Abstract
Regioselective derivatization via an organomercury intermediate allowed for the introduction of carboxylic acid functionality into the meta position of the calix[4]arene skeleton. Intramolecular Friedel-Crafts cyclization led to a novel type of calixarene containing a ketone bridging moiety. Subsequent attack of the ketone by organometallic compounds occurred selectively from outside providing tertiary alcohols with the OH group oriented inside the cavity. These compounds can complex neutral molecules both in the solid state (X-ray) and in solution (NMR) using the cooperative effect of hydrogen bonding (OH) and CH-π interactions from within the cavity.

Abstract
The synthesis of A,D-m-xylylene-bridged calix[6]arenes 1-8 functionalized at position 5 of the spacer arm is described. The cone conformation of the new bridged calix[6]arenes has been established by (1)H and (13)C NMR. The X-ray structure of compound 6 confirmed the cone conformation also in the solid state. Compounds 9 and 10, which are branched-like structures, were obtained by reductive amination of 5-amino-A,D-m-xylylene-bridged-B,C,E,F-tetra-O-ethylcalix[6]arene 7 with diformyl calix[4]arene and CTV derivatives 22 and 24, respectively.

Abstract
The bonding property of the CH/pi interaction in organic crystals has been investigated by the means of a periodic ab initio method. The energy of the CH(sp(2))/pi interaction in crystals, estimated with periodic RHF/6-21G*, showed a reasonable attractive CH(sp(2))/pi interaction owing to a cooperative effect, whereas the results calculated with RHF/cc-pVDZ indicate a negligibly small or repulsive interaction. The relative contribution of the CH(sp(2))/pi interaction to the column packing energy was found to be roughly half of the energy of a conventional hydrogen bond. The calculation of the charge distributions on the aromatic rings participating in the CH(sp(2))/pi interaction in crystals revealed that the atoms were more ionic than those in the gas phase. These theoretical calculations suggest a hydrogen-bonding characteristic for the CH(sp(2))/pi interaction in crystals, which does not occur in solution nor gas phase. We present computational evidence of the existence of the cooperative effect of CH(sp(2))/pi interaction in crystals.

Abstract
Wide rim tetraurea derivatives (2a,b) have been prepared from a calix[4]arene rigidified in the cone conformation by two diethyleneglycol ether bridges between adjacent oxygens. In comparison to the analogous tetraurea derivatives (3a,b) of a tetrapentoxy calix[4]arene, 2a,b show an increased thermodynamic stability in mixtures of CDCl(3) and DMSO-d(6). Their kinetic stability as expressed by the rate of guest exchange (benzene or cyclohexane against the solvent benzene-d(6)) is also strongly increased by factors of 30-38. Noticeable differences for the inclusion of selected guests are found.

Abstract
Aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction of cyclotriguaiacylene 1 with fluorobenzene derivatives bearing electron-withdrawing groups X (CHO, COCH(3), CN, NO(2)) in the para position gives a series of cyclotriveratrylene derivatives (3a-d), where the X substituents can be transformed to hydrogen-bond donor groups to afford new CTV-based heteroditopic receptors. The substituents of compounds 3a-d favor the facile demethylation reaction of the CTV derivatives. Attempts to perform alkylation reactions on derivatives (8c,d) evidenced the formation of a stereoisomeric mixture of symmetrical and unsymmetrical compounds.
