Maturity and stability assessment of composted tomato residues and chicken manure using a rotary drum bioreactor

A multi-criteria approach to test and evaluate the efficiency of two composting systems under two different climates

The selection of the appropriate composting system, climate conditions, and duration of the composting process are important parameters for municipal solid waste composting. Therefore, this research aimed to design, test, and evaluate two different static composting systems under two different climate regions, Palestine and India, following a multi-criteria approach. A forced-aeration composting system was designed for use in Palestine, and a naturally aerated one was used in India. Three experiments were conducted, two of them in Palestine and one in India. The operational parameters were controlled and monitored during the composting process, while the physio-chemical and biological parameters were tested to evaluate the compost end quality. The results showed that both systems provide good efficiency toward formation of final compost (39-43 days in Palestine, and 31 days in India), and the average materials' volume reduction was almost 60%. The physio-chemical analysis showed that most of the parameters comply with the threshold limits specified by the Palestinian Standards Institution (PSI) and Indian Fertilizer Control Order (FCO) except for minor deviations. Both systems provided a high fertility index (4.3, 4.7, and 4.8), and a high clean index (4.6, 5.0, and 4.7). However, the results of the biological parameters showed that all the experiments met PSI, but none of them met FCO, suggesting that the outer edges of the composting system didn't heat enough to inactivate pathogenic microbes, therefore, developing the system by adding turning option could overcome this shortcoming. It was concluded that the forced aeration system is suitable for Palestine, while the natural aeration system is suitable for India.Implications: Municipal solid waste management is facing technical and financial challenges worldwide due to the increasing generation of solid waste following the population growth. The current improper management of this waste stream through landfilling is adding pressure on the environment as a result of methane emissions and landfill leachate. Therefore, composting of the organic fraction through selection of an appropriate composting system can solve many waste management problems and contribute to environmental sustainability. This research focuses on design, test and evaluate two composting systems in two regions with different climatic conditions, Palestine and India as both are facing waste management problems. The outcome of this research optimized the composting process which can be replicated and scaled up in other countries worldwide with similar climatic conditions.

Assessment of the Biodegradability and Compostability of Finished Leathers: Analysis Using Spectroscopy and Thermal Methods

In this study, the biodegradation properties of leather treated with various finishing chemicals were evaluated in order to enhance the sustainability of leather processing. We applied advanced analytical techniques, including FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Leather samples treated with different polymers, resins, bio-based materials, and traditional finishing agents were subjected to a composting process under controlled conditions to measure their biodegradability. The findings revealed that bio-based polyurethane finishes and acrylic wax exhibited biodegradability, while traditional chemical finishes like isocyanate and nitrocellulose lacquer showed moderate biodegradation levels. The results indicated significant differences in the biodegradation rates and the impact on plant germination and growth. Some materials, such as black pigment, nitrocellulose lacquer and wax, were beneficial for plant growth, while others, such as polyurethane materials, had adverse effects. These results support the use of eco-friendly finishes to reduce the environmental footprint of leather production. Overall, this study underscores the importance of selecting sustainable finishing chemicals to promote eco-friendly leather-manufacturing practices.

Formation and characterization of leaf waste into organic compost

In solid waste management, pollution-free disposal of leaf waste in urban areas is still not standardized and adopted. According to the World Bank report, 57% of wastes generated in South East Asia are consisted of food and green waste, which can be recycled into valuable bio-compost. The present study shows a method of leaf litter waste management by composting it using essential microbe (EM) method. Different parameters, such as pH, electrical conductivity, macronutrients, micronutrients, and potentially toxic elements (PTE) were measured at zero to 50 days of composting using appropriate methods. The microbial composting was shown to mature within 20 to 40 days, and its maturity could be evaluated by the attainment of stable pH (8), electrical conductivity (0.9 mS/cm), and C:N ratio ≥ 20. The analysis was also performed on other bio-composts viz. kitchen waste compost, vermicompost, cow dung manure, municipal organic waste compost, and neem cake compost. The fertility index (FI) was evaluated based on six parameters viz. total carbon, total nitrogen, N ratio, phosphorus, potassium, and sulphur contents. The PTE values were used to calculate their clean index (CI). The results showed that leaf waste compost has a higher fertility index (FI = 4.06) than other bio-composts, except the neem cake compost (FI = 4.44). The clean index of the leaf waste compost (CI = 4.38) was also higher than other bio-composts. This indicates that leaf waste compost is a valuable bio-resource with high nutritive value and low PTE contamination, with a favourable prospective to be used in organic farming.

