Abstract
Growth and response to Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge in Lohmann LSL-Lite pullets when fed a source of omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FA) and yeast bioactives (YB) from hatch through to 16 wk of age (woa) were investigated. Co-extruded full fat flaxseed and pulse mixture (FFF; 1:1 wt/wt) supplied n-3 FA and YB were yeast cell walls processed with β-1,3-glucan hydrolase. A total of 1,064-day-old pullets were placed in cages (19 birds/cage) and allocated to 7 diets (n = 8). The iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous diets were control, control + 1, 3, or 5% FFF and + 0.025, 0.05, or 0.1% YB. The birds had ad libitum access to feed and water. Body weight (BW), feed intake, and lymphoid organs weight were recorded. At 15 woa, 2 pairs of pullets/cage received intravenous injection of either 1 mL of sterile saline without or with 8 mg LPS/kg BW. Injected pullets were bled, monitored for BW and cloaca temperature at time points within 168 h. Birds fed 1% FFF were heavier (P < 0.04) than birds fed other diets at 16 woa with FFF and YB exhibiting non-linear responses. Control birds had heavier (P = 0.02) thymus at 4 woa. Spleen weight increased quadratically (P < 0.05) in response to FFF at 8 and YB at 16 woa. The LPS increased cloaca temperature and altered concentration of several plasma metabolites (P < 0.05). The interaction (P < 0.05) between LPS and diet was such that control birds exhibited lower creatine kinase (CK) upon challenge with LPS relative to birds fed other diets. The LPS birds fed 1% FFF and 0.05% YB showed higher plasma albumin than non-LPS cohorts. Non-LPS birds fed control, 1 and 3% FFF had higher plasma K than LPS cohorts. In general, FFF and YB exhibited linear and quadratic effects (P < 0.05) on select plasma metabolites. In conclusion, dietary provision of n-3 FA and YB influenced pullet BW at sexual maturity, development of lymphoid organs and modulated some plasma metabolites in response to LPS.

Abstract
The influence of the Ca and nutrient content of the diet fed from 16 to 19 wk of age, on egg production, egg quality, and tibiae mineralization, was studied in brown egg-laying hens from 16 to 63 wk of age. The experimental design was completely randomized with 4 prelay diets organized as a 2 × 2 factorial with 2 levels of Ca (2.5 vs. 3.8%) and 2 standardized ileal digestible Lys (g/kg) to AMEn (Mcal/kg) ratios (DLys:ME; 2.84 vs. 3.13) as main effects. From 20 to 63 wk of age, all hens received a common diet with 2.75 Mcal AMEn/kg, 0.75% DLys, and 3.8% Ca. Each treatment was replicated 18 times and the experimental unit was a cage with 10 hens. Hen production and egg quality traits were measured by period (4 wk), feeding phase (prelay and lay), and cumulatively (16-63 wk of age) and tibiae mineralization was measured at 63 wk of age. During the prelay phase, an increase in Ca delayed egg production (P = 0.065), reduced feed intake (P < 0.05), and increased BW gain (P < 0.01) and percentage of shell of the egg (P < 0.05). An increase in the DLys:ME ratio increased feed intake (P < 0.01) and reduced egg size (P < 0.01). Nutrient content of the prelay diets did not affect hen production during the lay phase, except egg weight that increased (P < 0.05) in hens previously fed the low DLys:ME ratio. Eggshell quality (weight, percentage, strength, and thickness) in this phase was better (P < 0.05) in hens previously fed 3.8% Ca. Cumulatively (16-63 wk of age), hens fed the high Ca prelay diets had better shell quality but tibiae mineralization was not affected. In conclusion, an increase in Ca content of the prelay diet from 2.5 to 3.8% improved shell quality for the entire egg cycle without showing any negative effect on hen production.

