Possible determinants of long-term adherence to physical activity in multiple sclerosis—theory-based development of a comprehensive questionnaire and results from a German survey study

Physical Activity in Individuals Newly Diagnosed With Multiple Sclerosis Through the Lens of the COM-B Model

BACKGROUND

Physical activity (PA) is a promising intervention for disease modification and symptom management in multiple sclerosis (MS); however, there is a lack of research focusing on PA behavior change interventions for persons newly diagnosed with MS. Such PA behavior change interventions should be developed based on a strong empirical foundation of understanding the behavior and its determinants (ie, what to target for changes to occur). To that end, this qualitative study examined factors explaining PA in persons newly diagnosed with MS and identified potential targets for future behavior change intervention development based on the Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) model.

METHODS

Twenty individuals diagnosed with MS within the past 2 years underwent one-on-one semistructured interviews using questions developed based on the COM-B model. Data were analyzed using reflective thematic analysis, and the identified themes were then mapped with the COM-B model.

RESULTS

Factors explaining PA in the study sample were identified across the COM-B components. The typical factors include knowledge and skills to sufficiently engage in PA with appropriate approaches, ability to adapt and navigate through new environmental and social difficulties after diagnosis, and motivation resulting from a combination of factors, such as outcome expectation, belief of capabilities, role/identity, reinforcement, and emotions.

CONCLUSIONS

The COM-B model was applied successfully in this study to understand PA behavior and identify potential targets for behavior change in individuals newly diagnosed with MS. Future behavior change interventions should consider addressing these factors to generate effective PA behavior change in this population.

Effects of tele-exercise training on physical and mental health and quality of life in multiple sclerosis: Do the effects differ by modality and clinical disease course?

INTRODUCTION

Tele-exercise training has improved mental and physical health and quality of life (QOL) in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), but there is little known about the comparability of effects across modalities and clinical disease courses.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effect of tele-Pilates and tele-yoga training on physical and mental factors and QOL in PwMS, with a focus on two phenotype classifications - relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and secondary progressive MS (SPMS).

METHODS

Eighty-two persons with RRMS (n = 48) and SPMS (n = 34) were randomly assigned into tele-Pilates (n = 29), tele-yoga (n = 26), or control (n = 27). The tele-exercis training was conducted three times per week for eight weeks.

RESULTS

Significant time × group interactions were observed for QoL (p = 0.01), physical activity levels (p < 0.001), mental health (p = 0.05), and a decline in depression (p = 0.002) following tele-Pilates and tele-yoga. The corresponding subfactors, including pain, energy, emotional well-being, and role limitation due to emotional and physical problems, have shown significant improvements after interventions compared with control (all p < 0.05). The effects of exercise over control did not depend on MS phenotype (all p > 0.05).

DISCUSSION

Tele-yoga and tele-Pilates exercises improved QoL and mental and physical health in PwMS, and the benefits were similar across both MS phenotypes. These findings highlight the potential of implementing tele-yoga and tele-Pilates as non-pharmacological mind-body symptomatic treatments for individuals with both RRMS and SPMS.

Association of health behaviour and clinical manifestation in early multiple sclerosis in Germany - Baseline characteristics of the POWER@MS1 randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Receiving a multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis is a significant stressor. Therefore, highly individualised counselling is needed, especially in early MS. Modifiable risk factors (e.g. smoking and obesity) are gaining relevance in MS. Despite evidence for worse MS-related health outcomes, prevalence of adverse health behaviours, such as smoking and physical inactivity, is high across all MS stages. However, knowledge regarding health behaviours as well as their association with MS-related health outcomes among newly diagnosed PwMS in Germany is scarce. Currently, the efficacy of an interactive digital lifestyle management application intended to be used as an add-on to standard care among newly diagnosed PwMS in Germany is evaluated in an ongoing multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) ('POWER@MS1').

OBJECTIVES

To describe baseline disease characteristics and health behaviours of the POWER@MS1 cohort and investigate associations between MS characteristics, quality of life (QOL), health behaviours and intention to optimise health behaviour habits.

