Abstract
Motor imagery (MI) involves the generation, maintenance, and transformation of motor images; yet, the neural underpinnings of each stage are not well understood. Here, we investigated the role of the left inferior parietal lobe (IPL) in the stages of MI. Healthy participants (N = 20) engaged in a MI task (making judgments about hands presented on a screen; hand laterality judgment task) over two days. Past literature demonstrates the mental rotation of hands in this task involves implicit MI (i.e., where MI occurs spontaneously in the absence of explicit instructions). During the task, active (Day A; 120% resting motor threshold) or sham (Day B; placebo) neuronavigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied to the left IPL (location determined from past neuroimaging work) on 50% of trials at 250, 500, or 750ms post-stimulus onset, corresponding to different stages of MI. A/B days were randomized across participants. Linear mixed effects (LME) modelling conducted on reaction time and accuracy revealed that longer reaction times were observed when TMS was delivered at 750ms after trial onset, and more greatly for active vs. sham stimulation. This effect was exacerbated for palm-vs. back-view stimuli and for left vs. right hands. Accuracy overall was decreased for active vs. sham stimulation, and to a greater extent for palm-vs. back-view stimuli. Findings suggest that the left IPL is involved in image transformation. Overall this work informs on the neural underpinnings of the stages of MI.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Recurrent hamstring injuries are highly prevalent amongst sporting populations. It has been hypothesised that pain from an initial hamstring injury may induce reorganisation of somatosensory representations that could contribute to reinjury. However, because of the cross-sectional nature of existing research, it remains unknown whether somatosensory changes are a cause or effect of pain or if they are driven by other potentially confounding factors. Here, we explored the effect of experimentally induced sustained hamstring pain on tasks that interrogate somatosensory and spatial representations. Fifty healthy participants were randomly allocated to an experimental group that performed an eccentric exercise protocol on the right hamstring to induce delayed onset muscle soreness or a control group performing a repetition-matched concentric exercise protocol. The tactile cortical representation was assessed using two-point discrimination and tactile localisation, whereas the proprioceptive representation was assessed using a left-right judgement task. Peripersonal spatial representations were assessed using an auditory localisation task. Assessments were performed at baseline and day 2. No between-group differences in tactile acuity were observed. However, improvements in left-right judgments and worsening of auditory localisation occurred in the experimental group compared with the control group. This study provides preliminary evidence showing that somatosensory changes occur in response to sustained hamstring pain. Experimentally induced, sustained hamstring pain elicited enhancements in proprioceptive processing and deficits in peripersonal spatial processing, suggesting a shift in the allocation of attentional resources from the external (peripersonal) to internal (body) environment. These findings may hold important implications for reinjury risk and rehabilitation following hamstring pain.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients with chronic headaches and chronic oro-facial pain commonly present psychosocial issues that can affect social interactions. A possible reason could be that patients with these disorders might present impairments in facial recognition, laterality judgement and also alexithymia. However, a systematic review summarizing the effects of facial emotion recognition, laterality judgement and alexithymia in individuals with headaches and oro-facial pain is still not available. AIM The main objective of this systematic review (SR) and meta-analysis (MA) was to compile and synthesize the evidence on the occurrence of alexithymia, deficits in laterality or left-right (LR) recognition and/or facial emotion recognition (FER) in patients with chronic headache and facial pain. METHODS Electronic searches were conducted in five databases (up to September 2023) and a manual search to identify relevant studies. The outcomes of interest were alexithymia scores, speed and accuracy in LR and/or FER, or any other quantitative data assessing body image distortions. The screening process, data extraction, risk of bias and data analysis were performed by two independent assessors following standards for systematic reviews. RESULTS From 1395 manuscripts found, only 34 studies met the criteria. The overall quality/certainty of the evidence was very low. Although the results should be interpreted carefully, individuals with chronic headaches showed significantly higher levels of alexithymia when compared to healthy individuals. No conclusive results were found for the other variables of interest. CONCLUSION Although the overall evidence from this review is very low, people with chronic