Abstract
Immunoenhancing effects have been widely described following acute stressors in several vertebrates, and valuable contributions have been made from studies on acute stress to understand hormonal-immune interactions. However, most studies focus on hormonal and immune responses after standardized time lapses, neglecting potential influence of duration of exposition to stressor. Herein, we investigate fluctuations of plasma hormone concentrations (corticosterone and testosterone) and immunity (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, phagocytosis of blood cells, and plasma bacterial killing ability) in a toad species (Rhinella icterica) in response to six different periods of exposure to restraint stress. We observed increased plasma corticosterone concentrations following restraint in all sampled times (0.5 to 48 h), with the highest values being observed during the first hour (0.5 to 1 h). Restraint-induced increases in the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and phagocytosis percentage were observed from the first 0.5 h, gradually increasing after that with the time of restraint. We also observed decreased testosterone plasma concentrations in response to a more prolonged restraint (24 and 48 h). No changes were observed in plasma bacterial killing ability following restraint. Together, our results demonstrate dynamic time-related hormonal and immune changes. These results point to the fact that for some species measuring hormonal and immune variables at single time points following a stressor might work better when preceded by a study of the temporal changes of the response variables to the stimuli applied. Also, time of response needs to be considered when different variables are used as proxies of stress.

Abstract
Mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation and neurogenesis are known to play a role in neuronal survival during hibernation. Herein, we investigate the activity of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and Ets like-1 protein (Elk1) kinase involved in cell survival, as well as the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), a cell proliferation marker, in the brain of the frog Pelophylax esculentus. The study was conducted on female and male frogs collected during the annual cycle. Our results demonstrated that JNK activity increased during the hibernating phase in relation to the active phase. Interestingly, P-Elk1 levels were positively correlated with P-JNK levels, suggesting that the JNK/Elk1 pathway is pivotal in mediating neuroprotective adaptations that are essential to successful hibernation. On the contrary, we detected higher PCNA expression levels during the active period compared with the hibernating period. A sex dimorphism was observed in the expression levels of P-JNK/P-Elk1 that were specifically higher in males, and in the expression of PCNA reporting higher levels in female brains. Much remains to be learned regarding the regulation of hibernation, however, our findings provide new insights into the role of MAPK and proliferative pathways in hibernation, adding new knowledge concerning the mechanisms activated in the brain of ectothermic species to counteract the damage resulting from extreme temperatures.

Abstract
Almost all physiological processes within the organism, including immune parameters and hormones, follow a circadian rhythm. These daily fluctuations are often observed in free-living organisms; however, little is known regarding hormonal and immune daily variations in anurans, particularly under laboratory conditions. This study aimed to investigate the hormonal and immune daily variation in captive-bred Bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) under constant conditions (21 °C and 12:12 LD cycle). Our results showed a daily variation for plasma corticosterone (CORT), testosterone (T), and melatonin (MEL), as well as for blood leukocyte profile, phagocytic activity, and plasma bacterial killing ability (BKA). Hormonal profile and immune activity were higher at the dark when compared with the light phase; however, monocytes and lymphocytes followed the opposite pattern. Moreover, CORT was positively correlated with phagocytosis percentage of blood cells, BKA, and monocytes, while MEL and T showed a positive correlation with PP. Our results demonstrate the daily covariation of different immune variables and immunomodulatory hormones. These 24 h-day variations and covariation certainly have broad implications and need to be considered for better understanding anuran physiology both in the context of laboratory and field studies.

