Abstract
AbstractWe report the use of carbon nanotubes as a material for the preparation of an electrochemical sensor that acts as a substrate for film metal electrodes used in stripping voltammetry. The sensor is based on a mixture of multiwall carbon nanotubes, glassy carbon spherical powder, and epoxy resin. The properly selected composition of the sensor made it possible to obtain a new substrate, competitive in relation to glassy carbon, for creating film metal electrodes. In this work, the proposed new sensor was used to determine the trace amounts of Ti(IV) on the lead film electrode. Measurements were carried out with in situ mode in an acetate buffer by adsorption stripping voltammetry with the use of cupferron as a complexing agent. Linear response to Ti(IV) ions in the concentration range of 7 × 10–10–7 × 10–8 mol L−1 and the limit of detection (LODs) 2.4 × 10–10 were obtained, respectively. These promising results revealed that a mixture of carbon nanotubes, epoxy resin, and spherical glassy carbon powder used for the determination of titanium ions on PbFE might represent an important addition to existing electrochemical sensor technologies. The proposed procedure was successfully used as a new and powerful analytical tool for determination of Ti(IV) in horsetail extracts.

Abstract
Nanomaterial-functionalized voltammetric microsensors are promising tools for detecting trace metals at low concentrations in the complex environment of natural seawater. However, the sensitivity reduction caused by the loss of modified nanomaterials in the detection process has always been a major problem. Herein, to fabricate a highly stable sensing platform, a microneedle electrode with a hierarchical porous tip was prepared through electrochemical etching technology to firmly embed nanoparticles. Using copper (Cu) as a model trace metal, a micro-cluster needle sensor based on a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-embedded tip-porous microneedle electrode (P-MNE) was fabricated for the direct voltammetric determination of labile Cu in natural seawater. The porous structure of P-MNE not only provided a larger specific surface area and active sites for AuNPs which had excellent electrocatalytic performance for Cu2+ determination, but also protected from their loss during the detection process in seawater. Therefore, this novel micro-cluster needle sensor exhibited significantly improved stability with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.5% for 30 detections. The linear range of Cu2+ on this micro-cluster needle sensor was from 0.1 to 1000 nM with a detection limit of 0.03 nM. More importantly, this micro-cluster needle sensor was successfully used for directly detecting labile Cu in natural seawater samples without any preaccumulation treatment or reagent addition to obtain the contribution proportions of the labile fraction in total dissolved Cu. Furthermore, this sensing platform might also be extended to the reliable determination of other labile metals in seawater by changing the functional nanoparticles embedded in the nanopores.

Abstract
Blocking electrochemistry, a subfield of nanochemistry, enables nondestructive, in situ measurement of the concentration, size, and size heterogeneity of highly dilute, nanometer-scale materials. This approach, in which the adsorptive impact of individual particles on a microelectrode prevents charge exchange with a freely diffusing electroactive redox mediator, has expanded the scope of electrochemistry to the study of redox-inert materials. A limitation, however, remains: inhomogeneous current fluxes associated with enhanced mass transfer occurring at the edges of planar microelectrodes confound the relationship between the size of the impacting particle and the signal it generates. These "edge effects" lead to the overestimation of size heterogeneity and, thus, poor sample characterization. In response, we demonstrate here the ability of catalytic current amplification (EC') to reduce this problem, an effect we term "electrocatalytic interruption". Specifically, we show that the increase in mass transport produced by a coupled chemical reaction significantly mitigates edge effects, returning estimated particle size distributions much closer to those observed using ex situ electron microscopy. In parallel, electrocatalytic interruption enhances the signal observed from individual particles, enabling the detection of particles significantly smaller than is possible via conventional blocking electrochemistry. Finite element simulations indicate that the rapid chemical kinetics created by this approach contributes to the amplification of the electronic signal to restore analytical precision and reliably detect and characterize the heterogeneity of nanoscale electro-inactive materials.

