Effects of cadmium on female fertility parameters: an experimental study

Ferrocenyl-triazole complexes and their use in heavy metal cation sensing

Complexes tris((1-ferrocenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)amine (3), bis((1-ferrocenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)amine (6), bis((1-ferrocenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)ether (7), and 1-ferrocenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methanamine (9) were synthesized using the copper-catalyzed click reaction. Complexes 3, 6, 7, and 9 were characterized using NMR (1H and 13{1H}) and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry. Structures of 3, 7, and 9 in the solid state were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It was found that the triazole rings were planar and slightly twisted with respect to the cyclopentadienyl groups attached to them. Chains and 3D network structures were observed due to the presence of π⋯π and C-H⋯N interactions between the cyclopentadienyl and triazole ligands. A reversible redox behavior of the Fc groups between 239 and 257 mV with multicycle stability was characteristic for all the compounds, revealing that the electrochemically generated species Fc+ remained soluble in dichloromethane. Electrochemical sensor tests demonstrated the applicability of all the complexes to enhance the quantification sensing behavior of the screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) toward Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ ions.

Cadmium and immunologically-mediated homeostasis of anatomical barrier tissues

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that when absorbed into the body causes nephrotoxicity and effects in other tissues.Anatomical barrier tissues are tissues that prevent the entry of pathogens and include skin, mucus membranes and the immune system. The adverse effects of Cd-induced immune cell's activity are the most extensively studied in the kidneys and the liver. There are though fewer data relating the effect of this metal on the other tissues, particularly in those in which cells of the immune system form local circuits of tissue defense, maintaining immune-mediated homeostasis. In this work, data on the direct and indirect effects of Cd on anatomical barrier tissue of inner and outer body surfaces (the lungs, gut, reproductive organs, and skin) were summarized.

The potential reproductive toxicity of tannery effluent to the estrous cycle and ovarian follicular dynamics of female Swiss mice

Although the toxic effects of tannery effluent (TE) on tanning-industry workers have been reported in many studies, its effects on females' reproductive system are unknown. We aimed at evaluating the effects of direct contact with TE on the "emotional" status, estrous cycle (during 15 consecutive exposure days), and ovarian follicular dynamics of female Swiss mice at the end of the experiment to broaden the knowledge about the toxicity of this pollutant. The herein adopted exposure protocol simulated tanning-industry workers' exposure to TE. The test animals were subjected to 45 exposure days, for 1 h a day, 5 days a week (from Monday to Friday). Based on the collected data, female mice exposed to TE recorded high anxiety index in the elevated plus maze test, although we did not observe changes in their estrous cycle. The smaller total and specific number of ovarian follicles (types 1 to 6) and the higher frequency of degenerating follicles (atresic) in female mice exposed to TE marked the folliculogenesis reduction in them. Therefore, our study was the first to provide evidences that the exposure to TE can cause reproduction issues in female mice, as well as the first experimental insight about the impact of unhealthy work activities in tanning industries on women's reproductive system.
