Substituent effects in the asymmetric Diels-Alder cycloaddition of 3,4,5-triaryl-1-(+)-neomenthyl-1,2-diphospholes’ with maleic acid derivatives

Thiophosphonium-Alkyne Cycloaddition Reactions: A Heavy Congener of the Carbonyl-Alkyne Metathesis

While the metathesis reaction between alkynes and thiocarbonyl compounds has been thoroughly studied, the reactivity of alkynes with isoelectronic main group R₂E=S compounds is rarely reported and unknown for [R₂P=S]⁺ analogues. We show that thiophosphonium ions, which are the isoelectronic phosphorus congeners to thiocarbonyl compounds, undergo [2 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions with different alkynes to generate 1,2-thiaphosphete ions. The four-membered ring species are in an equilibrium state with the corresponding P=C–C=S heterodiene structure and thus undergo hetero-Diels–Alder reactions with acetonitrile. Heteroatom and substituent effects on the energy profile of the 1,2-thiaphosphete formation were elucidated by means of quantum chemical methods.

Oxophosphonium-Alkyne Cycloaddition Reactions: Reversible Formation of 1,2-Oxaphosphetes and Six-membered Phosphorus Heterocycles

While the metathesis reaction between alkynes and carbonyl compounds is an important tool in organic synthesis, the reactivity of alkynes with isoelectronic main-group R₂E═O compounds is unexplored. Herein, we show that oxophosphonium ions, which are the isoelectronic phosphorus congeners to carbonyl compounds, undergo [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions with different alkynes to generate 1,2-oxaphosphete ions, which were isolated and structurally characterized. The strained phosphorus-oxygen heterocycles open to the corresponding heterodiene structure at elevated temperature, which was used to generate six-membered phosphorus heterocycles via hetero Diels-Alder reactions. Insights into the influence of the substituents at the phosphorus center on the energy profile of the oxygen atom transfer reaction were obtained by quantum-chemical calculations.

Efficient Oxidative Resolution of 1-Phenylphosphol-2-Ene and Diels–Alder Synthesis of Enantiopure Bicyclic and Tricyclic P-Stereogenic C-P Heterocycles

1-Phenylphosphol-2-ene 1-oxide is effectively resolved by L-menthyl bromoacetate to afford both SP and RP enantiomers of 1-phenylphosphol-2-ene 1-oxide on a multigram scale. The resolved 1-phenylphosphol-2-ene oxide has been found to undergo face-selective and endo-selective cycloadditions with a series of acyclic and cyclic dienes to produce enantiopure P-stereogenic C-P heterocycles of hexahydrophosphindole and hexahydrobenzophosphindole as well as phospha[5.2.1.02,6]decene and phospha[5.2.2.02,6]undecene structures. Conversions of these cycloadducts to the fully saturated heterocyclic systems as well as to their P (III), P = S, P = Se and P-BH3 derivatives have been demonstrated to occur with retention of configuration and preservation of configurational homogeneity at P. A perplexing case of stereomutation at P during reduction of a tricyclic β-hydroxy phosphine oxide by PhSiH3 at 80 °C has been recorded.

Asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of chiral 1-alkyl-1,2-diphospholes with diphenyldiazomethane

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of chiral 1-alkyl-1,2-diphosphacyclopenta-2,4-dienes ((1-(−)-menthyl)oxymethyl-1,2-diphosphole and 1-(+)-neomenthyl-1,2-diphosphole) with diphenyldiazomethane leads to novel P-chiral bicyclic phosphiranes having six chiral centers. The degree of diastereoselectivity depends on the substituent at phosphorus, and dramatically increases in the case of (+)-neomenthyl group (de up to 71%). DFT calculations indicate that the cycloaddition is thermodynamically controlled.

P-Chiral 1,7-diphosphanorbornenes: from asymmetric phospha-Diels-Alder reactions towards applications in asymmetric catalysis

A straightforward synthesis of P-chiral polycyclic phosphines by an asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of 1-alkyl-1,2-diphospholes and (5R)-(l-menthyloxy)-2(5H)-furanone (MOxF) is presented. The [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of 1,2-diphospholes 1-3 with MOxF (4) proceeded with high diastereoselectivity (de up to 90%) resulting in the corresponding enantiopure anti-endo-1,7-diphosphanorbornenes 5a-7a. The absolute configuration of 5-7 was proved by a variety of 1D/2D NMR correlation methods. The use of the anti-endo-1,7-diphosphanorbornene 5a in the Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation of cinnamyl acetate 8 with cyclic β-ketoesters 9a,b provided up to 52% ee.

Novel enantiopure monophospholes: synthesis, spatial and electronic structure, photophysical characteristics and conjugation effects

A rational and highly efficient method to access lithium 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylphospholide directly from white phosphorus, diphenylacetylene and lithium has been developed.