Abstract
This issue is dedicated to the late Professor Giovanni Chieffi, and this article is an overview of the research on Comparative Endocrinology of reproduction using Rana esculenta (alias Pelophylax esculentus) as a model system. Starting from the early 1970s till today, a large quantity of work have been conducted both in the fields of experimental endocrinology and in the definition of the diffuse neuroendocrine system, with a major focus on the increasing role of regulatory peptides. The various aspects investigated concerned the histological descriptions of principal endocrine glands of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, the localization and distribution in the HPG of several different substances (i.e. neurosteroids, hypothalamic peptide hormones, pituitary gonadotropins, gonadal sex steroids, and other molecules), the determination of sex hormone concentrations in both serum and tissues, the hormone manipulations, as well as the gene and protein expression of steroidogenic enzymes and their respective receptors. All together these researches, often conducted considering different periods of the annual reproductive cycle of the green frog, allowed to understand the mechanism of cascade control/regulation of the HPG axis of R. esculenta, characterizing the role of different hormones in the two sexes, and testing the hypotheses about the function of single hormones in different target organs. It becomes evident from the review that, in their simplest form, several features of this species are specular as compared to those of other vertebrate species and that reproduction in this frog species is either under endogenous multi-hormonal control or by a wide array of different factors. Our excursus of this research, spanning almost five decades, shows that R. esculenta has been intensively and successfully used as an animal model in reproductive endocrinology as well as several field studies such as those involving environmental concerns that focus on the effects of endocrine disruptors and other environmental contaminants.

Abstract
Stressful experiences can promote harmful effects on physiology and fitness. However, stress-mediated hormonal and immune changes are complex and may be highly dependent on body condition. Here, we investigated captivity-associated stress effects, over 7, 30, 60, and 90 days on plasma corticosterone (CORT) and testosterone (T) levels, body index, and innate immunity (bacterial killing ability and phagocytosis of peritoneal cells) in toads (Rhinella icterica). Toads in captivity exhibited elevated CORT and decreased T and immunity, without changes in body index. The inter-relationships between these variables were additionally contrasted with those obtained previously for R. schneideri, a related species that exhibited extreme loss of body mass under the same captive conditions. While T and phagocytosis were positively associated in both species, the relationship between CORT and bacterial killing ability was dependent on body index alterations. While CORT and bacterial killing ability were positively associated for toads that maintained body index, CORT was negatively associated with body index in toads that lost body mass over time in captivity. In these same toads, body index was positively associated with bacterial killing ability. These results demonstrate that steroids-immunity inter-relationships arising from prolonged exposure to a stressor in toads are highly dependent on body condition.

Abstract
When stimuli from the environment are perceived to be a threat or potential threat then animals initiate stress responses, with activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis and secretion of glucocorticoid hormones (cortisol and corticosterone). Whilst standard deviation or standard error values are always reported, it is only when graphs of individual responses are shown that the extensive variation between animals is apparent. Some animals have little or no response to a stressor that evokes a relatively large response in others. Glucocorticoid responses of fish, amphibian, reptiles, birds, and mammals are considered in this review. Comparisons of responses between animals and groups of animals focused on responses to restraint or confinement as relatively standard stressors. Individual graphs could not be found in the literature for glucocorticoid responses to capture or restraint in fish or reptiles, with just one graph in mammals with the first sample was collected when animals were initially restrained. Coefficients of variation (CVs) calculated for parameters of glucocorticoid stress responses showed that the relative magnitudes of variation were similar in different vertebrate groups. The overall mean CV for glucocorticoid concentrations in initial (0 min) samples was 74.5%, and CVs for samples collected over various times up to 4 h were consistently between 50% and 60%. The factors that lead to the observed individual variation and the extent to which this variation is adaptive or non-adaptive are little known in most animals, and future studies of glucocorticoid responses in animals can focus on individual responses and their origins and significance.

