Abstract
Seafood products are globally consumed, and there is an increasing demand for the quality and safety of these products among consumers. Some seafoods are easily contaminated by marine biotoxins in natural environments or cultured farming processes. When humans ingest different toxins accumulated in seafood, they may exhibit different poisoning symptoms. According to the investigations, marine toxins produced by harmful algal blooms and various other marine organisms mainly accumulate in the body organs such as liver and digestive tract of seafood animals. Several regions around the world have reported incidents of seafood poisoning by biotoxins, posing a threat to human health. Thus, most countries have legislated to specify the permissible levels of these biotoxins in seafood. Therefore, it is necessary for seafood producers and suppliers to conduct necessary testing of toxins in seafood before and after harvesting to prohibit excessive toxins containing seafood from entering the market, which therefore can reduce the occurrence of seafood poisoning incidents. In recent years, some technologies which can quickly, conveniently, and sensitively detect biological toxins in seafood, have been developed and validated, these technologies have the potential to help seafood producers, suppliers and regulatory authorities. This article reviews the seafood toxins sources and types, mechanism of action and bioaccumulation of marine toxins, as well as legislation and rapid detection technologies for biotoxins in seafood for official and fishermen supervision.

Abstract
Catechol, which has a high toxicity and low degradability, poses significant risks to both human health and the environment. Tracking of catechol residues is essential to protect human health and to assess the safety of the environment. We constructed sensing platforms to detect catechol based on the conductive metal-organic frameworks [Ni3(HITP)2] and their nanosilver composites. The reduction process of catechol at the Ni3(HITP)2/AgNP electrode is chemically irreversible as a result of the difference in compatibility of the oxidation stability and conductivity between the Ni3(HITP)2/AgNS and Ni3(HITP)2/AgNP electrodes. The electrochemical results show that the Ni3(HITP)2/AgNS electrode presents a lower detection limit of 0.053 μM and better sensitivity, reproducibility and repeatability than the Ni3(HITP)2/AgNP electrode. The kinetic mechanism of the catechol electrooxidation at the surface of the electrode is controlled by diffusion through a 2H+/2e- process. The transfer coefficient is the key factor used to illustrate this process. During the electrochemical conversion of phenol to ketone, more than half of ΔG is used to change the activation energy. We also studied the stability, anti-interference and reproducibility of these electrode systems.

Abstract
People’s health has been threatened by several common food hazards. Thus, it is very important to establish rapid and accurate methods to detect food hazards. In recent years, biosensors have inspired developments because of their specificity and sensitivity, short reaction time, low cost, small size and easy operation. Owing to their high precision and non-destructive characteristics, cell-based electrochemical detection methods can reflect the damage of food hazards to organisms better. In this review, the characteristics of electrochemical cell-based biosensors and their applications in the detection of common hazards in food are reviewed. The strategies of cell immobilization and 3D culture on electrodes are discussed. The current limitations and further development prospects of cell-based electrochemical biosensors are also evaluated.

Abstract
In this work, we propose a electrochemical enzyme-free glucose sensor by direct growth of conductive Ni/Co bimetal MOF on carbon cloth [Ni/Co(HHTP)MOF/CC] via a facile hydrothermal method. Due to excellent conductivity between Ni/Co(HHTP)MOF and CC, synergic catalytic effect of Ni and Co elements, the Ni/Co(HHTP)MOF/CC not only provides larger surface area and more effective active sites, but also boosts the charge transports and electro-catalytic performance. Under optimized conditions, the Ni/Co(HHTP)MOF/CC shows excellent activity with a linear range of 0.3 μM-2.312 mM, a low detection limit of 100 nM (S/N = 3), a fast response time of 2 s and a high sensitivity of 3250 μA mM-1 cm-2. Furthermore, the Ni/Co(HHTP)MOF/CC was successfully applied for the detection of glucose in real serum and beverages with competitive performances. This facile and cost-effective method provides a novel strategy for monitoring of glucose in biological and food samples.

