Abstract
Research participation among vulnerable populations is often limited by the same socioeconomic factors that contribute to poor health. Identifying best practices for inclusion is critical to addressing health disparities. Urban public housing communities bear a disproportionate burden of chronic disease and may represent an opportunity to directly engage historically vulnerable populations in research designed to ultimately reduce that burden. We used mixed-method data to analyze recruitment effectiveness among a random sample of households (N = 380) across two public housing developments in Boston, MA who were approached for participation in a pre-COVID oral health study. Quantitative data from detailed recruitment tracking methods was analyzed to assess the relative efficiency of the methods employed. Field journals of study staff were qualitatively analyzed to identify community-specific recruitment barriers and facilitators. The participation rate among randomly sampled households was 28.6% (N = 131), with participation from primarily Hispanic (59.5%) or Black (26%) residents. Door-to-door knocking with response yielded the highest participation (44.8%), followed by responses to informational study flyers (31%). Primary barriers to enrollment included references to unemployment and employment variations, shift work, childcare responsibilities, time demands, and managing multiple appointments and social services. This study finds active, door-to-door knocking and return visits resolved barriers to participation, and reduced safety concerns and historic distrust. It's time to consider how best to adapt effective pre-COVID recruitment practices for utilization under current and future exposure conditions as effective recruitment of populations such as urban public housing residents into research is only becoming more important.

Abstract
PURPOSE Dementia and cardio-metabolic diseases share many risk factors. Management of these risk factors could contribute to successful aging, including the prevention of cardio-metabolic disease and dementia. The increasing use of smartphones offers an opportunity for remote preventive interventions. We provided a systematic review of telephone and smartphone-based interventions targeting the prevention of cognitive decline, dementia cardio-metabolic diseases or their risk factors among adults aged over 50 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS We searched Pubmed and the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform for experimental studies. We used the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (Version 2) for randomized trials or TREND (Transparent Reporting of Evaluations with Nonrandomized Designs) checklists to assess study quality for completed studies. RESULTS We analyzed 21 completed (3 for cognition, 18 for cardio-metabolic outcomes) and 50 ongoing studies (23 for cognition, 27 for cardio-metabolic outcomes). Smartphone interventions were used in 26 studies (3 completed, 23 ongoing). Other interventions involved telephone vocal support and text messaging. Few studies were at low risk of bias. There were heterogeneous cognitive and cardio-metabolic outcomes. The highest quality studies found no significant effects on cognition, and inconsistent results for HbA1c, blood pressure or physical activity. The lower quality-studies found effects on global cognition, working memory, memory and language and inconsistent results for clinical, biological or behavioral cardio-metabolic outcomes. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Despite the large number of commercially available mobile health applications, the magnitude of the scientific evidence base remains very limited. Based on published studies, the added value of telephone and smartphone tools for the prevention of cardio-metabolic diseases, cognitive decline or dementia is currently uncertain, but, there are several ongoing studies expected to be completed in the coming years.

Abstract
Objectives: In this study, we pilot-tested #CRCFree, a Facebook-based intervention aimed at reducing colorectal cancer (CRC) risk in rural Appalachian adults at risk for CRC. Methods: Participants were 56 rural Appalachian adults aged > 50 years. Daily #CRCFree Facebook posts addressed diet, physical activity, and CRC screening. Participants' sociodemographics, diet, body mass index, physical activity, and CRC screening status were measured pre- and post-intervention. The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) assessed dietary patterns. Facebook engagement was measured throughout the intervention. A post-intervention focus group evaluated intervention acceptability. Results: Participants were Caucasian, aged 58 ± 6 years, and predominantly female (66%). Post-intervention, HEI scores increased (49.9 ± 9.9 vs 58.6 ± 12.1, p = <.001), and DII scores decreased from baseline (2.8 ± 1.1 vs 1.6 ± 1.7, p = .002). There was no change in physical activity, BMI, or CRC screening status. Focus group participants found the intervention to be educational and motivating. Conclusions: These results provide preliminary evidence to support using Facebook to address CRC risk in this population. Participants were responsive to this intervention, and Facebook is a novel and accessible modality for health promotion.

Disparities in Health Information-Seeking Behaviors and Fatalistic Views of Cancer by Sexual Orientation Identity: A Nationally Representative Study of Adults in the United States. Abstract
Purpose: A lack of national data makes it difficult to estimate, but LGB adults appear to have a higher risk of cancer. Although limited research exists to explain the disparity, we aimed to explore potential differences in access to and utilization of health information and in cancer-related beliefs and behaviors. Methods: We used data from the Health Information National Trends Survey 5, Cycle 1 conducted from January 25 through May 5, 2017. Using survey-weighted logistic regression, we explored potential differences in health information-seeking behavior, trusted sources of health care information, engagement with the health care system, awareness of cancer risk factors, cancer fatalism, cancer-related health behaviors, and historical cancer screening between 117 LGB and 2857 heterosexual respondents. Results: LGB respondents were more likely to report looking for information about health or medical topics than heterosexual respondents (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 3.12; confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.07-9.06), but less likely to seek health information first from a doctor (aOR: 0.17; 95% CI: 0.06-0.50) after adjusting for age, race, and sex. LGB persons were less likely to report that they trust receiving health or medical information from friends and family and more likely to be worried about getting cancer (aOR: 2.30; 95% CI: 1.04-5.05). Conclusions: Our findings indicate a growing need for the production of tailored cancer prevention and control materials for members of sexual minority groups. More work is needed to understand barriers that LGB populations face in accessing this health information and building informative social support networks.