Abstract
Non-invasive measurement of urinary corticosterone and testosterone metabolites in amphibians provides opportunities for endocrine studies of responses to physiological and psychological stressors. Typically, corticosterone metabolite concentrations increase in frog urine within 1-2h of a mild capture and handling stress protocol. However, no study has investigated the effect of duration of manual restraint on the changes in corticosterone and reproductive hormones in amphibians. We quantified urinary corticosterone and testosterone metabolite responses for 8h following various durations of manual restraint (control, 5, 15 or 30min) in adult male cane toads (Rhinella marina) under controlled laboratory conditions. All toads had a corticosterone stress response over 8h to our standard capture and handling stressor. The mean corticosterone stress response was significantly higher after 15 or 30min restraint in comparison to the control (no restraint) or to 5min restraint. Manual restraint for 5, 15 or 30min caused a significant reduction in urinary testosterone concentrations over 8h. We also provide a novel method of quantifying plasticity in corticosterone stress responses in amphibians with respect to restraint duration using the concept of a "reaction norm". The reaction norm, which was calculated as slope of the regression line of integrated corticosterone response against restraint duration, was 9.69 (pg corticosterone/μg creatinineh)/min for male toads. In summary, corticosterone and testosterone responses to restraint are affected by restraint duration in male toads. Glucocorticoid reaction norms can be applied to study the change in physiological stress hormonal response with respect to restraint duration in other amphibian species.

Abstract
In this study we measured excreted fecal corticoid metabolites (FCM) in maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) living within a protected reserve, on farmlands or in a boundary zone between the two habitats, and determined the impacts of season and reproductive status on adrenal activity. Feces were collected within a national park (n=191 samples), a park boundary zone (n=39) and on nearby farmlands (n=27), processed and analyzed by enzyme immunoassay. FCM amounts from samples collected on farmlands were higher (P<0.05) than in those collected inside the reserve and from the boundary zone. In relation to seasonality, FCM were elevated (P<0.05) in spring (September-November) when wolf pairs were raising young. We then divided the samples collected during breeding season (March-August) into cycling females and male/non-cycling females based on fecal progesterone: fecal testosterone ratio. FCM concentrations of the former collected inside the park were higher than (P<0.05) than the latter group. However, there were no differences in FCM levels between the two groups for samples collected in the boundary zone and on farmlands. Furthermore, FCM concentrations of male/non-cycling females samples collected on farmlands were 2- to 5-fold higher (P<0.05) than in counterparts collected inside the park. The consistently high FCM concentrations in samples collected on farmlands indicate that, in addition to seasonality, gender and reproductive status, anthropogenic pressures also contribute to elevating adrenal steroid for individuals living in altered habitat.

Abstract
Some animals have the ability to modulate their stress response depending on the type and duration of the stressor. Modulations can initiate behavioral changes that increase fitness during the stressful period. The goal of this study was to determine if Atlantic sharpnose sharks, Rhizoprionodon terraenovae, exhibit seasonal modulations in their secondary stress parameters. Mature, male Atlantic sharpnose sharks were acutely stressed and serially sampled for one-hour, during spring, summer, and fall. An elevated stress response was observed for plasma glucose, lactate and osmolality during summer compared to spring and fall. Glucose also exhibited elevated initial concentrations, followed by a linear response during summer; varying from the asymptotic response during spring and fall. Hematocrit did not show differences over time or season; however, the power of the analysis was low due to the small sample size. When an additional 120 samples were included in the analysis, significantly higher initial hematocrit values were found during summer. Based on these results we suggest that summer is a demanding time for Atlantic sharpnose sharks.

Abstract
Stressors generally decrease testosterone secretion and inhibit reproduction in animals. Urinary testosterone and corticosterone metabolite concentrations were measured in adult male cane toads (Rhinella marina) at the time of capture from the wild and during 24 h of confinement with repeated handling. Mean urinary testosterone concentrations increased 2 h after capture, were significantly elevated above initial concentrations at 5 h, and then declined. Mean testosterone concentrations remained elevated 24 h after capture. Mean urinary corticosterone concentrations increased after capture, were significantly elevated above initial concentrations at 2 h, and remained elevated thereafter. This is the first report in amphibians of an increase in testosterone excretion after capture from the wild, with previous studies showing either no change or decline in testosterone. This finding may be associated with the mating strategy and maintenance of reproductive effort in the cane toad, a species that shows explosive breeding and agonistic male–male interactions during breeding. The finding that testosterone excretion increases rather than decreases after capture in male cane toads shows that it should not be generally assumed that reproductive hormone secretion will decrease after capture in amphibians.