Abstract
Abstract
In this study, the electrochemical behavior of sulpiride (SUL) was examined deeply by using pyrolytic graphite electrode modified with graphene oxide (GO) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The developed nanosensor indicated considerable impact by significantly increasing the signal of SUL compared with the bare electrode. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and square wave voltammetry (SWV) methods were utilized to investigate the SUL electrochemical analysis in aqueous solutions. Under optimum experimental conditions, calibration plot for SUL with a limit of detection of 2.83 × 10−9 M was obtained at accumulation time of the 30 s using square wave adsorptive stripping voltammetric technique (AdSSWV) in the range of 1.0 × 10−7 to 5.0 × 10−5 M. The effects of accumulation potential, accumulation time, pH, scan rate, electrolyte, and interfering agents were studied to obtain the intensive peak signal of the analyte. The presented method is validated and successfully performed for the determination of the SUL tablet and capsule. The fabricated nanosensor was carried out for the detection of SUL in the urine. Excellent recoveries among 104.37, 103.82, and 101.95% were obtained for tablet and capsule forms and urine analysis.

Abstract
This article presents the development of a highly sensitive electrochemical heavy metal sensor based on hierarchical porous carbon electrodes with sponge-like edge structures. Micrometer-scale hierarchical nanoporous carbon electrodes were fabricated at a wafer-scale using cost-effective batch microfabrication technologies, including the carbon microelectromechanical systems technology and oxygen plasma etching. The sponge-like hierarchical porous structure and sub-micrometer edges of the nanoporous carbon electrodes facilitate fast electron transfer rate and large active sites, leading to the efficient formation of dense heavy metal alloy particles of small sizes during the preconcentration step. This enhanced the peak current response during the square wave anodic stripping voltammetry, enabling the detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) at concentrations as low as 0.41 and 0.7 μg L−1, respectively, with high sensitivity per unit sensing area (Cd: 109.45 nA μg−1 L mm−2, Pb: 100.37 nA μg−1 L mm−2).

Abstract
There is an increasing demand for fast and sensitive determination of antidepressants in human body fluids because of the present scenario of rising depression cases at the global level. A simple and sensitive voltammetric method using edge plane pyrolytic graphite electrode (EPPGE) as a novel sensor is presented for the determination of antidepressant fluvoxamine in urine and blood plasma samples of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients. EPPGE is delineated the first time for this determination. EPPGE exhibited strong electrocatalytic activity and enhanced reduction signal towards the sensing of fluvoxamine. Fluvoxamine gave a well-defined reduction peak at ~ - 670 mV using EPPGE. The fluvoxamine reduction peak current was linear to its concentration in the range 5.00 × 10-9 - 0.1 × 10-6 mol L-1 and the limit of detection was found to be 3.5 × 10-9 mol L-1. The pre-eminence of EPPGE over mercury electrodes has been proved in terms of sensitivity and imperative analytical parameters. The pH study reveals the involvement of an equal number of electrons and protons in the reduction reaction mechanism. The frequency study indicated the adsorption controlled irreversible reaction mechanism. The stability and reproducibility of the offered sensor were also found most favorable. The interference study confirmed the optimum selectivity of the proposed sensor. The edge plane pyrolytic graphite sensing platform is recommended as a potential contender for the accurate and fast determination of fluvoxamine in depression medications as well as biological specimens of OCD patients.

Abstract
The usage of boron-doped diamond (BDD) material has found to be very attractive in modern electroanalytical methods and received massive consideration as perspective electrochemical sensor due to its outstanding (electro)chemical properties. These generally known facilities include large potential window, low background currents, ability to withstand extreme potentials and strong tendency to resist fouling compared to conventional carbon-based electrodes. As evidence of superiority of this material, couple of reviews describing the overview of various applications of BDD electrodes in the field of analytical and material chemistry has been reported in scientific literature during last decade. However, herein proposed review predominantly focuses on the most recent developments (from 2009 to 2020) dealing with the application of BDD as an advanced and environmental-friendly sensor platform in food analysis. The main method characteristics of analysis of various organic food components with different chemical properties, including additives, flavor and aroma components, phenolic compounds, flavonoids and pesticides in food matrices are described in more details. The importance of BDD surface termination, presence of sp2 content and boron doping level on electrochemical sensing is discussed. Apart from this, a special attention is paid to the evaluation of main analytical characteristics of the BDD electrochemical sensor in single- and multi-analyte detection mode in food analysis. The recent achievements in the utilizing of BDD electrodes in amperometric detection coupled to flow injection analysis, batch injection analysis, and high-performance liquid chromatography are also commented. Moreover, actual trends in sample preparation techniques prior to electrochemical sensing in food analysis are referred.

