The effects of job satisfaction and psychological resilience on job performance among residents of the standardized residency training: a nationwide study in China

Importance of multimodal resident education curriculum for general surgeons: perspectives of trainers and trainees

PURPOSE

Satisfaction should be prioritized to maximize the value of education for trainees. This study was conducted with professors, fellows, and surgical residents in the Department of general surgery (GS) to evaluate the importance of various educational modules to surgical residents.

METHODS

A questionnaire was administered to professors (n = 28), fellows (n = 8), and surgical residents (n = 14), and the responses of the three groups were compared. Four different categories of educational curricula were considered: instructor-led training, clinical education, self-paced learning, and hands-on training.

RESULTS

The majority of surgeons regarded attending scrubs as the most important educational module in the training of surgical residents. However, while professors identified assisting operators by participating in surgery as the most important, residents assessed the laparoscopic training module with animal models as the most beneficial.

CONCLUSIONS

The best educational training course for surgical residents was hands-on training, which would provide them with several opportunities to operate and perform surgical procedures themselves.

Satisfaction with clinical pathway implementation versus job performance of clinicians: empirical evidence on the mediating role of work engagement from public hospitals in Sichuan, China

BACKGROUND

The job performance of clinicians is a clear indicator of both hospital capacity and the level of hospital service. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the effectiveness and quality of medical care. Clinical pathways are a systematic method of quality improvement successfully recommended by broader healthcare systems. Since clinicians play a key role in implementing clinical pathways in public hospitals, this study aims to investigate the effect of the satisfaction of clinicians in public hospitals with clinical pathway implementation on their job performance.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study design was used. Questionnaires were administered online. A total of 794 clinicians completed the questionnaires in seven tertiary public hospitals in Sichuan Province, China, of which 723 were valid for analysis. Questionnaires contained questions on social demographic characteristics, satisfaction with clinical pathway implementation, work engagement, and job performance. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses.

RESULTS

The satisfaction of clinicians in public hospitals with clinical pathway implementation was significantly positively correlated with work engagement (r = 0.570, P < 0.01) and job performance (r = 0.522, P < 0.01). A strong indirect effect of clinicians' satisfaction with clinical pathway implementation on job performance mediated by work engagement was observed, and the value of this effect was 0.383 (boot 95%CI [0.323, 0.448]).

CONCLUSION

The satisfaction of clinicians in public hospitals with clinical pathway implementation not only directly influences their job performance, but also indirectly affects it through the mediating variable of work engagement. Therefore, managers of public hospitals need to pay close attention to clinicians' evaluation and perception of the clinical pathway implementation. This entails taking adequate measures, such as providing strong organizational support and creating a favorable environment for the clinical pathway implementation. Additionally, focusing on teamwork to increase clinicians' satisfaction can further enhance job performance. Furthermore, managers should give higher priority to increasing employees' work engagement to improve clinicians' job performance.

Stress and job satisfaction over time, the influence of the managerial position: A bivariate longitudinal modelling of Wittyfit data

BACKGROUND

The managerial position affects stress and job satisfaction of workers, but these influences have always been studied separately.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to assess bivariate influence of the managerial position on workers' stress and job satisfaction and the inter-relationship of these indicators over time.

METHODS

We have analyzed data from workers who use the Wittyfit software, collected annually between 2018 and 2021. Stress and job satisfaction were evaluated by self-report questionnaires. Job position (manager or employee) was provided by the software's client companies.

RESULTS

Data of 704 workers were included in the study. Cross-sectional and longitudinal multivariate analyses revealed that managerial position improves job satisfaction (p<0.001), but not stress (p = 0.4). Overall, while workers' job satisfaction has improved (p<0.001), stress has remained stable over time (p = 0.3). Three latent groups, with specific evolutionary multi-trajectory of stress and job satisfaction were identified in the sample (entropy = 0.80). Age and seniority, but not gender tended to influence managers' and employees' indicators. Over time, stress and job satisfaction have tended to negatively interconnect, in cross-section and in a cross-lagged manner (p<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The managerial position improves workers' job satisfaction but has no effect on stress. Sociodemographics including age and seniority, but not gender, can affect this relationship. Stress and job satisfaction can influence each other, both cross-sectionally and over time. To be more effective, organizations should implement holistic strategies targeting multiple indicators.