primary headaches and oro-facial pain could be regularly screened for alexithymia to guarantee appropriate management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Menstrual disturbances harm women's health, and general well-being. As growing evidence highlights the relationship between sleep and menstrual disturbances, it is imperative to comprehensively examine the association between sleep and menstrual disturbance considering the multiple dimensions of sleep. This systematic review aims to identify the association between sleep and menstrual disturbances by evaluating using Buysse's sleep health framework. METHODS A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, psychINFO, and CINAHL to identify publications describing any types of menstrual disturbances, and their associations with sleep published between January 1, 1988 to June 2, 2022. Quality assessment was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies. The findings were iteratively evaluated menstrual disturbances and their association with sleep using Buysse's sleep health framework. This framework understands sleep as multidimensional concept and provides a holistic framing of sleep including Satisfaction, Alertness during waking hours, Timing of sleep, Efficiency, and Sleep duration. Menstrual disturbances were grouped into three categories: premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, and abnormal menstrual cycle/heavy bleeding during periods. RESULTS Thirty-five studies were reviewed to examine the association between sleep and menstrual disturbances. Premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea were associated with sleep disturbances in sleep health domains of Satisfaction (e.g., poor sleep quality), Alertness during waking hours (e.g., daytime sleepiness), Efficiency (e.g., difficulty initiating/maintaining sleep), and Duration (e.g., short sleep duration). Abnormal menstrual cycle and heavy bleeding during the period were related to Satisfaction, Efficiency, and Duration. There were no studies which investigated the timing of sleep. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS Sleep disturbances within most dimensions of the sleep health framework negatively impact on menstrual disturbances. Future research should longitudinally examine the effects of sleep disturbances in all dimensions of sleep health with the additional objective sleep measure on menstrual disturbances. This review gives insight in that it can be recommended to provide interventions for improving sleep disturbances in women with menstrual disturbance.

Abstract
Implicit motor imagery (IMI), with an image laterality discrimination (LD) task, has been proposed as a useful therapeutic tool to restore body schema in patients with chronic pelvic pain (CPP). The aim of this study was to analyse the existence of differences between patients with CPP and healthy individuals in order to justify the use of IMI. An observational, cross-sectional study with non-probabilistic sampling was designed as a one-to-one matched case-control study. Through a web link designed for this purpose, a total of 40 abdominoperineal images were shown to 130 participants during the laterality task. Outcome measures were pain intensity (visual analogue scale, VAS), accuracy, response time (RT), and CPPQ-Mohedo score (Chronic Pelvic Pain Questionnaire-Mohedo). This was an observational, cross-sectional study with a total of 64 CPP patients and 66 healthy individuals. The comparative analysis between groups revealed significant differences in accuracy, CPPQ-Mohedo and VAS (p < 0.001), but not in RT; in patients with CPP, accuracy was correlated with a lower CPPQ-Mohedo score and RT and, the greater the pain intensity, the higher the CPPQ-Mohedo score and RT, and the lower the accuracy. In the LD task, the patients with CPP made more mistakes than the healthy individuals. IMI could be a useful and complementary tool in the therapeutic approach for patients with CPP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluate how Graded Motor Imagery (GMI) may be used in those with knee pain, if individuals with knee pain present with a central nervous system (CNS) processing deficit, and if GMI is associated with improved outcomes. METHODS An electronic database search was conducted of PubMed, SPORTDiscus, CINHAL, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Sports Medicine Education Index using keywords related to GMI and knee pain. This review was reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Out of the 13,224 studies reviewed, 14 studies were included that used GMI for knee pain. Effect sizes were reported with standardized mean differences (SMD). RESULTS Individuals with knee osteoarthritis demonstrated poor performance with correctly identifying images of left or right knees, and GMI improved performance. In contrast, individuals with an anterior cruciate ligament injury demonstrated no evidence of CNS processing deficit and mixed outcomes with GMI. Meta-analysis was limited to individuals post total knee arthroplasty showing low certainty that GMI can improve quadriceps force production [SMD 0.64 (0.07,1.22)], but evidence of no effect to reduce pain or improve Timed up and Go performance and self-reported function. CONCLUSIONS Graded motor imagery may be an effective intervention for individuals with knee osteoarthritis. However, there was limited evidence that GMI was effective for an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Left/right judgment task (LRJT) performance and tactile acuity are impaired in chronic pain conditions, however, evidence is limited for knee osteoarthritis (OA). OBJECTIVE To compare LRJT performance and the two-point discrimination threshold (TPDT) of chronic knee OA patients with asymptomatic knee and pain-free controls. