Recent Progress in Nanoparticles Based Sensors for the Detection of Mercury (II) Ions in Environmental and Biological Samples

Advancements in mercury detection using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs): a review

Mercury (Hg) contamination remains a major environmental concern primarily due to its presence at trace levels, making monitoring the concentration of Hg challenging. Sensitivity and selectivity are significant challenges in the development of mercury sensors. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) are two distinct analytical methods developed and employed for mercury detection. In this review, we provide an overview of the key aspects of SERS and IIP methodologies, focusing on the recent advances in sensitivity and selectivity for mercury detection. By examining the critical parameters and challenges commonly encountered in this area of research, as reported in the literature, we present a set of recommendations. These recommendations cover solid and colloidal SERS substrates, appropriate Raman reporter/probe molecules, and customization of IIPs for mercury sensing and removal. Furthermore, we provide a perspective on the potential integration of SERS with IIPs to achieve enhanced sensitivity and selectivity in mercury detection. Our aim is to foster the establishment of a SERS-IIP hybrid method as a robust analytical tool for mercury detection across diverse fields.

Thiourea Functionalised Receptor for Selective Detection of Mercury Ions and its Application in Serum Sample

A thiourea functionalised fluorescent probe 1-phenyl-3-(pyridin-4-yl)thiourea was synthesized and utilised as a fluorescent turn-on chemosensor for the selective recognition of Hg2+ ion over competitive metal ions including Na+, Mn2+, Li+, Cr2+, Ni2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Mg2+, K+, Co2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Al3+ and Fe2+ ions based on the inter-molecular charge transfer (ICT). Intriguingly, the receptor demonstrated unique sensing capabilities for Hg2+ in DMSO: H2O (10:90, v/v). The addition of Hg2+ ions to the sensor resulted in a blue shift in the absorption intensity and also enhancement in fluorescence intensity at 435 nm. Fluorescence emission intensity increased linearly with Hg2+ concentration ranging from 0 to 80 µL. The detection limit and binding constant were determined as 0.134 × 10-6 M and 1.733 × 107 M-1, respectively. The sensing behavior of Hg2+ was further examined using DLS, SEM and FTIR. The probe could detect Hg2+ ions across a wide pH range. Furthermore, the receptor L demonstrated good sensing performance for Hg2+ in bovine serum albumin and actual water samples.

Green cleanup of styrene-contaminated soil by carbon-based nanoscale zero-valent iron and phytoremediation: Sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea), zinnia (Zinnia violacea Cav.), and marigold (Tagetes erecta L.)

Accidental chemical spills can result in styrene-contaminated soil. Styrene negatively affects human health and the environment. The objective of this study was to remediate styrene-contaminated soil using a combination of activated carbon-based nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI-AC) and phytoremediation by sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea), zinnia (Zinnia violacea Cav.) and marigolds (Tagetes erecta L.). The results showed that all three plant types could potentially increase the removal efficiency of styrene-contaminated soil. At 28 days, all three plants showed complete removal of styrene from the soil with 1 g/kg of nZVI-AC, activated carbon-based nZVI synthesized by tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) (T-nZVI-AC), or activated carbon-based nZVI synthesized by red Thai holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum L.) (B-nZVI-AC). However, styrene removal efficiencies of sunn hemp, zinnia, and marigold without carbon-based nZVI were 30%, 67%, and 56%, respectively. Statistical analysis (ANOVA) revealed that the removal efficiencies differed significantly from those of phytoremediation alone. With the same removal efficiency (100%), the biomass of sunn hemp in nano-phytoremediation treatments differed by approximately 55%, whereas the biomass of zinnia differed by >67%, compared with that of the control experiment. For marigold, the difference in biomass was only 30%. Styrene was adsorbed on surface of soil and AC and then further oxidized under air-water-nZVI environment, while phytovolatilization played an important role in transporting the remaining styrene from the contaminated soil to the air. Marigold was used as an alternative plant for the nano-phytoremediation of styrene-contaminated soil because of its sturdy nature, high biomass, tolerance to toxic effects, and ease of cultivation. Remediation of one cubic meter of styrene-contaminated soil by a combination of carbon-based nanoscale zero-valent iron and phytoremediation by marigolds emitted 0.0027 kgCO2/m3.

Nanoparticles Based Sensors for Cyanide Ion Sensing, Basic Principle, Mechanism and Applications

Rapidly detecting potentially toxic ions such as cyanide is paramount to maintaining a sustainable and environmentally friendly ecosystem for living organisms. In recent years, molecular sensors have been developed to detect cyanide ions, which provide a naked-eye or fluorometric response, making them an ideal choice for cyanide sensing. Nanosensors, on the other hand, have become increasingly popular over the last two decades due water solubility, quick reaction times, environmental friendliness, and straightforward synthesis. Researchers have designed many nanosensors and successfully utilized them for the detection of cyanide ions in various environmental samples. The majority of these sensors use gold and silver-based nanosensors because cyanide ions have a high affinity for these metals ions and coordinate through covalent bonds. These metal nanoparticles are typically combined or coated with fluorescent materials, which quench their fluorescence. However, adding cyanide ions etches out the metal nanoparticles, restoring their fluorescence/color. This principle has been followed by most nanosensors used for cyanide ion sensing. In this review, different nanosensors and their sensing mechanisms are discussed in relation to cyanide ions. The primary purpose is to compare the sensing abilities of these sensors, mainly their sensitivity, advantages, application and to find out research gaps for future work. In this review paper, the development made in nanosensors in the last thirteen years (2010-2023) was discussed and the nanosensors for cyanide ions were compared with molecular sensors while the nanosensors with the excellent limit of detection were highlighted.