Abstract
Shellfish toxins, as one kind of marine toxin, have attracted worldwide attention due to their severe threat to food safety and human health. Therefore, it is highly essential and urgent to develop a low-cost and convenient method to detect these toxins. With the rapid advance in microfabrication processes, micro/nano biosensors provide novel approaches to address this issue. In addition to their features of low cost, portability, easy operation, high efficiency and high bioactivity, micro/nano biosensors have great potential to realize on-the-spot, rapid detection of shellfish toxins. This review focuses on the most recent advances in the development of micro/nano biosensors for shellfish toxin detection. These biosensors are mainly classified into five categories according to their transducer detection principles, which include optical devices, electrochemical sensors, electrochemiluminescence, field-effect transistors, and acoustic devices. Sensor strategies, toxin analytes, biosensitive elements, coupling methods and field detection performance are highlighted to discuss the applications of shellfish toxin detection. With advances in sensor technology, biomaterials, microfabrication and miniaturized electronics, micro/nano biosensors applied to in-field fast detection of shellfish toxins are expected to play a critical role in food safety, environmental monitoring, and foreign trade in the foreseeable future. Finally, the current challenges and future development trends of micro/nano biosensors for shellfish toxin detection are discussed.

Abstract
With harmful algal blooms, marine food poisoning caused by marine biotoxins frequently occurs and is life-threatening if severe. However, the conventional detection methods of marine toxins have a few limitations: low sensitivity and high-cost. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a fast and sensitive on-site detection method for real seafood sample. Biosensors based on aptamers, antibodies, and cells have been applied in marine toxins monitoring. This review presents the classification and toxic effects of marine toxins, and recent biosensor for marine toxin detection. In addition, we have compared the superiority and limitation of these biosensors. Finally, challenges and opportunities of biosensors in food safety detection were discussed. Considering the excellent results achieved by the aptasensor in the field of detection, it seems ready to be put into practical applications.

Abstract
Foodborne diseases caused by pathogens and toxins are a serious threat to food safety and human health; thus, they are major concern to society. Existing conventional foodborne pathogen or toxin detection methods, including microbiological assay, nucleic acid-based assays, immunological assays, and instrumental analytical method, are time-consuming, labor-intensive and expensive. Because of the fast response and high sensitivity, cell-based biosensors are promising novel tools for food safety risk assessment and monitoring. This review focuses on the properties of mammalian cell-based biosensors and applications in the detection of foodborne pathogens (bacteria and viruses) and toxins (bacterial toxins, mycotoxins and marine toxins). We discuss mammalian cell adhesion and how it is involved in the establishment of 3D cell culture models for mammalian cell-based biosensors, as well as evaluate their limitations for commercialization and further development prospects.

Abstract
Out of control proliferation of toxic phytoplankton, called harmful algal blooms (HABs), have a significant economic impact on bivalve aquaculture and harvesting in coastal waters. Some phytotoxins, such as paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), are of concern due to the life-threatening symptoms they can cause. Development of rapid and low-cost screening tools would be a welcome addition to the laboratory methodologies employed in routine monitoring programs. However, most of the assays and biosensors for the screening of PSTs, are restricted to a single target, saxitoxin (STX), which is the most potent PST. The present study aimed at developing an assay for the detection of N-sulfocarbamoyl PST—GTX5, which is one of the most abundant toxins in bivalves during G. catenatum blooms as found on the Portuguese coast. Enzymatic assay employing PSTs’ transforming enzyme—carbamoylase—was proposed. Carbamoylase was extracted and purified from the surf clam S. solida. Carbamoylase displayed similar specificity to both carbamate (STX) and N-sulfocarbamate toxins (GTX5 and C1+2) converting them into decarbamoyl saxitoxin (dcSTX) and decarbamoyl gonyautoxins 2+3 (dcGTX2+3), respectively. The enzymatic assay involved hydrolysis of GTX5 by carbamoylase and quantification of the product of enzymatic reaction, dcSTX, using a potentiometric chemical sensor. A potentiometric sensor with plasticized PVC membrane that displayed sensitivity to dcSTX and selectivity in the presence of GTX5 was employed. Enzymatic assay allowed determination of GTX5 in the concentration range from 0.43 to 3.30 µmolL−1, which encompasses levels of GTX5 in contaminated bivalve extracts with toxicities above PSTs regulatory limits. The feasibility of the carbamoylase-based potentiometric assay for detection of GTX5 was demonstrated.