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Fifty knee OA patients and 50 age and gender-matched pain-free controls were assessed using the Recognize® application by displaying knee images and a digital caliper for the TPDT of the medial and lateral knee joint line. RESULTS TPDTs over the lateral joint line in symptomatic (mean difference [MD]: 13.59 mm; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.72, 18.46; d = 1.40) and asymptomatic knee (MD: 10.15 mm; 95% CI: 5.08, 15.22; d = 0.99) were significantly increased compared to pain-free controls. Similarly, TPDTs of the medial joint line were significantly increased in symptomatic (MD: 12.19 mm; 95% CI: 7.59, 16.79; d = 1.31) and asymptomatic knee (MD: 7.64 mm; 95% CI: 3.64, 11.64; d = 1.31) compared to pain-free controls. Patients with knee OA were less accurate (MD: 7.80%; 95% CI: 15.32, -0.27; d = 0.52) recognizing images of their symptomatic knee. No correlation was found between pain severity, pain duration, LRJT performance, and TPDTs. Post-hoc analysis revealed no differences in LRJT and TPDTs between patients with and without clinically relevant symptoms of central sensitization. CONCLUSION Chronic knee OA is associated with increased TPDT for medial and lateral knee joint lines and decreased recognition accuracy performance which should be considered during treatment process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Bodily experience disturbances are frequent among chronic musculoskeletal pain patients and associated with important pain-related psychosocial outcomes (e.g., disability, quality of life). However, the relationship between bodily experience and the psychological dimensions of chronic pain (e.g., affective, cognitive) has only recently garnered attention. This scoping review aimed to identify trends and gaps in research on the nexus between body awareness, body image, and body schema, and psychological processes/outcomes in adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain to inform future directions for research and practice. DATABASES AND DATA TREATMENT This study was guided by Arksey and O'Malley's guidelines and PRISMA-ScR recommendations. Keywords related to body awareness/body image/body schema and pain were searched on PsycInfo and PubMed from database inception until February 16, 2021; 2045 articles were screened, and 41 met the inclusion criteria (i.e., primary quantitative studies investigating body awareness/body image/body schema in relation to pain-related psychological outcomes/processes in chronic musculoskeletal pain). RESULTS The referred bodily experience constructs have been inconsistently defined. Body awareness was the most investigated construct, with consistent operationalization strategies. The links between body schema/body image and pain-related psychological processes/outcomes are still under-investigated. Most studies examined the role of bodily experience as a correlate/predictor of psychological outcomes/processes; overall, a better relationship with one's own body was associated with better pain-related psychological outcomes/processes. CONCLUSIONS Our findings emphasize the relevance of further investigating body-mind relations in musculoskeletal pain and the development of therapies designed to improve the bodily experience within multidisciplinary treatment programs. Suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract
The body schema is a much discussed aspect of body awareness. Although there is still no single definition, there is widespread consensus that the body schema is responsible for movement and interaction with the environment. It usually remains outside of active consciousness. There are only few investigations on influences on the body schema and none of them investigated feeling of satiety or hunger. Thirty-two healthy women were investigated twice, one time sat and the other time hungry. To measure the body schema, we used a door-like-aperture and compared the critical aperture-to-shoulder-ratio (cA/S). A cover story was used to ensure that the unconscious body schema has been measured. We found a significantly higher cA/S for satiety compared to hungry, which indicates that during satiety participants rotate their shoulders for relatively larger door compared to hunger, unconsciously estimating their body size to be larger. We showed that even a moderate rated feeling of hunger or satiety leads to an adjustment in body-scaled action and consequently also an adaptation of body schema. It suggests that, in addition to the visual-spatial and the proprioceptive representation, somatic information can also be relevant for the body schema.

