Investigating motivating factors for sound hospital waste management

Presented and prioritizing waste management strategies using SWOT and QSPM approach in two private hospitals in Yazd in 2021

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to present a strategic waste management in two private hospitals in Yazd using models of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) and quantitative strategic planning matrix (QSPM).

METHODS

The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the organization was identified according to existing documents and expert team. The internal and external factors were identified by internal factor evaluation (IFE) and external factor evaluation (EFE) matrices. The strategies to improve waste management in two hospitals were presented by comparing internal and external factors. Finally, the attractiveness table was compiled and weighted using the QSPM method to prioritize the strategies.

RESULTS

The results demonstrated that 24 strengths, 30 weaknesses, 16 opportunities, and 22 threats were identified. The final score of internal and external factors for hospital A and B were (X: 2.37, Y:1.88) and (X: 2.37, Y: 2.01), respectively. Based on the results, 12 strategies were presented. Finally, the strategy of "the improvement of green management indicators" was implemented as a priority according to QSPM matrix.

CONCLUSION

The result of this study duplicated that using the QSPM and SWOT models is assist to present viable strategies to improve the health-care waste management.

[Innovations in medical waste management in a new referral hospital in Niamey, Niger]

INTRODUCTION

Public hospitals in Africa are experiencing major organizational dysfunctions, which are particularly acute in waste management. The opening of a new reference hospital in Niamey offers the opportunity to study the implementation of an innovative waste management system.

PURPOSE OF RESEARCH

The objective of this study was to document the agents’ representations, practices, and construction of waste management standards in a new tertiary hospital in Niamey. We sought to study the implementation of innovative materials in waste management and the progressive construction of protocols, habits, and levers of adaptation. This research was carried out using a socio-spatial approach and essentially mobilized the tools of qualitative investigation.

RESULTS

Our study highlighted that a hospital waste management culture is progressively established, thanks to an effort to plan activities, to promote the sector, the activities and the emergence of a profession organized around waste management. However, the distinct waste management sectors are struggling to stabilize due to the differentiated statuses and perceptions of the agents. Finally, the success of hospital waste management depends on waste collection at the city level.

CONCLUSIONS

The Niamey referral hospital is intended to be an infrastructure of excellence, a showcase for neighboring countries. In this respect, our study shows that it is crucial to invest in planning, the enhancement of the profession and the recognition of all the agents involved in waste management.

Influencing factors behind inappropriate solid waste management of small clinics in a resource-constrained country

Appropriate clinical waste management is a critical concern in today's era. Resource-constrained countries agonize greatly over this issue in order to mitigate inappropriate clinical waste management practices. The goal of this study is to assess factors behind inappropriate waste management of small clinics in resource-constrained countries. We tested the hypothesis that negligence of government, knowledge and awareness, and financial burden are three key factors behind inappropriate solid waste management of small clinics. A two-phase survey including a pilot study and a main study was conducted for exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, respectively, in the fourth largest city of Pakistan, i.e., Hyderabad. One sample t test was used to validate the hypothesis, the correlation between the three key factors, and the location of the clinics were established. These factors were found to have a contribution to inappropriate waste management of small clinics. The hypothesis was then validated, and all three factors were found to have no significant variation in responses with the contrast of three types of clinic locations, namely, low-, medium-, and high-income areas. Responses were almost identical and bear equal significance from all locations, the financial burden factor is at the highest, the second factor is the negligence of government, and the third factor is that of knowledge and awareness. This study highlights the factors that are usually neglected and can help to improve solid waste management of small clinics in resource-constrained countries.

Hospital waste management in developing countries: A mini review

Health care activities can generate different kinds of hazardous wastes. Mismanagement of these wastes can result in environmental and occupational health risks. Developing countries are resource-constrained when it comes to safe management of hospital wastes. This study summarizes the main issues faced in hospital waste management in developing countries. A review of the existing literature suggests that regulations and legislations focusing on hospital waste management are recent accomplishments in many of these countries. Implementation of these rules varies from one hospital to another. Moreover, wide variations exist in waste generation rates within as well as across these countries. This is mainly attributable to a lack of an agreement on the definitions and the methodology among the researchers to measure such wastes. Furthermore, hospitals in these countries suffer from poor waste segregation, collection, storage, transportation and disposal practices, which can lead to occupational and environmental risks. Knowledge and awareness regarding proper waste management remain low in the absence of training for hospital staff. Moreover, hospital sanitary workers, and scavengers, operate without the provision of safety equipment or immunization. Unsegregated waste is illegally recycled, leading to further safety risks. Overall, hospital waste management in developing countries faces several challenges. Sustainable waste management practices can go a long way in reducing the harmful effects of hospital wastes.

Assessing knowledge, performance, and efficiency for hospital waste management-a comparison of government and private hospitals in Pakistan

Proper management of healthcare waste is a critical concern in many countries of the world. Rapid urbanization and population growth rates pose serious challenges to healthcare waste management infrastructure in such countries. This study was aimed at assessing the situation of hospital waste management in a major city of Pakistan. Simple random sampling was used to select 12 government and private hospitals in the city. Field visits, physical measurements, and questionnaire survey method were used for data collection. Information was obtained regarding hospital waste generation, segregation, collection, storage, transportation, and disposal. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) was used to classify the hospitals on the basis of their relative waste management efficiencies. The weighted average total waste generation at the surveyed hospitals was discovered to be 1.53 kg/patient/day of which 75.15% consisted of general waste and the remaining consisted of biomedical waste. Of the total waste, 24.54% came from the public hospital and the remaining came from the private hospitals. DEA showed that seven of the surveyed hospitals had scale or pure technical inefficiencies in their waste management activities. The public hospital was relatively less efficient than most of the private hospitals in these activities. Results of the questionnaire survey showed that none of the surveyed hospitals was carrying out waste management in strict compliance with government regulations. Moreover, hospital staff at all the surveyed hospitals had low level of knowledge regarding safe hospital waste management practices. The current situation should be rectified in order to avoid environmental and epidemiological risks.

Application of life cycle assessment for hospital solid waste management: A case study

This study was meant to determine environmental aspects of hospital waste management scenarios using a life cycle analysis approach. The survey for this study was conducted at the largest hospital in a major city of Pakistan. The hospital was thoroughly analyzed from November 2014 to January 2015 to quantify its wastes by category. The functional unit of the study was selected as 1 tonne of disposable solid hospital waste. System boundaries included transportation of hospital solid waste and its treatment and disposal by landfilling, incineration, composting, and material recycling methods. These methods were evaluated based on their greenhouse gas emissions. Landfilling and incineration turned out to be the worst final disposal alternatives, whereas composting and material recovery displayed savings in emissions. An integrated system (composting, incineration, and material recycling) was found as the best solution among the evaluated scenarios. This study can be used by policymakers for the formulation of an integrated hospital waste management plan.

IMPLICATIONS

This study deals with environmental aspects of hospital waste management scenarios. It is an increasing area of concern in many developing and resource-constrained countries of the world. The life cycle analysis (LCA) approach is a useful tool for estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from different waste management activities. There is a shortage of information in existing literature regarding LCA of hospital wastes. To the best knowledge of the authors this work is the first attempt at quantifying the environmental footprint of hospital waste in Pakistan.