The mediating role of work-related perceptions in the relationship between empathy and self-perceived clinical performance of residents in China: A multi-center cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to describe the association between empathy and residents' clinical performance and investigate whether work-related perception mediates this relationship.

METHODS

A multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted, including 1160 residents from 10 cities in Liaoning Province between March and October 2020. The participants completed various self-reported questionnaires regarding demographic characteristics, work-related perceptions, self-perceived clinical performance, and empathy. The relationships among empathy, work-related perception, and self-perceived clinical performance were examined using a structural equation model (SEM).

RESULTS

Of the 1160 residents, 961 (82.8 %) completed the questionnaires. The SEM path analysis showed that the direct effect of empathy on self-perceived clinical performance was significant and positive (β = 0.34, P < 0.001). There existed significant effects of empathy on work-related perception (β = 0.26, P < 0.001) and work-related perception on performance (β = 0.31, P < 0.001). The path coefficients of empathy concerning self-perceived clinical performance decreased significantly (β = 0.26, P < 0.001) when work-related perception was modeled as a mediator. The bias-corrected and accelerated bootstrap test revealed that work-related perception significantly mediated the relationship between empathy and self-perceived clinical performance (a*b = 0.08, BCa 95 % CI: 0.05-0.13). However, the correlation between the sub-scales of empathy and the items of self-perceived clinical performance was not substantial, even if most of them were statistically significant. The final SEM produced a good fit to the sample data, with CMIN/DF = 2.07 (P < 0.001), CFI = 0.99, GFI = 0.99, AGFI = 0.98, TLI = 0.98, NFI = 0.97, RMSEA (90 % CI) = 0.033 (0.017, 0.049), and SRMR = 0.024.

CONCLUSION

Empathy might significantly affect self-perceived clinical performance both directly and indirectly through the mediating role of work-related perception.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Efforts to improve clinical performance among residents might benefit from interventions for cultivating empathy and practices for improving work-related perceptions of residents.

The Managerial Role and Psychosocial Factors of Job Satisfaction: A Cross-sectional Study Among Wittyfit's Users

OBJECTIVE

Job satisfaction is an emerging indicator for measuring workers' occupational well-being; however, this has been poorly studied in managers. We aimed to explore job satisfaction between managers and employees and assess its factors.

METHODS

Data from Wittyfit's users were collected between January 2018 and February 2020. Volunteers anonymously provided their sociodemographic profile, their sense of job satisfaction, and their psychosocial feelings (ambiance, meaning, organization, recognition, values, work-life balance).

RESULTS

Data of 10,484 employees and 836 managers were collected. Job satisfaction was higher in managers than employees. All psychosocial factors had an impact on job satisfaction in workers. There was a higher prevalence of satisfied managers than employees. Managerial position and other sociodemographic variables influenced this prevalence.

CONCLUSIONS

Managers seem to be more satisfied than employees. Psychosocial and sociodemographic factors can influence workers' job satisfaction.

Psychometric properties of the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale in Chinese military personnel

Background

The 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10) is a widely used assessment of resilience. However, psychometric properties of the Chinese version of CD-RISC-10 have not been well investigated in a Chinese military personnel sample.

Methods

A total of 3,129 Chinese military personnel completed the CD-RISC-10, Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS). Among them, 528 recruits completed the CD-RISC-10, SAS, and SDS again after 3-month basic military training (BMT). Meanwhile, the commanding officers were asked to rate recruits' training performance on the training performance rating scale for recruits (TPRS). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was implemented to examine the single-factor model of the CD-RISC-10, and multigroup CFA was conducted to test measurement invariance across military rank (officers vs. enlisted), gender (male vs. female), and time (before and after 3-month BMT). Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω, and test-retest reliability was tested using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). The criterion-related validity of CD-RISC was evaluated using Pearson's correlation analysis between the CD-RISC-10 total score and SAS scores, SDS scores, and training performance ratings.

