A study on the determination of body condition score and somatic cell count in Turkish Saanen goats

Changes in ghrelin, microminerals, antioxidants and vitamins A, E and C levels during different physiological status in high yielding Saanen goats subjected to heat stress

The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of ghrelin, microminerals, antioxidants, and vitamins A, E and C levels during different metabolic periods in high yielding Saanen goats subjected to heat stress. Twenty clinically and paraclinically healthy, high yielding and multiparous goats with an average age of 3 ± 0.5 years and pregnant with a single fetus were included in this study. Sampling was performed at three different physiologic periods: non-pregnancy non-lactation (P₁), four-month gestation (P₂), and first month of lactation (P₃). In this study, the ambient temperature ranged from 19 to 42 °C and relative humidity ranged from 14 to 19% during the hot months. Serum concentrations of ghrelin, glucose (Glu), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), vitamins (A, E and C) and microminerals (selenium, manganese, cobalt, iron, copper and zinc) were measured. Mean raw milk yield of the goats per day at the first month of lactation was 2.34 ± 0.2 kg. Concentration of ghrelin at P₁ was significantly lower than P₂ and P₃ (P < 0.05). Glucose levels were significantly lower at P₃ compared with P₁ and P₂ (P < 0.05). There were no significant correlations between ghrelin and Glu at different periods. Concentrations of selenium and manganese were significantly higher at P3 compared with P2 and were significantly higher at P2 compared with P1. Values of copper at P2 were significantly higher than P1 and P3 (P < 0.05). Zinc levels were significantly higher at P₁ compared with P₂ and P₃ (P < 0.05). Values of antioxidants and vitamins were significantly lower at P3 compared with P2. It is concluded that high yielding Saanen goats may suffer from hormonal and metabolic disturbances, oxidative stress and micromineral deficiencies during late gestation and the first month of lactation especially when they are subjected to heat stress.

Evaluation of morphological traits and physiological variables of several Chinese goat breeds and their crosses

The current study was undertaken to evaluate some morphological traits of the goat breeds raised in Southwest China. The field experimentation and data collection were from 434 animals presenting seven breeds of the Dazu black goat (DBG; n = 203), Saanen milk goat (SMG; n = 50), Black Boer × Dazu black goat (BXC; n = 28), Hechuan white goat (HWG; n = 49), Inner Mongolia Cashmere goat (IMCG; n = 25), IMCG × DBG (F₁; n = 57) and F₁ × F₁ (F₂; n = 22). All studied animals were adult and selected to be at the same age (36.50 ± 0.75 months). After editing, more than 20 morphological and production traits like body condition score (BCS), testicle measurements, coat colour, fibre traits, skin colour, horn colour, horn shape, horn orientation, wattles, front hair, beard, ear shape, ear size, rump angle, hind leg angulation and physiological variables were analysed. BXC and DBG had dark coat colour, whilst SMG, HWG and IMCG had light colour, whilst F₁ and F₂ ranged from light to dark coat colour. Concerning BCS, the breeds BXC and DBG were characterized as fat goats, whilst SMG, HWG, F₁ and F₂ were average, whilst IMCG was thin. The maximum values for testis measurements were recorded for BXC, SMG and DBG. For fibre traits, IMCG, F₁ and F₂ were the most superior. BXC and DBG males have good fertility parameters. The highest values for rectal temperature, skin temperature and breath rate were recorded for SMG. These findings revealed the presence of a wide range of morphological differences among studied goat breeds. Such diversity in the performance of goat breeds raised in Southwest China is crucial to implement reliable selection strategies for breeding goats in this area.

Ovarian response is not affected by the stage of seasonal anestrus or breed of goats when using a progesterone injection plus human chorionic gonadotropin-based protocol

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the stage of seasonal anestrus and breed on ovarian response in non-estrous cycling goats using a progesterone (P4) injection plus human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)-based protocol. In Experiment 1, non-estrous cycling local Mexican goats were treated with 20 mg of P4 plus 100 IU of hCG injections 24 h apart during April (early anestrus, n = 13) or June (late anestrus, n = 12). The estrous response, interval from hCG-to-estrus, and interval to ovulation were not affected by season (P > 0.05). In addition, the size of the follicle from which ovulation occurred and the size of the corpus luteum were not different between the two stages of seasonal anestrus (P > 0.05). In Experiment 2, the estrous response was compared between multiparous non-estrous cycling local Mexican (n = 18) and Alpine (n = 19) goats in which stage of the estrous cycle was synchronized using the same P4+hCG protocol as in Experiment 1. Neither the onset of estrus nor the time of ovulation differed between breeds, and the estrus-to-ovulation interval also was similar for both breeds (P > 0.05). The diameter of the dominant follicle at the time of ovulation was similar between local and Alpine goats (P > 0.05). In addition, the pregnancy rate was not different for both local and Alpine goats (P > 0.05). In conclusion, results of this study indicate that the stage of seasonal anestrus or breed do not modify estrous and ovarian response in non-estrous cyclic goats synchronized with a P4 injection plus hCG-based protocol.

2,4-Thiazolidinedione Treatment Improves the Innate Immune Response in Dairy Goats with Induced Subclinical Mastitis

Mastitis is a major disease in dairy cows resulting in significant economic losses. In vitro works suggest that ruminants peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) can aid in improving the response to mastitis and can control milk fat synthesis. The objectives of the present experiment were to test if treatment with the putative PPARγ agonist 2,4-thiazolidinedione (TZD) improves (1) the response to subclinical mastitis and (2) milk fat production. Lactating goats received daily injections of 8 mg/kg BW of TZD or saline for 3 weeks. After one week of TZD injection, half of the goats in each group received intramammary infusion of Strep. uberis or saline in both halves for a total of 4 groups (n = 6/group). TZD treatment did not affect milk fat but had positive effect on milk somatic cells count, blood nonesterified fatty acids, inflammatory markers, and liver function. TZD significantly increased myeloperoxidase but did not affect leukocytes phagocytosis or insulin. TZD increased adipocytes size and had minor effect on expression of PPARγ target genes in mammary epithelial cells but not in adipose tissue. Overall, TZD ameliorated the response to intramammary infection but the effect on milk fat synthesis and expression of related transcripts was less than expected.
