Abstract
Potato virus Y (PVY) is an important plant virus that has spread worldwide, causing significant economic losses. To search for novel structures as potent antiviral agents, a series of chiral indole derivatives containing oxazoline moieties were designed and synthesized and their anti-PVY activities were evaluated. Biological activity tests demonstrated that many chiral compounds exhibited promising anti-PVY activities and that their absolute configurations exhibited obvious distinctions in antiviral bioactivities. Notably, compound (S)-4v displayed excellent curative and protective efficacy against PVY, with EC50 values of 328.6 and 256.1 μg/mL, respectively, which were superior to those of commercial virucide ningnanmycin (NNM, 437.4 and 397.4 μg/mL, respectively). The preliminary antiviral mechanism was investigated to determine the difference in antiviral activity between the two enantiomers of 4v chiral compounds. Molecular docking indicated a stronger binding affinity between the coating proteins of PVY (PVY-CP) and (S)-4v (-6.5 kcal/mol) compared to (R)-4v (-6.2 kcal/mol). Additionally, compound (S)-4v can increase the chlorophyll content and defense-related enzyme activities more effectively than its enantiomer. Therefore, this study provides an important basis for the development of chiral indole derivatives containing oxazoline moieties as novel agricultural chemicals.

Abstract
Food is one of the most necessary needs since human civilization. For Muslims, it is mandatory to consume halal food. From a halal authentication perspective, adulteration of food products is an emerging challenge worldwide. The demand for halal food consumption has resulted in an ever-increasing need for halal product validity. In the market, there are several food products in which actual ingredients and their source are not mentioned on the label and cannot be observed by the naked eye. Commonly nonhalal items include pig derivatives like lard, pork, and gelatin derivatives, dead meats, alcohol, blood, and prohibited animals. Purposely, various conventional and modern methods offer precise approaches to ensure the halalness and wholesomeness of food products. Conventional methods are physiochemical (dielectric) and electrophoresis. At the same time, modern techniques include high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), electronic nose (E-Nose), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. This review intends to give an extensive and updated overview of conventional and modern analytical methods for ensuring food halal authenticity.

Abstract
Chiral flavor substances play an important role in the human perception of different tastes. Here, we report a pure covalent-organic framework (COF) membrane nanochannel in combination with a chiral gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) selector for sensing chiral flavor substances. The pure COF membrane with a proper pore size is selected as the nanochannel, while l-cysteine-modified AuNPs (l-Cys-AuNPs) are used as the chiral selector. l-Cys-AuNPs show stronger binding to the S-enantiomer than the R-enantiomer, causing current reduction to different degrees for the R- and S-enantiomer to achieve chiral sensing due to the synergistic effect of the size exclusion of the COF nanochannel and the chiral selectivity of l-Cys-AuNPs. The developed COF membrane nanochannel sensing platform not only allows an easy balance of the permeability and selectivity, which is difficult to achieve in traditional polymer membrane nanochannel sensors, but also exhibits better chiral performance than commercial artificial anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanochannel sensors. The developed nanochannel sensor is successfully applied for sensing flavor enantiomers such as limonene, propanediol, methylbutyric acid, and butanol with the enantiomer excess values of 55.2% (propanediol) and 72.4% (limonene) and the low detection limits of 36 (limonene) and 71 (propanediol) ng L-1. This study provides a new idea for the construction of nanochannel platforms based on the COF for sensitive and selective chiral sensing.

