Abstract
Chiral glutamide-derived lipids form self-assembled fibrous molecular gels that can be used as HPLC organic phases. In this study, HPLC separation efficiency was improved through the addition of branched amphiphilic glutamide lipids to the side chains of a terminally immobilized flexible polymer backbone. Poly(4-vinylpyridine) with a trimethoxysilyl group at one end was grafted onto the surface of porous silica particles (Sil-VP15, polymerization degree = 15), and the pyridyl side chains were quaternized with a glutamide lipid having a bromide group (BrG). Elemental analysis indicated that the total amount of the organic phase of the prepared stationary phase (Sil-VPG15) was 38.0 wt%, and the quaternization degree of the pyridyl groups was determined to be 32.5%. Differential scanning calorimetric analysis of a methanol suspension of Sil-VPG15 indicated that the G moieties formed a highly ordered structure below the phase transition temperature even on the silica surface, and the ordered G moieties exhibited a gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition. Compared with a commercially available octadecylated silica column, the Sil-VPG15 stationary phase showed high selectivity toward polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and particularly excellent separations were obtained for geometrical and positional isomers. Sil-VPG15 also showed highly selective separation for phenol derivatives, and bio-related molecules containing phenolic groups such as steroids were successfully separated. These separation abilities are probably due to multiple interactions between the elutes and the highly ordered functional groups, such as the pyridinium and amide groups, on the highly ordered molecular gel having self-assembling G moieties.

Abstract
This paper presents a new type of black organic material-porous silica composite providing an extremely highly selective adsorption surface. This black composite was prepared by lamination on nano-sized pores with a carbon-like, π-extended structure, which can be converted via the on-site polymerization of 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene with a triazinane derivative and a thermally induced condensation reaction with denitrification. This bottom-up fabrication method on porous materials had the great advantage of maintaining the pore characteristics of a raw porous material, but also the resultant black surface exhibited an extremely high molecular-shape selectivity; for example, that for trans- and cis-stilbenes reached 14.0 with the black layer-laminated porous silica, whereas it was below 1.2 with simple hydrophobized silica.

Abstract
The interaction thermodynamics of the thrombin receptor agonistic peptide (TRAP-1), H-Ser-Phe-Leu-Leu-Arg-Asn-Pro-OH, and a set of alanine scan substitution peptides, have been investigated with an n-octadecylacrylic polymer-bonded porous silica (Sil-ODA18) and water-acetonitrile mobile phases at temperatures ranging from 5 to 80 °C in 5 °C increments. The retention of these peptides on the Sil-ODA18 stationary phase decreased as the water content in the mobile phase was lowered from 80% (v/v) to ca. 45% (v/v) and reached a minimum value for each peptide at a specific water-acetonitrile composition. Further decreases in the water content of the mobile phase led to increased retention. The magnitude of the changes in enthalpy of interaction, Δ H a s s o c 0 , changes in entropy of interaction, Δ S a s s o c 0 , and changes in heat capacity, Δ C p 0 , were found to be dependent on the molecular properties of the mobile phase, the temperature, the structure/mobility of the stationary phase, and the conformation and solvation state of the peptides. With water-rich mobile phases, the retention behaviour of the TRAP analogues was dominated by enthalpic processes, consistent with the participation of strong hydrogen bonding effects, but became dominated by entropic effects with acetonitrile-rich mobile phases as the temperature was increased. These changes in the retention behaviour of these TRAP peptides are consistent with the generation of water or acetonitrile clusters in the mobile phase depending on the volume fractions of the organic solvent as the Sil-ODA18 stationary phase transitions from its crystalline to its isotropic state.

Abstract
2-(2,3-anthracenedicarboximido)cyclohexane derivatives (AC) have been known as the evolutionary diastereomerizing reagents for enantiomer discrimination in HPLC with ODS. However, a substantial separation of diastereomers can be observed only at lower temperatures, such as -40 degrees C. Therefore, in this work, poly(octadecyl acrylate)-grafted silica, ODAn was applied as an alternative stationary phase to ODS for the separation of AC-derived diastereomers. As a result, complete separation was achieved even under the conventional condition: for example, methanol as the mobile phase and 0 degrees C as the column temperature. An investigation on the temperature dependency of the selectivity demonstrated that ODAn shows a remarkable increase in selectivity at temperatures below 30 degrees C, which almost agreed with the peak-top temperature of the endothermic peak in a DSC thermogram for ODA35 immersed in a mobile phase. The better separation would be derived from a highly ordered structure of ODAn and a carbonyl-pi interaction with AC-derived diastereomers.

