Removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions using tannin-phenolic polymer immobilized on cellulose

Synthesized Copolymer Derivative of Poly(Styrene-alt-Maleic Anhydride) as a New Chelating Resin to Remove Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Solution

Chelating resin as a new copolymer for metal ions removal was prepared using 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) cyclopropane-1,1,2,2-tetracarboxylic acid and 1,2-diaminoethane on the poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride). Parameters of sorption behavior were investigated under various conditions. Kinetics studies revealed that the adsorption process confirmed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and adsorption data were well fitted to Langmuir isotherm.

Adsorption and Removal of Mercury(II) by a Crosslinked Hyperbranched Polymer Modified via Sulfhydryl

In this study, the highly crosslinked hyperbranched polyamide-amines (H-PAMAMs) were first prepared via one-pot methods and then modified with thiourea to synthesize a novel adsorbent containing sulfhydryl groups (CHAP-SH), which was used to adsorb Hg(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption characteristics and mechanism of CHAP-SH for Hg(II) ions were systematically studied. As expected, CHAP-SH exhibited a rapid removal performance toward Hg(II), and the maximum adsorption capacity was 282.74 mg/g at 318 K and pH = 4.5. The whole adsorption behavior could be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson adsorption isotherm models, which reflected that the adsorption process was mainly monolayer chemisorption. Meanwhile, CHAP-SH had strong selectivity for Hg(II) in the presence of multimetal ions, and it had excellent recoverability after five cycles. In order to further elucidate the adsorption mechanism, the adsorbents before and after adsorption were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and the results showed that the nitrogen-containing, oxygen-containing, and sulfur-containing groups in the adsorbent molecule had synergistic complexation with Hg(II). These results indicated that the adsorbents had great potential in the future treatment of aqueous solutions containing Hg(II).

Functionalized Glutathione on Chitosan-Genipin Cross-Linked Beads Used for the Removal of Trace Metals from Water

Functionalized glutathione on chitosan-genipin cross-linked beads (CS-GG) was synthesized and tested as an adsorbent for the removal of Fe(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution. The beads were characterized by several techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), CNS elementary analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The effect of several parameters such as the pH, the temperature, and the contact time was tested to optimize the condition for the adsorption reaction. The beads were incubated in aqueous solutions contaminated with different concentrations of Fe(II) and Cu(II) (under the range concentration from 10 to 400 mg·L-1), and the adsorption capacity was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The adsorption equilibrium was reached after 120 min of incubation under optimal pH 5 for Fe(II) and after 180 min under optimal pH 6 for Cu(II). According to the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacities (q max) for Fe(II) and Cu(II) were 208 mg·g-1 and 217 mg·g-1, respectively. Our results showed that the adsorption efficiency of both metals on CS-GG beads was correlated with the degree of temperature. In addition, the adsorption reaction was spontaneous and endothermic, indicated by the positive values of ΔG 0 and ΔH 0. Therefore, the present study demonstrated that the new synthesized CS-GG beads had a strong adsorption capacity for Fe(II) and Cu(II) and were efficient to remove these trace metals from aqueous solution.