Abstract
Life history theory is concerned with the costs of survival, growth and reproduction under different ecological conditions and the allocation of resources to meet these costs. Typical approaches used to address these topics include manipulation of food resources, followed by measures of subsequent reproductive traits, and measures of the relationship between current and future reproductive investment. Rarely, however, do studies test for the interaction of past investment, present resource availability and future investment simultaneously. Here, we investigate this interaction in females of a sexual parasite-host system consisting of the hybridogenetic frog Rana esculenta (E) and one of its parental species Rana lessonae (L). We kept females from each of two groups (with or without previous reproduction) under two food treatments (low or high) and regularly recorded their growth as well as their body condition and hormone titres as measures of future reproductive condition. After keeping them in hibernation until the following spring, we exposed the females to males, recorded whether they spawned or not and related this response to their condition in the previous autumn. Past reproduction negatively affected growth during summer and condition during autumn which, in turn, reduced the following year's reproductive output. These costs of previous reproduction were less pronounced under the high than under the low food treatment and lower in R. lessonae than in R. esculenta. Increasing food supply improved reproductive condition more in L than in E females. These species differences in reproductive costs and food requirements provide a mechanistic explanation for why E females skip annual reproduction almost twice as often as L females. Since R. esculenta is a sexual parasite that depends on R. lessonae for successful reproduction, these species-specific life history patterns not only affect individual fitness but also the spatial structure and temporal dynamics of mixed LE populations.

Abstract
Many animals exhibit dramatic responses when subjected to a stressor. A classic marker of the stress response is an increase in plasma glucocorticoids, but this constitutes only one step in the cascade from experience of a stressor to wider organismal changes, including behavior. The behavioral sensitivity to glucocorticoids would determine the consequences of the stress-related alteration of behavior for the organism. In this study we explored, under laboratory conditions, the prenatal and postnatal effects of corticosterone on activity and thermoregulation of juveniles of the common lizard, Lacerta vivipara. Activity was measured as the time spent moving and the time spent scratching the wall in an empty terrarium. Thermoregulatory behavior was measured as the time spent motionless under a light bulb. Activity and thermoregulation of juveniles of the common lizard showed a different sensitivity to prenatal and postnatal corticosterone treatment, modulated by juvenile sex and maternal condition. Prenatal corticosterone manipulation influenced the time spent moving in both sexes. By contrast, only juvenile females increased the time spent scratching the walls of the terrarium when corticosterone was delivered both at the prenatal and postnatal stage. Prenatal hormone manipulation increased the time spent basking by juveniles issued from large females. These results suggest that, in addition to influencing a variety of behavioral and morphological traits, corticosterone may also play an important role in the regulation of activity and thermoregulation of juvenile lizards, modulated by individual sex and maternal condition.

Abstract
A non-lethal technique for drawing repeated blood samples from spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) was used to examine sex, seasonal, and capture technique differences in the physiological stress response under natural, undisturbed conditions. Baseline and stress-induced (30 min of handling and restraint) corticosterone (CORT) concentrations were measured at night during the spring migrations into and out of the breeding pond, as well as during the fall migration to over-wintering sites. Females had significantly higher CORT concentrations than males during the spring migration toward the breeding pond, but this difference was not present when animals emerged from the pond post-breeding or during the fall migration. CORT concentrations did not vary seasonally, but during the acute stress response, CORT concentrations nearly doubled during the spring inbound migration, exhibited a nearly significant increase during the spring outbound migration, and did not change in the fall. Allowing animals to sit overnight in the buckets in which they were captured elicited CORT concentrations that tended to be higher (although not statistically significant) than when animals were sampled on the night of capture. The ability to sample blood from spotted salamanders using a non-lethal technique offers an opportunity to better understand both amphibian physiology and ecology.