Recent Development in Fluorescent Probes for the Detection of Hg2+ Ions

Mercury, a highly toxic heavy metal, poses significant environmental and health risks, necessitating the development of effective and responsive techniques for its detection. Organic chromophores, particularly small molecules, have emerged as promising materials for sensing Hg²⁺ ions due to their high selectivity, sensitivity, and ease of synthesis. In this review article, we provide a systematic overview of recent advancements in the field of fluorescent chemosensors for Hg²⁺ ions detection, including rhodamine derivatives, Schiff bases, coumarin derivatives, naphthalene derivatives, BODIPY, BOPHY, naphthalimide, pyrene, dicyanoisophorone, bromophenol, benzothiazole flavonol, carbonitrile, pyrazole, quinoline, resorufin, hemicyanine, monothiosquaraine, cyanine, pyrimidine, peptide, and quantum/carbon dots probes. We discuss their detection capabilities, sensing mechanisms, limits of detection, as well as the strategies and approaches employed in their design. By focusing on recent studies conducted between 2022 and 2023, this review article offers valuable insights into the performance and advancements in the field of fluorescent chemosensors for Hg²⁺ ions detection.

Gold Nanoparticles-Based Colorimetric Assays for Environmental Monitoring and Food Safety Evaluation

Recent years have witnessed an exponential increase in the research on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-based colorimetric sensors to revolutionize point-of-use sensing devices. Hence, this review is compiled focused on current progress in the design and performance parameters of AuNPs-based sensors. The review begins with the characteristics of AuNPs, followed by a brief explanation of synthesis and functionalization methods. Then, the mechanisms of AuNPs-based sensors are comprehensively explained in two broad categories based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) characteristics of AuNPs and their peroxidase-like catalytic properties (nanozyme). SPR-based colorimetric sensors further categorize into aggregation, anti-aggregation, etching, growth-mediated, and accumulation-based methods depending on their sensing mechanisms. On the other hand, peroxidase activity-based colorimetric sensors are divided into two methods based on the expression or inhibition of peroxidase-like activity. Next, the analytes in environmental and food samples are classified as inorganic, organic, and biological pollutants, and recent progress in detection of these analytes are reviewed in detail. Finally, conclusions are provided, and future directions are highlighted. Improving the sensitivity, reproducibility, multiplexing capabilities, and cost-effectiveness for colorimetric detection of various analytes in environment and food matrices will have significant impact on fast testing of hazardous substances, hence reducing the pollution load in environment as well as rendering food contamination to ensure food safety.

A Review on Organic Fluorimetric and Colorimetric Chemosensors for the Detection of Ag(I) Ions

Organic compounds display several electronic and structural features which enable their application in various fields, ranging from biological to non-biological. These compounds contain heteroatoms like sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen, which provide coordination sites to act as ligands in the field of coordination chemistry and are used as chemosensors to detect various metal ions. This review article covers different organic compounds including thiourea, Schiff base, pyridine, thiophene, coumarin, triazolyl pyrenes, imidazole, fluorescein, thiazole, tricarbocyanine, rhodanine, porphyrin, hydrazone, benzidine and other functional groups based chemosensors, that contain heteroatoms like sulfur, nitrogen and, oxygen for fluorimetric and colorimetric detection of Ag+ in different environmental, agricultural, and biological samples. Further, the sensing mechanism and performances of these chemosensors have been discussed, which could help the readers for the future design of highly efficient, selective, and sensitive chemosensors for the detection and determination of Ag+ ions.

Highly selective and sensitive spectrofluorimetric method for determination of cypermethrin in different environmental samples

A sensitive, selective, and simple spectrofluorimetric method for the detection and determination of cypermethrin (CYP) in various samples based on thioglycolic acid-caped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (TGA@Mn-ZnS-QDs) is reported. These quantum dots were synthesized using the Gonzalez method. The synthesized quantum dots were structurally characterized with the help of different spectroscopic techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) techniques and fluorescence spectroscopy. The quantum dots were used for spectrofluorimetric detection and determination of CYP. The emission peak of these quantum dots at 632 nm showed a linear quenching with increasing the concentration of CYP, noticing an excellent linear relationship between F°/F values and CYP in the range of 0.5-12 µg mL^-1 with a correlation coefficient (R²) of 0.992. The influence of different physiochemical parameters such as time, pH, the concentration of quantum dots, and other pesticides interference on the fluorescence quenching was investigated. The detection limit was calculated to be 0.132 µg mL^-1. The developed method was successfully applied for the detection and determination of CYP in various spiked samples (tomato, okra, pea, spinach, soil, and water) using the spike and recovery methods. The percent recoveries of CYP from these samples were found to be 77 ± 0.05% to 95 ± 0.12% at various levels.