METHODS

This study included 234 persons with early MS from 20 study centres located across Germany who participate in the POWER@MS1 RCT. Participants were recruited by treating neurologists from different regions and health-care settings in Germany. Baseline data was obtained using paper-based questionnaires and a web-based healthy diet screener between July 2019 and end of March 2022 and analysed descriptively.

RESULTS

In this early MS cohort (mean disease duration 4 months), a screening tool showed severe symptoms of anxiety in 15 % of the participants. Better means for stress management appeared to be particularly relevant for the whole cohort. Moreover, 19 % were current smokers, 15 % were obese and 36 % were insufficiently physically active. On average, participants only moderately adhered to dietary guidelines for recommended intake of key food groups (e.g. vegetables, fruits and fatty marine fish). Higher EDSS scores were associated with approximately 20 % higher T2-lesion burden (rate ratio RR=1.2, p<0.001) and 13 % higher relapse rate (RR=1.13,p=0.02) per EDSS disability level. Moreover, a higher T2-lesion burden was associated with current smoking (RR=0.76, p=0.033), resulting in approximately 24 % less T2-lesions at disease onset among non-smokers. In addition, smoking was associated with unhealthier dietary habits according to lower diet scores (linear regression coefficient β=-1.27, p<0.001). Higher EDSS scores (β=0.19,p<0.001) and higher BMI (β=0.013,p=0.03) were associated with higher HAQUAMS (lower QOL). Further, lower diet scores (β=-0.044,p=0.039) were associated with lower QOL. Moreover, higher HAQUAMS (lower QOL) indicated a higher intention to optimise stress management (β=0.98,p<0.001), physical activity (β=0.74,p=0.046) and sleep behaviour (β=1.82,p<0.001). Further, higher intention to optimise stress management was accounted for by higher EDSS scores (β=0.39,p=0.004) and a higher number of T2-lesions (β=0.029,p=0.015) in this newly diagnosed MS cohort.

CONCLUSION

Results indicate a clear need for modifications of health behaviours among newly diagnosed PwMS participating in POWER@MS1. Individualised psychological and health behaviour counselling appears to be an important factor in treatment, also for similar early MS cohorts and particularly in those who demonstrate a more severe disease in clinical and MRI metrics.

The MoXFo initiative - adherence: Exercise adherence, compliance and sustainability among people with multiple sclerosis: An overview and roadmap for research

We know very little about exercise adherence, compliance and sustainability in multiple sclerosis (MS), yet adherence is seemingly important for yielding immediate and sustained health benefits. This paper is focused on exercise adherence, compliance and sustainability in the context of informing research and practice involving MS. This focus is critical for clarifying terminology for future research and providing a roadmap guiding clinical research and practice. Our objective was accomplished through a narrative summary of the literature by a panel of experts on exercise adherence from the Moving Exercise Research in Multiple Sclerosis Forward (MoXFo) initiative and a concluding summary of the state of the literature and future research directions. The panel of experts identified three overall themes (Background and Importance; Understanding and Promoting Exercise Adherence, Compliance and Sustainability and Challenges to Exercise Adherence, Compliance and Sustainability) that represented a categorization of nine subthemes. These overall themes and subthemes formed the basis of our recommendations regarding future research broadly involving exercise adherence in MS. Overall, there is limited evidence on rates and determinants of exercise adherence and compliance in MS, and little is known about techniques and interventions for immediate and long-term exercise behaviour change.

Physical Activity and Quality of Life in Persons Newly Diagnosed With Multiple Sclerosis: A Cross-sectional Study

OBJECTIVE

To examine the association between physical activity (PA) and quality of life (QOL) in persons newly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) who have been under-represented in MS research.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study with secondary data analysis.

SETTING

General community.

PARTICIPANTS

The study included 152 persons newly diagnosed with MS (ie, diagnosed with MS within the past 2 years) aged 18 and older (N=152).

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Participants completed the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire to measure PA. QOL, disability status, fatigue, mood, and comorbidity were assessed using the 12-Item Short Form Survey (SF-12), Patient Determined Disease Steps, Hamburg Quality of Life Questionnaire Multiple Sclerosis, and comorbidity questionnaire.

