Abstract
Subjective memory evaluation is important for assessing memory abilities and complaints alongside objective measures. In research and clinical settings, questionnaires are used to examine perceived memory ability, memory complaints, and memory beliefs/knowledge. Although they provide a structured measure of self-reported memory, there is some debate as to whether subjective evaluation accurately reflects memory abilities. Specifically, the disconnect between subjective and objective memory measures remains a long-standing issue within the field. Thus, it is essential to evaluate the benefits and limitations of questionnaires that are currently in use. This review encompasses three categories of metamemory questionnaires: self-efficacy, complaints, and multidimensional questionnaires. Factors influencing self-evaluation of memory including knowledge and beliefs about memory, ability to evaluate memory, recent metamemory experiences, and affect are examined. The relationship between subjective and objective memory measures is explored, and considerations for future development and use of metamemory questionnaires are provided.

Abstract
Objective: This study investigated the relationship between perceived cognitive impairment, objective cognitive performance, and intrapersonal variables thought to influence ratings of perceived cognitive impairment. Method: Study sample comprised 194 nongeriatric adults who were seen in a general outpatient neuropsychology clinic for a variety of referral questions. The cognition subscale score from the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule served as the measure of perceived cognitive impairment. Objective cognitive performance was indexed via a composite score derived from a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Internalizing psychopathology was indexed via a composite score derived from anxiety and depression measures. Medical and neuropsychiatric comorbidities were indexed by the number of different ICD diagnostic categories documented in medical records. Demographics included age, sex, race, and years of education. Results: Objective cognitive performance was unrelated to subjective concerns, explaining <1% of the variance in perceived cognitive impairment ratings. Conversely, internalizing psychopathology was significantly predictive, explaining nearly one-third of the variance in perceived cognitive impairment ratings, even after accounting for test performance, demographics, and number of comorbidities. Internalizing psychopathology was also highly associated with a greater discrepancy between scores on perceived and objective cognitive measures among participants with greater cognitive concerns. Clinically significant somatic symptoms uniquely contributed to the explained variance in perceived cognitive impairment (by ∼13%) when analyzed in a model with internalizing symptoms. Conclusions: These findings suggest that perceived cognitive impairment may be more indicative of the extent of internalizing psychopathology and somatic concerns than cognitive ability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research examining the association between depressive symptoms and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has yielded conflicting results. This study aimed to examine the bidirectional association between depressive symptoms and MCI, and the extent to which this bidirectional association is moderated by gender and education. METHODS Data come from the US Health and Retirement Study over a 20-year period (older adults aged ≥50 years). Competing-risks regression is employed to examine the association between baseline high-risk depressive symptoms and subsequent MCI (N = 9317), and baseline MCI and subsequent high-risk depressive symptoms (N = 9428). Interactions of baseline exposures with gender and education are tested. RESULTS After full adjustment, baseline high-risk depressive symptoms were significantly associated with subsequent MCI (SHR = 1.20, 95%CI 1.08-1.34). Participants with baseline MCI are more likely to develop subsequent high-risk depressive symptoms than those without baseline MCI (SHR = 1.16, 95%CI 1.01-1.33). Although gender and education are risk factors for subsequent depression and MCI, neither moderates the bidirectional association. LIMITATIONS Items used to construct the composite cognitive measure are limited; selection bias due to missing data; and residual confounding. CONCLUSIONS Our study found a bidirectional association between depressive symptoms and MCI. High-risk depressive symptoms are related to a higher risk of subsequent MCI; and MCI predicts subsequent high-risk depression. Though neither gender nor education moderated the bidirectional association, public health interventions crafted to reduce the risk of depression and MCI should pivot attention to older women and those with less formal education.