Exercise self-efficacy is weakly related to engagement in physical activity in persons with long-standing spinal cord injury

PERFORMANCE OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE IN SEDENTARY PEOPLE’S AUTONOMY

ABSTRACT Introduction Sedentary people are more likely to be affected by obesity and cardiovascular diseases than regularly practicing physical activity. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the effects of physical exercise on the health of sedentary people. Objective Study the physical exercise effects on physical activity and autonomy in sedentary people. Methods Structural equations and mathematical statistics were used to analyze sedentary people’s autonomy during physical exercise and the repercussions of the activity on the practitioners’ physique. Results Sedentary people increased confidence and self-esteem after participating in physical exercise. Their physical functions could be effectively improved after practicing physical exercises. Conclusion Effective and realistic suggestions for improving exercise awareness were presented, considering the particular conditions of sedentary people. Physical exercise also helps sedentary people to develop exercise confidence by improving their overall self-efficacy level. Evidence Level II; Therapeutic Studies – Investigating the results.

The Current Health Belief of Exercise Conditions of Chinese College Students and Ways of Improvements: An Analysis Based on the Health Belief Model

The purpose of this study was to discuss the differences in the parameters of exercise health beliefs among college students of different genders, and assess the relationship between demographic factors and parameters of exercise health beliefs, and examine the relationship between exercise self-efficacy and internal components of exercise health beliefs. A total of 313 Chinese college students from the Sichuan University of Arts and Science completed the exercise health belief scale voluntarily under the tutor’s explanation. The results showed that compared with female students, male students have higher perceived benefits and self-efficacy of exercise and lower perceived subjective and objective barriers. Monthly family income has a significant positive correlation with exercise self-efficacy and a negative correlation with perceived subjective barriers to exercise disorder. Exercise self-efficacy has a positively correlated with perceived benefits and perceived severity and a significant negative correlation with perceived subjective and objective barriers. From the structural equation model, we found that family income no longer significantly impacted exercise self-efficacy. Within the exercise health belief items, we found only that there were negative relationship between perceived subjective barriers and exercise self-efficacy. According to the study, our findings provide a new psychological angle for understanding the exercise condition of college students and the restraining factors and provide new insights into increasing exercise self-efficacy to lower the subjective barriers to exercise. Future studies will focus on evaluating the relationship between exercise health belief components and college Students’ physical activity levels and exercise behaviors.

Association Between Exercise Self-Efficacy and Health-Related Quality of Life Among Dialysis Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background

Exercise self-efficacy is a vital determinant of an individual’s active participation in regular exercise, and exercise is a critical component of improving health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in dialysis patients. This study aimed to describe the relationship between exercise self-efficacy and HRQOL in dialysis patients.

Materials and Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shanghai, China. Structured questionnaires distributed to the patients collected socio-demographic and disease-related information. Physical activity was assessed by a self-administered questionnaire, and the exercise self-efficacy scale (ESES) was used to measure exercise self-efficacy. HRQOL was evaluated by the kidney disease quality of life instrument-short form version 1.3 (KDQOL-SF™ v1.3). Data were analyzed using a univariate generalized linear model, Spearman correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression.

Results

A positive association was observed between exercise self-efficacy and HRQOL (r = 0.310, p < 0.001). Physical activity as a predictor variable explained 9.8% of the variance in overall HRQOL (p < 0.001). Exercise self-efficacy explained an additional 7.1% of the HRQOL variance. In total, 24.6% of the variation in the HRQOL was explained by the socio-demographic variables, disease-related factors, physical activity, and exercise self-efficacy.

Conclusion

Overall, only 16.9% of the change in HRQOL was explained by physical activity and exercise self-efficacy. Future research is still needed to further explore the factors influencing the HRQOL in dialysis patients. However, this finding suggests the need to consider the importance of HRQOL and physical activity as well as exercise self-efficacy when developing intervention programs.

Factors associated with exercise self-efficacy among people with chronic diseases

AIM

The aim of this study is to assess the level of exercise self-efficacy in a population with chronic diseases and identify the factors that could influence exercise self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND

Performing physical exercise is an important part of self-care in chronic diseases. It is highly influenced by individual's self- efficacy. However, little attention has been given to the identification of the factors that could affect the exercise self-efficacy among people with chronic diseases.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the exercise self-efficacy among people with chronic diseases using the Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale (ESE). Demographic and exercise profiles were also collected.

RESULTS

A total of eighty-five people with chronic diseases from outpatients' clinics participated in this study. The mean age of the participants was 52 ± 13.92 and more than half of them were females (58.8%). The mean score of exercise self-efficacy was 39 ± 21.55. Education level was the main factor that correlated with lower levels of exercise self-efficacy.

CONCLUSIONS

This study is first to provide preliminary evidence about levels of exercise self-efficacy and its associated factors among people with chronic diseases in Saudi Arabia. The level of exercise self-efficacy is low in people with chronic diseases and this mainly associated with educational factor. Nurses have an important role to promoting exercise self-efficacy through implementing a comprehensive plan that is patient's centered approach. However, further research is needed to assess perception, detect barriers and conduct intervention that aims to improve exercise Self-efficacy.