RESULTS

The bivariate correlations indicated that PA was significantly and positively associated with the physical component of QOL (ie, SF-12 PCS) (r=0.46). The stepwise multiple linear regression analysis indicated PA as associated with SF-12 PCS (β=0.43, R2=0.17) when solely included in the model. After controlling for fatigue, mood, disability status, and comorbidity as covariates (R2=0.63), the association between PA and SF-12 PCS was still statistically significant, but attenuated in magnitude (β=0.11).

CONCLUSIONS

This study observed that PA was significantly associated with the physical component of QOL in persons newly diagnosed with MS, even after controlling for covariates. The findings underscore the importance of developing behavior change interventions targeting PA while addressing the roles of fatigue and disability status for enhancing the physical component of QOL of this MS subpopulation.

Acceptability of a digital health application to empower persons with multiple sclerosis with moderate to severe disability: single-arm prospective pilot study

BACKGROUND

Many persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) desire to learn how health behaviour changes (e.g., dietary adjustments, physical activity, improvements in stress management) might help them manage their disease. Previous research has shown that certain health behaviour changes can improve quality of life (QoL), fatigue and other MS outcomes. Digital health applications may be well suited to deliver relevant health behavioural interventions because of their accessibility and flexibility. The digital health application "levidex" was designed to facilitate health behaviour change by offering evidence-based patient information and cognitive-behavioural therapy techniques to pwMS. By doing so, levidex aims to improve QoL and MS symptoms such as fatigue and mental health.

OBJECTIVES

A previous study reported on the development of levidex; this non-randomised pilot study examined the feasibility (practicability and acceptability) of levidex in pwMS with moderate to severe disability. Furthermore, the intervention's impact on empowerment, stress management, and relevant health behaviours (e.g., dietary behaviour, physical activity) was explored.

METHODS

levidex was originally developed for newly diagnosed pwMS in the first year after diagnosis and eventually modified to offer access to pwMS with moderate to severe disability. Participants (n = 43) with an Expanded Disability Status Scale between 3.5 and 7.5 and a disease duration of more than one year were eligible to participate. The intervention was used over a period of six months with measurement time points at baseline, month 3 and month 6.

RESULTS

Out of 38 participants who completed the six-month intervention period, 18 (47.4%) completed all 16 modules and 9 (23.7%) reached modules 13-16, the long-term maintenance part of levidex. Participants rated levidex positively in terms of practicability and acceptability and had only few points of criticism such as to include more physical exercise routine suggestions suitable for participants with severe impairment. Data on secondary endpoints showed no significant changes.

CONCLUSION

This pilot study provided evidence for the practicability and acceptability of levidex, a digital health application designed to facilitate health behaviour change in pwMS with moderate to severe disability. Adequately powered randomised controlled studies with longer follow-up periods are needed to clarify the benefit of levidex in pwMS with moderate to severe disability.

Health behaviors of people with multiple sclerosis and its associations with MS related outcomes: a German clinical cohort

Background

Health behaviors in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) have been associated with MS-related disease outcomes.

Objective

The aim of the study was to gain knowledge about current patient health behaviors in a convenience sample representative for pwMS presenting to a large university-based outpatient clinic and to investigate associations between modifiable risk factors with physical impairment, quality of life (QoL) and cardiovascular comorbidities.

Methods

A questionnaire was administered at the MS Outpatient Clinic of the University Medical Center Hamburg Eppendorf asking for health behaviors regarding dietary habits assessed with the German adaptation of the validated Spanish short Diet Quality Screener (sDQS), level of physical activity assessed with the Godin Leisure Time Questionnaire (GLTEQ) and tobacco smoking. Participants were asked to report cardiovascular comorbidities using items from the Self-Report Comorbidity Questionnaire for Multiple Sclerosis. Additionally, cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure, height and weight (to calculate BMI) and waist circumference were measured. MS specific clinical data, e.g., disease course, duration, disability and MS-specific QoL were collected from the clinical database. Descriptive analyses were performed and multivariate regression analyses for complete cases were carried out for each of the three outcome variables including all mentioned modifiable risk factors (dietary behavior, smoking, physical activity and BMI) as independent variables.