Abstract
While the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) response to stress appears to be conserved in vertebrates, the manner in which it is activated and its actions vary. We examine two trends in the stress biology literature that have been addressed in amphibian and reptilian species: (1). variable interactions among stress, corticosterone, and reproduction and (2). adrenocortical modulation. In the first topic we examine context-dependent interactions among stress, corticosterone, and reproduction. An increasing number of studies report positive associations between reproduction and corticosterone that contradict the generalization that stress inhibits reproduction. Moderately elevated levels of stress hormones appear to facilitate reproduction by mobilizing energy stores. In contrast, pronounced activation of the HPA axis and extremely elevated levels of stress hormones appear to inhibit reproduction. Much of these contrasting effects of stress and reproduction can be explained by expanding the Energetics-Hormone Vocalization Model, proposed for anuran calling behavior, to other taxa. In the second topic, a number of amphibians and reptiles modulate their HPA stress response. Adrenocortical modulation can occur at multiple levels and due to a variety of factors. However, we have little information as to the physiological basis for the variability. We suggest that several ecologically based ideas, such as variability in the length of the breeding season and lifetime reproductive opportunities, can be used to explain the utility of adrenocortical modulation in these taxa.

Abstract
The vertebrate stress response helps animals respond to environmental dangers such as predators or storms. An important component of the stress response is glucocorticoid (GC) release, resulting from activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. After release, GCs induce a variety of behavioral and physiological changes that presumably help the animal respond appropriately to the situation. Consequently, GC secretion is often considered an obligatory response to stressful situations. Evidence now indicates, however, that free-living species from many taxa can seasonally modulate GC release. In other words, the magnitudes of both unstressed and stressed GC concentrations change depending upon the time of year. This review examines the growing evidence that GC concentrations in free-living reptiles, amphibians, and birds, but not mammals, are commonly elevated during the breeding season. This evidence is then used to test three hypotheses with different focuses on GC's energetic or behavioral effects, as well as on GC's role in preparing the animal for subsequent stressors. These hypotheses attempt to place annual GC rhythms into a physiological or behavioral context. Integrating seasonal differences in GC concentrations with either different physiological states or different life history stages provides clues to a new understanding of how GCs actually help in survival during stress. Consequently, understanding seasonal modulation of GC release has far-reaching importance for both the physiology of the stress response and the short-term survival of individual animals.

Abstract
It is well known that certain actions of androgen are mediated through in situ aromatization to estrogen in neural target tissues. This study was undertaken to investigate androgen utilization in the hypothalamus of the female frog, Rana esculenta, through a quantification of estrogen receptors and aromatase activity during the reproductive cycle. 3H-estradiol-binding molecules were present in both the cytosol and the nuclear extract of the hypothalamus. These molecules bound specifically 3H-estradiol with high affinity (Kd 10(-10) M) and low capacity (cytosol: 1.2+/-0.4 fmol/mg protein; nuclear extract: 7.9+/-0.6 fmol/mg protein). Aromatase activity was detected in the microsomal fraction of the hypothalamus using a sensitive in vitro radiometric assay. Both aromatase activity and nuclear estrogen receptor binding fluctuated in synchrony throughout the reproductive cycle. Western blot analysis of aromatase protein revealed one immunoreactive band with a molecular weight of approximately 56 kDa. In contrast to aromatase enzyme activity, the relative levels of aromatase protein changed little during the reproductive cycle suggesting that post-translational mechanisms may be involved in regulating estrogen synthesis in the frog brain. A possible role for estrogens in the modulation of the reproductive behavior in this species is suggested.

