A Review on Recent Applications of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography in Metal Determination and Speciation Analysis

Precision in wheat flour classification: Harnessing the power of deep learning and two-dimensional correlation spectrum (2DCOS)

Wheat flour is a ubiquitous food ingredient, yet discerning its various types can prove challenging. A practical approach for identifying wheat flour types involves analyzing one-dimensional near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) data. This paper introduces an innovative method for wheat flour recognition, combining deep learning (DL) with Two-dimensional correlation spectrum (2DCOS). In this investigation, 316 samples from four distinct types of wheat flour were collected using a near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer, and the raw spectra of each sample underwent preprocessing employing diverse methods. The discrete generalized 2DCOS algorithm was applied to generate 3792 2DCOS images from the preprocessed spectral data. We trained a deep learning model tailored for flour 2DCOS images - EfficientNet. Ultimately, this DL model achieved 100% accuracy in identifying wheat flour within the test set. The findings demonstrate the viability of directly transforming spectra into two-dimensional images for species recognition using 2DCOS and DL. Compared to the traditional stoichiometric method Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS_DA), machine learning methods Support Vector Machines (SVM) and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and deep learning methods one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1DCNN) and residual neural network (ResNet), the model proposed in this paper is better suited for wheat flour identification, boasting the highest accuracy. This study offers a fresh perspective on wheat flour type identification and successfully integrates the latest advancements in deep learning with 2DCOS for spectral type identification. Furthermore, this approach can be extended to the spectral identification of other products, presenting a novel avenue for future research in the field.

Ferroptosis in health and disease

Ferroptosis is a pervasive non-apoptotic form of cell death highly relevant in various degenerative diseases and malignancies. The hallmark of ferroptosis is uncontrolled and overwhelming peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids contained in membrane phospholipids, which eventually leads to rupture of the plasma membrane. Ferroptosis is unique in that it is essentially a spontaneous, uncatalyzed chemical process based on perturbed iron and redox homeostasis contributing to the cell death process, but that it is nonetheless modulated by many metabolic nodes that impinge on the cells' susceptibility to ferroptosis. Among the various nodes affecting ferroptosis sensitivity, several have emerged as promising candidates for pharmacological intervention, rendering ferroptosis-related proteins attractive targets for the treatment of numerous currently incurable diseases. Herein, the current members of a Germany-wide research consortium focusing on ferroptosis research, as well as key external experts in ferroptosis who have made seminal contributions to this rapidly growing and exciting field of research, have gathered to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review on ferroptosis. Specific topics include: basic mechanisms, in vivo relevance, specialized methodologies, chemical and pharmacological tools, and the potential contribution of ferroptosis to disease etiopathology and progression. We hope that this article will not only provide established scientists and newcomers to the field with an overview of the multiple facets of ferroptosis, but also encourage additional efforts to characterize further molecular pathways modulating ferroptosis, with the ultimate goal to develop novel pharmacotherapies to tackle the various diseases associated with - or caused by - ferroptosis.

A dual-responsive RhB-doped MOF probe for simultaneous recognition of Cu2+ and Fe3

Based on the dual response of RhB@UiO-67 (1:6) to Cu2+ and Fe3+, a proportional fluorescent probe with (I392/I581) as the output signal was developed to recognize Cu2+ and Fe3+. Developing highly sensitive and selective trace metal ions probes is crucial to human health and ecological sustainability. In this work, a series of ratio fluorescent probes (RhB@UiO-67) were successfully synthesized using a one-pot method to enable fluorescence sensing of Cu2+ and Fe3+ at low concentrations. The proportional fluorescent probe RhB@UiO-67 (1:6) exhibited simultaneous quenching of Cu2+ and Fe3+, which was found to be of interest. Furthermore, the limits of detection (LODs) for Cu2+ and Fe3+ were determined to be 2.76 μM and 0.76 μM, respectively, for RhB@UiO-67 (1:6). These values were significantly superior to those reported for previous sensors, indicating the probe's effectiveness in detecting Cu2+ and Fe3+ in an ethanol medium. Additionally, RhB@UiO-67 (1:6) demonstrated exceptional immunity and reproducibility towards Cu2+ and Fe3+. The observed fluorescence quenching of Cu2+ and Fe3+ was primarily attributed to the mechanisms of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), photoinduced electron transfer (PET), and competitive absorption (CA). This work establishes a valuable foundation for the future study and utilization of Cu2+ and Fe3+ sensing technologies.