Abstract
Nutrition during the pre-lay period takes effect on the production performance in the laying flock. This study evaluated the effects of dietary energy and protein levels in pre-lay diet on performance during the whole laying period and the egg quality, bone quality, and mRNA expression of hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis-related genes of hens at the end of the laying cycle. A total of 1,856 15-wk old Hy-Line brown pullets were randomly assigned to one of the four dietary treatments: using a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with 2 energy levels (2,700 and 2,800 kcal/kg ME, respectively) and 2 protein levels (15 and 16.5% CP, respectively). Pullets were fed ad libitum from 15 to 20 wk and from 20 wk onward, fed with a similar laying diet till 72 wk of age. At 72 wk, the expression of genes in the hypothalamus, pituitary, ovarian, and follicles and bone quality was evaluated. At 72wk, there were no differences in production performance, BW, organ index, and ovarian parameters among the dietary treatments. High-CP diet increased the egg shape index and eggshell thickness (p < 0.05), but the eggshell breaking strength, Haugh unit, and albumen height did not differ among the treatments. Neither dietary energy nor protein level took an effect of bone quality. Low-energy diet increased the mRNA expression of gonadotropin-releasing hormone-1 (GnRH-1) in the hypothalamus (p < 0.05). The mRNA expression level of estrogen receptor-1 (ESR-1) in the hypothalamus and ovary was elevated by the 2,700 ME-15%CP diet (p < 0.05). The expression of cytochrome family 17 subfamily A polypeptide 1 (CYP17A1) in the large white follicle (LWF), small yellow follicles (SYF) and dominant follicle (DF) was decreased by the 2,800 kcal/kg diet (p < 0.05). These results indicate that the prelay diet had no influence on the production performance but had minimal effect on the eggshell characteristics and bone parameters. These results suggest that the energy and protein level of the prelay diet changes the expression of HPG axis-related genes of hens around the end of the laying cycle without changing the circulating sex hormone profile. The effect of prelay diet on the endocrinal adjustment at the end of the laying cycle needs to be investigated further.

Abstract
Simple Summary The present work was designed to maximize an agro-industrial by-products’ benefits in an environmentally safe manner. This study explores the antioxidative effects of pomegranate peels as dietary additives on the performance of laying hens in the pre-peak period under oxidative stress induced by dexamethasone. Pomegranate peel powder was included at 2% and 4% in the diets of laying hens exposed to oxidative stress induced by dexamethasone compared with negative and positive control groups for 12 weeks. Based on the obtained results, the current study recommends the possibility of using dietary pomegranate peels up to 4% not only for alleviating the adverse effects of oxidative stress in the pre-peak laying period but also as a sustainable and economical approach for agricultural development. Abstract This experiment was conducted to assess the inclusion of the by-products of pomegranate peels to ameliorate the harmful impacts of oxidative stress in the pre-peak period of laying hens. For this, 120 local Egyptian strain hens (Inshas hens) aged 24 weeks old were used in four treatments. Pomegranate peel powder was included at 2% and 4% in the diets of laying hens subjected to oxidative injuries induced by dexamethasone compared with negative and positive control groups for 12 weeks. The addition of pomegranate peel powder (PPP) reduced the adverse effects of oxidative stress induced by dexamethasone on body weight (p = 0.006) and egg production (p = 0.010) comparing to the positive control. Additionally, pomegranate peel powder had a significant positive lowering effect on plasma cholesterol (p < 0.001) and triglyceride contents (p = 0.005) compared to control groups. The lipid peroxidation indicators (MDA) were reduced, but the antioxidative enzymes (SOD, CAT, and GPx) and total antioxidant blood capacity were improved with PPP. Based on the obtained data, the present research recommends using dietary PPP up to 4% to mitigate adverse oxidative stress effects in the pre-peak laying period and as a sustainable and economical approach for agricultural development.

Abstract
Context
To obtain a good performance of the hens in the laying phase, adequate nutrition in the growth and pre-laying phase is necessary, especially for meeting amino acid requirements that are related to development of reproductive organs (ovary and oviduct).
Aims
The objective of the present study was to predict the requirements for methionine (Met) plus cystine (Cys) from the growth of the body, feathers and reproductive organs of laying hens.
Methods
The model estimates Met+Cys requirements as the relationship between the deposition of Met+Cys into three compartments (body, feathers, and reproductive organs) and their utilisation efficiency. The efficiency of utilisation was determined by a linear regression between Met+Cys deposition and intake for pullets aged 14–28, 56–70 and 98–112 days. Protein weight and deposition in the body and feathers were determined by the comparative slaughter method. The Gompertz function was used to model body, feathers, ovary, oviduct and liver weight against age.
Key results
Our results showed that the inclusion of parameters descriptive of the growth of reproductive organs and the correction for feather losses in the model enabled Met+Cys requirements for growth in pre-laying trials to be predicted with a greater precision.
Conclusions
The model developed in this study for determining the Met+Cys requirements for Dekalb White pullets could be extended, provided the necessary adjustments are made, to other amino acids, strains and species.
Implications
Meeting Met+Cys requirements in the phase of maximum growth of the reproductive organs (weeks) contributes to the uniformity of the age when the pullets reach sexual maturity and, consequently, start the egg production.
