Abstract
Cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) encapsulates adamantyl and trimethylsilyl substituents of positively charged guests in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Unlike in water or deuterium oxide, addition of a selection of alkali and alkali-earth cations with van der Waals radii between 1.0 and 1.4 Å (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+ and Eu3+) to the CB[7]/guest complexes triggers their cation-mediated trimerization, a process that is very slow on the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) time scale. Smaller (Li+, Mg2+) or larger cations (Rb+, Cs+ or NH4+) are inert. The trimers display extensive CH-O interactions between the equatorial and pseudo-equatorial hydrogens of CB[7] and the carbonyl rim of the neighboring CB[7] unit in the trimer, and a deeply nested cation between the three interacting carbonylated CB[7] rims; a counteranion is likely perched in the shallow cavity formed by the three outer walls of CB[7] in the trimer. Remarkably, a guest must occupy the cavity of CB[7] for trimerization to take place. Using a combination of semi-empirical and density functional theory techniques in conjunction with continuum solvation models, we showed that trimerization is favored in DMSO, and not in water, because the penalty for the partial desolvation of three of the six CB[7] portals upon aggregation into a trimer is less unfavorable in DMSO compared to water.

Abstract
Polymer brushes are densely grafted, chain end-tethered assemblies of polymers that can be produced via surface-initiated polymerization. Typically, this is accomplished using initiators or chain transfer agents that are covalently attached to the substrate. This manuscript reports an alternative route towards polymer brushes, which involves the use of non-covalent cucurbit[7]uril-adamantane host-guest interactions to surface-immobilize initiators for atom transfer radical polymerization. These non-covalent initiators can be used for the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of a variety of water-soluble methacrylate monomers to generate supramolecular polymer brushes with film thicknesses of more than 100 nm. The non-covalent nature of the initiator also allows facile access to patterned polymer brushes, which can be produced in straightforward fashion by drop-casting a solution of the initiator-modified guest molecules onto a substrate that presents the cucurbit[7]uril host.

Abstract
An iminium dication 1 was designed as a high-affinity and easily removable guest for cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]). X-ray crystallographic analysis shows that maximized N+···O═C ion-dipole interactions and perfect packing coefficient are responsible for the high affinity of 1 for CB[7] (Ka > 1011 M-1). Under alkaline conditions, included 1 in CB[7]·1 is hydrolyzed into 2,6-adamantanedione and pyrrolidine that can be fully removed by further extraction, enabling the recycling of CB[7] materials.

Abstract
We report preparation of (bis)aniline ligand 4 which contains a central viologen binding domain and its subcomponent self-assembly with aldehyde 5 and Fe(OTf)2 in CH3CN to yield tetrahedral assembly 6. Complexation of ligand 4 with CB[7] in the form of CB[7]•4•2PF6 allows the preparation of assembly 7 which contains an average of 1.95 (range 1-3) mechanically interlocked CB[7] units. Assemblies 6 and 7 are hydrolytically unstable in water due to their imine linkages. Redesign of our system with water stable 2,2'-bipyridine end groups was realized in the form of ligands 11 and 16 which also contain a central viologen binding domain. Self-assembly of 11 with Fe(NTf2)2 gave tetrahedral MOP 12 as evidenced by 1H NMR, DOSY, and mass spectrometric analysis. In contrast, isomeric ligand 16 underwent self-assembly with Fe(OTf)2 to give cubic assembly 17. Precomplexation of ligands 11 and 16 with CB[7] gave the acetonitrile soluble CB[7]•11•2PF6 and CB[7]•16•2PF6 complexes. Self-assembly of CB[7]•11•2PF6 with Fe(OTf)2 gave tetrahedron 13 which contains on average 1.8 mechanically interlocked CB[7] units as determined by 1H NMR, DOSY, and ESI-MS analysis. Self-assembly of CB[7]•16•2PF6 with Fe(OTf)2 gave cube 13 which contains 6.59 mechanically interlocked CB[7] units as determined by 1H NMR and DOSY measurements.

Immobilization of molecular catalysts on electrode surfaces using host-guest interactions. Nat Chem 2021; 13:523-529. Abstract
Anchoring molecular catalysts on electrode surfaces combines the high selectivity and activity of molecular systems with the practicality of heterogeneous systems. Molecular catalysts, however, are far less stable than traditional heterogeneous electrocatalysts, and therefore a method to easily replace anchored molecular catalysts that have degraded could make such electrosynthetic systems more attractive. Here we applied a non-covalent 'click' chemistry approach to reversibly bind molecular electrocatalysts to electrode surfaces through host-guest complexation with surface-anchored cyclodextrins. The host-guest interaction is remarkably strong and enables the flow of electrons between the electrode and the guest catalyst. Electrosynthesis in both organic and aqueous media was demonstrated on metal oxide electrodes, with stability on the order of hours. The catalytic surfaces can be recycled by controlled release of the guest from the host cavities and the readsorption of fresh guest.

Abstract
High-affinity guests have been reported for the macrocyclic host cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), enabling widespread applications, but hindering CB[7] materials from being returned to their guest-free state for reuse. Here, we present polyhedral boron clusters (carboranes) as strongly binding, yet easily removable, guests for CB[7]. Aided by a Pd-catalyzed coupling of an azide anion, we prepared boron-functionalized 9-amino-ortho-carborane that binds to CB[7] with a Ka ≈ 1010 M-1. Upon basic treatment, ortho-carborane readily undergoes deboronation to yield anionic nido-carborane, a poor guest for CB[7], facilitating recovery of guest-free CB[7]. We showcase the utility of the modified ortho-carborane guest by recycling a CB[7]-functionalized resin. With this report, we introduce stimuli-responsive decomplexation as an additional consideration in the design of high-affinity host-guest complexes.

Abstract
(Ferrocenylmethyl)methylammonium (1H(+)) is an excellent cationic guest for inclusion complexation by the cucurbit[7]uril host. However, deprotonation of the guest leads to a decrease of 14.8 kJ mol(-1) in the overall stability of its inclusion complex, and one-electron oxidation of the guest's ferrocene residue further diminishes the complex stability by another 12.3 kJ mol(-1). Overall, guest deprotonation followed by its oxidation constitutes an accessible method to lower the equilibrium association constant for the CB7·1H(+) complex by more than 4 orders of magnitude.
