Analysis of the Dong bao Ye as sacred landscape and its Putative therapeutic mechanisms

Humans have innately established close and profound ties with the, and through these relationships shaped many kinds of landscapes. Among these are sacred landscapes, which have drawn the attention of researchers due to their cultural significance. In the field of health geography, large-sized sacred regional landscapes are now the focus of studies for their therapeutic properties. However, few scholars have focused on small sacred landscape systems at the community level (constructed by local communities) or the physical and psycological health benefits that these landscapes offer to the local residents. These small-sized and widespread, but often hidden, sacred landscapes are closely tied to people's daily lives and work. They have evolved and grown over millennia to become critical sociocultural phenomena. This study takes the sacred bao ye landscape of the Dong people of China as the research subject. By adopting the case study approach, field research, semi-structured interviews, and textual analysis, it summarizes the types, geographical distribution, rituals and processes of bao ye as a sacred landscape of the Huanggang village in Guizhou Province, and concludes with an analysis of motivation and health benefits to the bao ye worship. In this paper we argue that bao ye is a sacred landscape system focusing on the healthy development of children, and constitutes a local belief developed in an isolated environment lacking medical resources, which remains in practice. The sacred landscape of bao ye offers a therapeutic environment, providing children with increased opportunities to engage with and build deep connections to nature. Thruogh this process children may develop a bond with nature that inspires them to protect nature on their own accord. We argue that bao ye offers an important case study for understanding the landscape-people-healing interactivity at the community level.

The Relationship Between Spirituality and Resilience and Well-being: a Study of 529 Care Leavers from 11 Nations

Research has found that individuals who were separated from parental care and experienced alternative care settings during childhood are more likely to have poor outcomes as adults. This highlights the importance of understanding factors that are related to resilience and well-being for care leavers. A growing body of research has supported the importance of spirituality in our understanding of resilience and well-being. However, little work to date has examined the relationship of spirituality to outcomes in care leavers. The current study investigated the relationships between spirituality, resilience, well-being, and health in a sample of 529 care leavers from 11 nations. It also examined how different themes of spirituality were related to specific outcome variables. Data revealed that spirituality was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, better mental and physical health, and more resilience even when accounting for current age, gender, age at separation, Human Development Index scores, and childhood adversity. Furthermore, findings indicate that different themes of spirituality are related to specific outcome variables, even when accounting for demographic information. Findings indicate that spirituality may play an important role in resilience and well-being for care leavers. Implications and limitations are discussed.

Facing Muscular Dystrophy During Covid-19 Pandemic: The Role of Support Associations and Spirituality

Several researches in scientific literature analyze the theme of Muscular Dystrophy (MD), As well as many others focus on the theme of the Covid-19 pandemic; however, there is a rather limited number of studies that analyse how the pandemic has affected the life of people suffering from MD, especially during the time of the first lockdown in the spring of 2020. The present study has applied a qualitative research design with the aim to investigate how patients with MD have lived the social restrictions imposed for the contagion containment and whether the assistance of associations for their support has contributed to make the participants feel closer or more distant from the spiritual dimension. The analysis involved 12 participants, and they were presented with a semi-structured interview. The data obtained from the interviews have been analysed through a thematic analysis from which 4 thematic areas have emerged: (1) the impact of the pandemic on an emotional level; (2) the illness management and the role of family; (3) the role of the associations; (4) aspects related to spirituality. The crucial role that the closeness of family and the activities promoted remotely by the associations for patients' support has emerged, since they have allowed the participants to feel united by something beyond, to discover new aspects of themselves, to give more value to Life and to move closer to their spiritual dimension.

Spiritual Emergency and Occupational Identity: A Transpersonal Perspective

The subject of spirituality has been developing over recent years in occupational therapy journals internationally and this article contributes to the ongoing exploration of spiritual issues in therapeutic practice. People can experience a transformational crisis through engaging in spiritual growth and development, a phenomenon that has been termed a ‘spiritual emergency’. A spiritual emergency manifests itself as a crisis within ego-identity and can include experiences of disorientation and de-adaptation, which affect a person's ability to function in daily life. Consequently, a person may be diagnosed and treated for a mental health problem; however, a spiritual emergency may present a person with opportunities to engage in a process of self-renewal rather than being considered ill.

The dichotomy of a spiritual emergency as reflecting human potential or a mental health problem is a complex issue, which underpins many of the discussions concerning health professional involvement. This article argues that there are clear therapeutic needs for people experiencing a transformational crisis, which are well suited to the skills of occupational therapists. Engaging in occupation could play an important role in the process of re-adaptation during a spiritual emergency through enabling occupational identity, which could support the process of self-renewal. A case vignette is provided to illustrate the theoretical position outlined.

Psychological Well-Being and Meaning-Making When Caregiving for Children with Disabilities: Growth through Difficult Times or Sinking Inward

This study examines how meanings of caregiving occupations differ between caregivers of children with disabilities with high versus low self-rated psychological well-being. Thirty-nine caregivers completed in-depth interviews about their caregiving and Psychological Well-being Scales. A nonparametric test confirmed that differences in well-being were not associated with income, education, or depressive symptoms. The qualitative analysis revealed one global meaning dimension for caregiving (broadening of self, family, and world) and five situational level meaning dimensions of caregiving (intensity of caregiving, diminished personal control, perspective on caregiving demands, depth of conviction about the value of this life course, and present dwelling). For the global meaning and one dimension (broadening of self and personal control), triangulation between a relevant scale and the qualitatively generated dimension confirmed qualitative findings of differences between the high and low well-being groups. Findings suggest that 75% of caregivers describe frequently challenging caregiving demands. Those with self-rated high well-being construct a more positive view of the meaning of this experience that bolsters their capacity to engage in caregiving work.