Abstract
The dark-eyed junco (junco hyemalis) exhibits differential migration in autumn that, in general, results in females overwintering south of males, and young within each sex overwintering north of older birds. Individuals overwintering at higher latitudes face less predictable and more challenging environmental conditions. Rapid increases in circulating levels of the energy-regulating glucocorticosteroid, corticosterone, occur in response to environmental stressors. To establish whether the strength of acute corticosterone secretion was correlated with the probability of encountering poor environmental conditions, we compared the corticosterone stress response (e.g. initial plasma concentrations at the time of capture and 30 min later) in dark-eyed juncos overwintering in Mississippi (MS), USA, near the southern limit of their wintering range, with juncos overwintering in New York (NY), USA, near the northern limit of their wintering range. During two winters, 22 males and one female were sampled in NY; 13 males, 12 females and one bird of undetermined sex were sampled in MS. Not unexpectedly, NY birds carried greater fat reserves that resulted in a significantly higher value of energetic condition (mass corrected for wing cord cubed). There was no difference between the two winters sampled at either site, nor was there an effect of sex on patterns of corticosterone secretion in MS birds. With sexes pooled, MS and NY birds had similar baseline corticosterone levels. However, as predicted, NY birds exhibited significantly higher corticosterone concentrations 30 min after capture. These results support the hypothesis that birds wintering in less predictable, more extreme environments show a higher amplitude corticosterone response, which may enable them to adjust their behaviour and physiology more rapidly in response to environmental stressors such as storms. Adrenocortical sensitivity may be a part of the physiological milieu associated with differential migration in juncos; whether it results from endogenous differences in the migratory programmes of individuals or from acclimatization to local environmental conditions remains to be determined.

Abstract
The magnitude of the adrenocortical response to stress can be modulated by a variety of environmental and physiological factors, such as daylength and body condition. To determine the consequences of this modulation for the organism, one also needs to investigate behavioral sensitivity to glucocorticoids. We examined the behavioral response of Gambel's white-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii) to elevated glucocorticoids. Using a behavioral assay in which a rapid and transient dose of corticosterone (CORT: the avian glucocorticoid) rapidly increases perch hopping, we first investigated the photoperiodic regulation of this behavioral response. Intermediate levels of CORT ( approximately 24 ng/ml), which increased activity in sparrows exposed to a long-day (breeding) photoperiod, had no behavioral effect in sparrows exposed to a short-day (winter) photoperiod. Hence, the neural mechanisms which regulate the behavioral response to CORT appear to be less sensitive under a winter photoperiod. Using the same behavioral assay, we also measured a dose-response curve for CORT's effects on activity in sparrows exposed to the long-day photoperiod. Intermediate levels (24 and 40 ng/ml) increased activity to threefold background levels, whereas high physiological levels (65 and 97 ng/ml) had no effect. Given that the behavioral response does not increase linearly with CORT, we can no longer assume that modulation of the adrenocortical response to stress will result in linear changes in behavior.

Abstract
Progesterone is a versatile hormone showing an ample variety of effects. One of the numerous functions attributed to progesterone is the modulation of vitellogenesis in oviparous vertebrates. As a prerequisite for the possible involvement of progesterone in vitellogenesis modulation, we investigated the presence of a progesterone receptor (PR) in the liver of the female green frog Rana esculenta. 3H-Progesterone (3H-P) binding activity was found in both cytosol and nuclear extract of the liver of Rana esculenta. The progesterone-binding moiety showed the typical characteristics of a true receptor, such as high affinity, low capacity, and specificity for progesterone. It also bound to DNA-cellulose and was eluted with a linear salt gradient at a concentration of 0.05 M of NaCl. The progesterone-binding moiety was down regulated by steroid hormones, in that ovariectomy resulted in a significant increase, in both cytosol and nuclear extract, of 3H-P binding activity with respect to intact females. On the contrary, 3H-P binding activity was almost undetectable after estradiol and/or progesterone treatment. The progesterone binding moiety of Rana esculenta was analyzed by Western blotting with the aid of a monoclonal antibody raised against the subunits A and B of the chicken PR. An immunoreactive band of about 67 kDa was observed in the liver of both intact and treated females. The 67 kDa band showed an increased intensity in ovariectomized animals, while it was faint following treatment with estradiol and/or progesterone. This is the first report on the presence of a progesterone receptor (PR) in the liver of an amphibian. PR of Rana esculenta is down regulated by estradiol and/or progesterone and shows peculiar immunological and biochemical characteristics, which make it rather different from the PR of other vertebrates.

