Water Clustering in Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB): Evidenced by Diffusion and Sorption Experiments

Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) is a transparent amorphous polymer often used to protect fragile surfaces such as glass or photovoltaic panels. The polymer is then packaged in the form of adhesive sheets and bonded to the surfaces. The transport and retention of water in PVB are crucial properties to understand as they modulate the polymer's adhesion properties. In this work, we propose a detailed experimental study of water diffusion and sorption in PVB over a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels in the surrounding atmosphere. Using spectroscopic and gravimetric measurements, our study elucidates how the diffusion coefficient varies with temperature or vapor concentration and provides the activation energy for this process. In addition, dynamic vapor sorption experiments reveal (i) a strong dependence of sorption on hydroxyl group (-OH) concentration and (ii) that the solubility of vapor in PVB decreases with temperature. This enables us to trace the heat of the solution of water in PVB. A comparison of the thermodynamic data obtained with those for water in volume and with the engaged species induced clustering model supports the microscopic view of water organization in PVB in the form of clusters induced by hydrogen bonding.

An Integrated Characterization Strategy on Board for Recycling of poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) from Laminated Glass Wastes

Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) is widely used as an interlayer material in laminated glass applications, mainly in the automotive industry, but also for construction and photovoltaic applications. Post-consumed laminated glass is a waste that is mainly landfilled; nevertheless, it can be revalorized upon efficient separation and removal of adhered glass. PVB interlayers in laminated glass are always plasticized with a significant fraction in the 20-40% w/w range of plasticizer, and they are protected from the environment by two sheets of glass. In this work, the aim is to develop a thorough characterization strategy for PVB films. Neat reference PVB grades intended for interlayer use are compared with properly processed (delaminated) post-consumed PVB grades from the automotive and construction sectors. Methods are developed to open opportunities for recycling and reuse of the latter. The plasticizer content and chemical nature are determined by applying well-known analytical techniques, namely, FT-IR, TGA, NMR. The issue of potential aging during the life cycle of the original laminated material is also addressed through NMR. Based on the findings, a sensor capable of directly sorting PVB post-consumer materials will be developed and calibrated at a later stage.

Optimization of a polyvinyl butyral synthesis process based on response surface methodology and artificial neural network

High quality polyvinyl butyral (PVB) can be used as the intermediate film of automobile and building glass and the packaging film of photovoltaic cells. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize its synthesis process to obtain suitable products with a high acetalization degree (AD) and small particle size (d _p). In this work, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) was selected as the catalyst, and response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were utilized to optimize the synthesis process of PVB. The concentration of polyvinyl alcohol (A), the dosage of DES (B) and n-butanal (C), and the aging temperature (D) were selected as process variables, and the comprehensive score (AD, d _p and material and energy consumption) was introduced as the response. The results showed that single-factors B, C, D, and the interactions AB, BC and CD had significant effects on the comprehensive score, and the qualified PVB products (AD > 81%, d _p = 3-3.5 μm) were obtained under the optimal conditions obtained by RSM and ANN models. ANN is a better and more precise optimization tool than RSM. Also, DES played a dual role in catalysis and dispersion in the synthesis of PVB and showed good reusability, so it has great application potential in PVB industrial production.

Controllable Physical Synergized Triboelectricity, Shape Memory, Self-Healing, and Optical Sensing with Rollable Form Factor by Zn cluster

To build devices offering users comfortable experience, it is important to focus on form factor and multifunctionality. In this study, for the first time, multifunctional Zn clusters with shape memory, self-healing, triboelectricity, and optical sensing synergized with rollable form factor are designed and fabricated by coordinating COO^- and Zn²⁺ . As pore forming agent, Zn clusters produce hierarchical porous structure depending on Zn amount. Zn clusters are applied as message transmitters and charge containers in optical sensing and corona charge injection, respectively. Moreover, Zn clusters in PVB-COO-Zn serve as positive tribomaterial due to Zn ion doping effect, increasing the output performance as the Zn amount reaches 20 wt%. In addition, injecting positive charge into PVB-COO-Zn 20 lead to more than 24 times increase in output performance compared to those of non-porous structures. The reversibility of Zn clusters endows shape memory and self-healing, synergized with the rollable form factor. The rollability is implemented using the long alkyl chain and the energy absorption of porous structure, providing damage resistance. The advancements in this work provide opportunities for multifunctional and unique applications (shape memory rotating-triboelectric nanogenerator, rollable self-healing touchpad, hidden tag) synergized with rollability that accomplishes working in broadened condition in near future.

Structural analysis and dye removal behavior of amorphous titania embedded poly(vinyl butyral) hybrid fiber

This study reports on the efficient methylene blue (MB) dye removal properties of a polyvinyl butyral (PVB)-amorphous titania (amTiO₂) hybrid fiber (PVB-amTiO₂F) made by air-gap spinning in acetone solvent. The successful fabrication of PVB-amTiO₂F was confirmed by employing Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and energy dispersive X-ray measurement. Batch experiments were used to examine the cationic MB dye adsorption performance in the dark. The observed data showed that the developed PVB-amTiO₂F exhibited moderate adsorption efficiency (68-70%) which is comparable to other amorphous titania-rich adsorbents. The adsorption kinetics was well fitted with a pseudo-second-order model, suggesting that adsorption is mainly led by chemisorption. In addition, the MB degradation properties under visible light were also studied afterwards. A possible adsorption mechanism is discussed. Moreover, the as-fabricated fiber exhibited average to good reusability after 6 cycles. Only cationic MB dye solution was able to demonstrate such properties.

Optimum Extraction, Characterization, and Antioxidant Activities of Polysaccharides from Flowers of Dendrobium devonianum

Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the conditions for the ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) of polysaccharides from the flowers of Dendrobium devonianum. The optimal conditions for the maximum yields of DDFPs are as follows: an extraction temperature of 63.13°C, an extraction time of 53.10 min, and a water-to-raw material ratio of 22.11 mL/g. Furthermore, three fractions (DDFPs30, DDFPs50, and DDFPs70) were prepared from Dendrobium devonianum flowers polysaccharides (DDFPs) by the stepwise ethanol precipitation method. The DDFPs50 exhibited the highest antioxidant activity compared to the other fractions. The molecular weight, polydispersity, and conformation of these fractions were also characterized. In particular, the monosaccharide composition analysis of the DDFPs indicates that mannose and glucose are the primary components, similar to those of the D. officinale plant. This study provides a rapid extraction technology and essential information for the production of DDFPs, which could be potentially used as healthcare food.

Dynamics of poly(vinyl butyral) studied using dielectric spectroscopy and 1H NMR relaxometry

Dielectric Spectroscopy (DS) and ¹H Fast Field-Cycling (FFC) NMR relaxometry were applied for understanding the dynamic behavior of the amorphous ter-polymer poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) across the glass transition temperature (T_g = 70 °C by Differential Scanning Calorimetry). Above T_g, main chain segmental motions (α relaxation) were detected and characterized using both DS and FFC NMR relaxometry. The correlation times extracted by the analysis of DS and FFC NMR relaxometry data agreed within a factor of three and showed a Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann temperature dependence, with an associated T_g of 69 °C and a fragility of 155 for PVB glass. Below T_g, a secondary process (β relaxation) was revealed by DS, and was ascribed to reorientations of the vinyl alcohol dipoles due to local twisting motions with an associated activation barrier of 11 kcal mol^-1. The β process was also found to contribute to ¹H NMR relaxation above T_g.