Results

In this sample of 399 pwMS the mean age was 42 years (SD 12.8) with a mean disease duration since diagnosis of 7.4 years (SD 8.4) and a mean EDSS of 2.8 (SD 1.9). 24% were current smokers, 44% were insufficiently physically active and 54% did not follow a healthy dietary pattern. 49% of this relatively young clinical population was overweight and 27% reported one or more cardiovascular comorbidities. Most modifiable risk factors showed no convincing associations with MS-related disease outcomes in the multiple regression analyses.

Conclusion

This clinical cohort of pwMS shows a high prevalence of critical health behaviors and comorbidities and emphasizes the need for monitoring, education and assistance for behavior change in this population.

Physical activity behavior in persons newly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis: Applying the Capability - Opportunity - Motivation - Behavior (COM-B) model

BACKGROUND

Physical activity (PA) research in multiple sclerosis (MS) typically has not focused on persons newly diagnosed with the disease. This is noteworthy as PA might be most amenable for change in the early stages of MS and further yield long-term benefits over the disease course.

PURPOSE

This study examined correlates of PA based on the Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) model in persons newly diagnosed with MS.

METHODS

Participants newly diagnosed with MS (i.e., ≤ 2 years; n = 152) completed an online Qualtrics survey that assessed PA levels and COM-B constructs. Multivariate Analysis of Variance and Discriminant Function Analysis identified the constructs that differentiated PA groups.

RESULTS

The results indicated that 39.5% and 34.2% of the sample were classified as Insufficiently Active and Not Regularly Active, respectively. The results further identified Intention, Action Control, Action Self-efficacy, Action Planning, Outcome Expectation, Goal Setting, and Recovery Self-efficacy, and Fatigue as the primary correlates of PA in persons newly diagnosed with MS.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results identified COM-B constructs in the Capability and Motivation domains as the primary correlates of physical activity in persons newly diagnosed with MS. Such research might inform interventions for changing physical activity in this MS subpopulation.

The barriers and facilitators to health-promoting lifestyle behaviors among people with multiple sclerosis during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: a content analysis study

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Health-promoting lifestyle behaviors (HPLBs) have a significant impact on disease management among people with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly affected lifestyle of all individuals, particularly patients with chronic diseases. The present study aimed to explore the barriers and facilitators to HPLBs among people with MS during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

This qualitative study was conducted in Iran. Participants were sixteen people with MS purposively selected from the central MS clinic of a referral specialty neuroscience hospital in Tehran, Iran. Data were collected via in-depth semi-structured face-to-face interviews and concurrently analyzed through conventional content analysis.

FINDINGS

The mean of participants' age was 37.93 years and most participants were female (81.25%). The major barriers to HPLBs were lack of knowledge, limited access to resources, and poor health status, while the major facilitators were attention to inner abilities and social support.

CONCLUSION

Many different factors such as lack of knowledge, limited access to resources, poor health status, awareness, and social support can influence engagement in HPLBs among people with MS. Healthcare authorities and policymakers need to use quality educational and supportive interventions to improve knowledge, health literacy, perceived support, self-efficacy, and self-care ability among people with MS during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Relevance of Competences for a Healthy, Physically Active Lifestyle in Persons with Multiple Sclerosis: a Path Analytical Approach

To promote health and counteract the decline associated with the disease, persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) are advised to lead healthy, physically active lifestyles. The physical activity-related health competence (PAHCO) model posits that individuals must meet three integrated, person-related requirements for the adoption of such a lifestyle: movement competence, control competence, and self-regulation competence. To gain insights into the needs and challenges of pwMS, the goal of the present study was to empirically examine the roles of these competences within this target group. A total of 475 pwMS underwent a multidimensional, online-based assessment of PAHCO. These participants self-reported their amount of physical activity (PA), health status, disease-related, and sociodemographic information. We used a series of path analyses to investigate the relevance of the three competence areas for each individual's PA level and subjective health. Stepwise multivariate analyses revealed that self-regulation competence was significantly associated with overall PA volume. In contrast, movement competence did not contribute to this prediction. Control competence was also not related to PA level. However, in accordance with the PAHCO model, this factor exerted an independent, qualitative effect on participant health. In summary, self-regulation competence appears to play a crucial role with regard to PA volume. Specifically, control competence appears to be key for the qualitative aspect of PA promotion, characterizing the individual's application of an appropriate stimulus for the achievement of health. Integrating the promotion of self-regulation and control competences into rehabilitation practices can help to foster healthy, physically active lifestyles in pwMS.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/08964289.2021.1935437 .