Abstract
A zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8-silica hybrid monolithic column was prepared by one-step sol-gel method. The stationary phase in the monolithic column was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, and zeta potential. The results showed that ZIF-8-silica hybrid monolithic materials had abundant functional groups, good crystallinity, large specific surface area, and good thermal stability. A capillary electrochromatography (CEC) chiral separation system was for the first time constructed with ZIF-8-silica hybrid monolithic column and sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) as a chiral additive and was applied to separate the selected single and mixed chiral compounds (13 natural amino acids and 5 chiral pesticides). Under the optimized CEC conditions, all the single analytes achieved baseline separation with resolution of 2.14-5.94 and selectivity factor of 1.06-1.49 in less than 6 min, and the mixed amino acids with similar properties were also simultaneously enantioseparated (Rs ≥ 1.82). Relative standard deviations (RSDs) of migration time and column efficiency were lower than 4.26% and did not change significantly after 200 runs, evidencing excellent reproducibility and stability. These results demonstrate that the application of SBE-β-CD as a chiral additive for ZIF-8-silica hybrid monolithic columns is a promising method for the separation of chiral compounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent research has been reported that N-acetyl-leucine content is significantly reduced in the saliva of diabetic patients, but no reports of detection in human nails have been found. This study aims to develop a novel method for the chiral separation of N-acetyl-DL-leucine (Ac-DL-Leu) in human fingernails to investigate the differences between healthy volunteers (HVs), prediabetes (PDs) and diabetic patients (DPs), and to verify its effectiveness in early warning of diabetes. METHOD Chiral resolution was performed using DBD-Apy pre-column derivatization on a C18 column (2.1 × 150 mm, 1.9 μm) at 40 oC, and detected by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS. RESULTS The resolution and the limit of detection (LOD) of Ac-DL-Leu were 1.75 and 1.50 fmol, respectively. The linear range of Ac-DL-Leu was 10-2000 fmol and the determination coefficient (R2) was above 0.9997. The recovery of Ac-DL-Leu in human nails was 96.92-105.69%. The contents of Ac-D-Leu and Ac-L-Leu were analyzed in 18 HVs, 13 PDs and 16 DPs fingernails. The results showed that their contents were significantly lower in DPs than in PDs and HVs (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS A method for evaluating the effectiveness of Ac-DL-Leu enantiomers in human fingernails as a biomarker for diabetes was firstly developed.

Abstract
The early detection of pathogen infections in plants has become an important aspect of integrated disease management. Although previous research demonstrated the idea of applying digital technologies to monitor and predict plant health status, there is no effective system for detecting pathogen infection before symptomatology appears. This paper presents the use of a low-cost and portable electronic nose coupled with machine learning (ML) models for early disease detection. Several artificial neural network models were developed to predict plant physiological data and classify processing tomato plants and soil samples according to different levels of pathogen inoculum by using e-nose outputs as inputs, plant physiological data, and the level of infection as targets. Results showed that the pattern recognition models based on different infection levels had an overall accuracy of 94.4-96.8% for tomato plants and between 94.81% and 96.22% for soil samples. For the prediction of plant physiological parameters (photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and transpiration) using regression models or tomato plants, the overall correlation coefficient was 0.97-0.99, with very significant slope values in the range 0.97-1. The performance of all models shows no signs of under or overfitting. It is hence proven accurate and valid to use the electronic nose coupled with ML modeling for effective early disease detection of processing tomatoes and could also be further implemented to monitor other abiotic and biotic stressors.

Abstract
It is not a coincidence that both chirality and noncovalent interactions are ubiquitous in nature and synthetic molecular systems. Noncovalent interactivity between chiral molecules underlies enantioselective recognition as a fundamental phenomenon regulating life and human activities. Thus, noncovalent interactions represent the narrative thread of a fascinating story which goes across several disciplines of medical, chemical, physical, biological, and other natural sciences. This review has been conceived with the awareness that a modern attitude toward molecular chirality and its consequences needs to be founded on multidisciplinary approaches to disclose the molecular basis of essential enantioselective phenomena in the domain of chemical, physical, and life sciences. With the primary aim of discussing this topic in an integrated way, a comprehensive pool of rational and systematic multidisciplinary information is provided, which concerns the fundamentals of chirality, a description of noncovalent interactions, and their implications in enantioselective processes occurring in different contexts. A specific focus is devoted to enantioselection in chromatography and electromigration techniques because of their unique feature as "multistep" processes. A second motivation for writing this review is to make a clear statement about the state of the art, the tools we have at our disposal, and what is still missing to fully understand the mechanisms underlying enantioselective recognition.