Abstract
Paper-based carbon working electrodes were modified with mercury or bismuth films for the determination of trace metals in aqueous solutions. Both modification procedures were optimized in terms of selectivity and sensitivity for the determination of different heavy metals, aiming their simultaneous determination. Cd (II), Pb (II) and In (III) could be quantified with both films. However, Cu (II) could not be determined with bismuth films. The modification with mercury films led to the most sensitive method, with linear ranges between 0.1 and 10 µg/mL and limits of detection of 0.4, 0.1, 0.04 and 0.2 µg/mL for Cd (II), Pb (II), In (III) and Cu (II), respectively. Nevertheless, the bismuth film was a more sustainable alternative to mercury. Tap-water samples were analyzed for the determination of metals by standard addition methodology with good accuracy, by using a low-cost and easily disposable paper-based electrochemical platform. This system demonstrated its usefulness for monitoring heavy metals in water.

Abstract
Different species of trace heavy metals (HMs) in seawater samples were simultaneously analyzed by anodic stripping voltammetric method, an analytical technique that does not require sample pre-concentration or the addition of reagents. The effects of the crucial parameters, deposition potential and time, on the determination of HMs were investigated. Concentrations of the total dissolved, dissolved active, and dissolved inert HMs were obtained through different analysis processes. The three species of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn in seawater samples collected in different locations across Sishili Bay, North Yellow Sea, China were studied. The relative concentration of the dissolved active Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn in the total dissolved concentrations is 59.0%, 69.6%, 87.3% and 84.1%, respectively. The concentrations of different HMs species in Sishili Bay could be affected by the discharged effluent, sea current, and uptake of marine organism.

Abstract
An ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor based on polydopamine/carboxylic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs−COOH) nanocomposites modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was presented in this work, which has been developed for highly selective and highly sensitive determination of an antimicrobial drug, metronidazole. The preparation of polydopamine/MWCNTs–COOH nanocomposites/GCE sensor is simple and possesses high reproducible, where polydopamine can be coated on the surface of MWCNTs–COOH via a simple electropolymerization process. Under optimized conditions, the proposed sensor showed ultrasensitive determination for metronidazole with a wide linear detection range from 5 to 5000 µmol/dm3 and a low detection limit of 0.25 µmol/dm3 (S/N = 3). Moreover, the proposed sensor has been successfully applied for the quantitative determination of metronidazole in real drug samples. This work may provide a novel and effective analytical platform for determination of metronidazole in application of real pharmaceutical and biological samples analysis.

Abstract
Genotoxic nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) are formed during incomplete combustion processes by reaction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with atmospheric nitrogen oxides. 1-Nitropyrene, 2-nitrofluorene, and 3-nitrofluoranthene as the dominating substances are used as markers of NPAHs formation by these processes. In the presented study, voltammetric properties and quantification of these compounds and of 5-nitroquinoline (as a representative of environmentally important genotoxic heterocyclic compounds) have been investigated using a mercury meniscus modified silver solid amalgam electrode (m-AgSAE), which represent a nontoxic alternative to traditional mercury electrodes. Linear calibration curves over three orders of magnitude and limits of determination mostly in the 10(-7) mol L(-1) concentration range were obtained using direct current and differential pulse voltammetry. Further, satisfactory HPLC separation of studied analytes in fifteen minutes was achieved using 0.01 mol L(-1) phosphate buffer, pH 7.0 : methanol (15 : 85, v/v) mobile phase, and C(18) reversed stationary phase. Limits of detection of around 1 · 10(-5) mol L(-1) were achieved using amperometric detection at m-AgSAE in wall-jet arrangement for all studied analytes. Practical applicability of this technique was demonstrated on the determination of 1-nitropyrene, 2-nitrofluorene, 3-nitrofluoranthene, and 5-nitroquinoline in drinking water after their preliminary separation and preconcentration using solid phase extraction with the limits of detection around 1 · 10(-6) mol L(-1).