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) has increasing prevalence with age. Both objective measures of cognitive dysfunction and subjective report of cognitive difficulties related to MDD are often thought to worsen with increasing age. However, few studies have directly evaluated these characteristics across the adult lifespan. METHODS Participants included 23,594 adults completing objective and subjective measures of cognition on an online research registry. Linear regression including interactions of age group with depression was used to evaluate the association of self-reported MDD with measures of cognition in three age groups: 21-40 years; 41-60 years; 61+ years. RESULTS MDD (n = 2127) demonstrated poorer objective cognitive performance and greater subjective ratings of cognitive difficulties across all domains assessed compared to non-depressed individuals (ND; n = 21,467). Significant interactions of age group and MDD status with objective and subjective measures of cognition were observed for both middle age and older adults when compared to young adults but few significant differences between middle-aged and older adults were evident. LIMITATIONS This study relied on self-report of MDD diagnosis, utilized remotely administered and unsupervised measures of cognition, and the sample was not diverse. CONCLUSIONS The magnitude of association between MDD and cognitive correlates appears to plateau in middle age. Our results suggest that increased rates of dementia are not due to greater cognitive consequence of MDD in older adults and that age effects, and not greater effects of depression, may lead to increased diagnosis of MDD based on subjective report of cognitive symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and depressive symptoms (DS) frequently co-occur prior to dementia. However, the temporal sequence of their emergence and their combined prognostic value for cognitive decline and dementia is unclear. METHODS Temporal relationships of SCD, DS and memory decline were examined by latent difference score modeling in a high-aged, population-based cohort (N = 3217) and validated using Cox-regression of dementia-conversion. In 334 cognitively unimpaired SCD-patients from memory-clinics, we examined the association of DS with cognitive decline and with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers. RESULTS In the population-based cohort, SCD preceded DS. High DS were associated with increased risk of dementia conversion in individuals with SCD. In SCD-patients from memory-clinics, high DS were associated with greater cognitive decline. CSF Aß42 predicted increasing DS. DISCUSSION SCD typically precedes DS in the evolution to dementia. SCD-patients from memory-clinics with DS may constitute a high-risk group for cognitive decline. HIGHLIGHTS Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) precedes depressive symptoms (DS) as memory declines. Emerging or persistent DS after SCD reports predict dementia. In SCD patients, more amyloid pathology relates to increasing DS. SCD patients with DS are at high risk for symptomatic progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND the course of depression is variable, but it is unknown how this variability over time affects long-term cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE to examine the relationship of different trajectories of depressive symptoms on rates of subsequent cognitive decline in older adults. DESIGN population-based cohort study. SETTING communities in the USA and England. SUBJECTS 17,556 older adults from the Health and Retirement Study and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. METHODS depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and trajectories were calculated using group-based trajectory modelling. Global cognitive function and three cognitive domains of memory, executive function and temporal orientation were assessed for up to 18 years. RESULTS five trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified. Compared with the 'non-depressed' trajectory, the 'worsening depressive symptoms' trajectory (pooled β = -0.016 standard deviation (SD)/year, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.021 to -0.010), 'persistent depressive symptoms' trajectory (pooled β = -0.016 SD/year, 95% CI: -0.024 to -0.008), and 'mild depressive symptoms' trajectory (pooled β = -0.008 SD/year, 95% CI: -0.014 to -0.003) were associated with faster rates of cognitive decline, while no such association was found for the 'improving depressive symptoms' trajectory (pooled β = 0.001 SD/year, 95% CI: -0.010 to 0.012). CONCLUSIONS subthreshold depressive symptoms are associated with an increased rate of cognitive decline, while individuals who show improving depressive symptoms do not exhibit accelerated cognitive decline. These findings raise the possibility that maintaining depressive symptoms as low as possible and ignoring the clinical threshold, might mitigate cognitive decline in older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Determine the association between depression and SCD-related outcomes by age and gender. METHODS Using 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey data, crude and multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the associations between depression and SCD-related outcomes by age and gender. RESULTS Among respondents 45 to 69, depression was associated with SCD [adjusted OR (aOR): 4.36; 95% CI: 3.24-5.86]; needing assistance with activities due to confusion/memory loss (aOR: 2.38; 95% CI: 1.26 - 4.51); needing help with activities and the