Abstract
Several studies on free-living birds have shown a change in corticosterone secretion (elevated baseline levels and a reduced corticosterone response to stress) during migration. It was not known, however, if this change was concurrent with the development of migratory condition or if it was an independent response to unknown environmental stressors experienced by the birds prior to capture. In this study, a Neotropical annual migrant, the yellow-rumped warbler (Dendroica coronata), held under controlled laboratory conditions, was used to test the Migration Modulation Hypothesis (MMH): during the migratory period migrants exhibit (1) elevated baseline corticosterone to facilitate migratory fattening and (2) a reduced corticosterone stress response, a means by which skeletal muscle needed for migration can be protected against catabolism by high levels of corticosterone. Fifteen hatching-year warblers were maintained on insect larvae and water ad libitum for 43 weeks, experiencing two transitions from a short- to long-day photoperiod to bring them into spring migratory condition. Corticosterone profiles comprising three blood samples from each individual (baseline at the time of initial disturbance and 30 and 60 min later), body mass, fat reserves, molt, and state of cloacal protuberance (males only) were measured at key intervals throughout the study. Over the entire study, mean baseline corticosterone levels were positively correlated with mean body mass, which increased predictably in response to long days. Individual baseline corticosterone was not correlated with individual body mass at any time. During periods when the birds were lean and held on short days, the corticosterone stress profiles were characterized by low initial hormone concentration followed by a significant increase in corticosterone with handling time. In response to long days, the warblers showed a significant increase in body mass and fat reserves concurrent with corticosterone stress profiles characterized by significantly elevated baseline levels and no further increase in corticosterone with handling time. These results support both components of the MMH illustrating changes in corticosterone secretion concurrent with migratory fattening but the exact nature of this change is unknown.

In the green frog, Rana esculenta, a peculiar feature of female reproductive endocrinology is an high level of circulating testosterone. Although several hypotheses have been set out to explain this phenomenon, the testosterone specific roles in female anuran have not been yet fully explored. This study results propose a testosterone implication in liver vitellogenin synthesis control, since in ovariectomized frogs the hormone induces an increase of circulating vitellogenin. The testosterone action could depend on its local conversion to 17beta-estradiol by aromatase which is present in frog liver tissue. Liver aromatase activity ranges from 7.5 to 26 fmoles E2 formed/mg protein/h and results higher as long as liver is engaged in vitellogenin synthesis. Aromatase activity seems depend on testosterone since it decreases after ovariectomy and is restored by testosterone injection in ovariectomized frogs. In green frog liver, testosterone binding molecules are present both in cytosol and nuclei. These molecule binding properties (Kd and Bmax in nM range; t 1/2 = 85 min; specificity) are in line with those of testosterone receptor of other lower vertebrate target tissue. In liver nuclei, testosterone receptor level undergoes modification throughout the sexual cycle which almost coincides with that of plasma testosterone level and liver aromatase activity. This could indicate that the testosterone induction of liver aromatase in frogs is via the testosterone receptor, as reported for aromatase of mammalian brain tissues.

