Validity and interrater/intrarater reliability of the Turkish version of the postural assessment scale for stroke patients (PASS-Turk)

Immediate effects of trunk Kinesio Taping® on functional parameters in the acute stage of patients with mild stroke: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Improving early trunk control, balance, and sitting activity following acute stroke is critical for functional prognosis.

PURPOSE

To compare the immediate efficacy of Kinesio Taping® (KT) application on anterior and posterior trunk muscles in terms of improving trunk control, balance, and sit-to-stand performance in the acute stage of stroke.

METHODS

Sixty-nine patients with acute mild stroke were allocated to the anterior KT group (AKT) (age = 65.95 ± 9.67; 12 females, 11 males; Modified Rankin Score = 3), posterior KT group (PKT) (age = 65.39 ± 10.39; 10 females, 13 males; Modified Rankin Score = 3), and control group (CG) (age = 65.34 ± 8.91; 11 females, 12 males; Modified Rankin Score = 2). Trunk control, balance, and sit-to-stand performance were assessed at the baseline and after 45 minutes and 48 hours post-KT. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA.

RESULTS

All outcome measures scores improved in all groups significantly after 48 hours (p < .001). A significant improvement after 45 minutes was only seen in trunk control compared to the CG (p < .001; d = 1.32 for AKT and p = .038; d = 0.75 for PKT). Trunk control, balance, and sit-to-stand performance improved in both AKT and PKT compared to the CG at 48 hours post-taping. Trunk control (p < .001; d = 0.26) and balance (p < .001; d = 0.72) results were in favor of the AKT, while sit-to-stand performance results did not make a difference between KT groups (p = .335; d = 0.47).

CONCLUSION

KT application on anterior or posterior trunk muscles was effective for improving trunk control, balance, and sit-to-stand performance in acute stage of stroke in the short term. KT application on anterior trunk muscles had the advantage of improving trunk control and balance.

Validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Ottawa Sitting Scale in patients with acute stroke

PURPOSE

To investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Ottawa Sitting Scale (OSS-T) in patients with acute stroke.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) were used to determine the validity of the OSS-T. The OSS-T was re-applied by the same rater after an interval of 7 days to determine the reliability. To test inter-rater reliability, the evaluation was repeated by a second rater 1 day after the first evaluation. Reliability was quantified using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), and validity was assessed by correlating the OSS-T scores with the results of the other measures.

RESULTS

The ICC of the total OSS-T score for inter-rater reliability was 0.996 and for intra-rater reliability, it was 0.951. The Cronbach's α coefficient used to determine internal consistency was 0.980, which indicates excellent reliability. A strong positive correlation was found between OSS-T and TIS (rho = 0.861, p < 0.001), and between OSS-T and BBS (rho = 0.875, p < 0.001). An evident 2-factor structure was shown by the results of the factor analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study indicated that the OSS-T has strong measurement properties, making it a valid and reliable tool for research and clinical practice in patients with acute stroke.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONIndependent sitting function is an important indicator of functional recovery and discharge from hospital.Unlike other sitting balance tools, the Ottawa Sitting Scale can even categorize patients with low balance reserve by applying all the items with and without foot support.The Turkish version of the Ottawa Sitting Scale is a valid and reliable tool to evaluate sitting balance in patients with acute stroke.

Foot and ankle deformities in stroke: relationship with ambulation, balance, and daily living activities: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Ankle-foot deformities play a critical role in functional capacity and therefore activities of daily living in stroke patients.

AIM

This is the first study to evaluate all foot deformities in stroke patients together. The primary aim of this study is to determine the frequency of ankle-foot deformities in stroke patients. The secondary aim is to investigate the relationships between ankle-foot deformities and ambulation, postural control, balance, spasticity, and activities of daily living.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The Functional Ambulation Classification was used to assess ambulation status, Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients was used to assess postural control and balance. Lower extremity spasticity was evaluated with Modified Ashworth Scale. Activities of daily living were evaluated with Barthel Index.

RESULTS

Ankle-foot deformity was detected in 77 (42%) of 184 cases. The incidence of pes equinovarus was 48%, pes equinus was seen in 22%, claw toe in 19.5%, and pes varus in 10.4%. Pes equinovarus and claw toe were seen together in 8 cases. In the group with ankle-foot deformity, the disease duration was longer and the rate of spasticity in the lower extremity was statistically higher (p = 0.29, p = 0.023). There was no difference in Functional Ambulation Classification, Barthel Index, and Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients scores between patients with or without ankle-foot deformity (p = 0.811, 0.321, 0.385).

CONCLUSION

It is important to detect ankle-foot deformities in stroke patients. Ankle-foot deformities are associated with spasticity in patients with stroke and are an important factor to be considered when determining the rehabilitation program.