Results

The single-factor model of the CD-RISC-10 showed adequate fit (CFI = 0.955-0.970, TLI = 0.943-0.962, RMSEA = 0.059-0.072) in all examined subsamples (male, female, officer, and enlisted), and strict invariance was also supported across military rank, gender, and time (ΔCFI ≤ 0.001, ΔTLI ≤ 0.005, ΔRMSEA ≤ 0.006). The CD-RISC-10 showed good internal consistency in all subsamples (Cronbach's α of > 0.93 and McDonald's ω of > 0.93) and good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.88). Moreover, concurrent and predictive validity with the SAS and SDS scores were good (r = -0.68 to -0.49, p < 0.001). The resilience level of recruits at the beginning of BMT was significantly associated with training performance rated by supervisors after training (r = 0.29, p < 0.001).

Conclusion

The psychometric evidence reported in this study suggests that the CD-RISC-10 is a reliable and valid assessment of resilience and a potential predictor for mental health and military performance in Chinese military personnel.

The relationship between nurses' psychological resilience and job satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic: a descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study in Iran

BACKGROUND

Job satisfaction and factors affecting them are among the most important social issues. Resilience has a moderating role in the relationship between stress and diseases, so it can affect a person's job satisfaction because it enables a person to deal with adverse conditions. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nurses' psychological resilience and job satisfaction during the COVID-19 outbreak.

METHODS

This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study (2022) used convenience sampling to select 300 nurses. The Connor and Davidson Resilience Scale and Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire were used to collect data. The data were then analyzed with SPSS 22 and statistical methods (Independent t-test, Analysis of Variance, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Multiple linear regression).

RESULTS

The study results showed a positive and poor relationship between resilience, some of its dimensions (trust in individual instincts, tolerance of negative affect (p = 0.006), positive acceptance of change and secure relationships (p = 0.01), spiritual influences (p = 0.04)) and job satisfaction (p < 0.001). In other words, nurses' high level of resilience increased their job satisfaction and vice versa.

CONCLUSIONS

Enhancing the resilience of frontline nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic improved their job satisfaction and affected care provided by them. Nurse managers can control nurses' resilience and offer interventions that would strengthen it, especially at crises.

The association of sleep quality and burnout among Chinese medical residents under standardized residency training in a tertiary hospital

PURPOSE

To investigate the impact of sleep quality and chronotype on job burnout among medical residents under standardized residency training (SRT) in a tertiary hospital in Beijing, China.

METHODS

Medical residents in the Department of Internal Medicine of Peking Union Medical College Hospital were assessed by Morning and Evening Questionaire-5 (MEQ-5), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS). Factors associated with burnout were analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 142 respondents returned completed questionnaires. Burnout was present in 85 (60%) residents. Prevalence of high emotional exhaustion, high depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment were 51%, 28%, and 18%, respectively. The global PSQI score of residents was 5.9 ± 2.4, and the self-reported sleep duration was 6.2 ± 0.8 h/day. The MEQ-5 distribution skewed towards morningness, with a median score of 14.5 [13.0, 16.3]. Poor daytime function significantly predicted emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Chronotypes were not associated with any of the burnout components.

CONCLUSION

Sleep-related daytime dysfunction was strongly related to burnout. Strategies protecting the sleep of residents should be incorporated into the SRT programs for both efficiency and sustainability considerations.

Resilience and Job Satisfaction: Effect of Moderated Mediation on the Influence of interpersonal Justice on the Performance of Public Servants

The perception of interpersonal justice is one of the key resources for improving employees' performance intention. Elements such as employees' level of satisfaction or their self-perception of their ability to cope with problematic situations are key factors in this relationship according to the job demands-resources model. The objective of this study was to analyze how the perception of job satisfaction and the self-perception of resilience influence how interpersonal justice affects employee performance. A total of 315 public sector employees, who perform administrative and customer service tasks, have contributed to this study. The results show that the relationship between interpersonal justice and intra-role performance is completely mediated by job satisfaction; however, when we include the modulating effect of resilience between interpersonal justice and job satisfaction, the influence of the former is reduced as the self-perception of resilience. This indicates that the positive effects of justice are reduced as workers' self-perception of resilience increases.