Determining relationships between physical health and spiritual experience, religious practices, and congregational support in a heterogeneous medical sample

Previous research indicates that increased religiosity/spirituality is related to better health, but the specific nature of these relationships is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between physical health and spiritual belief, religious practices, and congregational support using the Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality and the Medical Outcomes Scale Shortform-36. A total of 168 participants were surveyed with the following medical disorders: Cancer, Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Stroke, plus a healthy sample from a primary care setting. The results show that individuals with chronic medical conditions do not automatically turn to religious and spiritual resources following onset of their disorder. Physical health is positively related to frequency of attendance at religious services, which may be related to better health leading to increased ability to attend services. In addition, spiritual belief in a loving, higher power, and a positive worldview are associated with better health, consistent with psychoneuroimmunological models of health. Practical implications for health care providers are discussed.

Spiritual therapeutic landscapes and healing: a case study of St. Anne de Beaupre, Quebec, Canada

Very little work has addressed spirituality in relation to health and well-being using the therapeutic landscape framework. Certainly the larger geographical literature, and specifically that of cultural geography, has identified the spiritual aspects of landscapes/places, and in so doing, has highlighted their importance for both secular groups and broader society alike. The increased recognition of the positive relationship between being spiritually active and health begs the examination of spiritual places reputed for their healing and healthful qualities. This paper provides a case study, conducted in 2006-2007, of a Christian pilgrimage site named St. Anne de Beaupre (Quebec, Canada); the analysis contributes to filling the spirituality gap in the therapeutic landscapes literature and offers a number of suggested research directions to better understand spiritual landscapes/places and their association with health.

Perceived Need for Spiritual and Religious Treatment Options in Chronically Ill Individuals

The objective of the study was to examine the desire for spiritual and religious treatment options in chronically ill adults. Email interview data ( N = 12) generated themes for religion, spirituality, and desired treatments. The resultant questionnaire data ( N = 83) analysed the popularity of treatments. Thirty-five wide-ranging spiritual and religious treatment options were identified for use in the questionnaire; 47 per cent of the sample was interested in spiritual or religious treatments. There is a need for spiritual and religious treatment options, and translation of treatments into practice would assist coping for many people.

Possible influence of spiritual and religious beliefs on hypertension

Religious and spiritual beliefs are beneficial in stroke patients as coping strategies. This work has investigated the feeling of people about it by proposing to 174 volunteers aged 54.0 +/- 16.9 years the Royal Free Interview (RFI). Interviewed subjects considered the beliefs beneficial for health independently of their form. Ascertaining the pre-morbid understanding of life in subjects at risk of hypertension may be useful to verify self-confidence and coping possibilities against anger, fear, and stress, factors that may exert a negative effect.

A spiritually-based measure of holistic health for those with disabilities: development, preliminary reliability and validity assessment

PURPOSE

To develop and test a spiritually-based measure of holistic health for those with chronic physical conditions.

METHOD

Two studies are reported. Study One used 69 ex-patients with chronic physical conditions to develop a spiritually-based holistic measure of health. An open-ended questionnaire, the Participant Health Questionnaire used the echo technique to obtain statements about the nature of health. These were assembled to form the Rating of Health Statements Questionnaire, which was completed by 59 participants. Reliability and validity analysis yielded a 38-item Health Attitude Scale, the HAS:1, to which the responses of 48 participants produced the 40-item HAS:2, which included an Intent subscale. Wording the HAS:2 in the past tense then created a behavioural measure, the QE Health Scale (QEHS). Study Two used 233 participants from the same population with chronic conditions to assess the reliability of the HAS:2 and QEHS, and their validity against the STAI and the SOC-13.

RESULTS

The QEHS proved reliable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.92) and valid in that it correlated with the SOC-13 (r = 0.32, p < 0.01), the STAI (State) (r = 0. - 39, p < 0.01), the STAI (Trait) (r = 0.35, p < 0.01), the HAS:2 (Importance) (r = 0.61, p < 0.01) and the HAS:2 (Intent) (r = 0.61, p < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

The QEHS possessed sufficient reliability and validity as a spiritually-based holistic measure of health to warrant further investigation.

The QE Health Scale (QEHS): assessment of the clinical reliability and validity of a spiritually based holistic health measure

PURPOSE

To assess the clinical reliability and validity of a holistic health measure, the QE Health Scale (QEHS), for use with people with physical disabilities.

METHOD

A test-retest design saw the QEHS administered and compared with established measures of health at admission and discharge from three-week inpatient rehabilitation programmes. Data was analysed by factor and correlation analysis. Clinician-reported credibility and usefulness of the theoretical basis of the QEHS, the QEHS itself, and Patient Profiles derived from the QEHS were also used to evaluate clinical validity.

RESULTS

The QEHS was judged to possess satisfactory reliability and validity.

CONCLUSION

The QEHS is a clinically reliable, valid, credible and useful holistic health instrument to facilitate client-centred therapeutic interventions, inform decision-making and evaluate outcomes for people with physical disabilities.
