Investigating a process model for leader affective presence, interpersonal emotion regulation, and interpersonal behaviour in teams

Does maximum emotional intelligence facilitate team organizational citizenship behaviors: A perspective of integrating strategic core roles and multilevel theory

This study examines how maximum emotional intelligence (EI) members can contribute to the emergence of team-level organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). Based on integrating a strategic core role and multilevel theory, we developed and tested a model in which the maximum EI score in teams results in intrateam trust and consequently impacts team OCB and examined whether the indirect effect of maximum EI on team OCB through intrateam trust would be moderated by EI diversity and trust divergence in teams. The results from 129 project teams showed that the relationship of maximum EI with team OCB is mediated by intrateam trust and this relationship is stronger for lower levels of EI diversity and trust divergence than for higher levels of diversity and divergence. The findings advance our understanding of the role of EI in team settings. Our research has important implications for organizations attempting to develop the applied value of EI.

Emotion in teams: a scoping literature review

Purpose

The empirical findings of the roles of emotions in teams are mixed. This study, a scoping literature review, aims to synthesize extant research on the roles of emotions in work teams and offers future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

Sixty-nine empirical studies from the past ten years (2012 to 2021) were identified and reviewed. The authors then analyzed these 69 papers based on their research design, focus and nomological network of emotions.

Findings

The authors found that there is a clear increasing research trend of studying emotions in a team setting. In the extant literature, team emotions were studied from three major perspectives: emotions, emotional management and emotion measurement. The authors also summarized findings into the nomological network of team emotions. Last but not least, future research directions regarding the research context, focus and design and analysis were recommended.

Originality/value

The role of emotions in teams has not been extensively reviewed or synthesized, and the empirical findings are mixed. This paper synthesized the role of emotions in teams and critical factors that affect emotions in teams. In particular, the research recommendations for critical human resource development scholars cover three aspects: research context advancement, research focus advancement and research design and analysis advancement.

Leader Affective Presence and Feedback in Teams

Affective Presence refers to the consistent and stable feelings that an individual tends to leave in their interaction partners. Expanding previous research on the application of affective presence to individuals in the role of leaders in teams, in this study, I examine whether leaders’ feedback behavior is related to the emergence of their affective presence. Using a multisource survey design with a sample of employees from a technology organization, as expected, results indicated that leader feedback behavior directed to the characteristics that team members should ideally have to perform well (ought self feedback) is positively related to leaders’ positive affective presence. In contrast, feedback directed to compare team members’ performance with other team members’ performance (normative cues feedback) is positively associated with leaders’ negative affective presence. As such, the study contributes to having an understanding of the etiology of affective presence in the context of teams, also informing organizational practitioners about how to manage leader influences on team members.

Leader Interpersonal Emotion Regulation and Follower Performance

Abstract. Interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) refers to the actions of influencing other people’s feelings. We apply this construct to the context of leadership to determine whether leader IER may explain followers’ performance. Drawing on emotions-as-social-information theory, we argue that leader strategies to improve or worsen followers’ feelings would be related to followers’ affect and thereby to their performance. We tested these proposals using a multisource field study involving 31 leaders and 157 followers. Results from multilevel modeling supported a mediation model in which leaders’ attempts to improve their followers’ feelings enhance followers’ task performance via the followers’ experience of positive affect. In contrast, leaders’ use of affect-worsening actions was associated with the experience of followers’ negative affect, but not related to task performance. These findings contribute by expanding knowledge on the affective underpinnings of the leader–follower relationship and informing the development of leadership interventions aimed to foster employee performance.