Polymeric Materials in Speciation Analysis Based on Solid-Phase Extraction

Speciation analysis is a relevant topic since the (eco)toxicity, bioavailability, bio (geo)chemical cycles, and mobility of a given element depend on its chemical forms (oxidation state, organic ligands, etc.). The reliability of analytical results for chemical species of elements depends mostly on the maintaining of their stability during the sample pretreatment step and on the selectivity of further separation step. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a matter of choice as the most suitable and widely used procedure for both enrichment of chemical species of elements and their separation. The features of sorbent material are of great importance to ensure extraction efficiency from one side and selectivity from the other side of the SPE procedure. This review presents an update on the application of polymeric materials in solid-phase extraction used in nonchromatographic methods for speciation analysis.

Combined atomic and molecular (CAM) ionization with the liquid sampling-atmospheric pressure glow discharge microplasma

In a world where information-rich methods of analysis are often sought over those with superior figures of merit, there is a constant search for ionization methods which can be applied across diverse analytical systems. The liquid sampling-atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) is a microplasma device which has the inherent capabilities to operate as a combined atomic and molecular (CAM) ionization source. The plasma is sustained by placement of a high voltage (~500 V, dc) onto an electrolytic solution through which the analyte is generally delivered to the discharge. Judicious choice of the solvent provides a means of obtaining atomic/elemental and/or molecular mass spectra. Presented here are the diverse modes of sample introduction and mass spectrometer platforms to which the LS-APGD has been interfaced. Likewise, representative spectra and figures of merit are presented towards elemental and isotope ratio measurements, as well as application to small organic molecules, organometallic complexes, and intact proteins. It is believed that the diversity of analytical applications and ready implementation across the entirety of mass spectrometry platforms portends a level of versatility not realized with other ionization sources.

Speciation analysis of manganese against the background of its different content in the blood serum of dairy cows

Studies in the field of microelement speciation in the body of farm animals, in particular dairy cattle, are almost completely absent. The average concentration of Mn in the blood serum of all the studied animals (n = 80) was 2.5 μg/L, which corresponds to normal values. Of the total number of animals, 21% were the cows with the low normal values (serum Mn concentration ≤ 2 µg/L, i.e. less than Q25 of the total sample) and 25% were the animals with the high normal values (serum Mn concentration ≥ 2.72 µg/L, i.e. more than Q75 of the total sample). The data obtained in the course of the study indicate that the change in the Mn level, even in the range of normal values, is accompanied by the redistribution of this element over various protein fractions. The six found Mn blood serum forms are presumably represented by α2-macroglobulin (tetramer, dimer, and monomer), transferrin/albumine, manganese citrates, and "free" metal ions. The analyzed fractions of Mn found in the blood serum of cows had the following hierarchy of concentrations: in the group with low-normal values of Mn ("free" Mn >> tetrameric form of α2-macroglobulin >> transferrin/albumine >> dimeric form of α2-macroglobulin >> monomeric form of α2-macroglobulin >> citrate), in the group with high normal manganese values ("free" Mn >> monomeric form of α2-macroglobulin >> transferring/albumine >> citrate >> tetrameric form of α2-macroglobulin >> dimeric form of α2-macroglobulin). In the group with high normal Mn values relative to the group with low normal values, there was a percentage decrease in the tetrameric fraction of a2-macroglobulin from 17.2 to 4.4%, dimeric fraction of a2-macroglobulin from 6.9 to 2.2%, "free" Mn from 54.3 to 44.4% and an increase in monomeric fraction of a2-macroglobulin from 6.7 to 23.1%, transferrin/albumine from 10.1 to 17.7%, citrate from 4.8 to 8.2%. Our data demonstrate the features of Mn redistribution of dairy cows, which can be used for an extended assessment of the microelement status of animals.