Abstract
We examined possible mechanisms underlying seasonal stress modulation in Lapland longspurs (Calcarius lapponicus), a species that breeds and molts (the energetically costly replacement of feathers) in the Alaskan Arctic. Free-living Lapland longspurs show dramatically reduced maximal corticosterone release during molt compared with the breeding season, an effect lost in captive birds. Neither changes in corticosterone binding proteins nor the overall condition of the bird (assessed by weight and fat storage) can explain different seasonal corticosterone responses. Adrenal insensitivity also does not fully explain reduced maximal output because exogenous ACTH enhanced corticosterone release during molt. Exogenous ACTH in molting birds, however, cannot stimulate corticosterone to stress-induced levels during breeding, implying reduced adrenal capacity. Lapland longspur pituitaries appeared to respond to exogenous corticotropin-releasing factor, arginine vasotocin, and mesotocin (the avian equivalents of arginine vasopressin and oxytocin) during molt, suggesting that a mechanism upstream of the pituitary blunts corticosterone release. Taken together, these results indicate that seasonal modulation of corticosterone release in this species is controlled at multiple sites in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Abstract
The corticosterone response to capture and handling was measured in free-living red-eared slider turtles, Trachemys scripta elegans. To determine the ability of this species to exhibit this endocrine response, slider turtles were bled at the time of removal from hoop nets and again at 30 and 60 min following capture to create plasma profiles of acute corticosterone secretion from individuals. Plasma corticosterone concentration increased significantly with handling time. The greatest rise in corticosterone was within the first 30 min following capture and handling, with this rate of increase declining over the next 30 min of restraint. There was no correlation between corticosterone levels at the time of capture and the length of time it took to get the sample if the sample was taken within the first 10 min after capture. However, when these samples were included with those taken from other turtles sampled 11 to 25 min after capture, hormone levels were significantly correlated with handling time. This suggests that the critical time to obtain an initial sample that best represents the predisturbance level in slider turtles is within 10 min. There was no correlation between the turtles' energetic condition and initial corticosterone concentrations. Plasma corticosterone values at all sampling times were comparable to those observed in other reptile species. The results from this study may be used to investigate the effects of unpredictable resources on reproductive success and survival in freshwater turtles.

Abstract
Adult female specimens of Xenopus laevis were exposed to diluted artificial seawater for up to 1 week. Statistically significant increases were observed in serum levels of aldosterone and corticosterone, concomitant with a drop in levels of prolactin (PRL) receptors in the cell membranes of the epidermis and kidney, which can be taken as an indicator of the levels of circulating PRL. The changes in hormone levels were detected after 1 day, being followed by a gradual restoration of the initial mean levels of these hormones when the exposure to hyperosmotic stress was extended for up to 2 or 7 days. Comparison of the above results with those previously obtained in Xenopus after longer exposure (15 days) to brackish water substantiates the necessity of recording possible initial fluctuations, as well as any changes that occur over the course of longer exposure during which time adaptation to environmental changes are likely to take place. The reverse responses, which may be not independent of one another, in terms of levels of corticoids and PRL in the animals exposed to hyperosmotic stress, are discussed. A survey of the literature suggests that, in Xenopus, as in the case of other less strictly water-dwelling amphibians, PRL is one of the hormones required for life in fresh water.

Abstract
Plasma patterns of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) and sex hormones (progesterone, androgens and 17 beta-estradiol) have been studied in the female crested newt, Triturus carnifex (Laur.), during the annual sexual cycle. The effects of exogenous PGF2 alpha on sex hormones were determined. In addition, the effects of one week's captivity on plasma PGF2 alpha and sex hormones were reported. PGF2 alpha plasma level peaked in April, was low in summer, and progressively increased during the autumn to peak again in December. The April PGF2 alpha coincided with a 17 beta-estradiol rise, and with a progesterone drop. The autumn PGF2 alpha increase was coupled to a 17 beta-estradiol rise, and therefore it has been tentatively related to ovary and oviduct development. In newts collected in April, moreover, a PGF2 alpha-dependent 17 beta-estradiol synthesis could occur, since PGF2 alpha injection induced a significant 17 beta-estradiol plasma increase. These findings led us to suppose that PGF2 alpha intervenes in spring breeding season termination through the induction of a 17 beta-estradiol synthesis as in other amphibian species. PGF2 alpha injection caused a progesterone decrease, probably by inducing corpora lutea lysis. The patterns of plasma sex hormones were consistent with the results reported for the same newt species.