Insights on dissolved organic matter and bacterial community succession during secondary composting in residue after black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens L.) bioconversion for food waste treatment

Black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens L. BSFL) bioconversion is a promising biotechnology for food waste treatment. However, the separated residues still do not meet criteria for use as land application biofertilizers. In this work, we investigated a full-scale BSFL bioconversion project to explore features of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its associated responses of bacterial community succession in residue during secondary composting. Data showed that the concentrations of total nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen decreased by 11.8% and 22.6% during the secondary composting, respectively, while the nitrate nitrogen concentration increased 18.7 times. The DOM concentration decreased by 69.1%, in which protein-like, alcohol-phenol, and biodegradable aliphatic substances were metabolized by bacteria during the thermophilic phase together with the accumulation of humus-like substances, resulting in an increase in the relative concentration of aromatic compounds. The structure of the bacterial community varied at different stages of the bioprocess, in which Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes were the dominant bacterial phyla. Lysinibacillus, Pusillimonas, and Caldicoprobacter were found to be key contributors in the degradation and formation of DOM. The DOM concentration (33.4%) and temperature (17.7%) were the prime environmental factors that promoted succession of the bacterial community. Through bacterial metabolism, the structural stability of DOM components was improved during the composting process, and the degrees of humification and aromaticity were also increased. This study depicted the dynamic features of DOM and the associated bacterial community succession in residue during secondary composting, which is conducive with the reuse of BSFL residue as biofertilizer for agriculture.

Influence of tomato waste compost ratios on plant growth and fruit quality of cucumber and summer squash

Peat-moss (Sphagnum spp.), is currently an expensive material and a nonrenewable resource with variable properties. Therefore, its use should be gradually reduced. Hence, there are numerous attempts aiming to reduce the use of peat-moss as a bulk substrate and to search for high-quality, locally available and low-cost alternatives to peat-moss. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to investigate the effect of partial replacing of peat-moss with tomato waste compost (TWC) on plant growth, productivity, fruit quality, and morphological features of two types of economic cucurbits species under greenhouse conditions. The plants were planted into pots containing different proportions of TWC (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30%) with peat-moss, sand and clay as growing substrates. The results indicated that the plant height and the leaves number of both plants were significantly influenced by different substrate treatments. TWC ratios of 15% and 20% increased the amount of cucumber and summer squash fruit yield more than the commercial peat media but they had insignificant differences. Also, they were significantly improved fruit quality characteristics, particularly total soluble solid (TSS) and titratable acidity (TA) of crop fruits more than commercial peat-moss treatment.Implications: Because of the high price of peat-moss and that it is a non-renewable material, farmers resorted to using other alternatives, including green residue compost. Thus, the aim of this work is to reduce the use of peat-moss by replacing it with the use of lokw percentages of TWC. When tomato plant residues return to the soil by converting them into compost, this is a valuable agricultural practice to improve soil fertility and increase the organic matter of the soil as well as increase the source of nitrogen (N) that supports the growth of beneficial microorganisms.

Possibilities of Using Organic Waste after Biological and Physical Processing—An Overview

With a rapidly increasing amount of waste, waste management is an extremely important issue. Utilising processes such as combustion and biological processing significantly decreases the accumulation and volume of waste. Despite this, huge volumes of resulting waste that still need to be managed remain. This paper identifies various methods of processing organic waste, discussing both thermal and biological techniques for waste management. Additionally, this paper demonstrates that the end products remaining after processing waste are oftentimes functional for agricultural use. These materials are excellent byproducts used to produce various organic, mineral and organomineral fertilisers. For instance, it appears that the production of fertilisers is the most promising method of utilising fly ash that results from the combustion of waste. In order to minimise the environmental risk of polluting soil with heavy metals, waste, as well as ashes resulting from combustion, must meet the criteria for the limit of contaminants.