Preparation of spherical silica hydroxyl-functionalized covalent organic polymer composites for mixed-mode liquid chromatography

Covalent organic polymers are an emerging class of amorphous microporous materials that have raised increasing concerns in analytical chemistry due to their unique structural and surface chemical properties. However, the application of covalent organic polymers as mixed-mode stationary phases in chromatographic separations has rarely been reported. Herein, novel spherical silica hydroxyl-functionalized covalent organic polymer composites were successfully prepared via a layer-by-layer approach. The structure and morphology of the materials were carefully characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and contact angle measurements. Baseline separations of various alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and nucleosides and bases were achieved on the prepared stationary phase under reversed-phase/hydrophilic interaction mode. The column efficiencies of 23 853 and 36 580 plates/m were obtained for butylbenzene and uracil, respectively, and the relative standard deviation of the retention time for continuous injections was less than 1.38% (n = 10), suggesting satisfactory column efficiency and repeatability. Additionally, this novel stationary phase realized the complete separation of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals in river water. This work affords a new route for synthesizing covalent organic polymers-based mixed-mode stationary phase and further reveals their great potential in chromatographic separation.

[Magnetic ion imprinting techniques for the separation and analysis of elemental speciation]

Metal and metalloid elements have various possible isotopic compositions and oxidation states and often form coordination or covalent compounds with inorganic and organic small molecules or biological macromolecules, resulting in complex elemental speciation. Different species of the same element often have different properties, which dictate their behavior. Thus, elemental speciation analysis is vital for comprehensively and accurately assessing an element's environmental and biological effects and the corresponding risks. Because elemental speciation determines the behavior of an element in different environmental and biological processes, the analysis of elemental species has, in recent years, been important in various subjects, including analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, geochemistry, ecology, agronomy, and biomedicine. The complexity of environmental and biological sample matrices, as well as the multiformity, low levels, and lability of chemical forms pose severe challenges in elemental speciation analysis. Therefore, the highly selective identification and efficient separation of native species is necessary for conducting the identification, quantification, ecotoxicity evaluation, and physiological function study of elemental speciation. Sample pretreatment by solid-phase extraction is an effective solution to the aforementioned problems, but the existing methods do not meet the requirements of current research. The transition of the target species from pre-processing to the detection device includes both on- and off-line arrangements. Compared with the on-line approach, the off-line approach requires more manual participation, increasing the analysis workload. However, the off-line approach can improve the analysis efficiency through high-throughput pretreatment when large batches of samples are encountered, meaning the off-line approach is still an effective model. Ion imprinting technology has been developed based on existing molecular imprinting technology, with four main steps present in the synthesis of ion imprinted polymers. First, ion imprinting technology uses metal ions as templates. Then, these templates are combined with the functional monomers through coordination, electrostatic or hydrogen bonding. The functional monomers simultaneously surround and fix the templates, after which the cross-linkers and functional monomers polymerize to prepare ion-imprinted polymers with a specific structure and composition. Finally, the imprinted holes are created in the polymers by eluting the template ions. Therefore, the template molecules, functional monomers, and cross-linkers are three precursors necessary for synthesizing ion-imprinted polymers. These polymers can specifically bind to the imprinted metal ions with accuracy, sensitivity, and reliability. In recent years, they have been widely used in separating, enriching, analyzing, and detecting elemental species. During solid-phase extraction, the non-magnetic adsorbent materials dispersed in the sample solution need to be separated by centrifugation or filtration, which is time-consuming and laborious. Because an external magnetic field can be used for rapid magnetic solid-phase extraction, it has become a potential method for separating and enriching elemental species. This review systematically summarizes the latest progress in ion-imprinting technology, including its principle and the preparation methods of ion-imprinted polymers. The challenges faced by ion imprinting technology are analyzed in the context of the development of ion-imprinting magnetic solid-phase extraction in elemental speciation analysis. Finally, the direction of future development and the strategies of ion imprinting technology in elemental speciation analysis are proposed. It is important to exploit novel organic-inorganic hybrid polymerization-based multifunctional ion-imprinted magnetic nanocomposites for the magnetic solid-phase extraction and separation of elemental species. By establishing the pretreatment protocols with high recognition selectivity, strong separation ability, large adsorption capacity, and good speciation stability, we expect to achieve the research objectives of simultaneously separating and enriching the multiple-species of typical metal/metalloid elements in environmental and biological samples.