Association of individual resilience with organizational resilience, perceived social support, and job performance among healthcare professionals in township health centers of China during the COVID-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND

Primary healthcare professionals were overworked and psychologically overwhelmed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Resilience is an important shield for individuals to cope with psychological stress and improve performance in crises. This study aims to explore the association of individual resilience with organizational resilience, perceived social support and job performance among healthcare professionals in township health centers of China during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

Data from 1,266 questionnaires were collected through a cross-sectional survey conducted in December 2021 in Shandong Province, China. Descriptive analysis of individual resilience, organizational resilience, perceived social support, and job performance was conducted. Pearson correlation analysis was used to examine the correlations among these variables, and structural equation modeling was performed to verify the relationships between these variables.

RESULTS

The score of individual resilience was 101.67 ± 14.29, ranging from 24 to 120. Organizational resilience (β = 0.409, p < 0.01) and perceived social support (β = 0.410, p < 0.01) had significant direct effects on individual resilience. Individual resilience (β = 0.709, p < 0.01) had a significant direct effect on job performance. Organizational resilience (β = 0.290, p < 0.01) and perceived social support (β = 0.291, p < 0.01) had significant indirect effects on job performance.

CONCLUSION

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the individual resilience of healthcare professionals in township health centers was at a moderate level. Organizational resilience and perceived social support positively affected individual resilience, and individual resilience positively affected job performance. Furthermore, individual resilience mediated the effect of organizational resilience and perceived social support on job performance. It is recommended that multiple stakeholders work together to improve the individual resilience of primary healthcare professionals.

Relationships between job satisfaction, organizational commitment, burnout and job performance of healthcare professionals in a district-level health care system of Shenzhen, China

BACKGROUND

Existing research indicates that job satisfaction has effects on job performance, but little evidence exists about the mechanism through which the satisfaction-performance association operates. This study aims to examine the effect of job satisfaction on job performance in a district-level health care system of China and to explore the effect mechanism mediated by organizational commitment and burnout.

METHODS

Cluster sampling was used in this study. All healthcare professionals in the Nanshan Medical Group, who were at work in the last 3 months and able to complete online questionnaire independently were invited to participate the anonymous online survey. Job satisfaction, organizational commitment, burnout and job performance were measured by tools, which have been validated in China. Descriptive statistics were used for the socio-demographic variables and the four job psychological variables. Pearson correlation coefficients was used to determine associations among each of the psychological variables. Linear regression was used to examine association between job performance and other three psychological variables. PROCESS macro was used to examine the mediation effects of organizational commitment and burnout on the association between job satisfaction and performance.

RESULTS

In total, 1,200 healthcare professionals completed the anonymous online survey. Job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job performance were positively correlated with one another, with burnout negatively correlated with them. Linear regression revealed that demographic characteristics, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and burnout explained 5, 6, 2, and 9% of the variance in job performance. Path analysis showed that the coefficient of the direct effect of job satisfaction on job performance was 0.18, the coefficients of the indirect effects of job satisfaction on job performance through organizational commitment and burnout were 0.17 and 0.37, respectively. The coefficients of the indirect effects of organizational commitment on job performance through burnout was -0.04, but it was not significant.

CONCLUSION

It is promising to improve job performance of providers in Chinese healthcare systems by improving job satisfaction and reducing burnout. Tailored support policies for female healthcare professionals, appropriate incentive mechanisms and improving multidisciplinary healthcare delivery are potential to improve job performance of healthcare professionals in integrated healthcare systems.

Predicting work performance and life satisfaction of nurses and physicians: The mediating role of social capital on self-efficacy and psychological resilience

PURPOSE

To examine the mediating role of social capital in the effects of self-efficacy and psychological resilience on nurses' and physicians' work performance and life satisfaction.

DESIGN AND METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, data were collected using an online questionnaire.

FINDINGS

Social capital had 0.04 indirect effects of general self-efficacy and psychological resilience on work performance, and accounted for 48% and 35% of the total effect, respectively. Social capital had 0.11 and 0.07 indirect effects of general self-efficacy and psychological resilience on life satisfaction, and accounted for 16% and 19% of the total effect, respectively.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

The study suggests the existence of social capital when nurses' and physicians' self-efficacy and psychological resilience affect their work performance and life satisfaction.

