Episodic Representation of Diagnostic and Non-Diagnostic Object Color

The best game in town: The reemergence of the language-of-thought hypothesis across the cognitive sciences

Mental representations remain the central posits of psychology after many decades of scrutiny. However, there is no consensus about the representational format(s) of biological cognition. This paper provides a survey of evidence from computational cognitive psychology, perceptual psychology, developmental psychology, comparative psychology, and social psychology, and concludes that one type of format that routinely crops up is the language-of-thought (LoT). We outline six core properties of LoTs: (i) discrete constituents; (ii) role-filler independence; (iii) predicate-argument structure; (iv) logical operators; (v) inferential promiscuity; and (vi) abstract content. These properties cluster together throughout cognitive science. Bayesian computational modeling, compositional features of object perception, complex infant and animal reasoning, and automatic, intuitive cognition in adults all implicate LoT-like structures. Instead of regarding LoT as a relic of the previous century, researchers in cognitive science and philosophy-of-mind must take seriously the explanatory breadth of LoT-based architectures. We grant that the mind may harbor many formats and architectures, including iconic and associative structures as well as deep-neural-network-like architectures. However, as computational/representational approaches to the mind continue to advance, classical compositional symbolic structures - that is, LoTs - only prove more flexible and well-supported over time.

Effects of Transient and Nontransient Changes of Surface Feature on Object Correspondence

Object correspondence is a fundamental problem in perception. Classic theories hold that the computation of correspondence is solely based on spatiotemporal information. Recent research showed that surface features also play an important role. However, the surface features of objects in many studies did not change throughout a trial. This study investigated the effect of feature change on object correspondence using the object-reviewing paradigm. Two moving objects underwent transient feature changes on color dimension (Experiment 1A) or a combination of three dimensions (Experiment 2A). Moreover, the objects moved behind four occluders to make the feature change nontransient (Experiments 1B and 2B). Object-specific preview benefits were reduced or eliminated when feature changes were transient, but the benefits were not affected when feature changes were nontransient. The effects of transient versus nontransient changes of surface feature in object correspondence are discussed.

Saccade latency reveals episodic representation of object color

While previous studies suggest that identity, but not color, plays a role in episodic object representation, such studies have typically used tasks in which only identity is relevant, raising the possibility that the results reflect task demands, rather than the general principles that underlie object representation. In the present study, participants viewed a preview display containing one (Experiments 1 and 2) or two (Experiment 3) letters, then viewed a target display containing a single letter, in either the same or a different location. Participants executed an immediate saccade to fixate the target; saccade latency served as the dependent variable. In all experiments, saccade latencies were longer to fixate a target appearing in its previewed location, consistent with a bias to attend to new objects rather than to objects for which episodic representations are being maintained in visual working memory. The results of Experiment 3 further demonstrate, however, that changing target color eliminates these latency differences. The results suggest that color and identity are part of episodic representation even when not task relevant and that examining biases in saccade execution may be a useful approach to studying episodic representation.

The influence of location and visual features on visual object memory

In five experiments, we examined the influence of contextual objects' location and visual features on visual memory. Participants' visual memory was tested with a change detection task in which they had to judge whether the orientation (Experiments 1A, 1B, and 2) or color (Experiments 3A and 3B) of a target object was the same. Furthermore, contextual objects' locations and visual features were manipulated in the test image. The results showed that change detection performance was better when contextual objects' locations remained the same from study to test, demonstrating that the original spatial configuration is important for subsequent visual memory retrieval. The results further showed that changes to contextual objects' orientation, but not color, reduced orientation change detection performance; and changes to contextual objects' color, but not orientation, impaired color change detection performance. Therefore, contextual objects' visual features are capable of affecting visual memory. However, selective attention plays an influential role in modulating such effects.