Identifying the factors affecting 'patient engagement' in exercise rehabilitation

Background

Despite the proven benefits of exercise rehabilitation for numerous health conditions, musculoskeletal injuries and recovery from surgery, patient adherence to such programs is reported to often be less than 35%. Increasing patient engagement therefore has the potential to improve patient health outcomes, benefiting the patient, their carers and the services that support them. The aims of this review were to identify the factors that contribute to ‘patient’ engagement in prescribed exercise rehabilitation using the COM-B (capability, opportunity, motivation-behaviour) framework of behavioural analysis.

Methods

Five electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov) were searched. ‘COM-B’ was the key word searched for specifically within titles and abstracts, combined with either ‘physical activity’ OR ‘exercise’ included using the ‘AND’ operation. Records were then filtered and excluded following full-text screening based on the predetermined eligibility criteria.

Results

Twenty studies were included in the review. The main COM-B themes highlighted for improving patient engagement were: capability—improving patient knowledge and cognitive skills for behavioural regulation, such as ‘action planning’ and ‘action control’, which could also benefit time-management; opportunity—a balanced life situation that enabled time to be devoted to the exercise program, social support, easily accessible and affordable resources and services; and motivation—increasing patient levels of self-efficacy and autonomous motivation, which were noted to be influenced by levels of perceived ‘capability’, additionally ‘motivation’ was noted to be influenced by patients perceiving the benefits of the exercise, and adherence to the program was promoted by ‘goal-setting’. Other issues in the ‘capability’ domain included a fear and/or dislike of exercise.

Conclusion

Patient engagement behavior has been shown to be influenced by both external (opportunity) and intrapersonal variables (capability and motivation). Those prescribing exercises within a rehabilitation program need to discuss these factors with their patients and co-design the exercise rehabilitation program in partnership with the patient, since this is likely to improve patient engagement, and thereby result in superior health outcomes. Furthermore, these factors need to be a consideration in clinical trials, if the findings from such trials are to translate into mainstream healthcare settings.

Motivation for Physical Activity in Adults with Multiple Sclerosis: A Self-determination Theory–Based Approach

Background: Despite the benefits of regular physical activity (PA), most adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) are insufficiently active. Identifying the motivational correlates of PA is necessary to facilitate health behavior change. The extent to which the constructs of psychological need satisfaction and motivational regulations associate with self-determined PA in adults with the disease was examined.

Methods: Individuals with MS were provided a link to a web-based survey. There were 290 respondents: 242 women and 48 men aged 22 to 71 (mean ± SD, 49.50 ± 12.05) years with primarily mild-to-moderate mobility impairment who completed the Psychological Need Satisfaction in Exercise scale, the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire.

Results: Path analysis revealed that PA was best predicted by integrated regulation, competence, and mobility, explaining 28% of the variance in PA behavior. All three need satisfaction variables (relatedness, competence, and autonomy) and mobility impairment accounted for 43% of the variance in integrated regulation.

Conclusions: Increasing satisfaction of the need for relatedness, competence, and autonomy can lead to more integrated and internally motivated PA engagement in adults with MS.

Changing Behaviour towards Aerobic and Strength Exercise (BASE): Design of a randomised, phase I study determining the safety, feasibility and consumer-evaluation of a remotely-delivered exercise programme in persons with multiple sclerosis

BACKGROUND

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic progressive neurological disease. Evidence attests to the benefits of exercise, guidelines for exercise in multiple sclerosis are available. Remote-delivery of exercise adherence programmes based on the exercise guidelines require urgent testing.