Abstract
Background:Young adults complain of neck pain almost every year. In recent years the ability of motor imagery (kinesthetic and visual imagery) in many musculoskeletal system problems other than neck pain in young adults has been investigated in the literature. The Cross-Sectional study aimed to question motor imagery ability in young adults with chronic neck pain. Methods: Two groups were included in the study: the chronic neck pain group (n = 83) and the control group (n = 91). Motor imagery ability of both groups was evaluated with Movement Imagery Questionnaire-3. Additionally, in the chronic neck pain group, pain was evaluated with the Short Form-McGill Pain Questionnaire, disability was evaluated with the Neck Disability Index, and kinesiophobia was evaluated with Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia. Conclusions: Internal visual imagery and kinesthetic imagery were significantly different between chronic neck pain and control groups. There was a negative linear relationship between disability and internal visual imagery, external visual imagery, and kinesthetic imagery. Motor imagery ability is reduced in young adults with chronic neck pain. In addition, as the severity of disability increases, the motor imagery ability decreases. Therefore, it is considered appropriate to include a motor imagery training program when treating chronic neck pain in the future.

Abstract
Neuralgic amyotrophy is a common peripheral nerve disorder caused by autoimmune inflammation of the brachial plexus, clinically characterized by acute pain and weakness of the shoulder muscles, followed by motor impairment. Despite recovery of the peripheral nerves, patients often have residual motor dysfunction of the upper extremity, leading to persistent pain related to altered biomechanics of the shoulder region. Building on clinical signs that suggest a role for cerebral mechanisms in these residual complaints, here we show and characterize cerebral alterations following neuralgic amyotrophy. Neuralgic amyotrophy patients often develop alternative motor strategies, which suggests that (mal)adaptations may occur in somatomotor and/or visuomotor brain areas. Here, we tested where changes in cerebral sensorimotor representations occur in neuralgic amyotrophy, while controlling for altered motor execution due to peripheral neuropathy. We additionally explore the relation between potential cerebral alterations in neuralgic amyotrophy and clinical symptoms. During functional MRI scanning, 39 neuralgic amyotrophy patients with persistent, lateralized symptoms in the right upper extremity and 23 matched healthy participants solved a hand laterality judgement task that can activate sensorimotor representations of the upper extremity, across somatomotor and visuomotor brain areas. Behavioural and cerebral responses confirmed the involvement of embodied, sensorimotor processes across groups. Compared with healthy participants, neuralgic amyotrophy patients were slower in hand laterality judgement and had decreased cerebral activity specific to their affected limb in two higher-order visual brain regions: the right extrastriate cortex and the parieto-occipital sulcus. Exploratory analyses revealed that across patients, extrastriate activity specific to the affected limb decreased as persistent pain increased, and affected limb-related parieto-occipital activity decreased as imagery performance of the affected limb became slower. These findings suggest that maladaptive cerebral plasticity in visuomotor areas involved in sensorimotor integration plays a role in residual motor dysfunction and subsequent persistent pain in neuralgic amyotrophy. Rehabilitation interventions that apply visuomotor strategies to improve sensorimotor integration may help to treat neuralgic amyotrophy patients.

Abstract
The chronic pain of knee osteoarthritis in the elderly is investigated in detail in this paper, as well as the complexity of chronic pain utilising neuroimaging recognition techniques. Chronic pain in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) has a major effect on patients' quality of life and functional activities; therefore, understanding the causes of KOA pain and the analgesic advantages of different therapies is important. In recent years, neuroimaging techniques have become increasingly important in basic and clinical pain research. Thanks to the application and development of neuroimaging techniques in the study of chronic pain in KOA, researchers have found that chronic pain in KOA contains both injury-receptive and neuropathic pain components. The neuropathic pain mechanism that causes KOA pain is complicated, and it may be produced by peripheral or central sensitization, but it has not gotten enough attention in clinical practice, and there is no agreement on how to treat combination neuropathic pain KOA. As a result, using neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), this review examines the changes in brain pathophysiology-related regions caused by KOA pain, compares the latest results in pain assessment and prediction, and clarifies the central brain analgesic mechanistic. The capsule network model is introduced in this paper from the perspective of deep learning network structure to construct an information-complete and reversible image low-level feature bridge using isotropic representation, predict the corresponding capsule features from MRI voxel responses, and then, complete the accurate reconstruction of simple images using inverse transformation. The proposed model improves the structural similarity index by about 10%, improves the reconstruction performance of low-level feature content in simple images by about 10%, and achieves feature interpretation and analysis of low-level visual cortical fMRI voxels by visualising capsule features, according to the experimental results.