Mediator Microbial Biosensor Analyzers for Rapid Determination of Surface Water Toxicity

Microbial mediator biosensors for surface water toxicity determination make it possible to carry out an early assessment of the environmental object’s quality without time-consuming standard procedures based on standard test-organisms, and provide broad opportunities for receptor element modifying depending on the required operational parameters analyzer. Four microorganisms with broad substrate specificity and nine electron acceptors were used to form a receptor system for toxicity assessment. Ferrocene was the most effective mediator according to its high rate constant of interaction with the microorganisms (0.33 ± 0.01 dm3/(g × s) for yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Biosensors were tested on samples containing four heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cd2+), two phenols (phenol and p-nitrophenol), and three natural water samples. The «ferrocene- Escherichia coli» and «ferrocene-Paracoccus yeei, E. coli association» systems showed good operational stability with a relative standard deviation of 6.9 and 7.3% (14 measurements) and a reproducibility of 7 and 5.2% using copper (II) ions as a reference toxicant. Biosensor analysis with these systems was shown to highly correlate with the results of the standard method using Chlorella algae as a test object. Developed biosensors allow for a valuation of the polluted natural water’s impact on the ecosystem via an assessment of the influence on bacteria and yeast in the receptor system. The systems could be used in toxicological monitoring of natural waters.

Dendritic organic molecular gel coating with molecular shape selectivity and its application in selective separation by liquid chromatography

Dendritic organic molecular gels are a promising class of three-dimensional network compounds. Here, we have synthesized a new type of dendritic organic molecular gel stationary phase (SiO₂-G3) by using benzyl alcohol as raw material and dimethyl 5-hydroxyisophthalate as growth unit to synthesize a third-generation organic molecular gel G3, which grafted onto the silica surface by cyanogen chloride (CC). The developed stationary phase not only exhibits high molecular shape selectivity but also has a RPLC/HILIC/IEC mixed-mode characteristic for HPLC due to the ordered structure, the multiple strong π-π stacking interactions and the introduction of a hydrophilic triazine fraction during the grafting process. Compared with a commercial C₁₈ column, the developed column exhibited flexible selectivity, enhanced separation performance and excellent separation of monosubstituted benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), positional isomers, nucleosides and nucleobases, benzoic acid and aniline compounds. In addition, the new column provided baseline separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants in Yellow River water, verifying its potential for application in the analysis of real samples.

Measuring heavy metal ions in water using nature existed microalgae as medium based on terahertz technology

Heavy metal pollution in water seriously affects human health. The disadvantages of traditional metal ion detection methods involve long and cumbersome chemical pretreatment in the early stage, and large volume of samples. In this study, microalgae were used as the medium, and terahertz spectroscopy technology was employed to collect the changes of material components in it, so as to deduce the types and concentrations of heavy metal pollution in water. Through the partial least square(PLS), we establish the prediction model of heavy metal concentration, and the results show that the best detection time for Pb²⁺ is 6 h and Ni²⁺ is 18 h. The principal component analysis(PCA) shows that β-carotene is the most affected substance. Afterward we collect five real surface waters in East China and verify that the judgment accuracy of Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺ are 100% and 93.2% respectively. The results indicate that the time is shorter than the traditional pretreatment time from more than 20-6 h, the sample volume is reduced from 50 mL to 10 mL, the detection accuracy is improved from 10 ng/mL to 1 ng/mL. In a word, we provide a new fast and real-time method for biological monitoring of heavy metal pollution in water.

Fe3O4–SiO2–graphene oxide–amino acid ionic liquid magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry for speciation of Cr(iii) and Cr(vi) in environmental water

This developed method, based on the combination of functionalized Fe3O4–SiO2–GO–AAIL and ICP-OES, is capable of remarkable selectivity towards Cr(iii).