Abstract
1H NMR spectroscopy is a quick and easy tool to resolve enantiomers. However, the paradigm of resolution of enantiomers by 1H NMR is a difficult task due to the minor chemical shift differences and overlap of the resonances of the enantiomers. In the current study, we have performed the conventional selective homodecoupling 1D-1H NMR experiment to achieve chiral resolutions. The predominant features of the proposed methods are (a) high sensitivity as opposed to routinely employed pure shift NMR experiments, (b) easy optimization like conventional 1D-1H NMR, and (c) an artifact-free spectrum. The application of the method has been exhibited in the measurement of proton chemical shift differences between diastereomers and enantiomer excess (ee). The broad use of the proposed method was demonstrated by employing the six samples utilizing the chiral solvating and derivatizing agents.

Abstract
The abuse of paramethoxymethamphetamine (PMMA) and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) among young people is increasingly serious and has become a public health problem. Since enantiomers of MDMA and PMMA are metabolized at different rates in the body and exhibit different neurotoxicity in tissues, we have developed a simple method for simultaneous enantiomeric determination of PMMA and MDMA, using parallel dual capillary immunoaffinity columns coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Linear calibration curves were obtained in concentration ranges of 100–1000 ng/mL, with a limit of quantitation of <22 ng/mL. Good interday accuracy and precision were achieved with this method. Besides filtering the urine sample through a 0.45 μm MILLIPORE membrane, no other sample pretreatment was needed, and no toxic organic solvent was used. It is a rapid, environmentally friendly safe method, and could be applied for routine enantiomeric analysis of PMMA and MDMA in the pharmaceutical industry, forensic science, and environmental analysis.

Abstract
Enantiomers of 1,2-Propylene glycol (1,2-PG) were investigated in 64 commercial Chinese Baijiu including soy sauce aroma-type Baijiu (SSB), strong aroma-type Baijiu (STB), and light aroma-type Baijiu (LTB), via chiral gas chromatography (β-cyclodextrin). The natural enantiomeric distribution and concentration of 1,2-PG in various baijiu were studied to evaluate whether the distribution and content of the two isomers of 1,2-PG were correlated with the aroma type and storage year. The results showed that 1,2-PG has a high enantiomeric ratio and the (S)-configuration predominated in SSB. The average S/R enantiomeric ratio of this compound in SSB was approximately 87:13 (±3.17), with an average concentration of 52.77 (±23.70) mg/L for the (S)-configuration and 8.72 (±3.63) mg/L for the (R)-enantiomer. The (R)-configuration was predominant in the STB, whereas neither (S) nor (R)-form of 1,2-PG were detected in LTB. The content of the two configurations of 1,2-PG in the JSHSJ vintage of SSB showed a wave variation, with an average S/R enantiomeric ratio of 89:11 (±1.15). The concentration of (R)-1,2-PG in XJCTJ vintage liquors showed an upward and then downward trend with aging time, with an overall downward trend, and the concentration of (S)-form showed a wavy change with an overall upward trend. Except for the LZLJ-2019 vintage where both (R) and (S)-1,2-PG were present, all other samples only existed (R)-form, and a decreasing trend of (R)-enantiomer with aging time was observed. The enantiomeric ratio of 1,2-PG might be one of the potential markers for adulteration control of Baijiu as industrial 1,2-PG usually presented in the racemic mixture. Sensory analysis revealed olfactory thresholds of 4.66 mg/L and 23.92 mg/L for the (R)- and (S)-configurations in pure water respectively. GC-O showed both enantiomers exhibited different aromatic nuances.

