Specific Learning Disorders and Special Educational Needs during COVID-19 Pandemic; Pilot Survey Study Performed in Local District Schools in Italy

Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are a group of heterogeneous health deficits frequently diagnosed in early childhood that cause difficulties in general intellectual functioning. In the last decades in Italy new laws have been developed to give practical guidelines for the best education plans for children with SLD. Background: The aim of our study was to determine the efficacy of the educational treatment on SLD in Primary and Secondary schools in the Italian city of Barletta. We acquired valuable data to evaluate Special Education Needs during COVID-19. Methods: Our study was conducted from April to June 2021, during the second “lockdown” period in Italy. A fact-finding survey was conducted to schools with a questionnaire provided to the teachers to acquire data on the SEN applied in the management of distance learning for children. Results: The study involved 15 male and 6 female pupils with SLD in Primary Schools and 18 male and 6 female in Secondary Schools. The schools participating in the study organized distance learning programs with a support teacher with a 1:1 ratio. Data showed that all children with SLD needed a support teacher. Conclusions: The findings of this pilot study suggest that distance learning programs are able to achieve adequate educational goals, despite the difficulties of the lockdown period.

A cross sectional survey to assess healthcare professionals' attitudes to and understanding of probiotics

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Consumers' belief in the benefits of probiotics is influenced by information they receive from healthcare professionals (HCPs). HCPs therefore need to be aware of the current evidence base in order to advise consumers appropriately. This survey aimed to establish HCP attitudes towards, and understanding of, the use of probiotics in healthcare.

METHODS

An online, cross-sectional survey was distributed to dietitians, paediatricians and General Practitioners (GPs) through three medical/health professional bodies: the British Dietetic Association (BDA), the European Society for Primary Care in Gastroenterology (ESPCG) and the European Paediatric Association (EPA). Paper copies of the survey were distributed at relevant medical congresses.

RESULTS

There were 1360 respondents representing all three groups of HCPs. The majority of respondents (86.3%, n = 1068) agreed that probiotics have a place in clinical medicine and were likely to recommend them (72.1%, n = 882), yet only 55.7% (n = 230) of dietitians were familiar with the World Health Organisation (WHO) definition of a probiotic. There was a positive, however, weak correlation between a high level of training and the likelihood of a respondent recommending a probiotic (r = 0.24, p < 0.005). Inadequate knowledge appeared to be a limiting factor in patients receiving evidence-based information and appropriate recommendations. The more concerns an HCP had, the less likely they were to recommend a probiotic regularly (p < 0.005). The majority (91%, n = 1099) of respondents cited a need for more education.

CONCLUSIONS

HCPs recognise that probiotics have a place in clinical medicine and would recommend them if they had more information to support informed decision-making within patient care.

Pilot study for the understanding and use of probiotics by different paediatric healthcare professionals working in different European countries

Background

Consumers’ conviction of the benefits of probiotics is influenced by their existing beliefs and by the information they receive from healthcare professionals. The attitude of healthcare professionals towards commercially available probiotics will, therefore, determine how trustworthy and beneficial these products are perceived by consumers. Furthermore, due to European Union legislation, companies are prohibited from displaying information on product packaging; therefore, consumers are dependent primarily on healthcare professionals for correct information and guidance on the use of these products. The aim of this pilot study was to explore the understanding and use of probiotics in clinical practice by professionals who are involved in child healthcare in different European countries and to assess how much they value the scientific evidence behind these products.

Methods

The study was performed using a cross-sectional, descriptive, 30-question online questionnaire circulated among healthcare professionals belonging to three professional categories that are typically involved in childhood probiotic prescription: paediatricians, dieticians and general practitioners. The questionnaire was developed using web-based standard guidelines, and the questions were modelled on those used in previously published probiotics studies.

Results

Overall, 27,287 healthcare professionals belonging to three major European scientific societies were contacted by the organizations participating in the study. In total, 1360 valid questionnaires were recorded, and the results were statistically analysed.

Conclusions

The results emphasize the importance for healthcare professionals to be properly educated and updated on probiotics. An improved knowledge about probiotics led to increased prescriptive confidence. To disseminate accurate information on probiotics, healthcare professionals look for appropriate and scientifically validated educational platforms to acquire information, explore concerns and barriers and look for positive approaches towards recommending probiotics.
