Exploring patterns in older pedestrian involved crashes during nighttime

Nighttime crashes involving older pedestrians pose a significant safety concern due to their age-related vulnerabilities such as reduced vision and slower reaction times. This study analyzes crash data from Texas for six years (2017-2022) using Association Rules Mining (ARM) to identify patterns and associations affecting crash severity for older pedestrians aged 65-74 years and those over 74 years under varying lighting conditions. The findings reveal that high-speed limits and complex road environments significantly increase the risk of fatal or severe injuries for both age groups, particularly under inadequate lighting. Additionally, demographic factors, adverse weather conditions, and specific road features further influence crash outcomes. These insights highlight the need for interventions, including lower speed limits, enhanced street lighting, and the implementation of advanced technologies such as modern pedestrian detection systems, sensor technology, pedestrian bags, accessible pedestrian signals, to improve the safety of older pedestrians. Policymakers should leverage these insights to formulate strategies that improve road safety for older pedestrians, addressing their unique vulnerabilities in various nighttime conditions.

The efficacy of training to improve road safety in elderly pedestrians: A systematic review

Elderly pedestrians are involved in disproportionately more vehicle-pedestrian crashes than younger age groups. Training programs have been found to be effective in training children in pedestrian behaviours that improve their safety, however there is no consensus on whether older adults benefit from training. This systematic review aimed to identify whether training is effective for older adult pedestrians through analysis of training type, modalities, and the lasting effects of training. A systematic search of Medline, PsycINFO, and Scopus was conducted in March 2022 and updated in September 2023. Eight studies met the criteria all of which were high quality. Four distinct training types were found: physical (e.g., training physical strength or balance), behavioural (e.g., training specific pedestrian safety behaviours), cognitive (e.g., training reaction time and executive functioning), and educational (training knowledge about pedestrian safety behaviours). Physical training types were found to be most effective, followed by behavioural, cognitive, and educational respectively. Twelve pedestrian behaviours were measured across the eight studies. Reaction time was the most effectively trained outcome, followed by missed crossing opportunities. Errors of stimuli, median accepted time gap, initiation time and crossing were not effectively trained. The effects of training were maintained at follow-up for missed crossing opportunities only. There was preliminary evidence of potential efficacy of training for specific pedestrian safety behaviours, however, the long-term efficacy of training was not promising. Theory-driven research is needed to better understand why some behaviours are more trainable than others. More research is also needed to determine the real-world generalisability if training is to be recommended for older adult pedestrians.

Developmental differences across the lifespan in the use of perceptual information to guide action-based decisions

Perceptual information about unfolding events is important for guiding decisions about when and how to move in real-world action situations. As an exemplary case, road-crossing is a perceptual-motor task where age has been shown to be a strong predictor of risk due to errors in action-based decisions. The present study investigated age differences between three age groups (Children: 10-12 years old; Adults: 19-39 years old; Older Adults: 65 + year olds) in the use of perceptual information for selection, timing, and control of action when crossing a two-way street in an immersive, interactive virtual reality environment. Adults and children selected gaps to cross that were consistent with the use of a time-based information variable (tau), whereas older adults tuned less into the time-based variable (tau) to guide road-crossing decisions. For action initiation and control, children and adults also showed a strong ability to precisely time their entry with respect to the lead vehicle maximising the available time to cross and coordinating walking movements with the tail vehicle to ensure they were not on a collision course. In contrast, older adults delayed action initiation and showed difficulty coordinating self-movement with the approaching vehicle. This study and its results tie together age-based differences in the three components of action decision-making (selection, timing and control) within a unified framework based on perceptual information. The implications of these age-related differences in action decisions and crossing behaviours are discussed in the context of road safety.