Facile fabrication of silica@covalent organic polymers core-shell composites as the mixed-mode stationary phase for hydrophilic interaction/reversed-phase/ion-exchange chromatography

Covalent organic polymers (COPs) are a promising class of cross-linked polymeric networks that attracted extensive attention in separation and analysis fields. Exploring facile and convenient strategy to prepare COPs-based mixed-mode stationary phases for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has seriously lagged and has never been reported. Herein, we describe a facile in-situ grow strategy for fabrication of silica@COPs core-shell composites (SiO₂@TpBD-(OH)₂) as a novel mixed-mode stationary phase for HPLC. Owing to the co-existing of abundant hydroxyl, carbonyl, imine, cyclohexyl groups, and benzene rings in the skeleton of COPs shell, the developed mixed-mode stationary phase exhibits hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC)/reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC)/ion-exchange chromatography (IEX) retention mechanisms. The content of acetonitrile, pH value, and salt concentration in the mobile phase were investigated on SiO₂@TpBD-(OH)₂ packed column. In comparison to conventional single-mode columns, the SiO₂@TpBD-(OH)₂ column showed flexible selectivity, enhanced separation performance, and superior resolution for benzene homologues, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nucleosides and bases, and acidic organic compounds. The column efficiency of p-nitrobenzoic acid was up to 54440 plates per meter. The packed column also possessed outstanding chromatographic repeatability for six nucleosides and bases with the RSDs of 0.07-0.23%, 0.58-1.77%, and 0.31-1.23% for retention time, peak area, and peak height, respectively. Besides, the SiO₂@TpBD-(OH)₂ column offered baseline separation of multiple organic pollutants in lake water, which verified its great potential in real sample analysis. Overall, the silica@COPs core-shell composites not only provide a new candidate of mixed-mode stationary phases, but also extend the potential application of COPs in separation science.

Methoxy terminated poly dimethylsiloxane bonded stationary phase for reversed-phase liquid chromatography

In this work, a methoxy terminated poly dimethylsiloxane modified silica gel material was proposed as a novel stationary phase for reversed-phase liquid chromatography. With 5 μm silica gel as matrix, methoxy terminated poly dimethylsiloxane polymer was grafted by one step chemical bonding reaction. The obtained stationary phase was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and element analysis. To our knowledge, this is the novel methoxy terminated poly dimethylsiloxane bonded stationary phase with good separation efficiency (42107-46988 plates/m for benzene homologues) and high stability (RSD is 0.08-5.09%). Comparing to other traditional columns of the same type, the proposed stationary phase has a wider polarity separation scale and shorter analysis time. In addition to the rapid separation of hydrophobic compound, such column also exhibited great potential in the separation of hydrophilic analytes.

One-minute highly selective Cr(VI) determination at ultra-trace levels: An ICP-MS method based on the on-line trapping of Cr(III)

An analytical method derived from the coupling of frontal chromatography (FC) with Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is proposed for the fast determination of Cr(VI) ultra-traces. The insertion of a short, homemade column filled with a strong cationic exchange resin in the flow-path of a commercial ICP-MS allows on-line trapping of cationic Cr(III) and elution of anionic Cr(VI). As a result, only the Cr(VI) front reaches the detector. This separation mechanism enables the highly selective quantification of Cr(VI) ultra-traces (LOD = 0.026 µg/kg - defined as 3 s of 10 replicated measurements of a 0.050 µg/kg solution) over a wide linearity range (tested up to 1024 µg/kg), even in the presence of Cr(III) concentration as high as 50 mg/kg. Key advantages of the proposed method are the extremely short analysis time (one minute), together with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of the modifications applied over a commercial ICP-MS instrumental configuration. No time- or chemical-consuming pretreatments are needed: it is only necessary to acidify the sample prior Cr(VI) determination, as normally performed for common ICP-MS analysis. The applicability of the method was demonstrated over mineral water samples and toy migration solutions.