help is not available (aOR: 4.46; 95% CI: 1.31 - 15.2); and having discussed confusion/memory loss with a health care professional (aOR: 1.87; 95% CI: 1.09 - 3.23). However, among respondents 70 and older, depression was associated with SCD (aOR): 3.52; 95% CI: 2.06-6.02); needing help with activities and the help is not available (aOR: 0.09; 95% CI: 0.01-0.56); confusion/memory loss interfering with work/social activities (aOR: 2.44; 95% CI: 1.03-5.79); and having discussed confusion/memory loss with a health care professional (aOR): 2.99; 95% CI: 1.20-7.40). Depression was positively associated with SCD among men (aOR): 3.68; 95% CI: 2.52-5.38) and women (aOR): 4.76; 95% CI: 3.29-6.87; and was positively associated with all SCD-related outcomes among men except for confusion/memory loss interfering with work/social activities and given up chores. Depression was positively associated with the latter among women (aOR): 2.10; 95% CI: 1.09-4.06). DISCUSSION SCD interventions should include assessment of and intervention for depression, and consider age and gender differences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Associations among psychological health and memory concerns in older adults are well-established, but much of this research is quantitative. OBJECTIVES This study examined how memory problems influence emotional well-being in older adults without dementia, and whether this differs by cognitive status and current depressive or anxiety symptoms. METHODS A qualitative descriptive design was used to examine our research questions. Community-dwelling older adults without dementia (n = 49, Mage = 74.5[10.1], 63% women) completed a cognitive assessment, questionnaires and two semi-structured interviews. Content analysis was used to code and categorise the transcribed interview data, then identify themes within and across participant groups. RESULTS Five themes described the influence of memory problems on emotional well-being: Evoking Emotions, Fearing Future, Undermining Self, Normalising Problems and Adjusting Thinking. Memory problems' impact on emotional well-being varied by current anxiety symptoms, characteristics of the problem and personal experience with dementia. CONCLUSION The emotional impact of memory problems tended to differ by affective symptoms, not cognitive status. Older adults who report memory concerns without objective evidence of impairment may be at risk for negative impacts to mental health and well-being. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Cognitive screening guidelines should consider best practices for responding to memory concerns when cognitive testing results are normal.

Abstract
Objectives Individuals with subjective memory complaints and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety are at high risk for further cognitive decline, and possible progression to dementia. Low-burden interventions to help slow or prevent cognitive decline in this high-risk group are needed. The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of combining Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to increase putative benefits of MBSR for cognitive function and everyday mindfulness in depressed or anxious older adults with subjective cognitive decline. Methods We conducted a two-site pilot double-blind randomized sham-controlled trial, combining active MBSR with either active or sham tDCS. The intervention included weekly in-class group sessions at the local university hospital and daily at-home practice. Anodal tDCS was applied for 30 min during MBSR meditative practice, both in-class and at-home. Results Twenty-six individuals with subjective cognitive complaints and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety were randomized to active (n = 12) or sham tDCS (n = 14). The combination of MBSR and tDCS was safe and well tolerated, though at-home adherence and in-class attendance were variable. While they were not statistically significant, the largest effect sizes for active vs. sham tDCS were for everyday mindfulness (d = 0.6) and social functioning (d = 0.9) (F(1,21) = 3.68, p = 0.07 and F(1,21) = 3.9, p = 0.06, respectively). Conclusions Our findings suggest that it is feasible and safe to combine tDCS with MBSR in older depressed and anxious adults, including during remote, at-home use. Furthermore, tDCS may enhance MBSR via transferring its meditative learning and practice into increases in everyday mindfulness. Future studies need to improve adherence to MBSR with tDCS. Abstract