The role of resilience in the work-life interface: A systematic review

BACKGROUND: In an increasingly competitive marketplace, workers struggle to find a good balance between work and personal life. Difficulties in fulfilling the demands arising from these different domains may undermine employees’ well-being and job-related outcomes, thereby, impairing organizational productivity. OBJECTIVE: Does resilience play a relevant role in relation to work-life interface? And, if so, how is resilience related to its three facets (i.e., work-life conflict, enrichment, and balance)? To answer these questions, the current paper systematically reviews studies analysing the role of resilience in the work-life interface. METHODS: A key terms literature search was performed using multiple electronic databases (i.e., Scopus, PsycINFO, Web of Science, PubMed) without setting any publication date limitation. The review process followed the international PRISMA statement guidelines. A quality assessment was conducted using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. RESULTS: A total of 26 eligible papers published between 2009 and 2020 were included. Among these, 6 employed a qualitative design, while 20 studies adopted a quantitative design mostly examining resilience as antecedent. Data were predominantly collected in the healthcare sector. Resilience was mainly analysed in relation to work-life conflict. The most commonly used theoretical framework was Conservation of Resources theory. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, resilience was negatively associated with work-life conflict and positively related to both work-life balance and enrichment. A positive work-life balance can promote resilience, but resilience can also help workers to balance work and life. Additionally, resilience can protect from the negative effects of both work-life imbalance and work-life conflict on workers’ health and job-related outcomes.

Resilience and job satisfaction among out-of-hospital emergency medical service professionals: A cross-sectional multi-centric study

AIM

We aim to describe the relationship between job satisfaction and compare levels of resilience among out-of-hospital emergency medical service professionals.

BACKGROUND

The study of the impact of the working environment on health professionals has raised great interest. Job-related variables and resilience can be a protective factor against stressful and demanding events at work.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey comprising sociodemographic and job-related variables was conducted among 406 workers (doctors, nurses, psychologists, and ambulance technicians) from the out-of-hospital emergency medical system in Spain. Resilience was self-reported using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale.

RESULTS

Nursing professionals were less resilient compared with ambulance technicians (score difference 1.709, p = .008). As age increased, resilience was lower (r = -.118). Professionals with higher resilience scores were more satisfied in their work (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02-1.11), and professionals with higher psychological strength, gained from working with other colleagues, also showed greater job satisfaction (OR = 5.47, 95% CI: 2.55-11.73).

CONCLUSION

There was a positive association between resilience, job satisfaction and collaborative work. Professionals with greater psychological strength, gained from working with other colleagues, also showed higher levels of job satisfaction.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

Managers can use these results to influence the work environment to enhance job satisfaction and hence improve the resilience of the out-of-hospital emergency health care professionals.

The relationship between emotional intelligence, transformational leadership, and performance: a test of the mediating role of job satisfaction

Purpose

This paper examines the effect of job satisfaction on job performance among physicians in Iraq's public hospitals. It also determines the mediating role of job satisfaction on the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance. It further unveils the mediating role of job satisfaction on the nexus between transformational leadership and job performance. As physicians form the bulk of health-care professionals, their performance at work is crucial in determining patient satisfaction regarding care quality.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative approach with structural equation modelling via partial least squares (PLS-SEM) and bootstrapping estimation was used to test the hypotheses developed. A total of 157 responses were utilized in the data analysis.

Findings

Evidence from the study indicates that job satisfaction has a positive relationship with job performance. The study also provides evidence that job satisfaction plays a positive mediating role in the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance. Similarly, job satisfaction has a positive mediating effect on the nexus between transformational leadership and job performance among physicians in Iraq's public hospitals.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the relationship between physician job satisfaction and job performance in Iraqi public hospitals. Studies using Eastern samples are scarce, so the findings of this study will add to the body of knowledge from a cross-cultural standpoint.

Application Effect of the 6S Care Model in Sterilization in the Department of Stomatology and Its Impact on the Incidence of Nosocomial Infection

Objective

The study aimed to explore the effectiveness of the 6S care model in sterilization in department of stomatology and its impact on the incidence of nosocomial infections.

