Abstract
Rossellomorea sp. y25, a putative new species of yellow pigment-producing, aerobic and chemoheterotrophic bacterium belonging to the family Bacillaceae, was isolated from the sediments at the depth of 1829 m in the South China Sea. In this study, we present the complete genome sequences of strain y25, which consisted of only one circular chromosome with 4,633,006 bp and the content of G + C was 41.76%. A total of 4466 CDSs, 106 tRNA, 33 rRNA, and 101 sRNA genes were obtained. Genomic analysis of strain y25 showed that it has the ability to produce antioxidant carotenoids and a large number of heavy metal resistance genes, such as arsenic, cadmium and zinc. In addition, strain y25 contains a prophage that may contribute to host protection against lysis by related Bacillus-like phages. This is the first report of genome-wide information on a bacterium of the genus Rossellomorea isolated from the deep sea, providing insights into how microorganisms of this genus adapt to deep-sea environments.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen that is considered a global health threat. This microorganism can adapt to hostile conditions by regulating membrane lipid composition in response to external stress factors such as changes in pH and ionic strength. S. aureus synthesizes and incorporates in its membrane staphyloxanthin, a carotenoid providing protection against oxidative damage and antimicrobial agents. Staphyloxanthin is known to modulate the physical properties of the bacterial membranes due to the rigid diaponeurosporenoic group it contains. In this work, preparative thin layer chromatography and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry were used to purify staphyloxanthin from S. aureus and characterize its structure, identifying C15, C17 and C19 as the main fatty acids in this carotenoid. Changes in the biophysical properties of models of S. aureus membranes containing phosphatidylglycerol, cardiolipin, and staphyloxanthin were evaluated. Infrared spectroscopy shows that staphyloxanthin reduces the liquid-crystalline to gel phase transition temperature in the evaluated model systems. Interestingly, these shifts are not accompanied by strong changes in trans/gauche isomerization, indicating that chain conformation in the liquid-crystalline phase is not altered by staphyloxanthin. In contrast, headgroup spacing, measured by Laurdan GP fluorescence spectroscopy, and lipid core dynamics, measured by DPH fluorescence anisotropy, show significant shifts in the presence of staphyloxanthin. The combined results show that staphyloxanthin reduces lipid core dynamics and headgroup spacing without altering acyl chain conformations, therefore decoupling these normally correlated effects. We propose that the rigid diaponeurosporenoic group in staphyloxanthin and its positioning in the membrane is likely responsible for the results observed.

Abstract
In this study, we tried to explore the influence of various tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates on carotenoid production and with a focus on enhancing pigment biosynthesis, we conducted two statistical analysis. In case of TCA intermediates influence on pigment production by Paracoccus marcusii RSPO1; fumaric acid, and malic acid were observed as potent enhancers of pigment biosynthesis. Further, to optimize key media components for enhanced carotenoid production, the Plackett-Burman design was employed encompassing carbon, nitrogen sources, TCA cycle intermediates, and metal salts. The selected factors after Plackett Burman were fine-tuned through Response Surface Methodology and the optimal concentrations that have remarkably elevated carotenoid production were starch-2.24 g/l, MgSO4-0.416 g/l, ZnSO4-0.0157 g/l, and fumaric Acid-16 mM. Further, evaluation of pigment cytotoxicity against normal (Vero) and Non-Small Cell Carcinoma (A549) cells was performed. The resultant IC50 values were quantified as 161.3 µg/ml and 7.623 µg/ml for Vero and A549 cells, respectively. Moreover, a reactive oxygen species (ROS) determination study in A549 cells was done which have shown a noteworthy threefold ROS production in A549 cells through fluorescence spectroscopic observation. This implies that the bacterial carotenoids can act as potent pro-oxidants against cancerous cells while being nontoxic toward normal cells.

Abstract
A novel endophytic bacterium, designated DY-R2A-6T, was isolated from oat (Avena sativa L.) seeds and found to produces β-carotene. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DY-R2A-6T had 96.3% similarity with Jiella aquimaris LZB041T, 96.0% similarity with Aurantimonas aggregate R14M6T and Aureimonas frigidaquae JCM 14755T, and less than 95.8% similarity with other genera in the family Aurantimonadaceae. The complete genome of strain DY-R2A-6T comprised 5,929,370 base pairs, consisting of one full chromosome (5,909,198 bp) and one plasmid (20,172 bp), with a G + C content was 69.1%. The overall genome-related index (OGRI), including digital DNA-DNA hybridization (<20.5%), ANI (<79.2%), and AAI (<64.2%) values, all fell below the thresholds set for novel genera. The major cellular fatty acids (>10%) of strain DY-R2A-6T were C16:0, C19:0 cyclo ω8c, and summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c and/or C18:1ω6c). Ubiquinone-10 was the main respiratory quinone. We identified the gene cluster responsible for carotenoid biosynthesis in the genome and found that the pink-pigment produced by strain DY-R2A-6T is β-carotene. In experiment with Arabidopsis seedlings, co-cultivation with strain DY-R2A-6T led to a 1.4-fold increase in plant biomass and chlorophyll content under salt stress conditions, demonstrating its capacity to enhance salt stress tolerance in plants. Moreover, external application of β-carotene to Arabidopsis seedlings under salt stress conditions also mitigated the stress significantly. Based on these findings, strain DY-R2A-6T is proposed to represent a novel genus and species in the family Aurantimonadaceae, named Jeongeuplla avenae gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is DY-R2A-6T (= KCTC 82985T = GDMCC 1.3014T). This study not only identified a new taxon but also utilized genome analysis to predict and confirm the production of β-carotene by strain DY-R2A-6T. It also demonstrated the ability of this strain to enhance salt stress tolerance in plants, suggesting potential application in agriculture to mitigate environmental stress in crops.