Abstract
Functional movement disorder (FMD) presents as disabling motor symptoms that cannot be explained by organic processes. Despite the lack of lesion or known central nervous system dysfunction, distortion in sensorimotor processing in movement generation and execution is often observed. A person's capacity to judge laterality of a body part requires processing of sensorimotor information. This prospective observational study compared reaction time (RT) and accuracy (ACC) of hand laterality recognition between 30 people diagnosed with FMD and 30 age-matched healthy control participants. The association of RT and ACC with severity of FMD as measured by the Simplified Functional Movement Disorders Rating Scale (SFMDRS) was also explored. RT was on average 0.6 s slower (95% CI 0.4 - 0.8 s, p < 0.001) in patients with FMD (mean 2.2 s, standard deviation (SD) 0.5) than controls (mean 1.7 s, SD 0.3). ACC was on average 8.9% lower (95% CI -15.7 - -2.2, p = 0.01) in patients with FMD (mean 79.6%, SD 16.6) than controls (mean 88.5%, SD 8.1). When adjusted for SFMDRS using robust regression, RT was 0.3 s slower (95% CI 0.01 - 0.5, p = 0.04) in cases than in controls, but ACC was no longer different between groups. There was a moderate negative correlation between RT and ACC in FMD patients (ρ -0.58, p < 0.001 but not in controls (ρ -0.26, p = 0.17). People with FMD had significantly slower RT and lower ACC compared to the control group. These results provide new insights into underlying sensorimotor processing deficits in those with FMD.

Abstract
The Bath Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Body Perception Disturbance Scale ("B-CRPS-BPDS") measures alterations in body perception. We assessed its internal consistency, known group validity, construct validity, and associations with demographic and clinical characteristics. We also evaluated changes in, and baseline predictors of B-CRPS-BPDS scores at follow-up. We included people with CRPS (N = 114) and pain-free controls (N = 69). People with CRPS obtained higher scores than pain-free controls on all B-CRPS-BPDS items, except the item on attention. Because this item also had an insufficient corrected item-total correlation, we propose a revised B-CRPS-BPDS (r-B-CRPS-BPDS) excluding this item. The internal consistency of the r-B-CRPS-BPDS was good. The r-B-CRPS-BPDS showed a large positive relationship with "motor neglect-like symptoms", indicating good construct validity. The r-B-CRPS-BPDS showed positive relationships with pain intensity, fear of movement, depression, and upper limb disability. There were no independent relationships with handedness, affected side, affected limb, disease duration, CRPS severity score, tension, anger, fatigue, confusion, and vigour. Finally, r-B-CRPS-BPDS scores did not consistently change over time. Our results demonstrate the utility of the r-B-CRPS-BPDS for measuring body perception disturbances in CRPS. PERSPECTIVE: This article evaluates the validity of the Bath Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Body Perception Disturbance Scale ("B-CRPS-BPDS") in CRPS, and assesses relationships with demographic and clinical variables. The proposed revised B-CRPS-BPDS appears to be a valid measure of body perception disturbances in CRPS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disrupted tactile acuity and poor laterality judgement have been shown in several chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions. Whether they are impaired in people with frozen shoulder (FS) remains unknown. OBJECTIVES To determine whether there is impairment in tactile acuity and laterality judgement in subjects with FS. METHODS Thirty-eight subjects with idiopathic FS and 38 sex and age-matched healthy controls were enrolled. The two-point discrimination threshold (TPDT) over the affected and unaffected shoulder of patients with FS and shoulder of healthy controls was evaluated. In addition, all participants performed a left/right judgment task (LRJT). Independent and dependent t-tests were used to compare group means. Pearson-product moment coefficient correlations between pain intensity and duration and LRJT and TPDT were calculated for the FS group. RESULTS The TPDT over the affected shoulder was significantly increased compared to the unaffected shoulder (mean difference, 3.82 mm; 95% confidence interval [CI]:0.53, 7.10; p = .02) and controls (mean difference, 5.80 mm; 95% CI: 1.09, 10.52; p = .02). Patients with FS were less accurate (mean difference, 5.90%; 95% CI: 0.36, 11.43; p = .03) and slower (mean difference, -0.26 s; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.45; p = .01) responding to images of their affected shoulder compared to their unaffected shoulder. No associations were found between pain intensity and duration and either TPDT or laterality judgement. CONCLUSIONS Participants with FS demonstrated reduced tactile acuity and impaired laterality judgement over their affected shoulder compared to their unaffected shoulder. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sensory and motor disturbances are characteristic of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Rehabilitation interventions aimed at remediating these disturbances are traditionally exclusively targeted to the affected area. However, there is some evidence of bilateral changes in sensory and motor function associated with unilateral injuries and conditions suggesting central changes. Deficits on specific cognitive tasks have also been documented in persons with chronic pain. PURPOSE The purpose of the present study was to determine if participants with unilateral pain arising from heterogeneous wrist/hand injuries and conditions demonstrate bilateral changes in sensory and motor functions as well as cognitive deficits. DESIGN/METHODS Sensory (Pressure Pain Thresholds, Two Point Orientation Discrimination), Motor (grip strength and Purdue Pegboard), and Cognitive function (Stroop test and mental rotation task) were measured in 30 participants with wrist/hand pain and 30 healthy control participants in an observational cross-sectional study. RESULTS Participants with unilateral wrist/hand pain demonstrated differences in cognitive function measured with the Stroop test (p = 0.03). They also demonstrated bilateral sensorimotor differences in pressure pain thresholds (p = 0.03), grip strength (p = 0.00) and Purdue pegboard test (p = 0.03) results compared to healthy control participants. CONCLUSION Cognitive as well as bilateral alterations in sensory and motor function in participants with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions suggest central changes are involved in their pathophysiology. These findings in persons with heterogeneous injuries/conditions suggest that these changes are not specific to an injury/condition. Bilateral sensorimotor changes have important implications with regards to the pathophysiology of musculoskeletal disorders of the wrist/hand, for rehabilitative interventions and research.

Abstract
Acute abdominal pain (colic) is the most common reason for emergency veterinary treatment in the horse. Consolidation of data through a systematic review is important to inform evidence-based medicine and clinical guidelines, but there are currently no published systematic reviews on colic in the horse. The aim of this study was to identify, categorize and appraise the evidence on factors associated with increased risk of developing abdominal pain (colic) due to gastrointestinal disease in the adult horse. A scoping review was performed to identify and categorize evidence on all risk factors for colic. A systematic review of management-related risk factors was then performed following PRISMA guidelines. Both searches were conducted in Medline, CAB Abstracts and Web of Science databases, and publications were assessed against inclusion and exclusion criteria. For the scoping review, study and participant characteristics of included publications and key results were extracted and tabulated. For the systematic review, cohort, case-control or cross-sectional studies investigating acute abdominal pain in horses within two weeks of management changes were assessed. Study characteristics, participant characteristics and study results of included publications for the systematic review were extracted and tabulated. Included publications were appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools for cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies. The scoping review search identified 3,756 publications. Fifty eight studies met final inclusion criteria, and 22 categories of risk factors were identified. These were grouped into three broad areas: horse-related factors, management-related factors and environment-related factors. The largest body of evidence related to management change. The systematic review of management change identified 410 publications: 14 met inclusion criteria for analysis. These consisted of one cohort, eight case-control and five cross-sectional studies. The studies were conducted between 1990-2008, and the majority of studies were located in the USA (8/14) or UK (3/14). The risk factors related to management change that were assessed were feed, carer, exercise, pasture, water and housing. The largest bodies of evidence for increased risk of colic associated with management change were changes in feed (5/14 publications) and recent change in housing (3/14). Most studies (8/14) did not meet the JBI criterion on confounding factors. There was marked heterogeneity of study methodologies and measures. This is the first study to use a combined scoping and systematic review to analyse evidence for modifiable risk factors for a common condition in the horse. It provides a comprehensive review that will be a key resource for researchers, veterinary practitioners and horse owners. It identified modifiable risk factors associated with an increased risk of colic which should be a key target for preventative health programmes. The findings from the critical appraisal were used to develop recommendations for future research to improve the quality of evidence-based veterinary medicine.