AIMS

The design, and outcomes of Behaviour towards Aerobic and Strength Exercise in MS (BASE-MS), a remotely-delivered exercise training study based principles of behaviour change, will further evaluate the remote-delivery of the current exercise guidelines.

METHODS

BASE is a 4-month clinically relevant randomised controlled trial to explore the delivery of a remotely supervised, guidelines-based exercise programme for persons with multiple sclerosis, underpinned by principles of health behaviour change. Initially, 72 persons with mild to moderate multiple sclerosis will be randomised in a 1:1:1 allocation to receive the BASE programme, or act as controls continuing usual care. On programme completion, exercise participants will be further randomised to an optimised adherence treatment or usual adherence. Our online survey assesses the primary outcome of exercise participation, and secondary outcomes of symptoms, and correlates of behaviour change at baseline, month four, month five and month eleven. Online surveys will capture coach and participant feedback to identify the contexts, mechanisms and outcomes of BASE implementation.

CONCLUSIONS

The research and clinical landscape for MS management must remain in-step with public health and health communication. BASE tests the remote-delivery of the current exercise guidelines for exercise in persons with MS. Safety, feasibility and evaluative outcomes will provide rich data for future remote-delivery of exercise in neurological conditions.

Current and Long-Term Physical Activity Among Adults with Multiple Sclerosis in the United States: COM-B Variables as Explanatory Factors

BACKGROUND

Physical activity is an evidence-based, safe second-line approach for improved multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms and disease progression. This study examined the contributions of Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) factors for understanding engagement in current and long-term physical activity among persons with MS in the United States (U.S.).

METHOD

Adults with MS in the U.S. (N = 854) completed an online survey that included questions regarding demographic and clinical characteristics, COM-B constructs, Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ), and Physical Activity Staging Questionnaire (PASQ). Participants were classified into groups based on the GLTEQ regarding current physical activity behavior and PASQ for long-term physical activity behavior. MANOVA and discriminant function analysis (DFA) identified COM-B constructs that differentiated physical activity groups.

RESULTS

MANOVA analyses indicated that all COM-B constructs were significantly different for both GLTEQ current physical activity groups (Wilks's λ = .5, F(44, 1432) = 14.8) and PASQ long-term physical activity groups (Wilks's λ = .4, F(44, 1464) = 16.9) status except Information Provision. DFA analysis regarding GLTEQ identified a function including exclusively Capability and Motivation sources of behavior that differentiated current physical activity groups such as intention and self-efficacy. DFA for PASQ identified a different function of the Capability and Motivation sources of behavior that differentiated long-term physical activity groups; the primary differentiating variables were action control and intention.

CONCLUSION

Our results identify internal factors as the primary COM-B predictors of current and long-term physical activity among adults with MS in the U.S., and health promotion interventions may focus on assessing individual competencies and behavioral regulation for changing physical activity in MS.

Motivations Toward Exercise Participation: Active Persons With Multiple Sclerosis Have Greater Self-directed and Self-capable Motivations

OBJECTIVE

To investigate differences in motivation perceptions toward exercise per self-determination theory and theory of planned behavior between active and insufficiently active persons with multiple sclerosis, given the well-being enhancements associated with exercise engagement for this population.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional between-groups design where active persons ≥14 points on the Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire, and insufficiently active <14.

SETTING

Community setting in Australia.

Australian participants (N=70; mean age, 49.61±12.79y; FIM 64:6; Patient Disability Disease Steps median, 3).

Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire and adaptations of the self-determination theory (autonomous and controlling forms of motivation) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitudes to exercise, subjective norms to exercise, behavioral control to exercise, intention to exercise) items tailored toward exercise perceptions.

RESULTS

Active persons perceived higher ratings compared with insufficiently active persons of autonomous motivations toward their exercise d=0.85 in addition to positive attitudes toward the value of exercise d=1.28, their behavioral control over exercise d=1.86, and their enhanced intentions to engage in exercise d=1.14. All effect sizes were large (d>0.80).

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest the value of considering ways of enhancing the perceived autonomy toward engaging in physical activity in addition to the reduction of barriers toward participating and enhancing positive attitudes toward the value of physical activity when practitioners are working with persons living with multiple sclerosis.
