Oxygen release compound as a chemical treatment for nutrient rich estuary sediments and water

Sulphate radical oxidation of benzophenone: kinetics, mechanisms and influence of water matrix anions

Benzophenone (BP) is an emerging contaminant that is widely distributed in soil, groundwater, sediment and surface water. In this study, the degradation kinetics, mechanisms, and influence of anions on thermally activated persulphate (TAP) oxidation of BP were systematically investigated. BP degradation was promoted by elevated temperature. The BP degradation data fitted well to the Arrhenius equation with calculated activation energy of 122.8 kJ/mol. BP degradation was also promoted by alkaline pH and high persulphate concentrations. Radical scavenging experiments suggested that both SO₄^•- and HO^• were involved in BP oxidation. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS) identified six degradation intermediates. Based on these results, two possible reaction pathways were proposed. Water matrix anions had complex impacts on BP degradation by TAP. Cl^- had dual effects on the reaction: low concentration promoted it while high concentration inhibited it. Br^- strongly suppressed the reaction. SO₄^2- and NO₃^- did not affect the reaction. Overall, this study shows that thermally activated persulphate can effectively remove BP and water matrix anions greatly influence the reaction.

Integrated electrokinetic processes for the remediation of phthalate esters in river sediments: A mini-review

Concerning the contamination of phthalate esters (PAEs) in river sediments, this mini-review introduces four recently reported novel "integrated electrokinetic (EK) processes" for the remediation purpose, namely two combined technologies of the EK process and advanced oxidation process (EK-AOP Processes) and two combined technologies of the EK process and biological process (EK-BIO Processes). The following is a comprehensive summary for these remediation processes: (1) the EK process coupled with nano-Fe₃O₄/S₂O₈^2- oxidation process - Test results have shown that nanoscale Fe₃O₄ played a significant role in activating persulfate oxidation. Even a recalcitrant compound like di(2‑ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), its concentration in test sediment was reduced to 1.97 mg kg^-1, far below the regulatory levels set by Taiwan EPA; (2) the EK process integrated with a novel Fenton-like process catalyzed by nanoscale schwertmannite (nano-SHM) - Test results have revealed that simultaneous injection of nano-SHM slurry and H₂O₂ into the anode reservoir and sediment compartment is a good practice. 70-99% in removal efficiency was obtained for various target PAEs; (3) enhanced in situ bioremediation coupled with the EK process for promoting the growth of intrinsic microorganisms by adding H₂O₂ as an oxygen release compound (ORC) - Test results have demonstrated that an intermittent mode of injecting lab-prepared ORC directly into the contaminant zone would be beneficial to the growth of intrinsic microorganisms in test sediment for in situ bioremediation of target PAEs; and (4) coupling of a second-generation ORC (designated 2G-ORC) with the EK-biological process - Test results have proved that 2G-ORC is long-lasting and can be directly utilized as the carbon source and oxygen source for microbial growth resulting in an enhanced biodegradation of PAEs. Except DEHP having a residual concentration of 4 μg kg^-1, all other target PAEs in test sediment were totally removed by this novel combined remediation process.

In situ remediation of contaminated marinesediment: an overview

Sediment tends to accumulate inorganic and persistent hydrophobic organic contaminants representing one of the main sinks and sources of pollution. Generally, contaminated sediment poses medium- and long-term risks to humans and ecosystem health; dredging activities or natural resuspension phenomena (i.e., strongly adverse weather conditions) can remobilize pollution releasing it into the water column. Thus, ex situ traditional remediation activities (i.e., dredging) can be hazardous compared to in situ techniques that try to keep to a minimum sediment mobilization, unless dredging is compulsory to reach a desired bathymetric level. We reviewed in situ physico-chemical (i.e., active mixing and thin capping, solidification/stabilization, chemical oxidation, dechlorination, electrokinetic separation, and sediment flushing) and bio-assisted treatments, including hybrid solutions (i.e., nanocomposite reactive capping, bioreactive capping, microbial electrochemical technologies). We found that significant gaps still remain into the knowledge about the application of in situ contaminated sediment remediation techniques from the technical and the practical viewpoint. Only activated carbon-based technologies are well developed and currently applied with several available case studies. The environmental implication of in situ remediation technologies was only shortly investigated on a long-term basis after its application, so it is not clear how they can really perform.

