Defluoridation of synthetic and industrial wastewater by using acidic activated alumina adsorbent: characterization and optimization by response surface methodology

Efficient removal of fluoride on aluminum modified activated carbon: an adsorption behavioral study and application to remediation of ground water

In recent times, ground water contamination by toxic elements is of great concern and it is to be addressed for consumption of human, animal, and plant growth. In this context, we have synthesized an adsorbent by modifying commercially available activated carbon with aluminum and tested for de-fluoridation studies. The activity results suggested that the optimized adsorbent is highly efficient in removing the fluoride from ground water. Adsorption maxima are obtained over a wide pH range from 4 to 9, with a contact time of 15 minutes at a dosage of 4 g/L. The results also revealed that the synthesized adsorbent is suitable for application in ground water without any pH adjustment and has exhibited 85%-95% tolerance for common anions in the range of 100-500 mg/L. Equilibrium adsorption isotherm models as well as kinetics of adsorption were applied for the system. An adsorption capacity of 20.4 mg/g and fast kinetics observed are most favorable for defluoridation. Reuse of adsorbent over repeated cycles was investigated. Residual amount of aluminum in treated water is found to be negligible. The removal of toxic elements like Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, As, and Se under the optimized experimental conditions has also been investigated. Al-AC found to be a highly promising material for removal of fluoride and toxic metals from drinking water.

Biogas and calcite handling in calcium fluoride precipitation from aqueous solution guided by thermodynamic simulation with PHREEQC

In this innovative study, biogas has been associated with calcium carbonate [CaCO₃] to promote the precipitation of fluorite, aiming at the treatment of wastewater with high content of fluoride. The work associates distinct sources of calcium and CO₂ for the precipitation of fluorite according to previous simulation with the free software PHREEQC. Considering the reaction at equilibrium, the minimal predicted Ca dosage was 215 mg/L, lower than the 430 mg/L that was experimentally determined, independent of Ca source. The simultaneous use of CaCO₃ and CO₂ from distinct gas sources (pure CO₂, 1:1 CO₂:N₂, and biogas) exhibited high performance permitting the reduction of fluoride content from 134 to 10 mg/L, with low gas consumption. The biogas consumption of 66.0 mmol/L, equivalent to 33.4 mmol/L of CO₂ (1.47 kg_CO2/m³_{treated wastewater}) was predicted, indicating that the biogas storage bag of 700 L would be able to treat 469 L of wastewater. Furthermore, the inert fraction of biogas (CH₄) did not impact the reaction and it may be used after the reaction as an alternative source of power, equivalent to 8.25 kWh/m³_{treated wastewater}. Final solids were composed by fluorite and non-dissolved calcite, confirming the predictions obtained by PHREEQC.

Enhanced Defluoridation of Water Using Zirconium-Coated Pumice in Fixed-Bed Adsorption Columns

Millions of people across the globe suffer from health issues related to high fluoride levels in drinking water. The purpose of this study was to test modified pumice as an adsorbent for the purification of fluoride-containing waters. The adsorption of fluoride onto zirconium-coated pumice (Zr–Pu) adsorbent was examined in fixed-bed adsorption columns. The coating of zirconium on the surface of VPum was revealed by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-EOS), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques. The degree of surface modification with the enhanced porosity of Zr–Pu was evident from the recorded scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis confirmed the enhancement of the specific surface area of VPum after modification. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) examinations of VPum and Zr–Pu before and after adsorption did not reveal any significant spectrum changes. The pH drift method showed that VPum and Zr–Pu have positive charges at pH_PZC lower than 7.3 and 6.5, respectively. Zr–Pu yielded a higher adsorption capacity of 225 mg/kg (2.05 times the adsorption capacity of VPum: 110 mg/kg), at pH = 2 and volumetric flow rate (Q_O) of 1.25 mL/min. Breakthrough time increases with decreasing pH and flow rate. The experimental adsorption data was well-matched by the Thomas and Adams-Bohart models with correlation coefficients (R²) of ≥ 0.980 (Zr–Pu) and ≥ 0.897 (VPum), confirming that both models are suitable tools to design fixed-bed column systems using volcanic rock materials. Overall, coating pumice with zirconium improved the defluoridation capacity of pumice; hence, a Zr–Pu-packed fixed-bed can be applied for defluoridation of excess fluoride from groundwater. However, additional investigations on, for instance, the influences of competing ions are advisable to draw explicit conclusions.
