Abstract
Beta vulgaris var. crassa is undoubtedly a very important plant that is not used enough in the world. In this study, it was aimed to determine the cytotoxic activities of the components (essential oils, fatty acids, total phenol and flavonoid) found in the leaf parts of Beta vulgaris var. crassa against PC-3, MCF-7 and HeLa cancer cell lines. In addition, the effectiveness of these ingredients against bacteria and fungi that can cause serious health problems in humans was tested. In experiments, three tumor cell lines were exposed to various plant extract concentrations (31.25, 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 µg/mL) for 72 h. It was found that plant extracts showed high (SI: 2.14 > 2) cytotoxicity to PC-3 cells, moderate (SI: 1.62 < 2) to HeLa cells, and low (SI: 0.93 < 2) cytotoxicity to MCF-7 cells. Also, different plant extract concentrations were found to cause an inhibition rate of 16.3-22.3% in Staphylococcus aureus, 16.8-23.5% in Streptococcus pyogenes and 12-16.2% in Cutibacterium acnes. Similarly, inhibition rates were determined between 9.5-20.7% for Candida albicans, 3.5-7.7% for Candida auris, and 5.5-15.1% for Candida glabrata. The results showed that the plant extract exhibited a concentration-dependent cytotoxic and antimicrobial effect against both cancer cell lines and microbial pathogens. Abstract
This work aimed to develop gluten-free snacks such as crispbread based on beetroot pomace (Beta vulgaris L.) and golden linseed (Lini semen). Beetroot is attracting more and more consumer attention because of its nutritional and health properties. The use of beet pomace contributes to waste management. Linseed, known as a superfood with many health-promoting properties, was used to produce crispbreads as an alternative to cereals, which are allergens. Beetroot pomace and whole or ground linseed were used in different proportions to produce crispbread snacks. Chemical and physical analyses were performed including water activity, dry matter, betalains, and polyphenols content, as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A sensory evaluation and microstructure observations were also performed. The obtained snacks were characterized by low water activity (0.290-0.395) and a high dry matter content (93.43-97.53%), which ensures their microbiological stability and enables longer storage. Beetroot pomace provided betalains-red (14.59-51.44 mg betanin/100 g d.m.) and yellow dyes (50.02-171.12 mg betanin/100 g d.m.)-while using linseed enriched the product with polyphenols (730-948 mg chlorogenic acid/100 g d.m.). FTIR analysis showed the presence of functional groups such as the following: -OH, -C-O, -COOH, and -NH. The most desired overall consumer acceptability was achieved for snacks containing 50% beetroot pomace and 50% linseed seeds. The obtained results confirmed that beetroot pomace combined with linseed can be used in the production of vegetable crispbread snacks.

Abstract
Various environmental, food security and population health problems have been correlated with the use of intensive agriculture production systems around the world. This type of system leads to the loss of biodiversity and natural habitats, high usage rates of agrochemicals and natural resources, and affects soil composition, human health, and nutritional plant quality in rural areas. Agroecological intercropping systems that respect agrobiodiversity, on the other hand, can significantly benefit ecosystems, human health, and food security by modifying the nutritional profile and content of some health-promoting bioactive compounds in the species cultivated in this system. However, research on intercropping strategies focuses more on the benefits they can offer to ecosystems, and less on plant nutrient composition, and the existing information is scattered. The topic merits further study, given the critical impact that it could have on human nutrition. The aim of this review is therefore to collect viable details on the status of research into the profile of nutrients and bioactive compounds in intercropping systems in different regions of the world with unique mixed crops using plant species, along with the criteria for combining them, as well as the nutrients and bioactive compounds analyzed, to exemplify the possible contributions of intercropping systems to food availability and quality.

Abstract
Data from epidemiological and experimental studies have evidenced that some chemical contaminants in food elicit their harmful effects by targeting the central nervous system. Ochratoxin A is a foodborne mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium species. Research on neurotoxicity associated with ochratoxin A exposure has increased greatly in recent years. The present review accrued substantial evidence on the neurotoxicity associated with ochratoxin A exposure as well as discussed notable susceptible targets of noxious ochratoxin A at molecular, cellular and genetic levels. Specifically, the neurotoxic mechanisms associated with ochratoxin A exposure were unequivocally unraveled in vitro using human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells, mouse hippocampal HT22 cells, human astrocyte (NHA-SV40LT) cells and microglia cells as well as in vivo using mammalian and non-mammalian models. Data from human biomonitoring studies on plasma ochratoxin A levels in patients with neurodegenerative diseases with some age- and sex-related responses were also highlighted. Moreover, the neurotherapeutic mechanisms of some naturally occurring bioactive compounds against ochratoxin A neurotoxicity are reviewed. Collectively, accumulated data from literature demonstrate that ochratoxin A is a neurotoxin with potential pathological involvement in neurological disorders. Cutting edge original translational research on the development of neurotherapeutics for neurotoxicity associated with foodborne toxicants including ochratoxin A is indispensable.

