Shedding Light on Cast Shadows: An Investigation of Perceived Ground Contact in AR and VR

Virtual objects in augmented reality (AR) often appear to float atop real world surfaces, which makes it difficult to determine where they are positioned in space. This is problematic as many applications for AR require accurate spatial perception. In the current study, we examine how the way we render cast shadows-which act as an important monocular depth cue for creating a sense of contact between an object and the surface beneath it-impacts spatial perception. Over two experiments, we evaluate people's sense of surface contact given both traditional and non-traditional shadow shading methods in optical see-through augmented reality (OST AR), video see-through augmented reality (VST AR), and virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays. Our results provide evidence that nontraditional shading techniques for rendering shadows in AR displays may enhance the accuracy of one's perception of surface contact. This finding implies a possible tradeoff between photorealism and accuracy of depth perception, especially in OST AR displays. However, it also supports the use of more stylized graphics like non-traditional cast shadows to improve perception and interaction in AR applications.

Monocular Perception of Equidistance: The Effects of Viewing Experience and Motion-generated Information

SIGNIFICANCE

Using static depth information, normal observers monocularly perceived equidistance with high accuracy. With dynamic depth information and/or monocular viewing experience, they perceived with high precision. Therefore, monocular patients, who were adapted to monocular viewing, should be able to perceive equidistance and perform related tasks.

PURPOSE

This study investigated whether normal observers could accurately and precisely perceive equidistance with one eye, in different viewing environments, with various optical information and monocular viewing experience.

METHODS

Sixteen normally sighted observers monocularly perceived the distance (5 to 30 m) between a target and the self and replicated it either in some hallways that contained ample static monocular depth information but had a limited field of view or on a lawn that contained less depth information but had a large field of view. Participants remained stationary or walked 5 m before performing the task, as a manipulation of the availability of dynamic depth information. Eight observers wore eye patches for 3 hours before the experiment and gained monocular viewing experience, whereas the others did not. Both accuracy and precision were measured.

RESULTS

As long as static monocular depth information was available, equidistance perception was effectively accurate, despite minute underestimation. Perception precision was improved by prior monocular walking and/or experience with monocularity. Accuracy and precision were not affected by the viewing environments.

CONCLUSIONS

Using static and dynamic monocular depth information and/or with monocular experience, normal observers judged equidistance with reliable accuracy and precision. This implied that patients with monocular vision, who are better adapted than participants of this study, should also be able to perceive equidistance and perform distance-dependent tasks in natural viewing environments.

The effect of apparent distance on peripheral target detection

Previous research suggests that peripheral target detection is modulated by viewing distance and distance simulated by pictorial cues and optic flow. In the latter case, it is unclear what cues contribute to the effect of distance. The current study evaluated the effect of distance on peripheral detection in a virtual three-dimensional environment. Experiments 1–3 used a continuous, dynamic central task that simulated observers traveling either actively or passively through a virtual environment following a car. Peripheral targets were flashed on checkerboard-covered walls to the left and right of the path of motion, at a near and a far distance from the observer. The retinal characteristics of the targets were identical across distances. Experiment 1 found more accurate and faster detection for near targets compared to far targets, especially for larger eccentricities. Experiment 2 equated the predictability of target onset across distances and found the near advantage for larger eccentricities in accuracy but a much smaller effect in reaction time (RT). Experiment 3 removed the checkerboard background implemented in Experiments 1 and 2, and Experiment 4 manipulated several static, monocular cues. Experiments 3 and 4 found that the variation in the density of the checkerboard backgrounds could explain the main effect of distance on accuracy but could not completely account for the interaction between target distance and eccentricity. These results suggest that attention is modulated by target distance, but the effect is small. Finally, there were consistent divided attention costs in the central car-following task but not the peripheral detection task.

Effects of changes in size, speed, and distance on the perception of curved 3-D trajectories

Previous research on the perception of 3-D object motion has considered time to collision, time to passage, collision detection, and judgments of speed and direction of motion but has not directly studied the perception of the overall shape of the motion path. We examined the perception of the magnitude of curvature and sign of curvature of the motion path for objects moving at eye level in a horizontal plane parallel to the line of sight. We considered two sources of information for the perception of motion trajectories: changes in angular size and changes in angular speed. Three experiments examined judgments of relative curvature for objects moving at different distances. At the closest distance studied, accuracy was high with size information alone but near chance with speed information alone. At the greatest distance, accuracy with size information alone decreased sharply, but accuracy for displays with both size and speed information remained high. We found similar results in two experiments with judgments of sign of curvature. Accuracy was higher for displays with both size and speed information than with size information alone, even when the speed information was based on parallel projections and was not informative about sign of curvature. For both magnitude of curvature and sign of curvature judgments, information indicating that the trajectory was curved increased accuracy, even when this information was not directly relevant to the required judgment.

Changes in angular size and speed affect the judged height of objects moving over a ground surface

Kersten et al (1997, Perception 26 171-192) showed that the perceived path of an object moving over a ground surface can be manipulated by changing the path of a shadow. Using a scene similar to Kersten's "ball-in-a-box" scene, we investigated the effect of angular size and angular speed in determining the perceived height of a moving sphere when optical contact (the position at which the object contacted the ground in the image) indicated that the sphere was receding in depth. In four experiments we examined both the effects of changes in size and speed, and the effects of constant levels of size and speed. Increases in angular size or speed during a motion sequence resulted in judgments of increased height above the ground plane. The angular size at the end of the motion sequence was also important in determining judged height, with greater height judged with larger final sizes.

Background Surface and Horizon Effects in the Perception of Relative Size and Distance

The projected height of an object in a scene relative to a ground surface influences its perceived size and distance, but the effect of height should change when the object is moved above the horizon. In four experiments, observers judged relative size or relative distance for pairs of objects varying in height with respect to the horizon. Higher objects equal in projected size were judged larger below the horizon, but the relative size effect was reversed either when one object was on the horizon and one was above the horizon or when both objects were above the horizon. With the real horizon not explicitly present in the display, relative size judgments were affected both by the boundary of the visible surface and the vanishing point implied by the converging lines. For relative distance judgments, the higher object was judged more distant regardless of the height of the objects relative to the perceptual horizon, resulting in a reversal of the relation between size and distance judgments for objects above the horizon.

The ground dominance effect in the perception of relative distance in 3-D scenes is mainly due to characteristics of the ground surface

Previously, we (Bian, Braunstein, and& Andersen, 2005) reported a dominance effect of the ground plane over other environmental surfaces in determining the perceived relative distance of objects in 3-D scenes. In the present study, we conducted three experiments to investigate whether this ground dominance is due to inherent differences between ground and ceiling surfaces, or to the locations of these surfaces in the visual field. In Experiment 1, two vertical posts were positioned between a ground surface and a ceiling surface, and optical contact was manipulated so that the two surfaces provided contradictory information about the relative distances of the posts from the participant. The two surfaces were either both above, both below, or one above and one below fixation. In Experiment 2, only one surface was presented, either above, below, or at fixation. In Experiment 3, the posts were replaced by two red dots, and the eccentricity of the optical contact on the two surfaces was equated in each of five locations in the visual field. In all three experiments, participants judged which of the two objects appeared to be closer. Overall, we found a higher proportion of judgments consistent with a ground surface than with a ceiling surface in all locations, indicating that the ground dominance effect is mainly due to characteristics of the ground surface, with location in the visual field having only a minor effect.
