Do kestrels adjust their parental effort to current or future benefit in a temporally varying environment?

Home range size and habitat quality affect breeding success but not parental investment in barn owl males

Life-history theory predicts that parents should balance their limited resources to maximize lifetime fitness, limiting their investment in current reproduction when the fitness value of current progeny is lower than that gained by producing offspring in the future. Here, we examined whether male barn owls (Tyto alba) breeding in low-quality habitats increased their parental effort to successfully complete offspring rearing or limited their investment by paying a fitness cost while saving energy for the future. We equipped 128 males with GPS devices between 2016 and 2020 to collect information on home range size, habitat composition, food provisioning rate to the brood and nightly distances covered. We also recorded nestlings’ growth and survival, as well as males’ body mass variation and future reproductive success. Males living in lower-quality habitats exploited bigger home ranges compared to individuals whose nests were settled in prey-rich habitats. They fed their brood less frequently, while covering longer nightly distance, resulting in a slower growth of late-hatched nestlings and ultimately in a lower fledging success. As males did not differ in body mass variation or future reproductive success our findings suggest that males hunting in home ranges with less prey-rich structures do not jeopardize future reproduction by investing disproportionately larger resources to compensate for their current low home range quality.

Fitness consequences of peak reproductive effort in a resource pulse system

The age trajectory of reproductive performance of many iteroparous species features an early - life increase in performance followed by a late - life senescent decline. The largest contribution of lifetime reproductive success is therefore gained at the age at which reproductive performance peaks. Using long term data on North American red squirrels we show that the environmental conditions individuals encountered could cause variation among individuals in the “height” and timing of this peak, contributing to life history variation and fitness in this population that experiences irregular resource pulses. As expected, high peak effort was positively associated with lifetime reproductive output up to a high level of annual effort. Furthermore, individuals that matched their peak reproductive effort to an anticipated resource pulse gained substantial fitness benefits through recruiting more offspring over their lifetime. Individual variation in peak reproductive effort thus has strong potential to shape life history evolution by facilitating adaptation to fluctuating environments.

Behavioural and energetic responses to body state in male and female barn swallows (Hirundo rustica)

Females and males often have different roles when attending young. The factors responsible for shifts in the balance of effort when both sexes provision their young are not clear. This study asked if sex-specific behaviour and provisioning rules in barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) were dependent on individual body-state or affected by the state of their provisioning partner. To assess this male and female barn swallows underwent overnight warming manipulations whilst provisioning 10-14 day old nestlings, a time when energetic demands are maximal. The overnight warming treatment reduced thermoregulatory costs and provided birds with extra energy reserves at dawn. Only one member of a pair was manipulated in this way, whilst their partners were left un-manipulated to assess their response to their partner's elevated body-state. The energetic and behavioural responses to these manipulations were followed over the subsequent 24-h. I found that warmed male and female barn swallows increased their energy expenditure and nest visitation rates to the same extent after manipulation, implying a trade-off in resource allocation, which was biased towards reproductive effort. There was no effect of gender. Males paired with manipulated females showed no energetic or behavioural adjustments, however, females paired with manipulated males tended to increase both energy expenditure and nest visitation. This study provides evidence that energy reserves constrain behaviour, and that male and female swallows normally follow the same state-dependent rules when provisioning young.

Parental effort of American kestrels: the role of variation in brood size

Brood size has the potential to determine the allocation of resources between parents and offspring, as well as influence the relative contributions of each sex to parental effort. However, it is unclear whether brood size is the proximate determinant of parental effort, or conversely whether parental effort is the proximate factor to which brood size is adjusted. If brood size determines parental effort, then theory suggests that parental effort should vary with experimental changes in brood size. In contrast, if parental effort determines brood size, then parental effort is expected to be independent of experimental variation in brood size. To distinguish between these hypotheses, we experimentally reduced brood sizes of American kestrels (Falco sparverius). Our results suggest that male parents responded to brood-size variation and adjusted their provisioning behaviour accordingly. Conversely, female parents did not adjust provisioning in response to brood size, and as a result, offspring in reduced broods received more food on a per-nestling basis. However, condition and survival of offspring were similar in reduced broods and control young, which may have been the result of larger food requirements of small broods, owing to increased thermoregulatory costs compared with control broods. Female parents with reduced broods also did not brood offspring more often, further suggesting that females do not respond to variation in brood size. We conclude that the proximate determinants of parental effort are sex-specific in American kestrels: for males, brood size determines behaviour, whereas for females, behaviour may be a proximate factor determining brood size.

Reproductive Effort and Reproductive Values in Periodic Environments

Life-history theory concerns the optimal spread of reproduction over an organism's life span. In variable environments, there may be extrinsic differences between breeding periods within an organism's life, affecting both offspring and parent and giving rise to intergenerational trade-offs. Such trade-offs are often discussed in terms of reproductive value for parent and offspring. Here, we consider parental life-history optimization in response to varying offspring values of a population regulated by territoriality, where the quality of the environment varies periodically. Periods are interpreted as either within-year (seasonality) or between-years variation (cyclicity). The evolutionarily stable strategy in a general model with two-phased periodicity in the environment can generate either higher or lower effort in the more favorable of the two phases; hence knowing survival prospects of offspring does not suffice for predicting reproductive effort-the future of all descendants and the parent must be tracked. We also apply our method to data on the Ural owl Strix uralensis, a species preying on cyclically fluctuating voles. The observed dynamics are best predicted by assuming delayed reproductive costs and Type II functional response. Accounting for varying offspring values can lead to cases where both reproductive effort and recruitment of offspring are higher in the phase when voles are not maximally abundant, a pattern supported by our data.
