Geographic intelligence to investigate community participation: a scoping review

PURPOSE

To understand the applicability and unique contributions of global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) technologies to investigate individuals' participation in the community.

METHODS

A scoping review was conducted to summarize studies that employed GPS and/or GIS to assess community participation. Systematic literature searches were performed using nine electronic databases, up to April 2022. Two independent reviewers screened studies for eligibility and extracted data from the selected studies.

RESULTS

The searches retrieved 628 articles, of which 36 met the inclusion criteria. In 31 studies, a GPS unit or GPS-enabled device monitored the community mobility of individuals with different health conditions. Tracking periods varied from five hours to 30 consecutive days. The spatiotemporal parameters obtained from satellite-based data provided information about individuals' presence in the community. Most studies combined GPS with other measuring tools (self-report diaries/questionnaires, qualitative interviews) to capture a broader description of community participation.

CONCLUSIONS

GPS and GIS are viable approaches for advancing research as they provide unique information about community participation not easily captured by other methods. The combination of available methods comprehensively address the physical and social dimensions of this construct.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONGlobal positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) technology allows direct and real-time quantification of patterns of individuals' community mobility.The geographic area where individuals participate in daily living activities complements information from self-report diaries/questionnaires.Combining GPS technology with self-report diaries/questionnaires allows a broader description of individuals' community participation, addressing respectively both its physical and social dimensions.Knowledge of individuals' access to and involvement in community locations/situations may help therapists design interventions to improve community participation.

Challenges and opportunity in mobility among older adults - key determinant identification

BACKGROUND

Attention is focused on the health and physical fitness of older adults due to their increasing age. Maintaining physical abilities, including safe walking and movement, significantly contributes to the perception of health in old age. One of the early signs of declining fitness in older adults is limited mobility. Approximately one third of 70-year-olds and most 80-year-olds report restrictions on mobility in their apartments and immediate surroundings. Restriction or loss of mobility is a complex multifactorial process, which makes older adults prone to falls, injuries, and hospitalizations and worsens their quality of life while increasing overall mortality.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the study is to identify the factors that have had a significant impact on mobility in recent years and currently, and to identify gaps in our understanding of these factors. The study aims to highlight areas where further research is needed and where new and effective solutions are required.

METHODS

The PRISMA methodology was used to conduct a scoping review in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Papers published from 2007 to 2021 were searched in November 2021. Of these, 52 papers were selected from the initial 788 outputs for the final analysis.

RESULTS

The final selected papers were analyzed, and the key determinants were found to be environmental, physical, cognitive, and psychosocial, which confirms the findings of previous studies. One new determinant is technological. New and effective solutions lie in understanding the interactions between different determinants of mobility, addressing environmental factors, and exploring opportunities in the context of emerging technologies, such as the integration of smart home technologies, design of accessible and age-friendly public spaces, development of policies and regulations, and exploration of innovative financing models to support the integration of assistive technologies into the lives of seniors.

CONCLUSION

For an effective and comprehensive solution to support senior mobility, the determinants cannot be solved separately. Physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and technological determinants can often be perceived as the cause/motivation for mobility. Further research on these determinants can help to arrive at solutions for environmental determinants, which, in turn, will help improve mobility. Future studies should investigate financial aspects, especially since many technological solutions are expensive and not commonly available, which limits their use.

Numerical Solution for the Single-Impulse Flyby Co-Orbital Spacecraft Problem

The traversal inspection of satellites in satellite constellations or geosynchronous orbits has been a focus of research. A large number of variable orbit requirements in the “single-to-single” mode severely affects the efficiency of inspections. To address this problem, this study investigated the problem of a single-impulse flyby co-orbiting two spacecraft and proposed a derivative-free numerical solution method that used the geometric relationship between the two intersections of the target and transfer orbits of the flyby problem in order to transform them into a nonlinear equation in a single variable for a given impulse time. The validity of the proposed method was verified using numerical examples. While the Lambert problem is one of the bases for solving the variable orbit problem, on-star intelligent control also raises the requirements for speed. To address this problem, this study also investigated the Lambert problem in a single-impulse flyby co-orbiting two spacecraft and determined the iterative initial value by constructing a quadratic interpolation equation between the inverse of the transfer time and the vertical component of the eccentric vector, the derivative-free quadratic interpolation cut-off method was proposed. Using 100,000 random tests showed that computational efficiency was improved by more than one order of magnitude compared with commonly used methods, with a calculation error of less than 10−6.
