Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of novel luminescent amorphous POSS-based polysilsesquioxanes (PSQs) with Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions directly integrated in the polysilsesquioxane matrix is presented. Two different Tb3+/Eu3+ molar ratios were applied, with the aim of disclosing the relationships between the nature and loading of the ions and the luminescence properties. Particular attention was given to the investigation of site geometry and hydration state of the metal centers in the inorganic framework, and of the effect of the Tb3+ → Eu3+ energy transfer on the overall optical properties of the co-doped materials. The obtained materials were characterized by high photostability and colors of the emitted light ranging from orange to deep red, as a function of both the Tb3+/Eu3+ molar ratio and the chosen excitation wavelength. A good energy transfer was observed, with higher efficiency displayed when donor/sensitizer concentration was lower than the acceptor/activator concentration. The easiness of preparation and the possibility to finely tune the photoluminescence properties make these materials valid candidates for several applications, including bioimaging, sensors, ratiometric luminescence-based thermometers, and optical components in inorganic or hybrid light-emitting devices.

Abstract
New non-crystallizable low-dispersity star-shaped polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) containing stereoregular cis-tetra(organo)(dimethylsiloxy)cyclotetrasiloxanes containing methyl-, tolyl- and phenyl-substituents at silicon atoms and the mixture of four stereoisomers of tetra[phenyl(dimethylsiloxy)]cyclotetrasiloxane as the cores were synthesized. Their thermal and viscous properties were studied. All synthesized compounds were characterized by a complex of physicochemical analysis methods: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), FT-IR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry in solution, rheometry, and Langmuir trough study.

Abstract
Well-defined and tailor-made spherosilicates and POSS-based (POSS = Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes) (nano)composites with interesting chemical and mechanical properties have applications in the widely-regarded field of innovative biomaterials. They can serve as delivery systems, three-dimensional scaffolds for specific tissue engineering, biomaterials for orthopedic, cardiovascular, and reconstructive surgery, etc. Such organic-inorganic hybrids are much more effective biomaterials than pure polymers, bioglasses, metals, alloys, and ceramics currently used in medical applications and are considered as next-generation systems in innovative medical approaches. This range of applications creates a strong impetus for novel, cheap, and easy-to-scale-up methods for their synthesis. In this review (highlights since 2006), selected biomaterials consisting of various polymeric derivatives such as polymethacrylates, polylactides, polycaprolactones, polyurethanes, etc., which serve as organic side-arms of POSS and can create polymer platforms for precisely localized spherosilicates among organic matrices, are discussed as a new generation of silicon-based biosystems using spherosilicates, promising biomaterials with a particular use in soft- and hard-tissue engineering.

Abstract
Novel octakis-2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl-octasilsesquioxane (POSS-S-OH) as well as heptaisobutyl-2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl-octasilsesquioxane (iBu-POSS-S-OH) were synthesized. POSS structures, bearing both types of groups i.e., 2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl and the vinyl ones, pendant from the octahedral cage are also described. The synthetic pathway involved thiol-ene click reaction of 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (MCH) to octavinyloctasilsesquioxane (POSS-Vi), and heptaisobutylvinyloctasilsesquioxane (iBu-POSS-Vi), in the presence of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile. The functionalized silsesquioxane cages of regular octahedral structure were used further as initiators for ring opening polymerization of L,L-dilactide, catalyzed by tin (II) 2-ethylhexanoate. The polymerization afforded biodegradable hybrid star shape and linear systems with an octasilsesquioxane cage as a core, bearing polylactide arm(s).

Abstract
The mass transport through biocompatible and biodegradable polymeric 3D porous scaffolds may be depleted by non-porous impermeable internal walls. As consequence the concentration of metabolites and growth factors within the scaffold may be heterogeneous leading to different cell fate depending on spatial cell location, and in some cases it may compromise cell survival. In this work, we fabricated polymeric scaffolds with micro- and nano-scale porosity by developing a new technique that couples two conventional scaffold production methods: solvent casting-salt leaching and gas antisolvent precipitation. 10-15 w/w solutions of a hyaluronic benzyl esters (HYAFF11) and poly-(lactic acid) (PLA) were used to fill packed beds of 0.177-0.425 mm NaCl crystals. The polymer precipitation in micro and nano-porous structures between the salt crystals was induced by high-pressure gas, then its flushing extracted the residual solvent. The salt was removed by water-wash. Morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy showed a uniform porosity (~70%) and a high interconnectivity between porous. The polymeric walls were porous themselves counting for 30% of the total porosity. This wall porosity did not lead to a remarkable change in compressive modulus, deformation, and rupture pressure. Scaffold biocompatibility was tested with murine muscle cell line C2C12 for 4 and 7 days. Viability analysis and histology showed that micro- and nano-porous scaffolds are biocompatible and suitable for 3D cell culture promoting cell adhesion on the polymeric wall and allowing their proliferation in layers. Micro- and nano-scale porosities enhance cell migration and growth in the inner part of the scaffold.