Protein glycosylation in extracellular vesicles: Structural characterization and biological functions

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are lipid bilayer-enclosed particles involved in intercellular communication, delivery of biomolecules from donor to recipient cells, cellular disposal and homeostasis, potential biomarkers and drug carriers. The content of EVs includes DNA, lipids, metabolites, proteins, and microRNA, which have been studied in various diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, pregnancy, neurodegenerative, and cardiovascular disorders. EVs are enriched in glycoconjugates and exhibit specific glycosignatures. Protein glycosylation is a co- and post-translational modification (PTM) that plays an important role in the expression and function of exosomal proteins. N- and O-linked protein glycosylation has been mapped in exosomal proteins. The purpose of this review is to highlight the importance of glycosylation in EVs proteins. Initially, we describe the main PTMs in EVs with a focus on glycosylation. Then, we explore glycan-binding proteins describing the main findings of studies that investigated the glycosylation of EVs in cancer, pregnancy, infectious diseases, diabetes, mental disorders, and animal fluids. We have highlighted studies that have developed innovative methods for studying the content of EVs. In addition, we present works related to lipid glycosylation. We explored the content of studies deposited in public databases, such as Exocarta and Vesiclepedia. Finally, we discuss analytical methods for structural characterization of glycoconjugates and present an overview of the critical points of the study of glycosylation EVs, as well as perspectives in this field.

Arsenic speciation in rice samples for trace level determination by high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry

Six arsenic species, namely arsenite (AsIII), arsenate (AsV), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), arsenobetaine (AsB) and arsenocholine (AsC) were speciated using a combination of high-performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS). Under optimum chromatographic conditions, six arsenic species were well separated, and the performance of the combined system (HPLC-ICP-MS) for the species was determined. The limits of detection were calculated in the range of 0.14-0.29 ng/mL, and the corresponding quantification limits ranged between 0.45 and 0.97 ng mL^-1 for the species. Spike recovery experiments performed on rice samples were used to validate the method's applicability to complex matrices. The recovery results calculated ranged between 93 and 109%, validating the method's applicability. Triplicate measurements for all spiked samples recorded percent relative standard deviation values below 10%.

Speciation Analysis of Chromium in Chromium-Enriched Yeast by Ion Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Chromium-enriched yeast (CrY) is a popular Cr dietary supplement, but suitable speciation analysis of highly toxic Cr(VI) in CrY is not available. Ion chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method was firstly developed and validated for the quantification of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Ultrasound-assisted weakly alkaline EDTA solution combined with boiling was used to extract two Cr species in CrY. Two species were separated on two successive anion-exchange columns using a mobile phase of 0.6 mmol/L EDTA and 76 mmol/L NH₄NO₃ solution. The method was sensitive, accurate (92.4-100.9%), and precise (0.8-3.1%). Species of Cr(VI) were not found in CrY.

One minute synthesis of green fluorescent copper nanocluster: The preparation of smartphone aided paper-based kit for on-site monitoring of nanomolar level mercury and sulfide ions in environmental samples

We wish to report, a minute synthesis of green fluorescent copper nanocluster by simple sonication. 1-Thio-β-d-glucose was used as a capping ligand to synthesis copper nanocluster (TG-CuNCs). The TG-CuNCs exhibit the emission maximum at 430 nm. The synthesized TG-CuNCs was well characterized by UV-vis, fluorescent, XRD, HR-TEM and FT-IR techniques. After the addition of Hg²⁺ or S^2- into TG-CuNCs, the fluorescence was quenched. Based on the quenching of fluorescence, we have calculated the detection limit 1.7 nM and 1.02 nM for Hg²⁺ and S^2-, respectively. Finally, we have applied TG-CuNCs for the detection of Hg²⁺ and S^2- in tap, river, pond water. Importantly, the smartphone aided paper-based kit was developed for on-site monitoring of Hg²⁺ and S^2- ions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report for the one-minute synthesis of TG-CuNCs and the preparation of smartphone aided paper-based kit for on-site monitoring of Hg²⁺ and S^2- ions. Further, it is anticipated that this synthesis of TG-CuNCs and smartphone aided paper-based kit for Hg²⁺ and S^2- will be useful materials in the filled with the biosensor, material science and nanotechnology.

