Antioxidant and antifungal activities of the flowers’ essential oil of Tagetes minuta, (Z)-tagetone and thiotagetone

Bioprospecting of Essential Oil-Bearing Plants: Rapid Screening of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Headspace Bubble-in-Drop Single-Drop Microextraction for Gas Chromatography Analysis

Essential oils are vital constituents of oil-bearing plants. However, their screening still demands harvesting of the plant for laboratory analysis. We report herein a simple, rapid and robust headspace bubble-in-drop microextraction screening technique (BID-SPME) requiring only small amounts of plant material. The optimised method uses 0.5 g of the crushed plant leaves sample obtained in a 2 mL capped chromatography vial, heated to 55 °C and sampled with 2 µL heptadecane in a Hamilton gastight syringe equilibrated for 15 min exposed to the headspace volume. The method was applied to three plants, Pinus radiata, Tagetes minuta and Artemisia afra, which are known for their essential oil content. The method was able to extract at least 80% of the oil constituents in such abundance that they could be easily annotated using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) mass spectral libraries. The major volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detected included tagetone, terpinen-4-ol, ocimenone, caryophyllene, dihydrotagetone, terpinolene and artemisia ketone, just to mention a few, at different concentrations in different plants. Importantly, these annotated VOCs were also reported in other studies in the same and even different plants, extracted using normal steam distillation and importantly those reported in the literature for different extraction techniques.

Effect of Gelled Emulsions Elaborated with Soybean Oil, Maca (Lepidium meyenni) Flour, and Chincho (Tagetes elliptica Sm.) Essential Oil upon Animal Fat Substitution in Beef Burgers

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of pork backfat (PB) substitution in a meat burger with a gelled emulsion (GE) elaborated with maca flour, soybean oil, and chincho essential oil (CEO). Lipid profile (gas chromatography—GC), health indices, physicochemical properties (CIELAB color, pH, texture profile—TPA), and cooking and sensory characteristics of meat burgers were analyzed. Five formulations were evaluated: control (BC) (80% beef meat and 20% PB); BSM (10% PB + 10% GE); BSMC0.25 (BSM + 0.25% CEO); BSMC0.5 (BSM + 0.5% CEO), and BSMC1.0 (BSM + 1.0% CEO). GE substitution in meat burgers provided a healthier lipid profile; the amount of SFA was reduced (p < 0.05), while PUFA content was significantly increased (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the use of GE resulted in healthier PUFA/SFA ratios and lower atherogenic and thrombogenic indices. The addition of GE increased moisture content and decreased fat and protein contents. Color parameters (L*, b*, and C*) decreased after cooking. Hardness (p < 0.05), cooking losses, and shrinkage changes decreased with GE addition. Lipid oxidation levels were significantly (p < 0.05) affected by GE substitution. Therefore, the substitution of PB by GE can be considered as an effective strategy to produce healthier meat burgers without negatively affecting their physicochemical and technological properties.

Production Technology of Phytopreparations Based on Essential Oils

The article provides an overview of phytopreparations technology based on essential oils, in particular: criteria for the selection of components, qualitative and quantitative compositions analyzes, parameters of the technological cycle of production of drugs, problems of standardization and quality control of stages of the production of original drugs. A number of standard samples based on terpenoids for phased quality control of the production of medicinal products are described, which are included in the European, Kazakhstan and Japanese pharmacopeias. The main countries producing essential oils and their components, as well as manufacturers of phytopreparations based on them are indicated. The modern technologies for the production of essential oils from plant materials are reviewed, namely: microwave and ultrasonic extractions, supercritical carbon dioxide extraction and micro-steam distillation with solid phase microextraction. The dosage forms of preparations based on essential oils (tablets, ointments, gels, oil solutions, suppositories, sprays, aerosols, nanocapsules), their relationship with bioavailability and therapeutic effect are discussed. Promising dosage forms that ensure dosage accuracy for the targeted action of drugs based on essential oils have been identified.
