A Non-Modular Approach to Visual Space Perception

Environment width robustly influences egocentric distance judgments

Past work has suggested that perception of object distances in natural scenes depends on the environmental surroundings, even when the physical object distance remains constant. The cue bases for such effects remain unclear and are difficult to study systematically in real-world settings, given the challenges in manipulating large environmental features reliably and efficiently. Here, we used rendered scenes and crowdsourced data collection to address these challenges. In 4 experiments involving 452 participants, we investigated the effect of room width and depth on egocentric distance judgments. Targets were placed at distances of 2–37 meters in rendered rooms that varied in width (1.5–40 meters) and depth (6–40 meters). We found large and reliable effects of room width: Average judgments for the farthest targets in a 40-meter-wide room were between 16–33% larger than for the same target distances seen in a 1.5-meter-wide hallway. Egocentric distance cues and focal length were constant across room widths, highlighting the role of environmental context in judging distances in natural scenes. Obscuring the fine-grained ground texture, per se, is not primarily responsible for the width effect, nor does linear perspective play a strong role. However, distance judgments tended to decrease when doors and/or walls obscured more distant regions of the scene. We discuss how environmental features may be used to calibrate relative distance cues for egocentric distance judgments.

J. J. Gibson's "Ground Theory of Space Perception"

J. J. Gibson's ground theory of space perception is contrasted with Descartes' theory, which reduces all of space perception to the perception of distance and angular direction, relative to an abstract viewpoint. Instead, Gibson posits an embodied perceiver, grounded by gravity, in a stable layout of realistically textured, extended surfaces and more delimited objects supported by these surfaces. Gibson's concept of optical contact ties together this spatial layout, locating each surface relative to the others and specifying the position of each object by its location relative to its surface of support. His concept of surface texture-augmented by perspective structures such as the horizon-specifies the scale of objects and extents within this layout. And his concept of geographical slant provides surfaces with environment-centered orientations that remain stable as the perceiver moves around. Contact-specified locations on extended environmental surfaces may be the unattended primitives of the visual world, rather than egocentric or allocentric distances. The perception of such distances may best be understood using Gibson's concept of affordances. Distances may be perceived only as needed, bound through affordances to the particular actions that require them.

Stereoscopic depth constancy from a different direction

To calibrate stereoscopic depth from disparity our visual system must compensate for an object's egocentric location. Ideally, the perceived three-dimensional shape and size of objects in visual space should be invariant with their location such that rigid objects have a consistent identity and shape. These percepts should be accurate enough to support both perceptual judgments and visually-guided interaction. This theoretical note reviews the relationship of stereoscopic depth constancy to the geometry of stereoscopic space and seemingly esoteric concepts like the horopter. We argue that to encompass the full scope of stereoscopic depth constancy, researchers need to consider not just distance but also direction, that is 3D egocentric location in space. Judgements of surface orientation need to take into account the shape of the horopter and the computation of metric depth (when tasks depend on it) must compensate for direction as well as distance to calibrate disparities. We show that the concept of the horopter underlies these considerations and that the relationship between depth constancy and the horopter should be more explicit in the literature.
