Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides with unique conical structure enabling host-guest inclusion complexes. However, virgin CDs sufferfrom low solubility, lack of functional groups and its inability to strong complexation with the guests. One of the most efficient ways to improve the properties of cyclodextrins is the synthesis of polycyclodextrins. Generally, there are two types of polycyclodextrins: 1) polymers containing CD units as parts of the main backbone; and 2) polymers with CD units as side chains. These polycyclodextrins are produced (i) from direct copolymerization of virgin cyclodextrins or cyclodextrins derivatives with various monomers including isocyanates, epoxides, carboxylic acids, anhydrides, acrylates, acrylamides and fluorinated aromatic compounds, or (ii) by post-functionalization of other polymers with CDs or CD derivatives.. By selecting the proper derivatives of CDs and controlling the polymerization, polycyclodextrins with linear, hyperbranched, and crosslinked structures have been synthesized. Polycyclodextrins have found significant applications in numerous areas, as adsorbents for removal of organic pollutants, carriers in gene/drug delivery, and for preparation of supramolecular based hydrogels. The focus of this review paper is placed on the synthesis, characterization, and applications of CDs so as to highlight challenges as well as the promising features of the future ahead of material developments based on CDs.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) can form inclusion complexes with a wide variety of molecules making them very attractive in different areas, such as pharmaceutics, biochemistry, food chemistry and textile. In this communication we will report on the physico-chemical characterization of cellulose modified with CDs by means of infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), cross polarization magic angle spinning solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (CP-MAS NMR), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Both CP-MAS NMR and FTIR indicate that CDs are chemically attached to cellulose backbone through the formation of ester bonds. Furthermore, the CD-grafted cellulose was dissolved in a "superphosphoric" acid solution but, despite the increase of hydrophilicity due to the modification, POM revealed that grafted cellulose was less soluble when compared to the unmodified polymer. The formation of a complex CD-cellulose network is suggested.

Abstract
Children constitute the most challenging population in anti-HIV/AIDS pharmacotherapy. Efavirenz (EFV; aqueous solubility 4 µg/ml, bioavailability 40–45%) is a first-line agent in the pediatric therapeutic cocktail. The liquid formulation of EFV is not available worldwide, preventing appropriate dose adjustment and more convenient administration. The bioavailability of liquid EFV is lower than that of the solid formulation. Improving the bioavailability of the drug would reduce the cost of treatment and enable less affluent patients to access this drug. Aim: To encapsulate EFV in polymeric micelles to improve the aqueous solubility and the the oral bioavailability of the drug. Methods: EFV was incorporated into the core of linear and branched poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide) block copolymer micelles. The size and size distribution of the drug-loaded aggregates were characterized by dynamic light scattering and the morphology by transmission electron microscopy. The bioavailability of the EFV-loaded micellar system (20 mg/ml) was assessed in male Wistar rats (40 mg/kg) and compared to that of a suspension prepared with the content of EFV capsules in 1.5% carboxymethylcellulose PBS solution (pH 5.0), and an EFV solution in a medium-chain triglyceride (Miglyol® 812). Results: This work demonstrates that the encapsulation of EFV, which is poorly water soluble, into polymeric micelles of different poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide) block copolymers significantly improves the oral bioavailability of the drug, and reduces the interindividual variability. Conclusion: This strategy appears a very promising one towards the development of a liquid aqueous EFV formulation for the improved pediatric HIV pharmacotherapy.