Abstract
We developed a novel fluorescent chiral probe, DBD-trans-2-methyl-L-proline (DBD-M-Pro), which can be used to target recognition of amino functional groups using chiral resolution. To investigate the chiral resolution efficiency, 20 chiral amino enantiomers (19 DL-amino acids and phenylethylamine) were labeled using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) with a fluorescence (FL) system. Diastereomers were formed by the reactions of DBD-M-Pro with enantiomers of amino functional groups at 60 °C for 60 min and detected on a BEH C18 column (100 × 2.1 mm, 1.7 μm). Gradient elution of 10 mM ammonium acetate with 0.05% formic acid (FA) aqueous solution and 0.1% FA acetonitrile or 0.1% FA methanol solution was performed at an excitation wavelength (Ex) 460 nm and emission wavelength (Em) 550 nm. Each resulting derivative of D- and L- type was effectively separated. The results showed that the resolution (Rs) of 17 amino acids and phenylethylamine (PEA) in the range of 1.59-24.11, except for histidine (His) (Rs = 1.32) and serine (Ser) (Rs = 1.47), achieved completely separation. The DBD-M-Pro chiral probe has a robust chiral selectivity for D-amino acids. Furthermore, a new method for the simultaneous determination of six DL-amino acids (Pro, Val, Trp, Phe, Leu, Lys) in human saliva was developed. The proposed method showed resolution values of 1.78-16.38, and an excellent linear relationship was obtained in the range of 2.5-500 pmol (R2 ≥ 0.9990). The limit of detection (S/N = 3) ranged from 0.5 to 3.75 pmol. The intra-day and inter-day coefficient of variation (CV) were within the range of 1.75-11.73%. The average addition recoveries in saliva ranged from 95.99 to 106.97%. The methodology was used to determine the content of DL-amino acids and the D/L-amino acid ratio in the saliva of 40 healthy volunteers (15 males and 25 females), as well as evaluating the differences between men and women. Our study suggests that the DBD-M-Pro chiral probe could be an effective tool for screening potential D-amino acid biomarkers in disease.

Abstract
In this work, novel stationary phase coatings by zeolite SiO2NPs coupled with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) or β-CD/L-phenylalanine were developed for chiral open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). The OT columns were prepared taking advantage of the strong adhesion of polydopamine in one-step method. Scanning electron micrography and electroosmotic flow were used to characterize the prepared single/dual-selector OT columns. Chiral separation of four chiral analytes (catechin/epicatechin, ephedrine/pseudoephedrine, ritodrine and salbutamol) was carried out in order to evaluate the performance of the prepared columns in OT-CEC with amperometric detection system. In terms of migration time, peak area, resolution, and selectivity factor of catechin/epicatechin and salbutamol, the run-to-run, day-to-day, and column-to-column repeatability were within 8.9%. Under the optimum conditions, the developed methods were applied for the analyses of Chinese herbal medicine Catechu herbs and salbutamol aerosol samples.

Abstract
The enantiomeric ratio of chiral compounds is known as a useful tool to estimate wine quality as well as observe an influence of wine-producing technology. The incorporation of flow-modulated comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography in this type of analysis provides a possibility to improve the quality of results due to the enhancement of separation capacity and resolution. In this study, flow-modulated comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography was incorporated in enantioselective analysis to determine the influence of winemaking technology on specific features of botrytized wines. The samples included Tokaj essences (high-sugar wines), Tokaj botrytized wines and varietal wines (Furmint, Muscat Lunel, Lipovina) and wines maturated on grape peels. The obtained data was processed with hierarchic cluster analysis to reveal variations in composition and assess classification ability for botrytized wines. A significant difference between the samples was observed for the enantiomeric distribution of ethyl lactate and presence of monoterpene alcohols. The varietal wines were successfully separated from the other types, which showed more similar results and could be divided with additional parameters. We observed a correlation between the botrytized wines and the varietal wines fermented with grape skins. As to the essences produced from juice of botrytized grapes, the results were quite similar to those of the botrytized wines, even though monoterpenes were not detected in the extracts.