Methods

The infection surveillance indicators of the department of stomatology implementing the routine sterilization care model in 2019 were selected as the general group (including 140 patients and 140 cases of oral instrument kits for unpacking), and the infection surveillance indicators of the department of stomatology implementing the 6S care model in 2020 were selected as the 6S group (including 140 patients and 140 cases of oral instrument kits for unpacking). Analysis of the air culture qualification rate of the consultation room + operating room, medical equipment sterilization qualification rate, medical equipment damage rate, incidence of nosocomial infections, satisfaction of medical and nursing staff with instrument sterilization, and patient satisfaction with medical and nursing staff care services under different care models was carried out.

Result

The air culture pass rate of the consultation room + operating room in the 6S group was 96.43% (135/140), which was higher than 90.00% (126/140) in the general group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P > 0.05). The sterilization pass rate of medical devices in the 6S group was 100% (140/140), which was higher than 95.71% (134/140) in the general group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P > 0.05). The medical device damage rate in the 6S group was 0.71% (1/140), which was lower than 7.14% (10/140) in the general group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P > 0.05). The incidence of nosocomial infection in the 6S group was 0.71% (1/140), lower than 5.71% (8/140) in the general group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P > 0.05). In the 6S care model, the satisfaction score of 38 healthcare workers with the disinfection of instruments was (96.55 ± 2.40), which was higher than that of the general group (87.79 ± 3.14), and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P > 0.05). The total nursing satisfaction of the 6S group was 97.86% (137/140), which was higher than 91.43% (128/140) of the general group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P > 0.05).

Conclusion

The application of the 6S care model in the sterilization of the department of stomatology can significantly improve the passing rate of infection monitoring indicators in the department of stomatology, reduce the occurrence of medical device damage and nosocomial infection, and have high satisfaction among doctors and patients, which has the value of promotion.

Effects of Psychological Capital and Person-Job Fit on Hospitality Employees' Work-Family Conflict, Family-Work Conflict and Job Performance: The Moderating Role of Marital Status

Drawing on the conservation of resources (COR) theory and congruence theory, this study aims to investigate the influence of psychological capital (PsyCap) and person-job fit (PJ fit) on work-family conflict (WFC), family-work conflict (FWC) and job performance (JP), especially the moderating effect of marital status on hypothesized relationships between two directions of conflicts in the work-family interface and JP. Utilizing a two-stage design, this study surveyed 312 flight attendants employed by two international airline companies in Malaysia and used the structural equation modeling technique to test the hypothesized relationships. Findings showed that PsyCap could significantly alleviate two directions of WFC simultaneously and promote employees' JP. PJ fit was also identified to be an effective mitigator of WFC and FWC; however, a significant association between PJ fit and JP has not been found in this study. The findings further suggested that both WFC and FWC could mediate the association between PsyCap and JP. In addition, the fact that marital status resulted in disparity in the formation of JP was also evidenced. Airline companies should pay more attention to the positive impact of individual psychological determinants, such as PsyCap and PJ fit, which can effectively alleviate various issues in the work-family interface, thereby improving employees' JP.

Factors Influencing Residents' Specialty Choices and Satisfaction: Impact of Gender, Career Motivation and Life Goals

OBJECTIVE

Resident physicians working in medical specialties play an essential role in the makeup of the healthcare workforce. However, there is little theoretical understanding of how different medical specialties are perceived or how residents' choices are made. Many factors can influence resident physicians' choice of specialty. Previous studies have looked at personality differences within specialties, but were unable to describe the heterogeneity of viewpoints that existed within each specialty. Our objective, was to gather information about factors related to resident's life goals and career motivation as a means of improving residency program design and enhancing the college's advisory capacity.

DESIGN

Our study used a self-report anonymous questionnaire to characterize the relationship between resident physicians' preferences and their choice of specialty.

SETTING

King Saud University & King Saud University Medical City.

PARTICIPANTS

353 residents.