Electrolysis-driven bioremediation of crude oil-contaminated marine sediments

Bioremediation is an effective technology to tackle crude oil spill disasters, which takes advantage of the capacity of naturally occurring microorganisms to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons under a range of environmental conditions. The enzymatic process of breaking down oil is usually more rapid in the presence of oxygen. However, in contaminated sediments, oxygen levels are typically too low to sustain the rapid and complete biodegradation of buried hydrocarbons. Here, we explored the possibility to electrochemically manipulate the redox potential of a crude oil-contaminated marine sediment in order to establish, in situ, conditions that are conducive to contaminants biodegradation by autochthonous microbial communities. The proposed approach is based on the exploitation of low-voltage (2V) seawater electrolysis to drive oxygen generation (while minimizing chlorine evolution) on Dimensionally Stable Anodes (DSA) placed within the contaminated sediment. Results, based on a laboratory scale setup with chronically polluted sediments spiked with crude oil, showed an increased redox potential and a decreased pH in the vicinity of the anode of 'electrified' treatments, consistent with the occurrence of oxygen generation. Accordingly, hydrocarbons biodegradation was substantially accelerated (up to 3-times) compared to 'non-electrified' controls, while sulfate reduction was severely inhibited. Intermittent application of electrolysis proved to be an effective strategy to minimize the energy requirements of the process, without adversely affecting degradation performance. Taken as a whole, this study suggests that electrolysis-driven bioremediation could be a sustainable technology for the management of contaminated sediments.

The "Oil-Spill Snorkel": an innovative bioelectrochemical approach to accelerate hydrocarbons biodegradation in marine sediments

This study presents the proof-of-concept of the “Oil-Spill Snorkel”: a novel bioelectrochemical approach to stimulate the oxidative biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in sediments. The “Oil-Spill Snorkel” consists of a single conductive material (the snorkel) positioned suitably to create an electrochemical connection between the anoxic zone (the contaminated sediment) and the oxic zone (the overlying O₂-containing water). The segment of the electrode buried within the sediment plays a role of anode, accepting electrons deriving from the oxidation of contaminants. Electrons flow through the snorkel up to the part exposed to the aerobic environment (the cathode), where they reduce oxygen to form water. Here we report the results of lab-scale microcosms setup with marine sediments and spiked with crude oil. Microcosms containing one or three graphite snorkels and controls (snorkel-free and autoclaved) were monitored for over 400 days. Collectively, the results of this study confirmed that the snorkels accelerate oxidative reactions taking place within the sediment, as documented by a significant 1.7-fold increase (p = 0.023, two-tailed t-test) in the cumulative oxygen uptake and 1.4-fold increase (p = 0.040) in the cumulative CO₂ evolution in the microcosms containing three snorkels compared to snorkel-free controls. Accordingly, the initial rate of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) degradation was also substantially enhanced. Indeed, while after 200 days of incubation a negligible degradation of TPH was noticed in snorkel-free controls, a significant reduction of 12 ± 1% (p = 0.004) and 21 ± 1% (p = 0.001) was observed in microcosms containing one and three snorkels, respectively. Although, the “Oil-Spill Snorkel” potentially represents a groundbreaking alternative to more expensive remediation options, further research efforts are needed to clarify factors and conditions affecting the snorkel-driven biodegradation processes and to identify suitable configurations for field applications.

Nitrogen and phosphorus removal using a novel integrated system of natural zeolite and lime

Nitrogen and phosphorus can cause eutrophication problems in receiving waters. These nutrients can be eliminated by different wastewater treatments but they tend to be costly or require complex operations. With these reasons in mind, this work set out to study the behavior of a novel combined or integrated system with zeolite and lime for the removal of these chemical species. With the integrated treatment, excellent removals-98 % NH(+) (4), 100 % total phosphorus (TP), 79 % chemical oxygen demand (COD), 71 % BOD(5), 99 % of total suspended solids (TSS) and 100 % of fecal coliforms-were obtained. A sludge production of 4.4 % and 4.8 % of the wastewater total volume treated with lime was achieved. The final liquid effluent of the integrated system of natural zeolite and lime had a composition which was suitable for its discharge into sewerage systems and marine or continental waters (according to Chilean regulations), as far as the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and total coliforms were concerned. Validated curves with their corresponding equations were obtained in this study for the removal of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus. These equations can theoretically be applied to estimate the removal of both parameters in studies or practical applications undertaken with operating conditions similar to those used in this work.
