Occupational exposure limits: an approach and calculation aid for extended work schedule adjustments

Past reviews of occupational exposure limit (OEL) adjustments have covered both decision logic and calculation methods to derive factors to assure protection of workers on extended (also known as unusual) work shifts. The approaches reviewed included several Haber's rule based methods, several variants of single compartment toxicokinetic (TK) models, and physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling. These models calculate OEL adjustment factors based on the work shift and the uptake and elimination of the toxicant. A key parameter of the TK models is the biologic half-life of the toxicant, but reliable data for the half-life are not available for all substances of concern. A spreadsheet is presented that implements TK calculations, with one of the presented TK calculation alternatives not dependent on half-life data. This half-life data independent approach is suggested as a viable option for situations when the toxicant's half-life is unknown or uncertain.

Formaldehyde as a basis for residential ventilation rates

Traditionally, houses in the US have been ventilated by passive infiltration in combination with active window opening. However in recent years, the construction quality of residential building envelopes has been improved to reduce infiltration, and the use of windows for ventilation also may have decreased due to a number of factors. Thus, there has been increased interest in engineered ventilation systems for residences. The amount of ventilation provided by an engineered system should be set to protect occupants from unhealthy or objectionable exposures to indoor pollutants, while minimizing energy costs for conditioning incoming air. Determining the correct ventilation rate is a complex task, as there are numerous pollutants of potential concern, each having poorly characterized emission rates, and poorly defined acceptable levels of exposure. One ubiquitous pollutant in residences is formaldehyde. The sources of formaldehyde in new houses are reasonably understood, and there is a large body of literature on human health effects. This report examines the use of formaldehyde as a means of determining ventilation rates and uses existing data on emission rates of formaldehyde in new houses to derive recommended levels. Based on current, widely accepted concentration guidelines for formaldehyde, the minimum and guideline ventilation rates for most new houses are 0.28 and 0.5 air changes per hour, respectively.

How to measure and evaluate volatile organic compound emissions from building products. A perspective

The primary emissions of VOCs (e.g. solvents) from building products influence the perceived indoor air quality during the initial decay period. However, secondary emissions will continue thereafter (chemical or physical degradation, e.g. oxidation, hydrolysis, mechanical wear, maintenance), in addition to sorption processes. Emission testing for primary VOC emissions is necessary, but insufficient to characterise the impact of building products in their entire life span on the perceived air quality. Methods to distinguish between the two types of emissions are required. Also, the influence of climate parameters on the emission rates is necessary to know for proper testing. Future product development and selection strategies of new building products should consider the secondary emissions, in addition to the contribution from the use of auxiliary agents for cleaning, maintenance, and other potential impacts either physical or chemical in nature. Some of the requirements for emission testing are discussed in terms of secondary vs. primary emissions in order to develop 'healthier/better' building products for the indoor environment. In addition, some of the assumptions about the possible impact of VOCs on health and comfort in the indoor environment are presented. Odour thresholds for VOCs are one or more orders of magnitude lower than the corresponding airway irritation estimates, and it also appears that chemically non-reactive VOCs are not sufficiently strong irritants to cause airway irritation at concentrations normally encountered indoors. Finally, future requirements for analytical laboratory performances is proposed to accommodate the increasing need to establish which VOCs may be responsible for the perception of odour intensity from building products.
