIONS After technique the experimental group improved the stabilometry variables, specifically surface with eyes closed and X displacement with eyes open. The static footprint variables have not shown differences after the technique compared with the control group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The prevalence of myofascial pain syndrome varies from 21% 93%. Several studies have shown that myofascial induction is effective in treating myofascial pain syndrome. Although these techniques have shown some effectiveness in clinical practice, there have been little study into their effects, and have deep effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate if the application of a single myofascial induction technique for each foot, targeted to the plantar fascia resulted in changes in balance and footprint variables. DESIGN A quasi-experimental study. SETTING An outpatient clinic. SUBJECTS 20 healthy participants (12 females and 8 males) were evaluated pre and post Myofascial induction technique for each foot in plantar fascia during 5 min. METHODS We measured static footprint and stabilometry variables in asymptomatic subjects. The footprint surface area was divided: bilateral rear foot, bilateral midfoot, bilateral fore foot. RESULTS We found differences in the footprint variables: maximun pressure in forefoot (p = 0.025), surface in forefoot (p = 0.03). The myofascial induction has no effects on stabilometry variables. CONCLUSIONS The immediate effects of the longitudinal technique of myofascial induction of the plantar fascia are the increase of surface and maximum pressure in fore foot.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In sports medicine, the interprofessional care of athletes has become a frequent practice. This type of care often involves different interventions used among professionals. One common intervention prescribed is roller massage (RM) or self-myofascial release. The trends in the use of RM among allied health professionals are nonexistent. The surveillance of such responses has not been documented. PURPOSE To survey and document responses in the knowledge, clinical application, and use of RM devices among allied health professionals in the United States. DESIGN Cross-sectional descriptive survey study. METHODS A 20-question survey was sent to allied health professionals including physical therapists, athletic trainers, and fitness professionals. The survey covered topics such as demographics, beliefs about RM, preferred devices, exercise prescription, and client education. RESULTS One thousand and forty-two professionals (N = 1042) completed the survey. Most respondents believed that RM decreases pain (82%) and increases mobility (76%). A high percentage use a foam roller in their practice (81%), recommend a full-size foam roller (49%), and believe the medium density (48%) is the most effective. A high proportion of respondents prescribe RM for injury treatment (69%) and for preexercise and postexercise (61%). They also recommend rolling daily for 30 seconds to 2 minutes per muscle group (33%) at a self-paced cadence (46%). A high percentage of respondents use patient-reported outcomes (74%), joint range of motion (49%), and movement-based testing (48%) to measure effects of RM. Eighty-seven percent use live instruction to educate clients, and 88% believe there is a gap in the research. CONCLUSION The results of this survey document responses in the use of RM among allied health professionals. The reported responses provide insight into how professionals are using RM as an intervention and the potential gaps between the research and professional practice. Future studies are needed to further validate these findings.

Abstract
Background It is acknowledged that preservation of self-determination is very important in order for older adults to experience good quality of life, but to what degree and in what areas people receiving help from home care service experience self-determination is unknown. Few studies have examined the perception of self-determination in relation to quality of life among older adults living at home with help from home care services. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore perceptions of self-determination among older adults living at home with the support of home care services, and to test whether older adults who perceive a higher degree of self-determination also feel they have a better quality of life. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in one municipality in northern Sweden. A total of 134 older adults (≥ 65 years) were included. Data were collected by means of a survey including questionnaires about background characteristics, self-determination, and health-related quality of life. Descriptive statistics regarding background characteristics for groups with high and low self-determination respectively were presented and the differences between the groups were analyzed using the Chi-square test and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results Our main finding shows that the majority of older adults with support from home care services experience self-determination in the dimensions use of time, and self-care. However, a wide variation was found in self-reported self-determination in all dimensions. Results also show that the group with higher self-reported self-determination also reported a greater degree of experienced quality of life in comparison with the group with lower self-reported self-determination. Conclusions In line with earlier research, our results found a positive relation between self-determination and quality of life. The results are relevant for the care of older adults and indicate a need of further research. The results presented in this paper could serve as a guide when planning for improved self-determination among older adults in home care service. Trial registration NCT02846246.