RESULTS

The majority of respondents reported that their current specialty was one of their top three choices. Almost half were satisfied with their residency program, and 24.1% were very satisfied. Gender, specialty, and workload demonstrated significant associations with residency program satisfaction.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings highlight the effects of career motivation and life goals for resident physicians in enhancing their career satisfaction. Ensuring that residents are able to find time for personal needs has important consequences for their perceptions of wellbeing and may be an effective strategy for promoting career satisfaction.

Social support, anxiety symptoms, and depression symptoms among residents in standardized residency training programs: the mediating effects of emotional exhaustion

BACKGROUND

Although studies indicate that social support is related to emotional exhaustion, depression symptoms, and anxiety symptoms, the underlying mechanism between those variables remains unknown.

METHODS

Based on a sample of 254 residents in standardized residency training programs, two mediation models were tested in which emotional exhaustion served as a mediator in the relationship between social support and anxiety symptoms/depression symptoms. We used the following self-reported questionnaires as instruments to collect data: zung self-rating depression scale, zung self-rating anxiety scale, social support rating scale, and emotional exhaustion scale.

RESULTS

In the final study sample, the mean age of the residents was 25.92 years old (SD =1.88), and a total of 41.3% were male, and 58.7% were female. This current study suggested that social support was proven to be a relevant factor affecting anxiety symptoms and depression symptoms. Particularly, the results also indicated that emotional exhaustion partially mediated the impact of social support on anxiety symptoms and depression symptoms among Chinese residents in the standardized residency training program.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study signifies that enhancements in social support and reduction of emotional exhaustion can directly or indirectly affect anxiety symptoms and depression symptoms among Chinese residents in the standardized residency training program. These findings will offer insight for health-sector managers to develop programs aimed at social support and adopt individual-level interventions and organization-level interventions to reduce emotional exhaustion.

Anxiety in Residents in China: Prevalence and Risk Factors in a Multicenter Study

PURPOSE

To explore the prevalence of major anxiety and its associated risk factors in residents in China.

METHOD

This multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2019 to February 2020; 1,343 residents from 8 hospitals in Northeast China were included in the final analysis (effective response rate of 86.48%). Demographic characteristics, dietary habits, life-related factors, work-related factors, and psychological characteristics were collected from participants via a self-reported questionnaire. This questionnaire measured sleep quality, physical activity, anxiety, perceived organizational support, psychological capital, and burnout. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals were determined using binary logistic regression. Cutoff values and the area under the curve were calculated for risk factors using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis.

RESULTS

Of participants, 441 (32.80%) reported anxiety symptoms and 133 (9.90%) reported major anxiety symptoms. Four independent risk factors for major anxiety were identified: poor sleep quality (OR = 1.282, P < .001) and 3 dimensions of burnout: higher emotional exhaustion (OR = 1.085, P < .001), higher depersonalization (OR = 1.064, P = .002), and reduced personal accomplishment (OR = 0.951, P < .001). The optimal cutoff values for these risk factors were 7, 10, 9, and 22 scores, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

This study found a considerable prevalence of major anxiety symptoms in residents in China and identified poor sleep quality and higher levels of burnout as having a close association with major anxiety. These findings enrich the existing literature on anxiety and demonstrate a critical need for additional studies that investigate intervention strategies to improve sleep quality and combat burnout, which could improve the mental health of residents.

Resilience Predicts the Trajectories of College Students' Daily Emotions During COVID-19: A Latent Growth Mixture Model

The objective of this study was to examine the association between resilience and trajectories of college students’ negative and positive affect during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 391 college students recruited from China completed a daily online negative and positive affect scale for 1 week, and their resilience was also measured. Profiles of brief trajectories of negative and positive affect over time were identified using the latent growth mixture model, and the effect of resilience on these trajectories was further explored. Two latent profiles of negative affect were found: a constant high negative affect profile and a slowly decreasing low negative affect profile, while three latent profiles of positive affect were identified: a slowly increasing high positive affect profile, a rapidly decreasing medium positive affect profile, and a constant medium positive affect profile. The optimism dimension of resilience predicted the membership in the various profiles significantly, whereas the prediction of tenacity and strength dimensions of resilience was not significant. Activities that promote resilience, especially optimism, should be included to improve the daily emotions of college students during COVID-19.