BACKGROUND Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) may be an early indicator of cognitive impairment, but depressive symptoms can confound this relationship. Associations may be influenced by differences between individuals (i.e., between-persons) or how each individual changes in their experiences over time (i.e., within-persons). OBJECTIVE We examined depressive symptoms as a mediator of the between- and within-person associations of SCD and objective memory in older adults. METHODS Coordinated analyses were conducted across four datasets drawn from large longitudinal studies. Samples (range: n = 1,889 to n = 15,841) included participants 65 years of age or older with no dementia at baseline. We used multilevel structural equation modeling to examine the mediation of SCD and objective memory through depressive symptoms, as well as direct relationships among SCD, objective memory, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS Older adults who were more likely to report SCD had lower objective memory on average (between-person associations), and depressive symptoms partially mediated this relationship in three of four datasets. However, changes in depressive symptoms did not mediate the relationship between reports of SCD and declines in objective memory in three of four datasets (within-person associations). CONCLUSION Individual differences in depressive symptoms, and not changes in an individual's depressive symptoms over time, partially explain the link between SCD and objective memory. Older adults with SCD and depressive symptoms may be at greater risk for poor cognitive outcomes. Future research should explore how perceived changes in memory affect other aspects of psychological well-being, and how these relationships influence cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The current study examined within-person associations of self-reports of impaired current memory functioning and perceived decline with depressive symptoms in older adults without cognitive impairment, and whether these associations were moderated by individuals' levels of neuroticism, conscientiousness, and extraversion. METHODS Samples were drawn from the Einstein Aging Study (EAS), Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP), Minority Aging Research Study (MARS), Health and Retirement Study (HRS), and National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), with over 8,000 participants (65+ years) included across datasets. In a series of coordinated analyses, multilevel linear models tested within-person relationships over periods of up to 22 years. RESULTS Across HRS and NHATS samples, self-reports of impaired current memory functioning covaried with depressive symptoms over time. This association was moderated by neuroticism, such that the association was stronger for individuals with higher levels of neuroticism. Across all samples, perceived memory decline covaried with depressive symptoms over time. This association was moderated by neuroticism in MAP/MARS, HRS, and NHATS, such that the association was stronger for individuals with higher levels of neuroticism. DISCUSSION Self-reports of impaired current memory functioning and perceived memory decline are important determinants of older adults' psychological well-being. In our results, at times when older adults perceive poorer memory functioning or decline, they also tend to report more depressive symptoms. Further, results from two larger datasets suggest that individuals' level of neuroticism may determine the extent to which self-reports of memory impairment and depressive symptoms covary over time.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Current understanding of the psychometric properties of items intended to assess the multidimensional construct of subjective memory (SM) is limited, as longitudinal studies of aging commonly use single items or brief sets of items to assess SM. Investigating how SM items cluster within individuals over time would increase the understanding of how combining these items impacts their utility as an early indicator of cognitive change in the aging trajectory. To address this need, the current study examined the factor structure of a brief set of SM items in an existing longitudinal study focused on cognitive aging at both the within-person and between-person levels. METHODS Data were drawn from the Einstein Aging Study, a longitudinal cohort study of aging (N = 1,239, Mage = 77.51, SD = 5.03; 69.50% white; 24.27% black; 6.23% other). Community-dwelling older adults from an urban area of New York City were interviewed annually. At each wave, participants responded to 6 items intended to assess SM. Items assessed participants' perceived memory decline as well as current memory ability. Multilevel exploratory factor analyses examined which factor solution best fit the data at between-person and within-person levels. RESULTS Factor structure of the SM items varied at the two levels. At the within-person level, two factors emerged, whereas at the between-person level, a single factor best represented the SM items. Items assessing perceived declines in memory functioning tended to have similar trajectories, while items assessing current memory ability were less related to change over time. CONCLUSION Items appeared to assess two different dimensions of SM when examining within-person changes in SM across time; however, the item structure suggested no other items covaried systematically within persons over time. In contrast to the conceptualization of SM as a multidimensional construct, our findings suggest that when measuring SM between individuals, SM items tend to capture a single dimension underlying SM. This may be due to the long retrospection period of items assessing perceived memory ability. A single item assessing perceived memory decline in older adults without evidence of objective cognitive impairment may be sufficient to monitor memory change in clinical or research settings.