Abstract
Poly(octadecylacrylate) having plural trimethoxysilyl groups in the side chain (co-ODA(n)) was newly synthesized and immobilized onto silica through these groups. The liquid chromatographic behavior of silica-supported co-ODA(n) (Sil-co-ODA(n)) was investigated and compared with that of Sil-ODA(n), in which poly(octadecylacrylate) was immobilized through a terminal trimethoxy group at one side of the polymer main chain. Sil-co-ODA(n) showed higher selectivity for molecular shape, especially molecular planarity of PAHs than Sil-ODA(n).

Abstract
A new approach for the synthesis of double-alkylated L-glutamide-derived stationary phases to use in RP-HPLC is described. TEM observation of lipid distearylglutamide (DSG) showed the formation of fibrous aggregates in methanol or in chloroform through intermolecular hydrogen bonding among the amide moieties while dibutylglutamide (DBG) cannot aggregate in aqueous or organic media due to its lower order of short alkyl chain. DSG and DBG were covalently bonded to silica via amino-propyl linkages. Lipid membrane analogues (e.g., DSG) attached to the silica surface have been found in noncrystalline and solid states and can form supramolecular assemblies with specific properties based on their highly ordered structures in aqueous and organic media. 13C CP/MAS NMR and suspension (in methanol)-state 1H NMR, elemental analysis, and DSC measurements were used to characterize Sil-DSG and were compared with the three other octadecyl phases, i.e., monomeric C18, polymeric C18, and silica grafted poly(octadecyl acrylate) Sil-ODA25. The chromatographic behavior of the new RP material was investigated using detailed retention studies of planar and nonplanar polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nonpolar aromatic positional isomers. Aspects of shape selectivity were also evaluated with Standard Reference Materials 869a, Column Selectivity Test Mixture for Liquid Chromatography. Detailed chromatographic study revealed that Sil-DSG showed extremely enhanced molecular shape selectivity compared with the other phases investigated. The higher molecular shape selectivity obtained by Sil-DSG can be explained by a carbonyl pi (present in lipid-grafted stationary phases)-benzene pi (present in guest PAHs) interaction mechanism, and these interactions are more effective for ordered carbonyl groups.

Abstract
Dialkyl L-glutamide-derived lipids have been found to form supramolecular assemblies and to show specific properties based on their highly ordered structures in aqueous and organic media. To use these unique properties to create molecular recognition systems, dioctadecyl L-glutamide-derived lipid-grafted porous silica particles (Sil-DSG) were newly prepared and used as a stationary phase in reversed phase liquid chromatography. Compared with conventional ODS (octadecylated silica), the Sil-DSG column showed remarkably higher selectivity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Especially, Sil-DSG recognized the molecular linearity and planarity of PAHs. Suspension state 1H NMR and 13C CP/MAS-NMR spectroscopies showed that the alkyl chains on the Sil-DSG are in gauche form and their mobility is strongly restricted at room temperature. This paper discusses higher selectivity of Sil-DSG with a carbonyl pi-benzene pi interactions.

Abstract
Poly(L-alanine)-grafted porous silica (Sil-Ala22) was prepared by polymerization of N-carboxyanhydride of L-alanine initiated by 3-aminopropylated silica. Its selective interaction with aromatic guest molecules was evaluated by the retention time in liquid chromatography using the column packed with Sil-Ala22. Sil-Ala22 showed a specific selective retention with discriminating molecular shapes, such as molecular length, linearity and planarity. This selectivity can be explained by a multiple pi-pi interaction with the carbonyl groups one dimensionally-aligned on the rigid beta-form structure in the peptide main chain. Chiral separation with Sil-Ala22 was also described.

Abstract
Poly(octadecyl acrylate) with a terminal reactive group was synthesized by radical telomerization in various solvents. The polymers were grafted onto porous silica for use in RP-HPLC, and the molecular recognition ability was investigated along with the selectivity for the structural isomers of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The mechanism of selectivity was also investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and NMR spectroscopic observations.

Abstract
Silica-supported comb-shaped polymer (Sil-ODA18) provided a specific selectivity towards aromatic and non-aromatic solutes. Selectivity of Sil-ODA18 and ODS (polymeric and monomeric) columns towards polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and geometric isomers have been discussed in respect of molecular shapes and sizes. The retention versatility of this phase arises from the orientation change on transition from the ordered crystalline to the less ordered non-crystalline state. Selectivity in the crystalline and non-crystalline regions of Sil-ODA18 is similar to that of polymeric and monomeric ODS phases, respectively. Sil-ODA18 column also exhibited the characteristic temperature dependency of liquid-crystalline phases, i.e., an increase in retention with increasing temperature on transition from crystalline to isotropic state.