Ionic imprinted polymer solid-phase extraction for inorganic arsenic selective pre-concentration in fishery products before high-performance liquid chromatography - inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry speciation

Low levels of inorganic arsenic [As(III) and As(V)] in fishery products have been selectively isolated from fish extracts (1.0 g of wet fish samples pre-treated with 10 mL of 1:1 methanol/water under sonication at 25 °C for 30 min) by ionic imprinted polymer (IIPs) based solid phase extraction procedure (on-column mode). The selective adsorbent was synthesized using sodium (meta) arsenite as a template, 1-vinyl imidazole as a functional monomer, divinylbenzene as a cross-linker, and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. Optimized pre-concentration conditions imply fish extract (10 mL) pH adjustment at 8.5 before loading (flow rate of 0.25 mL min^-1), and elution with ultrapure water (2 mL) at 0.50 mL min^-1. A pre-concentration factor of 50 was finally obtained after evaporation to dryness (N₂ stream) and re-dissolution in 0.2 mL of ultrapure water before HPLC-ICP-MS. Synthesized material was found to pre-concentrate inorganic arsenic species; whereas organic arsenic compounds, mainly arsenobetaine (the major organoarsenic compound in fish/seafood products), were not found to interact with the adsorbent. The developed selective method gave limits of quantification of 1.05 and 1.31 µg kg^-1 for As (III) and As (V), respectively, and good precision [relative standard deviations lower than 12% in fish extracts spiked at several As (III) and As (V) levels]. The proposed method was finally applied to the selective determination of As (III) and As (V) species in several fishery products.

Ligandless, deep eutectic solvent-based ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction with solidification of the aqueous phase for preconcentration of lead, cadmium, cobalt and nickel in water samples

A green and efficient sample preparation method using a deep eutectic solvent-based ultrasounds-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction with solidification of the aqueous phase followed by high performance liquid chromatography analysis was developed for preconcentration and determination of heavy metals in environmental samples. In the proposed method, a novel, low density deep eutectic solvent was prepared by mixing trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride and thiosalicylic acid at a molar ratio of 1:2 and used both as an extractant and complexing agent. Ultrasound was used to disperse the extractant in the aqueous phase of the sample. Then, the phases were separated by centrifugation, after which the aqueous phase was frozen and the surface extractant phase was dissolved in a small volume of acetonitrile and subjected to liquid chromatographic analysis. The proposed method provided precisions (relative standard deviation, n = 5) in the range of 2.6-4.7%. The limit of detection were 0.05, 0.13, 0.06, and 0.11 µg/L for Pb(II), Cd(II), Co(II), Ni(II), respectively. The enhancement factors were equal to 154, 159, 162, and 158 for lead(II), cadmium(II), cobalt(II), and nickel(II), respectively. The accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated using certified reference materials (CA011b - hard drinking water, NIST 1643e - trace elements in water, TMRAIN-04 - simulated rain sample).

Introducing Frontal Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry as a Fast Method for Speciation Analysis: The Case of Inorganic Arsenic

A frontal chromatography-ICP-MS method (FC-ICP-MS) is proposed as an innovative approach for fast elemental speciation analysis: inorganic arsenic speciation was selected as the first case study to prove the feasibility of the technique and to explore its potentialities and limits. The principal benefits of the FC-ICP-MS approach are the short analysis time and the very simple instrumental setup. As(III) and As(V) front separation is performed over a strong anion exchanger at pH 7.5. After the optimization of the instrumental setup and the frontal chromatographic parameters, As(III) and As(V) concentrations up to 240 μg/kg can be determined within 120-140 s using different univariate and multivariate calibration approaches. Best results in terms of accuracy in prediction were obtained using the partial least squares (PLS) calibration achieving limits of detection of 0.18 and 0.21 μg/kg for As(III) and As(V), respectively. This approach was also used to establish the figures of merit of the method. The proved feasibility and good performances (in terms of analysis time and accuracy) of this technique lay the groundwork for future applications of FC-ICP-MS for the speciation of other elements.