Abstract
Globally, dengue (DENV) fever has appeared as the most widespread vector-borne disease, affecting more than 100 million individuals annually. No approved anti-DENV therapy or preventive vaccine is available yet. DENV NS3 protein is associated with protease activity and is essential for viral replication process within the host cell. NS2B is linked with NS3 protein as a cofactor. Hence, NS3/NS2B is a potential druggable target for developing inhibitors against dengue virus. In the present study, a dataset of Beta vulgaris L.-based natural compounds was developed. Virtual ligand screening of 30 phytochemicals was carried out to find novel inhibitors against the NS2B/NS3 protein. Spatial affinity, drug-likeness, and binding behaviors of selected phytochemicals were analyzed. Post-simulation analysis, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), MMGBSA, and Co-relation analysis, was also performed to provide deep insight for elucidating protein-ligand complexes. This computer-aided screening scrutinized four potent phytochemicals, including betavulgaroside II, vitexin xyloside, epicatechin, and isovitexin2-O-xyloside inhibitors exhibiting optimal binding with viral NS3/NS2B protein. Our study brings novel scaffolds against DENV NS2B/NS3 of serotype-2 to act as lead molecules for further biological optimization. In future, this study will prompt the exploration and development of adjuvant anti-DENV therapy based on natural compounds.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Sugar beet is one of the most important sugar crops in the world. It contributes greatly to the global sugar production, but salt stress negatively affects the crop yield. WD40 proteins play important roles in plant growth and response to abiotic stresses through their involvement in a variety of biological processes, such as signal transduction, histone modification, ubiquitination, and RNA processing. The WD40 protein family has been well-studied in Arabidopsis thaliana, rice and other plants, but the systematic analysis of the sugar beet WD40 proteins has not been reported. In this study, a total of 177 BvWD40 proteins were identified from the sugar beet genome, and their evolutionary characteristics, protein structure, gene structure, protein interaction network and gene ontology were systematically analyzed to understand their evolution and function. Meanwhile, the expression patterns of BvWD40s under salt stress were characterized, and a BvWD40-82 gene was hypothesized as a salt-tolerant candidate gene. Its function was further characterized using molecular and genetic methods. The result showed that BvWD40-82 enhanced salt stress tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis seedlings by increasing the contents of osmolytes and antioxidant enzyme activities, maintaining intracellular ion homeostasis and increasing the expression of genes related to SOS and ABA pathways. The result has laid a foundation for further mechanistic study of the BvWD40 genes in sugar beet tolerance to salt stress, and it may inform biotechnological applications in improving crop stress resilience.

Abstract
Dragon fruit (Hylocereus genus) has the potential for the prevention of diseases associated with inflammatory and oxidative processes. We aimed to comprehensively review dragon fruit health effects, economic importance, and possible use in delivery systems. Pubmed, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched, and PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) guidelines were followed. Studies have shown that pitaya can exert several benefits in conditions such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer due to the presence of bioactive compounds that may include vitamins, potassium, betacyanin, p-coumaric acid, vanillic acid, and gallic acid. Moreover, pitaya has the potential to be used in food and nutraceutical products as functional ingredients, natural colorants, ecologically correct and active packaging, edible films, preparation of photoprotective products, and additives. Besides the importance of dragon fruit as a source of bioactive compounds, the bioavailability is low. The development of delivery systems such as gold nanoparticles with these compounds can be an alternative to reach target tissues.

Abstract
Consumers have an increasing demand for fruit and vegetables with high nutritional value worldwide. However, most fruit and vegetables are vulnerable to quality loss and spoilage during processing, transportation, and storage. Among the recently introduced emerging technologies, supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) has been extensively utilized to treat and maintain fruit and vegetables mainly due to its nontoxicity, safety, and environmentally friendly. SCCO2 technology generates low processing costs and mild processing conditions (temperature and pressure) that allow for the application of CO2 at a supercritical state. This review aimed to summarize the current knowledge on the influence of SCCO2 technology on the quality attributes of fruit and vegetable products, such as physicochemical properties (pH, color, cloud, particle size distribution, texture), sensory quality, and nutritional composition (ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, carotenoids, and betalains). In addition, the effects and mechanisms of the SCCO2 technique on endogenous enzyme inactivation (polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, and pectin methylesterase) were also elucidated. Finally, the prospects of the SCCO2 technique for industrial application was discussed from the economic and regulatory aspect.