Abstract
Microbial pigments have many structures and functions with excellent characteristics, such as being biodegradable, non-toxic, and ecologically friendly, constituting an important source of pigments. Industrial production presents a bottleneck in production cost that restricts large-scale commercialization. However, microbial pigments are progressively gaining popularity because of their health advantages. The development of metabolic engineering and cost reduction of the bioprocess using industry by-products opened possibilities for cost and quality improvements in all production phases. We are thus addressing several points related to microbial pigments, including the major classes and structures found, the advantages of use, the biotechnological applications in different industrial sectors, their characteristics, and their impacts on the environment and society.

Abstract
Carotenoids are secondary metabolites that exhibit antioxidant properties and are characterized by a striking range of colorations from red to yellow. These natural pigments are synthesized by a wide range of eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. Among the latter, carotenoid-producing methanotrophic bacteria, which display fast growth on methane or natural gas, are of particular interest as potential producers of a feed protein enriched with carotenoids. Until recently, Methylomonas strain 16a and Methylomonas sp. ZR1 remained the only representatives of the genus for which detailed carotenoid profile was determined. In this study, we analyzed the genome sequences of five strains of Methylomonas species whose pigmentation varied from white and yellow to orange and red, and identified carotenoids produced by these bacteria. Carotenoids synthesized using four pigmented strains included C30 fraction, primarily composed of 4,4'-diaplycopene-4,4'-dioic acid and 4,4'-diaplycopenoic acid, as well as C40 fraction with the major compound represented by 1,1'-dihydroxy-3,4-didehydrolycopene. The genomes of studied Methylomonas strains varied in size between 4.59 and 5.45 Mb and contained 4201-4735 protein-coding genes. These genomes and 35 reference Methylomonas genomes available in the GenBank were examined for the presence of genes encoding carotenoid biosynthesis. Genomes of all pigmented Methylomonas strains harbored genes necessary for the synthesis of 4,4'-diaplycopene-4,4'-dioic acid. Non-pigmented "Methylomonas montana" MW1T lacked the crtN gene required for carotenoid production. Nearly all strains possessed phytoene desaturases, which explained their ability to naturally synthesize lycopene. Thus, members of the genus Methylomonas can potentially be considered as producers of C30 and C40 carotenoids from methane.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria are traditionally applied in a variety of fermented food products, and they have the ability to produce a wide range of bioactive ingredients during fermentation, including vitamins, bacteriocins, bioactive peptides, and bioactive compounds. The bioactivity and health benefits associated with these ingredients have garnered interest in applications in the functional dairy market and have relevance both as components produced in situ and as functional additives. This review provides a brief description of the regulations regarding the functional food market in the European Union, as well as an overview of some of the functional dairy products currently available in the Irish and European markets. A better understanding of the production of these ingredients excreted by lactic acid bacteria can further drive the development and innovation of the continuously growing functional food market.

Abstract
The red velvet mite, Balaustium murorum (Hermann), is a pollenophagous free-living mite with a flashy red body. This mite occurs in early spring and lives on sunny surfaces of human-made structures, such as concrete. Hence, it is inevitably exposed to a harsh environment due to solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation and radiant heat, which cause oxidative stress via the production of reactive oxygen species. The spider mite Panonychus citri that resides on upper leaf surfaces accumulates synthesized keto-carotenoids to protect against oxidative stress. Therefore, we evaluated carotenoid composition in the red pigment of B. murorum. To identify major carotenoids, we performed a high-performance liquid chromatography analysis of intact and de-esterified pigments of B. murorum females. The flashy red pigments of B. murorum consisted of the highly abundant keto-carotenoids astaxanthin and 3-hydroxyechinenone (60 and 38% of major carotenoids, respectively), and a small amount of β-carotene (2%). Although P. citri is an astaxanthin-rich species, the astaxanthin concentration (per protein) in B. murorum is 127-fold that in P. citri. Due to their high antioxidant activities, those keto-carotenoids probably contribute to the survival of B. murorum in the harsh environment caused by solar UV-B radiation and radiant heat in inorganic habitats.

Abstract
Color of a food is one of the major factors influencing its acceptance by consumers. At presently synthetic dyes are the most commonly used food colorant in food industry by providing more esthetically appearance and as a means to quality control. However, the growing concern about health and environmental due to associated toxicity with synthetic food colorants has accelerated the global efforts to replace them with safer and healthy food colorants obtained from natural resources (plants, microorganisms, and animals). Further, many of these biocolorants not only provide myriad of colors to the food but also exert biological properties, thus they can be used as nutraceuticals in foods and beverages. In order to understand the importance of nature-derived pigments as food colorants, this review provides a thorough discussion on the natural origin of food colorants. Following this, different extraction methods for isolating biocolorants from plants and microbes were also discussed. Many of these biocolorants not only provide color, but also have many health promoting properties, for this reason their physicochemical and biological properties were also reviewed. Finally, current trends on the use of biocolorants in foods, and the challenges faced by the biocolorants in their effective utilization by food industry and possible solutions to these challenges were discussed.