Speciation Analysis of Trace Arsenic, Mercury, Selenium and Antimony in Environmental and Biological Samples Based on Hyphenated Techniques

In order to obtain a well understanding of the toxicity and ecological effects of trace elements in the environment, it is necessary to determine not only the total amount, but also their existing species. Speciation analysis has become increasingly important in making risk assessments of toxic elements since the toxicity and bioavailability strongly depend on their chemical forms. Effective separation of different species in combination with highly sensitive detectors to quantify these particular species is indispensable to meet this requirement. In this paper, we present the recent progresses on the speciation analysis of trace arsenic, mercury, selenium and antimony in environmental and biological samples with an emphasis on the separation and detection techniques, especially the recent applications of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) hyphenated to atomic spectrometry or mass spectrometry.

Speciation of zinc in fish feed by size exclusion chromatography coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry - using fractional factorial design for method optimisation and mild extraction conditions

Zinc (Zn) is an element essential to all living organisms and it has an important role as a cofactor of several enzymes. In fish, Zn deficiency has been associated with impaired growth, cataracts, skeletal abnormalities and reduced activity of various Zn metalloenzymes. Fish meal and fish oil traditionally used in salmon feed preparation are being replaced by plant-based ingredients. Zinc additives are supplemented to salmon feed to ensure adequate Zn levels, promoting good health and welfare in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The main objective of the present study was to evaluate Zn species found in an Atlantic salmon feed. This work describes a Zn extraction method that was optimized using a fractional factorial design (FFD), whereby the effect of six factors could be studied by performing only eight experiments. The effects of the type of extraction solution and its molar concentration, pH, presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate, temperature and extraction time on Zn extraction were investigated. Mild extraction conditions were chosen in order to keep the Zn species intact. Total Zn (soluble fractions and non-soluble fractions) was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The highest Zn recovery was obtained using 100 mM Tris-HCl, pH 8.5 at a temperature of 4 °C for 24 h where the total Zn in soluble fraction and non-soluble fraction was 9.9 ± 0.2% and 98 ± 6%, respectively. Zinc speciation analysis (on the soluble fractions) was further conducted by size exclusion inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (SEC-ICP-MS). The SEC-ICP-MS method provided qualitative and semi-quantitative information regarding Zn species present in the soluble fractions of the feed. Four Zn-containing peaks were found, each with different molecular weights: Peak 1 (high molecular weight - ≥600 kDa), peak 2 and peak 3 (medium molecular weight - 32 to 17 kDa) were the least abundant (1-6%), while peak 4 (low molecular weight - 17 to 1.36 kDa) was the most abundant (84-95%).

Determination and speciation of ultratrace arsenic and chromium species using aluminium oxide supported on graphene oxide

Alumina supported on graphene oxide (Al₂O₃/GO) nanocomposite as new nanosorbent in dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (DMSPE) for As(V) and Cr(III) preconcentration is described. The crucial issue of the study is synthesis of novel nanocomposite suitable for sorption of selected species of arsenic and chromium. Al₂O₃/GO demonstrates selectivity toward arsenates in the presence of arsenites at pH 5 and chromium(III) ions in the presence of chromate anions at pH 6. The Al₂O₃/GO nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the Raman spectroscopy. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated based on the Langmuir adsorption model were 43.9 mg g^-1 and 53.9 mg g^-1 for As(V) and Cr(III), respectively. The nanocomposite was used as solid sorbent in preconcentration of As(V) and Cr(III)_ions from water samples and their determination using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). The As(V) and Cr(III) ions can be quantitatively preconcentrated from 25 to 100 mL aqueous samples within 5 min using DMSPE procedure and 1 mg of Al₂O₃/GO. The nanocomposite was also used for preparation of Al₂O₃/GO membrane. Then, As(V) and Cr(III)_ions can be retained under flow condition by passing analyzed solution through Al₂O₃/GO membrane. Under the optimized conditions, As(V) and Cr(III) ions can be determined with very good recovery (92-108%), precision (RSD 2.7-4.0%) and excellent limit of detection (0.02 ng mL^-1 As and 0.11 ng mL^-1 Cr). The accuracy of the method was studied by analyzing certified reference materials (NIST 1640a) and spiked real water samples.