Organic Molecules Containing N, S and O Heteroatoms as Sensors for the Detection of Hg(II) Ion; Coordination and Efficiency toward Detection

Rapid detection of potentially toxic heavy metals like Hg(II) has attracted great attention in the last few decades due to the importance to maintain a safe and sustainable environment for human beings. Coordination chemistry and concepts therein, play an important role in the detection of Hg(II). Size, charge, and nature of the donor atom and the respective cation (metal ion), are crucial in selective interactions between the sensor and metal ions. The sensors designed for the purpose, coordinate to Hg(II) ion through various donor sites, coordination causes a change in the electron density in organic molecules and results in either visible color change or enhancing/quenching fluorescence intensity. Since Hg(II) is soft metal, with d10 electron system, so majority of the sensors have soft donor sites which prefer to coordinate with Hg(II). Oxygen is also present in some chelating ligands which is least preferred coordination site, due to its hard nature. There are several reports of replacing other ligating sites by sulfur for enhanced mercury sensing. In some cases, desulfurization is being detected as clear change in spectral behavior during the sensing process. Efforts are still in progress to design and introduce a sensor with utmost sensitivity and selectivity. In this review, we made an attempt to explain the coordination aspects of Hg(II) detectors, reasons for poor efficiency and possible suggestions to improve the selection criterion of various compounds. It will help researchers to know about important concepts in designing more sensitive and selective sensors for detection of Hg(II) in environmental and biological samples.

A Review on Recent Progress in Organic Fluorimetric and Colorimetric Chemosensors for the Detection of Cr3+/6+Ions

Chromium occurs in the environment primarily in two valence states, trivalent Cr3+ and hexavalent Cr6+, which have different physicochemical and biochemical properties. However, the higher concentration of Cr3+/6+ can cause various adverse effects on human health. Therefore, detecting Cr3+/6+ ions is important in various samples. Colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors are the most powerful tools for the detection of Cr3+/6+ ions. These chemosensors have excellent bioimaging capability and significant sensitivity and selectivity. In this article, different colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors based on organic compounds, including Schiff base, antipyrine, diarylethene, pyrene, crown ether, dansyl, pyridine, thiazole, coumarin, boradiazaindacene, rhodamine, imidazole, hydrazone, and other functional groups for detection of Cr3+/6+ ions have been reviewed, classified them according to different fluorophore and recognition mode. I hope this article will help the readers for the future design of highly effective, sensitive, and selective chemosensors for the detection and determination of Cr3+/6+ ions.

Synthesis, Characterization and Applications of Schiff Base Chemosensor for Determination of Cr(III) Ions

The development of a highly sensitive, selective, and efficient sensor for the determination and detection of Cr(III) ions remains a great challenge. Recently, some fluorescent chemosensors have been developed for the recognition of Cr(III) ions. But, the main drawbacks of the reported fluorescent chemosensors are the lack of selectivity and interference of anions and other trivalent cations. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel thiazole-based fluorescent and colorimetric Schiff base chemosensor SB2 for the detection of Cr(III) ion by chemodosimetric approach. Using different analytical techniques including UV-vis, ¹³C-NMR, ¹H-NMR, and FT-IR analysis the chemosensor SB2 was structurally characterized. The fully characterized chemosensor SB2 was used for the spectrofluorimetric and colorimetric detection of Cr(III) ions. Interestingly, chemosensor SB2 upon interaction with various metal cations including Ni²⁺, Na⁺, Cd²⁺, Ag⁺, Mn²⁺, K⁺, Zn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Hg²⁺, Co²⁺, Pb²⁺, Mg²⁺, Sn²⁺, Al³⁺ and Cr³⁺ displays highly selective and sensitive fluorescent (turn-on) and colorimetric (yellow to colorless) response toward Cr(III) ions. The fluorescence and UV-vis techniques confirmed the selective hydrolysis of azomethine group (-C = N-) of Schiff base chemosensor SB2 by Cr(III) ions. As a result, the fluorescence enhancement was observed that is corresponding to 2-hydroxy-1-nepthaldehyde (fluorophore). The chemosensor SB2 exhibits high interference performance towards Cr(III) ions over other metal cations in a wide pH range. Mover, the quite low detection limit was calculated to be 0.027 µg ml-1 (0.5 µM) (3σ/slop), lower than the maximum tolerable limits of Cr(III ions (10 µM) in drinking water permitted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These results show that chemosensor SB2 has great potential to detect selectively Cr(III) ions in the agricultural, environmental and biological analysis system.
